Of the million different places perfect for saying “I do,” backyard weddings are (and always will be) one of my favorites. It’s the sense of intimacy and coziness that always seems to burst from a backyard wedding that gets me… the feeling of “hominess” that just can’t be replicated elsewhere. And this darling day styled to absolute perfection by Jessica Coleman is just that. A drop-dead gorgeous affair with sooo much personality and meaning, it makes you smile from ear to ear. From Mark and Kara Photography… If we had to describe Jamal and Aysegul’s wedding with one word it would be ‘energetic.’ Drums and dancing were key elements. The day kicked off with an elegant backyard ceremony styled by the wedding designers. This was a great example of a modern take on a traditional celebration. Jamal treated us like family which really helps when our goal is to immerse ourselves in a couples lives, even if only for one day. We asked them a few questions, this is what the couple had to say…
How and/or where did you meet?
We have always known each other for 20 years, but we had our first special moment at a friends wedding.
Tell us about your proposal.
Jamal proposed over a romantic dinner that he cooked himself (Seafood Marinara Pasta).
How did you find your wedding gown?
I had visioned and knew exactly what I wanted, so I researched and found the perfect boutique that helped me create my vision.
What was the inspiration for your wedding?
It was a combination of everything we loved, from vintage to classic to traditional to cultural to create and customise a unique elegant wedding.
Did you incorporate any DIY/budget elements into your wedding? If so, please provide some details.
For the ceremony family cooked meals, with our own shopping around for special treats that we love.
What was your favourite detail of the day?
The ceremony with the unique touches and the attention to detail, from the alter, to the buffet, to the frame to the flowers, cant really pick it was all perfect.
Are there any other details that help tell the story of your day (special traditions etc.)?
There are so many to go through. From the photos as you will see, that the groom comes to the bride to her house with customs like knocking on door with drummers playing in the background.
The bride’s red ribbon on her waist. You will see that we had an alter and aisle which seems very western but we customised it to our ways of doing the ceremony. Where we sit and who our witnesses were, which our fathers were. To the continuation of drummers through the day and night. No gifts just money and gold.
Is there any advice you would give out to a couple planning their wedding?
Listen to your partner, not everybody else, its about the two of you. It’s once in life time, so don’t hold back and go for whatever you dream or envision.
