Confession: I have a thing for sweaters. I just might own one in every color and would wear them every single day if I could. So when I spied with my little eyes all those pretty bridesmaids lined up in a row and sporting a magnificent array of colorful knitwear; it completely made my year. Jason + Anna Photography captured the magic swirling around this Holman Ranch beauty and Engaged & Inspired (the Bride!) crafted one heck of a colorful affair. From Engaged & Inspired (The Bride)… Being two very crafty and creative people, we knew we wanted our wedding to look as personal as our relationship has been for the past 5 years. We wanted something classic instead of trendy and something that felt magical during every moment. After what felt like an endless process finding a venue, we finally came across Holman Ranch and at that moment everything seemed to fall right into place. This was more than we wanted to spend on the venue, but after seeing what was out there, it was worth it to cut down in other areas in order to have the perfect backdrop.
This was most definitely a DIY and budget wedding in every aspect. I didn’t have a wedding budget like a lot of other brides out there so I had to be very budget conscious and decide what was worth splurging on and what was worth skipping all together. My one splurge was my Melissa Sweet gown. But to make up for that we did things like offer a buffet meal instead of a sit down dinner (Way cheaper!) and cut out things like transportation. Overall I was able to get everything we wanted and we are so glad we decided to skimp on areas that didn’t seem to make a difference to us in the end.
Since becoming engaged I have been able to share this journey with lots of other brides on my wedding blog Engaged & Inspired. I loved having a place to download ideas, inspirations and talk to other brides which made the planning process a whole lot easier and a whole lot more fun. Connecting with other people who are going through the same thing was invaluable to me during the planning process.
There are many aspects about this wedding that are different. All the paper products were created by my web designer husband, whereas I decided to tackle a heavy list of crafting projects. We decided on book page table runners. For over 3 months I was coffee-staining book pages I found at garage sales and baking them in the oven. Everything from the ceremony sign, s’more table, gift table, and the tablescape itself had my hands all over it. I went from antique store to antique store collecting all sorts of bottles, teacups, and small details to add to the wedding.
The escort card armoire was a labor of love from my father. Wanting to help, he decided to tackle this project for me. He added the hangers, the chicken wire and even clipped each escort card to the doors for the big day. This was such a good project for him to feel involved and we now have the armoire in our home awaiting it’s next use as the armoire for our future child’s room.
Lastly, but not least, is my husband. One thing I will continually call him out on is his proposal story. He was flustered and lost his words when asking me to propose a year and a half ago. I see these video proposals and always tell him about them. For his speech during the reception he surprised me by getting down on one knee in front of the entire crowd with these words from When Harry Met Sally (my favorite movie) “When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with someone, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible. Will you spend the rest of your life with me?” I died. I really did. Best proposal story ever.
Overall our day was absolutely gorgeous and amazing. What started as a rainy day turned into the perfect setting for our wedding day. All of our vendors exceeded every expectation I had and created a better wedding day than I ever could have imagined.
