From the Bride…Adam and I met while in school; we were together for nine years prior to getting married. We wanted our closet friends and family present on our wedding day. I always envisioned my wedding day to be intimate, surrounded by people I loved, and with a good dance party. Adam and I wanted our wedding day to be fun, unique and memorable. We wanted the day to reflect who we are as individuals and as a couple but we did not want the focus to be on us. We quickly vetoed wedding traditions like big entrances and the bouquet toss.

Adam and I love the big city but are cottagers at heart. The Berkeley Church Field House was perfect, it had everything we were looking for: an outdoor space, a cozy and rustic feel, and yet still in the heart of the city. I remember a dear friend of mine telling me “your wedding day will be the best day of your life” and our venue provided the perfect atmosphere for our perfect day.

Once we had chosen the venue the rest of planning started to fall into place. Picking our wedding party, planner, florist, and photographer was easy. I become obsessed with wedding blogs and magazines. I was never a DIY girl but I turned into a DIY bride quickly. I decided it was the little details that would make the day feel like “us”. Adam is a handy guy and made all the chalkboards. I gathered family and friends together to help with the little details like the bunting flags, tablecloths and favors. We tried our best to support local artists wherever possible. We had Adam’s bow tie, the groomsman’s ties, and the Partridge cake topper all made by local artists.

The difficult part was finding my wedding dress and the bridesmaid dresses. I love fashion; I wanted my dress to reflect my style as well as the venues. Since I’m petite trying on dresses was a challenge as they were very long and big for my stature. When the dress was ready to be picked up I was having an awful day. I tried the dress on and it turned my day around, I was in love with it. I wanted the bridesmaid dresses to be off the rack and reflect the style of each girl. I shopped online for months and came up with nothing. My sister who was the maid of honor was in a store trying on dresses for fun and ended up loving one little black dress which ended up being The dress.

My friend was right, it was the best day of my life. We wrote our own vows, which was important to us and personalized the ceremony in a way that reflected our beliefs and values. With Adam’s handy man skills and my newfound DIY skills the wedding day décor was exactly the way we envisioned it. We had an all night dance party surrounded by our closet family and friends. We will cherish the memories of our wedding day forever; it was everything we envisioned and more.
