The second we caught wind that Myra Callan, the insane talent behind Twigs & Honey, was teaming up with our beloved Elizabeth Messina to produce a book, we knew it was going to be good. The kind of pinch me this can’t be real it’s so gloriously beautiful kind of good. And we were right. It’s a how-to on making twenty pretty accessories for your wedding day or any old day for that matter and we can’t even wait to get our hot little hands on it.
From Myra… I was originally approached by Krause Publications in March of 2011 to write an accessories how-to book and was thrilled about the opportunity. From the beginning, I knew that I had to have my wonderful and talented friend, Elizabeth Messina, photograph the book. To my delight, she and my editor agreed and the process began. The book includes a range of different kinds of accessories and projects that are all very accessible to the average crafter. I wanted to keep the styles consistent with the aesthetic of Twigs & Honey, but also wanted to make sure they were not too difficult to create. It was agreed early on that although Twigs & Honey is mainly known for hair adornments, that the book would showcase multiple accessory styles from necklaces, belts, earrings and more. For the actual projects, the styles were inspired by whimsy, femininity and romance. From soft floral headpieces to delicate wire pearls, I wanted the projects to be both lovely and practical. All the projects in the book are original designs I developed from a mounting range of skills and techniques I’ve learned through the years. The book itself was a huge project in both time and energy but completely worth it. Elizabeth and I coordinated/styled the shoots and almost everything was shot in Portland, OR.
It was a real honor to create this book because I truly love what I do and it’s exciting to share with everyone a little bit of my creativity and expertise through a how-to book. I love the entire design process. From early sketching and conceptualizing to sample creation, watching materials transform and take shape is both rewarding and delightful. Creating pretty things for others is one of my favorite hobbies that has basically become my life and my every day.
