From the Bride… After five years of dating, Cavin surprised me with a proposal just before crossing the finish line of his first Ironman Triathlon race in Lake Placid, New York. Afterwards, he explained that this was his way to acknowledge all of the hard work and sacrifices both of us made in order for him to make his dream a reality. He shared that it was the love and support we gave each other that got him there.
The same could be said about our wedding day. Of course we wanted it to be a celebration of our love, but it was also a collaboration of so many talents from those closest to us. My dear friend made the bridesmaids jewellery, Cavin’s aunt made the top tier of our cake, a bridesmaid and I spent an afternoon poking pearls and wrapping ribbons around the escort cards to determine meal choice, my brother’s played sweet music during both our ceremony and our first dance, a family friend did wonders with the most perfect flowers found in every nook, and my brother crafted beautiful table numbers from 200 year old barn wood and antique door knobs we collected over the year of planning. Because of everyone’s crafty ways and creative imaginations helping us to pull this off, I know that looking back on this day will be as wonderful as it was to look forward to.
I am an attention to detail kind of girl so I got my hands dirty as well-baking a fan fave cookie recipe and packaging them into lace detailed paper bags for favours with my matron of honour the day before the wedding, making flower vases out of almond butter jars wrapped with pages from a book that had special meaning to us, making paper heart cards for our “wishing well” in place of a guest book, creating name tags for the bridesmaids’ hangers, and other little details that slip my mind at the moment.
Just before the ceremony started, our Officiant suggested the greatest idea-rather than each of us standing on the same side as our family at the front, he suggested that we switch spots. A last minute thought turned into something so special as this gave both of our families full view of our facial expressions and reactions rather than seeing the back of our heads, adding to the intimacy of the whole day. This is proof that sometimes the best things are unplanned.
When we first saw the charming Enoch Turner Schoolhouse for our venue, it had intimate written all over it and we were hooked. One element of fun that stands out: we asked our guests to hula hoop in exchange for a kiss. From young to old, it was a hit and we shared many laughs, and kisses throughout the night. The “Us” came from so many different angles, but a favorite was our centerpiece giveaway game. Cavin and I are both into endurance sports and have many medals from races we’ve done. Each table was given a different medal which was passed around after different prompts from the MC with the last person holding the medal to choose who received the flowers.
Something especially dear to us was the dagger we used to cut the cake. This dagger was received by Cavin’s great grandfather in 1942 in appreciation of Valour for rescuing a group of people from a shipwreck. It has been used to cut the cake at family weddings for three generations so far.
We made it our goal to trust in all the hard work leading up and just enjoy every bit of our day. The tell tale, hard to ignore sign that we accomplished just that? I literally had cramps in my cheeks the next day from all the smiling!
