This next little number by Alison Conklin has that old school style that makes my weddings senses perk right up. For one, any groom that can rock a hat and suspenders is OK in my book – not to mention his bride has that timeless beauty you just can’t replicate. From the Bride…Where to begin?! It surely was a “labor of love.” My first inspirations were my favorite color yellow, milk glass, my lace gown, and burlap. It started out as being a pretty uniform idea — everything yellow, and I wanted all of my milk glass to be the Fenton hobnail. However, it proved difficult to only find Fenton hobnail milk glass, and I decided that with the theme my husband and I were going for, a mismatch would probably be awesome! Then other colors started working their way into the decor. Finally, we had a bunch of eclectic milk glass and themes of yellow, navy, and pale pink.
I made the burlap runners myself. I’m not very handy with a needle and thread, but super crafty with a hot-glue gun! I hot glued all of the lace trim to the burlap, and I couldn’t have imagined them turning out better! I purchased all of the little chalk boards for the table numbers last minute for a dollar a piece at A.C. Moore, painted them white the night before the wedding, hot-glued a piece of tied burlap to the corners, and chalked on the numbers. The seating chart was put together by printing out the guests’ names on the computer, cutting them out, hot-gluing them onto a piece of scrapbook paper, and pinning them with mini clothes pins I purchased at Cold Spring Village in Cape May, NJ to a piece of twine. The table dedicated to wedding pictures of our parents and grandparents was my mother’s idea. I purchased the spectacular frames from my favorite craft store, Hobby Lobby. Our cake cabinet was an old cabinet we purchased from an Antique Store a long time ago as a decorative piece for our home, and I just loved the idea of using it for our wedding cake. Our “cake toppers” were the extremely old and worn Mickey and Minnie Mouse figurines we purchased from another Antique Store; unfortunately they were too heavy for the cake as they were made from lead. The cake sat on a wooden pedestal purchased at Pottery Barn.
We had a special old farm chair sitting at the reception to mark the absence of my husband’s mother, Judy. She passed away from cancer in February of 2006. We laid her favorite flowers, sunflowers, on the chair, along with a poem Jimmy wrote in her remembrance. Next to the chair was a real Christmas tree cut down the day before the wedding, strung with lights, and covered in wooden carved and painted sunflower Christmas ornaments, made by a very talented Rick Wright, a country furniture crafter. These were one of our favors to our guests, and they also served as another piece commemorating Jimmy’s mom. Around my bouquet I wrapped my dear grandfather’s dog tags in his remembrance, who passed away in July 2006. Lastly, on our sweetheart table, we placed a picture of our dear puppy, Bailey, a 13 year old golden retriever who is the center of our universe. As soon as the reception was over, Bailey joined us in our room at The pet-friendly Glasbern and slept with us as our first “official” night as a family. Everything was more beautiful than I could have ever imagined, and wish I could relive the wedding each and every day of my life!
