Gum Gully Farm DIY Wedding

I love a bride who isn’t afraid to get her hands a little dirty. A bride who’s no stranger to a glue gun and can DIY with the best of ’em. And this Aussie beauty? Well, she just happens to be all of the above. She set out to craft a handmade affair and Bonavita Photography captured the oh-so-gorgeous results. Hop over here for lots, lots more.

From Bonavita Photography… I wanted to share with you Kate and Stuart’s recent (29.11.13) romantic barn wedding. The wedding took place at a quaint little farm, Gum Gully Farm, nestled in the Dandenong Ranges Vic.

The bride Kate, did all the DIY styling (which was amazing!) herself and made sure every little detail was connected to her and Stuart- from using her late grandfathers suitcase for wishing well, to drawing upon some very talented friends for her stunning flowers and unique rustic wedding cake.

From the Bride… The moment we got engaged we knew we didn’t want your typical traditional wedding with too much structure and too many formalities; instead we wanted a relaxed party atmosphere where guests could enjoy the food, drinks and dance the night away. We were after a celebration that reflected our personalities and represented who we are as a couple.

Our wedding day reflected little personal details that meant so much to us – I wore my late grandma’s pearls and used my late grandpa’s suitcase as our wishing well; my bridesmaid did my hair and one of our good friends was our very talented florist; our sister-in-law made our beautiful rustic wedding cake and I wore a gorgeous ‘something blue’ anklet from my Auntie. I also wore my bridesmaid’s late Grandma’s garter for my ‘something borrowed’ and we had many family get-togethers to make all of our DIY decorations. We even had a ‘dancing shoes’ station, where you could exchange your high heels for thongs to dance the night away! My gorgeous gown was handmade by the lady that made my bridesmaid’s wedding dress – bone coloured Italian silk lay underneath carefully pieced together Italian lace, a sheer lace back with pearl buttons and little sleeves.

Our favours were pins from the Cancer Council Victoria; we don’t know anyone who hasn’t in someway been hurt by cancer so we felt no better way than to give back and donate on behalf of our guests. Acknowledging our parents at the ceremony was very important to us, so we had a dedication to them at the entrance to the chapel, with photos of them on their wedding day’s. One of the songs the band played at our ceremony was Annie’s Song – John Denver, the song my Dad sang to my Mum on the way to their honeymoon!

Stu and I got some alone time whilst taking photos upon acres and acres of sun drenched fields and long grass. The views were the kind that makes you stop in your tracks and take your breath away. It was so important that we had some ‘us’ time so this was the perfect place – we kept saying to each other ‘take it all in’ as we wanted to be 100% present in each moment and truly embrace every second of our special day.

For us our wedding was the perfect reflection of the people we are and the friends and family that are in our lives. When we are reminded by our guests how beautiful and special our wedding was, we get teary seeing their happy smiles as we reflect back on our day. Each detail, no matter how big or small had a personal connection to us and each and every guest helped us to create memories that will last a lifetime.
