From the Bride…The day of Jason and I’s wedding I woke up to brilliant sunshine.  I’d been mentally preparing myself for the “what if”, as we live in Canada after all, but on July 24th 2010 the sun shone brightly and I knew we were about to have our perfect day.

Our vision began the day we got engaged.  My family has a rustic summer cabin on an island on the Sunshine Coast of BC and my best childhood memories are of lazy summer days there. It’s a place where time slows and shoes go missing for the summer.  When Jason took me to the island in the dead of winter, cabins all boarded up, to propose, we knew we had to get married nearby. The island has no electricity and is boat access only.  After considering all the logistics of guest transport, the chance of rain, and power needs for a wedding on the island we decided to hold the wedding at the nearby Rockwater Secret Cove Resort.  The resort, a place my grandparents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary years ago, boasts luxury tenthouse suites in character with the rugged westcoast shores and had the perfect perch for our ceremony, which looked out at the island.

We planned a wedding weekend on the Sunshine Coast.  The evening before the wedding we held a rehearsal dinner for 30 guests at the family cabin and then boated over to the resort together as the sun went down to rest up in causal luxury. With an intimate guest list of 70, we wanted our wedding to evoke the feeling of a sunny summer evening on the beach with friends and family.  Inspired by a yellow and white striped beach towel, we began crafting our wedding with personal details.  We choose a yellow, coral, and sand colour scheme to create the feeling of a summer sunset at the bay. Many details of the wedding were handmade with love including the 70 jars of strawberry jam which Jason and I made in my moms kitchen as gifts for each of our guests.  Fresh squeezed lemonade was served to guest’s as they arrived at the ceremony to offer relief from the summer heat and a perfect summer breeze blew the yellow ribbons tide to the back row of the ceremony chairs. Immediately following the ceremony a champagne toast kicked off the cocktail hour fun. Guest’s played bocce ball and had their photo’s taken in our version of smile booth –  for which the backdrop was an arbutus tree adorned with ribbon and fun props. In the background we heard the sweet sound of the waves crashing against the shore and  a local guitarist playing our favorite summer tunes. Lanterns strung with natural twine from the center of the dining tent, creating a golden light into the evening.  For dessert buttercream frosted cakes and homemade strawberry rhubarb pie were served.

Following dinner guests moved to the upper deck strung with lights to enjoy a champagne cocktail while watching our first dance.  Then the party really started when Van Morrison’s “wild night” was played for the father daughter dance and every guest join in on the dance floor. To ensure no guest went to bed hungry the late night snack was Jason’s Moms homemade cookies served in large cookie jars.
