One of many things I love about New York City are the little hidden gems tucked away from the hustle + bustle. The oasis-like spots that transport you to to a place far away from the Big Apple, while still having the City at your fingertips. These grooms fell in love with the relaxed vibe at Fort Tryon Park and New Leaf Restaurant & Bar and filled the spaces with creative and colorful touches (which they designed themselves) for their big day! From the Grooms… Our original thought was to have our wedding in the Hudson Valley, an area that we absolutely fell in love with after a camping trip with our closest friends a few years back. However, with the logistics of getting both of our out-of-town families upstate, plus the fact that most had never been to NYC to visit us at home, we decided that we would need a compromise. Fortunately, we had stumbled onto Fort Tryon Park at the very northern tip of the city and New Leaf within, both of which we fell in love with as they gave us that deliciously relaxed feeling while still being surrounded by the city.
Being a same sex wedding, we didn’t really know what we had gotten ourselves into, and we didn’t really want to have any sort of a theme going on since most everything we kept coming across seemed to just ooze “here comes the bride.” To keep things working together, we just embraced that our wedding was going to be smack dab in the hottest part of an NYC summer and ran with the best parts of summer. Most everything then branched off our invite I designed to reflect this feeling, with bright neon colors, clusters of wildflowers, a shaved ice stand, vintage candies and arrows for escort cards. Being a graphic designer with a working knowledge of event planning, we saved a ton of money by making most all of the decorations were by hand with some blood, sweat and lots and lots of super glue.
