From the Bride… Nick and I both live in downtown Toronto, and when we got engaged, we knew we had to have our wedding in the city — something that reflected us as a modern, urban and fun couple. With a number of guests traveling from abroad, we wanted them to explore nooks and crannies of the city that we often did ourselves. Like many other brides, after getting engaged, I went online to many blogs, including Style Me Pretty, to get inspiration for our wedding. I came across many ideas that I wanted to do myself and to keep with what reflected us as a couple. We wanted chic, simple elements with a modern twist. We chose our summery wedding colors, cobalt blue, lemon yellow and apple green, and incorporated them into as many elements as possible — the bridesmaid dresses and their shoes, my shoes, our invitations, flowers etc.

All the DIY projects were my favorite part of the wedding planning. They included our invitations, programs, menus, table numbers, favor boxes, card box and candy buffet. We made our giant B and N letters out of cardboard boxes — they stood more than six feet tall and were the “wow” factor. Another labor of love was our photo puzzle seating chart with guest names on individual black and white pieces and their table number on the back; a colour version was revealed as these were removed. We couldn’t have done any of these projects without help from our family and friends. Though Nick’s love of baseball wasn’t fully incorporated into our wedding, I picked up some baseball cufflinks from Etsy for his gift, and he got ready with his groomsmen at the Renaissance Hotel with full view of a Canada Day Bluejays game. A hop and a skip away from the Rogers Centre was our venue: Steam Whistle Brewing. This was the perfect canvas for our wedding – the high ceilings and big windows brought amazing natural lighting, it has an urban brick feel, and there is also readily-available beer… Another important part of our wedding was finding an amazing photographer that we “clicked” with. Photography has always been a hobby of mine so my standards were high. When we first met Sandy and we gabbed away for hours just like old friends catching up, we knew she got us as a couple and would capture who we were together – happy and bright. Our caterer and florist also understood our vision and helped bring the entire decor together on our wedding day. I remember when I was in the bridal suite upstairs, it truly was amazing seeing months of planning come to life. Everything was perfect.

One of our favorite pastimes is finding new burger joints, as everyone knows Nick LOVES burgers. Burgers are the one food he’d take with him on a deserted island. I decided to surprise him with a groom’s cake in the shape of a burger, and his expression was priceless – he couldn’t believe it was an actual cake! The best part of my day was when I started walking down the aisle towards Nick. Seeing him, hearing the music and being surrounded by our loved ones who traveled from Toronto, Montreal, Singapore, the US and around the world – I’ll never forget the emotions I felt. It truly was the best day of my life.
