From the Bride…Dan and I had a longer engagement by typical standards – nearly 2 years. The weekend we got engaged, we snuck off to Santa Barbara for a night, where we drank champagne and talked for hours about our dream wedding. The highlights that became the blueprints for our day were a killer venue, amazing food and the best party we could throw. It was so important to us to have a spot where we could spend time with our friends and family all weekend, since many were traveling across the country to celebrate with us. We had vacationed at The Ace Hotel & Swim Club just a few months prior, and we recalled it being such an amazing spot – a laid back oasis just two hours from our home in Los Angeles. When we found out it was available, we booked it immediately!
As soon as we had a date, we knew we had to hire Michael Antonia of The Flashdance. We had attended a wedding he DJed at, and we knew we could turn over our wedding into his hands and just enjoy the ride. We were not disappointed! Our guests are still raving about Michael months later. We wanted to keep the vibe of the weekend fun while still being personal. Dan’s dad played guitar for our processional and recessional, and our dear friend got ordained and married us. We nixed flowers as décor and instead decorated with airplants and rosemary (which also grows all over the property at The Ace). We wanted the energy of our event to flow with the location, while also throwing in some sparkle (like our gold chandeliers!)
My mom and I worked on the little details for months prior to the wedding: creating the chalkboards from old frames I picked up at the Rose Bowl Flea Market, creating the photobooth backdrop, potting rosemary, making the boutonnières, baking goodies and putting together welcome bags. We collected wine bottles to use as table numbers and décor. We had buttons made that said “I Love You,” which people wore all night. The morning of the wedding, my friend put together bouquets in the bridal suite while we were all getting ready, from flowers I had picked up from the market that morning. It really was such a team effort!
Looking around the room during dinner was so surreal – to see this event we’d worked so hard to put together happening around us, and seeing all of our favorite people in the world in one place. We felt so lucky! At the end of the night, a big group of us jumped in the pool in our wedding-wear. It was a hilarious and fun way to end such an incredible day. The best advice I have probably sounds like a broken record, but really pick vendors who you love and can trust. We felt so comfortable turning over the day to our amazing vendors, and they all did such an incredible job.
