From the Bride… Michael and I immediately agreed that we wanted our wedding to be a fun and laid-back day for our family and friends in our adopted hometown of Toronto. We wanted it to be infused with personal elements and that warm-fuzzy feeling you get with a sense of nostalgia. Our family, friends and amazing vendors truly pulled together to help us craft a day that was all of these things. Our love for Toronto comes from the varied landscape of the city. It’s truly a city of neighborhoods, each with its own personality. When we found our venue, the historic Enoch Turner Schoolhouse in the east-end neighborhood of Corktown, we were instantly sold. The space was understated yet gorgeous that it made it an easy decision to have an indoor wedding in the summer! The rest of our whimsical and nostalgic décor soon followed after. We didn’t have a colour scheme per se, but used simple, crisp navy and white and tied in soft, summery pastels with the florals. My dress had a Swiss dot pattern, which we carried throughout the day. There were navy polka dots on our tissue packets, as well as the cocktail napkins. The boys wore navy ties with white polka dots, and we even managed to find a matching set via Etsy for our nephew, the ring bearer!
Michael and I decided early on that we wanted to letterpress our own invitations. Michael designed the entire suite and ordered the custom plates. Together we spent many hours pressing each invitation individually by hand. Michael carried the same design throughout our day when he created our ceremony programs, the bar menu, seating arrangement and signage. We found an incredible local florist that helped us to envision the perfect bouquets. She didn’t even bat an eye when I told her we were doing our own centerpieces, but instead gave us helpful tips for our project. My mom helped me to collect over 100 vintage-patterned glass vessels of varying sizes and shapes: bud vases, vinegar pitchers and even salt and pepper shakers to use for our centerpieces and décor. I ordered our flowers at a wonderful local flower shop and my mom, bridesmaid Samantha and I put together all of the centerpieces together the Thursday before the wedding. For the table numbers, we tucked a mini-chalkboard into one vase per table — we were in a schoolhouse, after all. To cap it off, we added mercury glass tea lights to give a old-fashioned, sparkly vibe.
I found vintage-inspired frames at a local store and distressed them for our signage and to display our family wedding photos. My mom and I hunted for antique crates for our ceremony décor, which anchored the room and held our ceremony programs and tissue packets (which I hand-made using mini glassine envelopes and a polka dot stamp). I handmade the moss monograms for our décor. A wonderful friend created our adorable custom cake topper, and a family friend baked our delicious wedding cake. On the day of the wedding, I carried a vintage-inspired hankie given to me by my grandmother at my wedding shower. It was such an honor to have my dad drive us around town on the day of the wedding in his 1965 Chevy Acadian. It was the perfect touch for our nostalgic theme. On the way to the ceremony it was a wonderful way to spend some one-on-one time with my dad before I was married.
On the day of the wedding, Michael and I shared a private first look together and had a chance to exchange cards that we had written for one another. We spent the early afternoon with our wedding party roaming around the Corktown and St. Lawrence Market neighborhoods, taking photos and enjoying the time together. Then it was off to the races! Our ceremony, cocktail hour, reception and, of course, the dance party followed soon after. We tied in songs that have played a huge role in our relationship, including many of those songs exchanged so many years ago on postcards overseas. The day flew by, but it radiated more love, support and FUN than I could ever imagine. Michael and I feel so lucky to have such amazing family and friends to embark upon our married lives with!
