From the Groom… Meghan and I approached the wedding process with a very balanced strategy: she would plan, I would not. This was not due to any lack of effort on my part, but primarily because of Meghan’s incredibly organized personality and my general ineptitude. This game plan left me with a few responsibilities that I felt strongly about — primarily the photographer and the food — both of which we could not be happier about. But I digress, and will get back to that later. The biggest hurdle in our planning was finding a venue. We spent several weekends looking at an obscene number of locations, and coincidentally, in the end returned to the very first place we looked at: Bridgewaters in the South Street Seaport. We both knew what we wanted in a venue: a view, outdoor space, good food and an open feel. Bridgewaters definitely had all of these – an outdoor patio, a view of the Brooklyn Bridge, a main room with a high ceiling and delicious food. Being from San Francisco, most of my family/guests were coming from the west coast, and even some from Korea – so I really wanted to make sure that they were able to get the quintessential New York experience. I also want to note that we got married on Friday, October 28th. There were torrential downpours the night of Thursday, October 27th AND it snowed on Saturday, October 29th, but we could not have been luckier, as it was crystal clear that Friday, and we took full advantage of the fortuitous weather and were able to spend some time on the outdoor patio. The highlight of my day, besides the whole getting married thing, was when Meghan and I entered the cocktail hour prior to most of the guests, and she surprised me with our cake topper that looked like us standing in San Francisco with a miniature golden gate bridge in the background (with cable cars, etc.), and me in my beloved San Francisco Giants hat. It truly was one of the defining moments of that day for me.
The reception itself was perfect. My biggest fear was that Meghan wouldn’t be able to enjoy her own wedding. The support staff at Bridgewaters made sure that everything ran smoothly. Our day-of planner Tzo Ai was a godsend. She was on top of every detail the entire day, and I truly think that if it weren’t for her, things would have been much more stressful for both Meghan and me. The last two major highlights of the night for Meghan and I were our band, the Touch, and our photographer, Julia Newman. The Touch sounded unbelievable, and I cannot tell you how much people raved about them. And going back to my other major responsibility, our photographer, Julia Newman, was amazing. Julia was so good at making sure that we got all of our family pictures efficiently and that we were able to get a multitude of different shots, whether with the bridal party or just Meghan and me. In addition, not only was she great on the day of, she is also great in making sure that any follow up is attended to in a timely fashion — we have already received our print book and will be receiving our album shortly. One thing that I really wanted to mention was our photo booth. This was one thing that Meghan and I had gone back and forth on, as it does cost a little extra, but looking back, we could not have been happier with our decision to have a photo booth. It was worth every penny, and our only regret is not spending more time “in” it.
Overall, I know that these aren’t typically written from the groom’s perspective, so I apologize for my general sarcasm and cynicism, but I do hope that it is abundantly clear that Meghan and I truly had one of the best days of our lives and would not change a single thing.
