From the Bride… Ben discovered our venue, Croton-On-Hudson in Upstate New York, on a bike ride months before were even engaged. Once we were engaged, he took me up there to see the place, and I knew straight away it was perfect. We wanted something rustic and outdoors, and the place reminded me a little of England (we are both English). So we got the venue nailed down pretty quickly. Then we had seven months to get the rest together. We did everything ourselves as the venue was literally just that — the venue — whether it was making our own invitations, hand-stamping paper beer cups or designing and printing the menus. I did have a moment about five months before the wedding when we went up the venue and I just thought we had bitten off more than we could chew — it was cold, damp and dirty, and I think my parents thought we were mad! I did all the flowers (even attending a flower arranging class as research) and my own hair and makeup. We just wanted the whole effect to be our ideas and our style. My mum made the bunting and the table runners. We also had to bring in a little of our heritage in the Union Jack napkins and wall hanging. I loved how everything turned out. Getting married in a state park in a full sequin gown and gold stilettos did seem a little crazy, but I really loved the idea of mixing everything together — rustic yet glamorous. Everything fell into place on the day. The food was delicious (they smoked the meat overnight in a 15-foot smoker!), the drinks flowed all night, and the band was amazing. We love how the photos turned out.
