From the Bride…Matt and I had an engagement of four short months. Not much time to plan a wedding, but I cheated a little. We talked about getting married a few months before he popped the question, which allowed me to get a head start on all of the planning. I spent hours and hours online looking at weddings into the wee hours of the night. Sure, I may not have gotten as much homework, or sleep for that matter, accomplished, but I decided on a style [Vintage] and theme [Love Birds] pretty early on. My budget [$10,000] forced me to get creative and I took on multiple DIY projects that made my wedding planning experience the joyous ride that it was.
I found most of my inspiration on various blogs dedicated to creative DIY projects. The most time consuming project was the making of the wedding favors, but I loved the way they captured the theme I was going for. Inside the bags, we put a packet of wildflower seeds with a note telling our guests thank you for all they had done, as well as to plant these seeds in honor of our love. I wanted to give our guests something meaningful, something to remind them of our special day. One of my favorite projects I took on was collecting china, vintage handkerchiefs, vases, and doilies from thrift stores and flea markets. Yes, it was very time consuming, but it gave my reception the vintage backyard-wedding feel I wanted. Now that I am left an abundance of collected goodies, I am going to rent them out to other brides looking for the same thing. The second project I enjoyed most was putting together the “Love Lasts” booth. The idea behind this was to have pictures of family members who stuck together through all the difficult times in marriage.
My advice for brides-to-be? Have fun! Fully enjoy this time in your life because it goes by so quickly. Don’t hesitate to ask your bridesmaids and other girlfriends to help you with projects because it can get overwhelming very quickly. I hosted two craft parties where my girlfriends helped out sewing, cutting, and gluing into the wee hours of the night. We worked on favors, pinwheels for the tables, and props for the photo booth and they were happy to help! I, of course, offered scrumptious dessert and wine to help keep them motivated.
