Preppy pink fanatics: this Portland Country Club party has your names written all over it. Though they now live in Chicago, this New England native couple married in their hometown where they grew up together and stopped for pictures with emilie inc. at their proposal site. S.Scollay kept the Maine cultural charm coming with fluffy regional hydrangeas. This bride and groom knew how to give their guests a sweet ending: The Gelato Fiasco served up their fave dessert before they departed through a sea of sparklers. From the Bride... My husband and I grew up in Falmouth, Maine, together. We dated in high school, went our separate ways for college, and after seven years of being apart, we got back together while living in Boston. Garrett proposed to me one brisk winter afternoon down at Falmouth's Town Landing.
Although we moved to Chicago soon after Garrett proposed, we both wanted to get married in Maine where we grew up. We wanted our wedding to have a classic New England feel, but we also wanted it to be elegant, yet comfortable, and most importantly, a fun party with our family and friends. There were a few key elements that were important to us: the band, photography, a gelato bar for dessert (our favorite!), no formal sit-down dinner (we had food stations instead), and we wanted to take wedding photos at the town's landing (proposal location) just prior to the reception.
Our ceremony took place at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke in Portland on Sunday of Labor Day weekend 2011, allowing for three days of wonderful celebration. Having both my parents walk me down the aisle and seeing Garrett's face for the first time was a moment I'll never forget. Our reception was held in Falmouth Foreside at the Portland Country Club, right around the corner from where I grew up. We tied in the New England theme in various ways — my husband and the groomsmen wore Vineyard Vines ties, nautical belts, navy blue blazers and khakis. The bridesmaids were in navy, strapless, cocktail length dresses, cinched up in a bright pink satin ribbon. The entire wedding party arrived at the reception by trolley car. We painted the inside of a rowboat navy (DIY project!) to tie in with our colors and had it at the reception filled with raw oysters, shrimp and local Shipyard beer. Nautical signal flags that spelled out “Brett loves Garrett” hung at the entrance of the Portland Country Club. My bridesmaids wore freshwater pearl earrings made by a jeweler in Maine, and our cake was made by a family friend with photograph bunting (mimicking the nautical flags). All of our vendors were amazing and exceeded our expectations! Our wedding day was absolutely perfect — we were overwhelmed with joy the entire day. The evening concluded with Garrett and me exiting under an arbor of three-foot sparklers held by our guests. Being surrounded by family and friends to celebrate with us was truly a dream come true.
