From Angelsmith PhotographyNova and Chris were married on a golden autumn afternoon at Bird in Hand Winery, nestled into the landscape of Woodside, in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia. They created an intimate garden party celebration to reflect their personalities and to celebrate with a beautiful outdoor reception with their closest friends and family. Nova describes their wedding in this way: “We wanted to create a day out of the ordinary, a sparkly garden party, pretty, elegant and romantic, with a touch of carnival!”

The couple first met in high school and became friends. After graduating, their friendship strengthened, even with distance between them, and gradually become love. After a long and lovely history as both friends and partners, they were finally able to celebrate their marriage with their incredibly joyful family and friends. Nova’s family is originally Maori, and so the day incorporated some traditional touches that paid homage to her heritage. A ceremonial cloak was worn for some portraits before the ceremony, and during the ceremony. Nova’s uncle also dedicated a Maori blessing (accompanied by an English translation) at the beginning of the ceremony, which was followed by a traditional Maori song, sung a capella by Nova’s relatives. Nova and Chris are based interstate, so much of their planning evolved online with the guidance and support of Alice Mary Events, a local boutique wedding planner and event stylist. Their wedding had a beautifully bright and colourful, yet simultaneously soft, elegant and homespun artistic feel. Nova styled the wedding herself and sourced all the elements, while Alice coordinated vendors and set up on the day.

The day was full of beautiful creative and stylistic touches, including their cheese tower, which was decorated with figs. Their long reception tables, draped with vintage-influenced striped table runners, were adorned with hundreds of flowers that looked hand-picked from a country field, pieced together by Sam Burnell of Fabulous Functions. Overhead, paper lanterns filled the air, popping little stars of colour throughout the dusky skies. They showcased a table decorated with cute vintage and modern pieces alike, reflecting their honeymoon, along with a “thumb print tree” and some quirky photo props for later in the night. They also made some funky white armchairs available to guests in the courtyard of the winery, complete with more vases of gorgeous flowers. The bridesmaids wore simple coral cocktail-style dresses of contrasting styles, which complemented their bouquets and their soft cream wraps perfectly. Nova’s Collette Dinnigan dress was stunning, and it was finished perfectly with a beautiful mantilla veil.
