This Byron Bay wedding is so polished and pretty it’s hard to believe that it was mostly a DIY affair (with a little help from some super talented vendors)! From the lace-wrapped mason jars to the beautiful branch ceremony arch, all the sweet little details were created with lots of love by the bride, groom and their families. From the bride… Once Mitch and I arrived home from our Euro-Engage-o trip, we had a six weeks to find a venue before I went back overseas to hang with the monkeys! So we made several appointments to view some restaurants around the Brisbane area. Nothing really seemed to feel right, and after pouring over many wedding blogs and wedding websites, I was coming to realise the best weddings seemed to be the ones that were built from the ground up! We decided that we definitely wanted to have a wedding on a property in the country, which is where we both grew up, and pretty much just keep it real (yo). We ended up finding an incredible property just outside of Byron Bay: Byron View Farm. Almost like the first time you meet “the one”, or the first time you try on “the dress,” we both had that feeling when driving up to this incredible property on the top of the hill with the most gorgeous little cottage and manicured gardens, it was “the venue.” From there, everything started coming together.
I would say my wedding style inspiration was best summed up by my top Google search: “barn wedding.” Unfortunately there’s not much in the way of barn venues in my area, so I had my marquee and barnsified it up as much as I could. The main themes throughout the wedding were hessian, twine, wood, orange/yellow/pink flowers in jars and willow. I was very fortunate to have an amazing and clever step-father who built me a gorgeous wooden wedding arbour, and then the incredible “flower fairy” Estelle from The French Petal jazzed that arbour up with willow like no one’s business! We had another willow feature that was meant to be hung outside, however it was a very windy (cyclonic) day so we ended up having it inside the marquee. My step-father also built about 90 tea light candle holders made from fallen wood he had collected from my grandparent’s property. I mentioned to him in passing one day that I thought it was cute how a few of the branches had moss growing off them … I guess he liked the look too, because when I came to see the final product, he’d managed to procure himself a bucket load of moss and had very meticulously hot glue gunned little pieces of moss to each candle holder. BLESS!
Another of our little (major) DIY projects was the jars. We had family collecting jars and also people on the look-out at shops. I had always known that I wanted my flowers to be in jars, perhaps with a little bow or some twine around them, but one day I went to some markets and my super trendy photographers just happened to have a stall set up with a photobooth, and at the info table they had these gorgeous flowers in jars. Tenielle had a strip of hessian, with a ribbon of lace on top, then a colourful ribbon tied in a bow on top of that. I was in love. I couldn’t imagine not having these incredibly cute little jars scattered throughout the marquee, so my mum and I got to it! Many hours of label removing, hessian cutting, hot glue gunning, bow tying ensued, and 200 jars later, we were done! The jars were down our aisle, on our signing table, scattered throughout the marquee, on the bar and on the cake table, hanging from the willow feature, and I may have even spied some in our portaloos. And of course, they were filled with flowers supplied by Estelle.
