From the Bride… Paul and I have been together for over 10 years, sharing a love for music, art, culture, dancing and the relaxed, casual lifestyle unburdened by expectation or tradition. Always looking for the greener grass, we have found it by the beach on the Sunshine Coast, Australia. That was just over 3 years ago. Early in 2011 when attending a vintage fair not far from home, we stumbled across the beautiful historic Yandina Station farmstead. It is over 100 years old and located between Mount Ninderry and Mount Coolum on the Sunshine Coast. We immediately fell in love with the setting, the history and the huge Moreton Bay Fig Tree growing in the gardens. We instantly knew it was the perfect place to have our wedding day.
Using the beautiful rustic setting of Yandina Station as a foundation for our design, we created a number of handmade items such as linen placemats, bunting, vintage styled children’s pin-wheels and ribbon wands. Individual items such as the guest’s placemats were ink stamped with tree symbols to represent the significance of the Moreton Bay Fig Tree. Dressing the ceremony space and the garden party was easy as we could structure the decoration around the strong, genuine character of the historic farmstead. The vintage styled handmade decorations allowed us to subtly impose a little of our personalities.
All of the designs, styling and production were made by us and mostly by hand. The invitations were produced using a 1960s Olivetti Dora typewriter; the bunting was sewn using recycled materials; and the children’s wedding bags were fashioned from linen, with a hand stitched cotton symbol to denote boys (camera) and girls (sparrow), each bag was stuffed with vintage toys, gifts and lollies. The main garden party space was simply decorated with scatterings of books, wild flowers; Paul’s collection of vintage cameras; a large rusting milk urn for the wishing well; a bowling suitcase contained the wedding gifts (jars containing locally hand-made lollies inscribed with a heart and Paul & Adele); we left out a Polaroid camera to allow guests to capture their own moment; individual wild flowers in small milk bottles were hung around the space; and a hand painted, weathered wooden sign was erected to direct party goers to the farmstead.
