I think it’s safe to say that all of you lovelies out in SMP-land run the gamut from traditional to modern to everything in between. But if there is one thing we can all agree on, it’s that weddings at home are completely amazing. Especially when that wedding at home happens to be a gorgeous farm meets beautiful duck pond kind of affair chock-full of DIY goodness and smiling faces as far as the eyes can see. From the Bride… From the day we started planning our special day, I knew I wanted to get married in mum’s garden. My parents’ farm is full of special memories and Pete, my fiance, fell in love with farming and the land. Pam, my clever mum, is a horticulturist and an artist so the garden was already beautiful. I wanted to share Pam’s lovely creation with our guests.
My inspiration came from the farm so I based our theme on rustic country style. We used Dad’s wheat (from our last crop) and added colour with Mums garden flowers. We used old-fashioned fowler jars as vases. It was important for me to use our own produce and create, using our own natural resources, as much as we could.
Tom, my brother, who is a builder even built the bar and some trestles. We hung bunches of wheat along the bar and along the chairs in the ceremony to stick with the theme. Mum created extra wirework (rusty barbed and non-barbed wire), painted some wire balls white and placed quirky designs around the garden. We even hung a wire wreath and created our own photo booth.
Our table names were named after memorable places to Pete and me. We made them from my dad’s shearing stencils and spray paint. I collected wood from around the farm and painted signs and Pete bolted them together. We pegged them into dad’s hay bales. We created a couple of seats with hay bales and covered them with heshian cloth. Ashtrays were created from old dog tins covered with heshian rope. Mum had a collection of gumnuts that we used as decorations on the tablecloths and the boys wore them as lapels. All these small touches added to the natural rustic theme.
Our caterer, and dear friend, Robbie Landale, guided us in the process as she has done many weddings. I knew the food would be great as she always cooks up a storm.
Deniliquin party hire were extremely professional and accommodating and the marquee was gorgeous. They also provided the wine barrels. We left the sides of the marquee up as it was a hot night and we wanted to feel as though we were celebrating in the garden.
Our day was perfect! It was a little frantic before the ceremony, the caterers were in the kitchen, my bridesmaids, the celebrant, my parents, the photographers, my grandma, my sister-in-law and niece and mother-in-law and her daughter were all in the lounge-room! As soon as my dress was on, I was walking down the aisle. The flower girls and page boy ran down the aisle first. My dad was fist pumping down the aisle full of pride and excitement. We were very relaxed in the ceremony and loved every minute. The long preparation for the joyous occasion was all worth it. The rest of the day was full of laughter, dancing, delicious food, great catch ups with all our nearest and dearest!
