Classic Wedding Showcasing DC’s Finest Spots

Set in Washington DC, this classic winter wedding moved through some of the best spots in the city – getting ready at The Willard Intercontinental Hotel, taking bridal party portraits at Union Station, and saying “I do” at the beautiful and historic Meridian House. Audra Wrisley Photography captured the day, and you can see more of this elegant DC beauty in the Vault.

From Audra Wrisley PhotographyLauren and Matt’s Meridian House winter wedding was held on a perfectly crisp January day with soft light and warm joy that spread from beginning to end. From the stunning ivory and taupe stationery suite to the ivory and green florals, the elegant tone was set for their guests who traveled from near and far to spend the day celebrating this sweet couple.

On their wedding day, set in the heart of Washington DC, we were able to capture snippets from all around the city, beginning with the getting ready excitement at the Willard Hotel, then onto Union Station for portraits, and later with the wedding festivities at the incredible Meridian House. As a former ambassador’s home constructed in the 1920s, each room of the Meridian House is full of character and history, from the intricate french paintings to the antique oriental porcelain adorning the spaces. Dinner was held in the library room and dining rooms, where heartfelt toasts preceded an amazing first dance in the ballroom.

A Foggy Morning in the City Engagement Session

If you think sunny skies and open fields are the only way to do an engagement, allow me to introduce Alicia Swedenborg who photographed this foggy city session that’ll make you fully reconsider. The tall white pillars paired with the bride’s sleek jumpsuit made for a crazy stylish look, and the love between these two radiates from every image. See more of this couple in their beloved city right this way.

From the bride… Though we attended the same college, we didn’t meet until after we graduated and were introduced by mutual friends at a dinner in Georgetown for a friend who was visiting.

Patrick proposed at Weir Pond on Weir Farm Historic Site in Ridgefield, Connecticut, Kelly’s hometown. The park is adjacent to Kelly’s parent’s house and is somewhere she spent a lot of time as she was growing up.

We wanted to do the engagement session in DC since it is where we met and where we live. It was one of the foggiest mornings I can remember in DC, but the fog combined with the monuments and the cherry blossoms (plus Alicia’s extraordinary talent!) made for magical photos.

As if You Needed One More Reason to Fall in Love with Cherry Blossoms

There is a reason Spring is such a popular season for weddings… the blooms! And cherry blossoms are at the top of that Love of All Things Florals list. See how this team of creatives were inspired by that pretty blushing branch with a stunning flower filled shoot including design by Type A Society, florals by Wild Green Yonder, and imagery by Angela Newton Roy. Plus, find even more of that crazy gorgeous dress right here!

This beautiful springtime editorial was inspired by the entrance of spring in the Washington DC area marked by the epic Japanese-gifted Cherry Blossoms to our city. We wanted to give our spring brides inspiration to work into their bridal portraits, invitations, tablescape, and hair + makeup. We have all seen the traditional engagement cherry blossom session, but we wanted to show brides how to do something a little different and get creative with the blossoms by bringing them indoors and utilizing them in the tablescape, styling, and even having them mirrored in the gorgeous Gossamer dress we used on our model. Springtime blooms and branches are a such a unique way to bring floral into your wedding table. Building the arrangement directly on the table giving the illusion of branches organically growing up from the center made the arrangement feel like it was part of the table. I think my favorite part about styling this editorial was the Gossamer dress that literally looked like it was pulled from a cherry blossom tree. The floral applique details were perfection mixed with our beautiful model’s perfect skin tone- made for some stunning portraits.

It’s All Rosé and Smiles in This Adorable DC Engagement

Much like the sweet couple, we cannot stop smiling while looking at this gallery by Elizabeth Fogarty Photography! To say Kari Rider Events created an idyllic setting for this engagement session is an understatement – just take one look at the bride-to-be’s loose waves and flowing skirt, the romantic bouquet, and the stately beauty of the DC War Memorial location. Scroll on to see it all!

From Kari Rider EventsDC residents Kathleen and Matt wanted their engagement photos to be as timeless and romantic as their planned wedding day. We kept the vibe super classic for their portraits at the DC War Memorial, a scaled down version of the Jefferson Memorial without the crowds! We let the setting take center stage, bringing in a few subtle accents like a simply styled Save the Date, a gorgeous bouquet that fit perfectly with the blush, gray, and dusty blue color palette, and, of course, a little bubbly! Everything flowed as beautifully as Kathleen’s drapey Morning Lavender skirt, and the photos by Elizabeth Fogarty were nothing short of dreamy!

Winter Wedding Dubbed by the Couple as a ‘Champagne-Soaked Dance Party’

I think it should be a new thing that we ask all couples how to describe their wedding day in five words or less. Because this stunning duo, came up with THE best one: ‘Champagne-Soaked Dance Party’. Now, doesn’t that sound like a wedding you want to attend? SoCo Events added their pretty touch and it’s classic elegance at it’s best. Join me in The Vault for more captured by Bonnie Sen.

From the newlyweds… How We Met: This question has a few answers. According to Facebook, we cross paths at some point while we were both at Vanderbilt in 2009. Technically, we were first introduced, as grown ups, at Hill Country BBQ as we were both helping out with a young Vandy alumni fundraising event. It was an informal host committee meeting and Matt was the only person at the table that I did not know. I thought he was cute and he apparently thought I “looked SO Vanderbilt.” However, we did not speak much at the dinner, besides a few stolen glances and watching Matt spill BBQ sauce all over his suit. After that encounter, a mutual friend and I were gchatting as I was complaining about the lack of nice men in DC. This friend, Theo, suggested that he could set me up with his old Vandy buddy Matt McGrath the next time he was in DC and we’d be a good match. About two weeks later, I unexpectedly bumped into Matt at a friend of a friend’s house party in Adams Morgan. After asking him to pour a drink, for reasons unknown to me, the next words that blurted out of my mouth were “Theo says we should date” Matt took it in stride with some mild amusement.

What was the bride’s first impression? My first impression of Matt was that he was very cute and how did I never lay eyes on him while I was at Vanderbilt. He was charming, polite, and well dressed, albeit a messy eater.

What was the groom’s first impression? I have always found Sarah captivating because she’s this tall, beautiful woman who is charming, assertive and unafraid all at the same time. About two minutes into our first conversation, Sarah told me that we shared a close mutual friend in New York, who had told her that she and I should date.  I took a sip of my drink and responded, “Well, I think we should try that.”

I also love to read, and Sarah said she did too, so I gave her a little test.  After our first date I offered her a couple books on politics that I thought she’d like.  (Sarah still makes fun of me for giving her “homework.”)  But she thanked me for the recommendations and finished both books by our third date.

Our First Date: Our first real “date” was on a Wednesday night at Brasserie Beck on March 14, 2012. After hitting it off majorly on Saturday night, I was expecting Matt to immediately call/text/date me. By Tuesday morning and radio silence I was a bit panicked. But, rather than a rash of somewhat inconsequential texts or emails that I had come to expect in the DC dating pool, Matt actually CALLED me on Tuesday afternoon and asked me to meet him on Wednesday night. He suggested Brasserie Beck, which was about 5 minutes from my then apartment. He asked if I could do 8 PM. At the time, I was a teacher with the Teach For America program and started my days at 5:45 AM, meaning dinner time for me was the early bird special at 5:30 pm, so I assumed he meant for a drink. I admittedly tried to arrive late, against my natural inclination, and actually stood around the corner and waited for him to walk in first. When we were seated for actual dinner, I was surprised – he was so grown up was my initial reaction, an actual meal! I also had sort of already eaten dinner. He was very sweet and charming and tried to impress me with his French and his reasoning for choosing a Belgian restaurant (he interned at the EU in Brussels during college). We ended up talking until around midnight – way past my bedtime.

How long did you date before getting engaged: We dated from March 2012 to January 2015

Where and How We Got Engaged: (Matt and I had discussed getting engaged a bit and I already knew that over Christmas he was planning to ask my dad permission (over a scotch at 10 AM during my nephew’s breakfast with Santa, it turns out). In his very Matt way, he had told me to plan for “Q3 2015” – obviously trying to make light of the situation while reassuring me.
During 2013 and 2014, I was traveling quite a bit for work and had racked up a number of frequent flier miles. We were originally planning to take a trip to Argentina, but the flights and times didn’t seem to work out. Instead, we decided to go to Northern India. We arrived in Delhi in January 2015; I had gotten my nails done just in case he was going to pop the question. However, after our first night and nada, I sort of assumed that he wouldn’t want to carry a diamond all over India in the next 10 days, so assumed it wasn’t happening. During our amazing trip we kept get upgraded to nicer rooms or suites and the staff kept congratulating us and calling me Mrs. McGrath. Every time, Matt sort of nervously laughed – I assumed since he was getting awkward at the insinuation.

Our final night in India, we were in Jaipur – the Gem City in Rajasthan. Matt arranged for us to have dinner at the Rambagh Palace, once the residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur, which was converted to a hotel when the royal family moved out in the late 1950s. Before we left for dinner, he had arranged for a nail appointment for me in the hotel. I wasn’t sure if it was a sign or if he was just thinking my curry stained polish was looking a little rough. Once we left for dinner, Matt started to sweat profusely. Arriving at the hotel, the GM met us at the door and gave us a tour of the palace. Again, the royal treatment seemed a bit odd. Finally we concluded at a giant fountain in the back of the palace that was spraying water way into the air and beautifully lit up. Matt got down on one knee and asked if I would marry him. Earlier in the day, he had bought a little emerald bracelet to propose with and had the real ring waiting for me in DC. We then had the most amazing 6 course menu on gold plates, followed by a huge chocolate cake on a bed of roses. Truly magical!

How long were you engaged before getting married: We were engaged exactly 1 year and 7 days. We initially thought about the weekend prior, so we would have an exactly one year engagement, but thank GOD we did not as that turned out to be the weekend of the snowpocalypse and were totally snowed in. I really wanted a winter wedding and Matt did not want a long engagement. He asked if we could go to the court house multiple times to just make it official already.

Bride’s Favorite Wedding Detail: I have too many to count, but I think my favorite detail was the custom made soft seating from Edge Floral. It was a beautiful mirrored gold chair, couch and table, covered in a rich velvet. It was so beautiful and made the space cozy and comfortable and kept everyone in the room.

I also LOVED the welcome bag details – the theme of DC came across with all of the customized stickers and the water bottle wraps, not to mention the capital shaped cookies and campaign pins! The velvet bags that held the hangover kits were also so fun and luxe.

Groom’s Favorite Wedding Detail: I was totally blown away by the attention to detail that Soco Events and the Four Seasons put into the wedding reception.  We really wanted a reception where all our family and friends would dance, so I appreciated the cocktail napkins that helped people build their confidence.  I think one said, “Trust me, you can dance. -Vodka”.  Note from Sarah – Matt picked out great crushed velvet tuxedo slippers for himself and all the groomsmen

Biggest Surprise of Wedding: (from Matt) When Sarah and I started our first dance, I was totally confused when at first I couldn’t recognize what the band was playing.  Little did I know, Sarah had asked them to play an acoustic version of “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen, which was the first song we danced to when we started dating in 2012.  We still laugh about “Call Me Maybe” being our first dance — maybe one day it will be a classic!

From Sarah: I loved surprising Matt with our first dance song. Call Me Maybe always makes me think of our first few months of dating, when we would listen and dance to it nonstop.  But my favorite surprise of the wedding was my parent’s participating in the Horah! It was SO funny to watch my very catholic mom get hoisted up in a chair – something she vowed she would never do (“too dangerous”). As they lifted her into the air she made the sign of the cross – which just made the whole thing funnier.

Most Sentimental/Touching Moment of the Wedding: (from Matt) Sarah was raised Catholic and I was raised Jewish, so we wanted a wedding service that would reflect who we are together and be inclusive of our families.  I spent a lot of time writing our own wedding service with my cousins Monsignor Robert Harris of Brooklyn, New York and Rabbi Dan Levin of Boca Raton, Florida.  We absolutely loved the sermons they gave, where Monsignor Bob talked about the theme of “harmony” from the Old Testament and Rabbi Dan talked about the theme of “love” from the New Testament.  We felt a lot of love in the chapel and it really set the tone for the rest of the evening.

From Sarah: My dad is a big dude. Very manly and tough, but when he came into the room to see me in my dress for the first time he was basically a crying ball of mush. It was so sweet and touching to see how much he cares and loves my family in a moment like that.

Wedding Favors or any special décor details: I LOVED the customized wedding campaign pins that Blair designed. During the wedding, I was working on the Jeb 2016 campaign and had worked in republican fundraising for the past 3 years, while Matt is an Obama White House alumnae and works with Sec. Madeline Albright. Since our wedding was the day before the Iowa primaries and everyone who knows us, knows our political involvement, it was a really fun way to incorporate the election year, DC and politics in a fun and playful (read no political arguing!) way.

First Dance Song: Call Me Maybe – acoustic. A fun surprise to Matt. By the end, all of our guests were clapping and singing along.

Wedding Theme: My vision for the theme, was a black tie evening, that was still a cozy escape from the winter, like a warm fire and hot drink. I wanted it to feel a little old school in that way.

Perfectly On Point Early Spring Wedding

When you know, you know. I’m talking about wedding dresses dear friends but let’s be honest, the search for that gorgeous gown can seem almost as intense as the hunt for your future hubby. So when this Bride tried on her Oscar de la Renta dress she just knew it was the one and the rest of her wedding planning was able to come together – thanks in part to the talented Holly Heider Chapple Flowers. Audra Wrisley captured the dress, the florals and more – see them all in our Vault right this way!

From Audra WrisleyKristin and Dave were married on a beautiful early spring day in Washington, DC. They’d envisioned a classic, city chic wedding centered on celebrating with family and friends. Designed around Kristin’s breathtaking Oscar de la Renta gown, they chose a palette of classic ivory, blush, champagne with black accents to create a dreamy affair that was a joy to photograph. Beginning the day at the bridal suite at the Willard Intercontinental, we photographed all of Kristin’s exquisite details and a few bridal party portraits prior to the ceremony. After Kristin and Dave said their vows under the gorgeous Italian Fresco at Holy Rosary Church in DC, we headed to the Congressional Country Club for the reception. Dancing the night away with an incredible band, Kristin and Dave ended the evening with a fun bubble exit to conclude the beautiful wedding day.

From the Bride… Dave and I met through really good mutual friends of ours, Lauren and Justin. They were apart of our bridal party and we are getting ready to celebrate them, as they are engaged!

We were very fortunate to be able to have a big wedding with lots of support from our parents. It was truly important to us that our wedding day was all about being with our family and friends; and we wanted to make it a fun and memorable day for everyone! Father Ezio at Holy Rosary made our ceremony so special and helped us start off the day by celebrating our faith. The Congressional Country Club provided delicious food and a beautiful venue while the Winn Brothers Band was absolutely outstanding and helped us party till midnight!

My Mom and I planned a day to wedding dress shop and visited Jennifer at Saks Jandel in Chevy Chase first. The Oscar de la Renta dress was the second dress I put on. The way I felt in that dress and the luxurious fabric was what truly blew me away. We did end up visiting other shops but I compared all dresses to that one. My Mom knew it was THE DRESS before I did! I always thought I would never get a strapless wedding dress but she had the idea of creating a lace top which turned out so lovely. And gave me two different looks for the big day!!

I owe a lot of thanks to my Mom. She was my personal wedding planner and rock throughout the whole wedding process. We went on all of the appointments together with my Dad and Dave participating in some as well. She helped me design the invitation suite, flowers, welcome bags, my wedding look and the classic color scheme of the day!

The Most Gorgeous Dress We’ve Ever Seen

For all of the brides that are reading today, I think we can stand in solidarity on one very important thing…the gown. We want to look in the mirror and believe that this dress was made for this moment, this girl, this day. It’s everything. And one look at the bride in this next gorgeous wedding and I think the world will agree…this dress was made just for her. It’s perfection. Add in an incredibly gorgeous design plus photographs from Simply Sarah that will bring you to tears and you get a gallery to obsess over.

From the bride…We met the old fashion way! In March of 2010, we were both out with friends and as fate would have it, ended at a bar on the Lower East Side. We instantly caught each other’s eye, though much credit is also due to one friend (who shall remain nameless) and his funny but decidedly bad dance moves – they were quite the conversation starter! By the end of the evening, we had exchanged numbers and went on a date the following Monday.

When we got engaged, we had been together over five years and had recently celebrated my birthday, however this one was without physical presents as Craig claimed my gift was an activity “unavailable” until a later date. Weeks later, due to bad weather, the surprise kept getting rescheduled and Craig, dropping a series of bizarre and completely misleading hints, had me completely stumped. Finally, on October 7th – a Wednesday – Craig told me to pack an overnight bag & after much mystery, we eventually boarded a private yacht and I was told that my birthday gift was a re-creation of one of our first dates. At sunset he popped the question to which I replied “Yes, Really??? Thank you!!!”and rapidly put him in a loving chokehold-like hug. That evening we checked into a suite at the Standard Hotel (another special place for us), ordered room service, ate french fries, and were just happy to start the next part of our story.

My favorite part of the wedding had to be our ceremony, especially because of our amazing string quartet & our meaningful program. We had changed officiants two weeks prior which resulted in some INTENSE, last minute marriage preparation sessions that really reminded us of why & how much we love each other. Our priest took letters we had written about each other & incorporated it into our ceremony which was so heartfelt and meaningful. Our second favorite part was getting to see everyone in the Anderson House gallery at cocktail hour – it was so beautiful & the first time we got to greet all our loved ones, friends & family, finally celebrating our wedding day.

Classic DC Wedding Just Blocks From the White House!

Imagine a Washington DC wedding that’s classic as can be, set just down the block from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Rachel and Tommy took that vision and ran with it, bringing on some amazing vendors like Kate Ignatowski, Federal City Caterers, Amie Decker Beauty, Buttercream Bakeshop and Joanna August, just to name a few. Pop to the gallery for even more imagery to inspire.

From Kate Ignatowski PhotographyRachel and Tommy threw a classic DC affair full of elegant details – all just a couple blocks from the White House. From the exquisite design in the Hay-Adams where Rachel had her finishing touches to the church where they said the vows, full of presidential history.

As the long summer sun started to set, everyone gathered in the courtyard of the Decatur House for cocktails and conversation – it really was a sophisticated oasis in the city. Their party went into the night with dancing and soulful live music. It was my absolute pleasure getting to work with these two very sweet people and their families!

A Playful, Modern Wedding That’s Anything But Stuffy

Brian and Nicole weren’t interested in a stuffy celebration, but instead wanted a wedding that felt like a party with all their favorite people. The night included good food, good drinks (pre-ceremony popcorn, anyone?), a playlist hand-selected by their guests and Lisa Ziesing of Abby Jiu behind the lens. This, my friends, is a happy day done right.

FromLisa Ziesing of Abby Jiu Photography… They wanted to party and they did, all while eating delicious food. Bar was the focus and music was important (on the RSVP cards, guests were asked for a song request, which was later played at the wedding). Nicole and Brian live in the Shaw neighborhood in DC, so it was no surprise they picked Long View Gallery down the street for their venue.

Food was very important to the couple. They had a taco station setup called “chipotle Sunday” in honor of N+B getting chipotle every single Sunday. They are also huge movie-goers, so popcorn was handed out as a pre-ceremony, along with pre-ceremony specialty cocktail, to get everyone ready for the night!

The menu reflected a theme of “around the world” in shaw (their DC neighborhood). They both are huge foodies and love to eat. The menu mimicked a restaurant in the neighborhood, Sundevich, one of their go-to spots. They were trying to pull all of their favorite foods into one.

There was a “Bride’s Seat” at the Bar – Nicole is known to have her spot at the bar, so it would only be fitting to have a fancy seat at the bar for her on the wedding day! And maybe a note about sunglasses never leaving Nicole’s face, hence the bridal party recessional with the white shades and having them for all guests during dancing.

To make things light-hearted and playful, airplane bottles were used as escort cards with a legend to help guests find their seats. They love to play games, so this was the perfect way to show that!

All of the wording throughout the stationery/paper goods was playful and informal and also unique. The quote we used for the save the date set the tone and expectation for the wedding and that it was going to be fun, fun, fun!

Classic + Chic Sunrise DC Engagement

Eager to beat the Washington DC summer crowds, these two lovebirds – and Shannon Moffit in tow – started bright and early, visiting the Lincoln Memorial and the beautiful reflecting pool. Decked out in chic ensembles, engagement pics were captured and special memories were made – see them all in our Vault gallery right this way!

From Shannon Moffit Photography… Rachel and Vince live a true city lifestyle, so it was only fitting for us to meet in the heart of Washington DC for their engagement session. If you have ever been to Washington DC in the summer, you know that it can get crowded, so we decided to start bright and early as the sun crept across the reflecting pool and up the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. It was quite the peaceful experience! Rachel looked stunning, first wearing a deep blue cocktail dress with bow, and second wearing a pink cap-sleeve dress. A gold chunky necklace, earrings, gold band engagement ring, and nude pumps completed her classically elegant look! Vince’s suit also looked sharp and made Rachel’s outfits pop. These two are getting married in Charlottesville next spring!

From the Bride-to-be… Vince and I camped and hiked in the proposal spot two years ago. We wanted to recreate that trip because the view at the top of the mountain is so beautiful. The top is basically a saddle and grassy meadow with a 360 view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. We got to the top and he acted like he had to get something out of his first aid kit for a blister. I was snapping pictures and wasn’t paying him any attention. Once I sat down beside him (again, not paying him any attention), he asked me to stand up and then said the most beautiful things about us and our lives together. It was the sweetest thing and I continue to tear up as I think about it.

A Totally Chic + Modern Wedding in Washington DC

Just when I thought we’d seen it all, Lisa Ziesing for Abby Jiu Photography sends along this stunner of a celebration that totally redefines modern glamour. An effortless orchestrated soiree by Grit and Grace Inc., it’s one of the sweetest ceremonies we’ve ever had the pleasure of witnessing, and thankfully we’ve got it all waiting for you to fall in love with too via The Vault!

What is the story of how you met?

Eddie was the president of a LGBT tennis club in DC (Capital Tennis Association). Michael was a new member and they met at a holiday social. Michael introduced himself as a new member and they spent the night talking about movies and tennis and found a fun connection. Eddie followed up with a Facebook friend request and that led to a first date!

Who popped the question and how?

Michael popped the question at Christmas of 2014. He gift wrapped a set of bespoke cufflinks of two grooms and asked the question as we opened up Christmas gifts.

Favorite part of your wedding day?

Being able to spend time with all of friends and family. We were blessed to share the day with so many friends at such a beautiful location. The toasts from our close friends over the years were incredibly special and heartfelt and captured our relationship, personalities and friendships with so many.

What were your connection to Friday’s location and officiant?

Joe was the first openly gay federal judge appointed by President Clinton in 1996. We met Joe a few years back at wedding of another friend that he officiated. We got to know Joe the year better leading up to the wedding and found him to be such a loving, charming and generous person. He loves marrying people and was so gracious in offering his time and chambers for the ceremony for our direct family members.

Did you wear anything specific or meaningful on your wedding day?

We had a couple of special items for our wedding day. Our suits were designed by Jill Lynn from Trunk Club and we had some fun details in the suits like “I do” embroidered underneath our collars and the date of the ceremony embroidered inside the jacket. Jill also helped design custom matching vests and ties for both the ceremony and the reception. Lastly, my cousins Staci and Alex had “equal” sign tie tacks made special for the day as a wedding gift using pieces of my grandmothers wedding ring. They were such a surprise and such a lovely gift.

A Unique Multicultural Wedding in Washington D.C.

Multicultural weddings? They’re kind of our jam. The blending of two families, two backgrounds, two sets of traditions is beautiful in so many ways and lucky for us, Haithem and Azza felt the same. They planned a day with thoughtful nods to both their backgrounds and brought on Annamarie Akins to make sure not even a second was missed. More right here!

From Annamarie AkinsWhen I first met Haithem and Azza, I knew right away that I was going to love being a part of this sweet season in their lives. It was such a gorgeous day filled with love and the blending of their two cultures and families.

The day began at the Hotel Monaco in Alexandria followed by the ceremony and reception at Fairfax Hall. We ended the evening at sunset with a perfect lighting atop the Kennedy Center! The place was fitting because it was where Azza and Haithem first held hands and told each other that they liked one another.

It was so special to be up there at the end of their wedding with them, and such an honor to capture their day!

Utterly Romantic Ballroom Wedding at the St. Regis

Eleni and Brett’s 12-year love story deserved a wedding day of epic proportions. And thanks to a vendor crew including A. Dominick Events and Edge Flowers, that’s exactly what they got. Bonnie Sen photographed their perfectly classic celebration at the St. Regis and the bride’s most memorable moment of the evening included asking her new husband how much time they had left of the perfect day. “Without pause, he replied, all the time in the world.”

“I turned to my husband and asked how much time do we have left?

Without pause, he replied, all the time in the world.

-Eleni, The Bride

From the Bride…When you’ve been together with someone for twelve years, marrying your best friend and planing your dream wedding is pretty easy and really fun.

Our wedding day was exactly what we wanted and hoped it would be. The love, kindness, and company of our family and close friends made the weekend truly special and unforgettable. We started the wedding celebrations with an intimate rehearsal dinner at a Greek restaurant followed by a roof deck welcome cocktail party for all of the out of town guests. We cherished every moment of that weekend including getting to spend as much time as possible with the people we love. Our guests made the trip from all over the country; the farthest distance traveled was my family from Greece. My Godfather, who traveled from Patras, Greece, married us. We were the first couple that he ever married and didn’t rehearse a single line with him. His script and performance were both charming and heartfelt.

While most of the month was unusually rainy, our wedding day had pristine weather. Luckily we were able to enjoy the hotel’s beautiful courtyard for our wedding ceremony which was perfect for our adorable flower girl, Olive, who ran down the ceremony isle barefoot wearing a flower crown. Our Dad’s and my brother gave beautiful wedding toasts that left guests in tears. Family and friends danced the night away to our favorite tunes taking breaks to pose for the photo booth and snacking on passed donuts and treats from the candy bar.

At the last minute we decided to do a sweetheart table so that we could share our first meal as husband and wife, but also so that we could cherish a room filled with those we love the most. Time truly flies on your wedding day.

My most memorable moment of the wedding was when we were sitting at our sweetheart table sometime after dinner and before dancing. I turned to my husband, Brett, and asked how much time do we have left? Without pause, he replied, all the time in the world.

Couple’s ‘First Home’ Engagement Session with their Sweet English Mastiff

This engagement session everything (and then some). Celebrating their new status with the sweetest at home e-sessionAbby Jiu Photography captured every cozy chic moment to share. Graced with major interior design moments, the cutest couple ever, and a few puppy kisses, we’ve got all that and more waiting in The Vault!

From The Bride…Originally I didn’t want to do an engagement photo session. I generally don’t love pictures of myself, and I thought the whole process would be kind of uncomfortable. However, after talking to our photographer, the amazing Abby Jiu, she convinced me that doing an engagement session would be the best thing, precisely because of those reasons. She said that the engagement session would give both my fiance, Doug, and me a chance to get comfortable with her, and with being photographed in general. Also, we would get the opportunity to see professional photos of ourselves before the wedding day.

Everything she said made complete sense, but I still wasn’t sure. After talking about it with Doug, and pretty much anyone else who would listen, I decided we should trust the expert, and just go for it. And I will tell you honestly, I am SO SO happy I did!! Everything Abby said was true. The experience of the photo session was beyond helpful, and then seeing the beautiful photographs that came from it, just made us more excited for what our wedding photos would look like. And for a couple who doesn’t like how they look in most photographs–that in and of itself was amazing!

Once we decided that the engagement session was a go, Doug and I thought long and hard about where we should do the shoot. I searched Pinterest, magazines, and of course Style Me Pretty for ideas, but I was having a really hard time deciding. Engagement sessions on the beach, or in a park under the trees, or in a garden, always look so beautiful, but that type of location just didn’t really feel like “us.”

Around the same time we were trying to decide on a location for the session, Doug and I closed on our first house. We bought a beautiful home in Capitol Hill, in Washington D.C. And after that happened, the location of our photo session seemed like a no brainer. What could be more “us” than our own home? Plus, if we did the shoot in our new house, we not only would be documenting the engagement, but also our first home together. I couldn’t think of anything more perfect.

Well…that isn’t entirely true. I thought of one more thing– our 150 lb English Mastiff, Buffy! She is our baby, and there is no way the engagement photos would be complete without her. Besides, Buffy has been part of our the wedding journey from the very beginning.

The night that Doug proposed, he told me we were meeting friends at the Four Seasons Hotel in Georgetown for drinks. I was almost finished getting ready, when Doug called me into the living room and there he was, down on one knee, with the most gorgeous ring, and beside him sat Buffy, tongue out, with a beautiful sign tied around her neck that said “Will You Marry My Daddy?” It was absolutely perfect! After the actual proposal, I assumed we were still meeting our friends for drinks to celebrate, but in reality Doug had arranged a surprise engagement party at the Four Seasons, with our families and close friends. The whole night was beyond amazing, but involving Buffy made it extra extra special.

Buffy was an integral part of the proposal, and she would be there the day of the wedding, so we decided she definitely needed to be in our engagement photos.

The day of the photo session came, and thankfully our new house came together. I was worried we wouldn’t have furniture to sit on, a dining room table, or curtains, (the curtains went up literally the day before the shoot) but thankfully it all came together. We took most of the photographs in our living room and dining room and a few right in front of our house. Doug and I felt very comfortable and relaxed because we were in our own space.

In terms of wardrobe, Doug and I just wanted to look like ourselves. I wore my favorite Equipment blouse, Rag and Bone Jeans, and a pair of old Prada flats. Doug wore his favorite blue J. Mclaughlin sweater and khakis. Obviously, the most important accessory was our beloved baby, Buffy, and she looks perfect wearing nothing at all!

In closing, I would tell a bride who may be hesitant about doing an engagement session that I was beyond happy that we decided to do it. Not only do I have photographs documenting that exciting time in our lives, but we also have pictures of our first home together! And I have to say, it absolutely helped in terms of being comfortable with Abby the day of our wedding.

So, the bottom line is, if you have the opportunity to do engagement photos, don’t pass it up. Oh- and definitely include your pup if you have one!

From Hieu Pham PhotographyA wonderful winter (February) wedding that was celebrated at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. This beautiful couple gushed pure joy in this blessed occasion.

From The Bride…The wedding was on February 27, 2016, which was a risk with the unpredictable weather. Alex and I were willing to take that chance for a winter formal affair, and luckily the day turned out to be sunny and 48 degrees! We got married at Holy Rosary Church in Washington, D.C. and the reception was at The National Museum of Women in the Arts. The color scheme was gold/neutral tones with sequin bridesmaid dresses, which complimented the décor of the museum. Although formal, we really wanted a fun event and the band did not disappoint! Spectrum kept the guests on their feet all night, and it was truly an evening to remember!

They Planned a Wedding Without a Neutral Shade in Sight

Pastels and neutrals have certainly had their day in the wedding color palette sun, but jewel tones? They’re the totally under-rated hues and we can’t get enough. Strawberry Milk Events helped guide the planning and design as this couple worked towards a “moody, autumnal fête without of shade of white in sight, save for her dress, of course.” Thanks to amazing vendors and Abby Jiu behind the camera, mission accomplished.

From Strawberry Milk EventsAlex and Doug wanted an organic meets traditional style wedding in Washington, DC. She wanted a moody, autumnal fete without of shade of white in sight, save for her dress of course.

We brought an intimate, garden party feel to the St. Regis, DC. The ceremony took place in a clear tent on the Astor Terrace with a gorgeous boxwood and jewel toned ombre flower wall. Antique chandeliers hung down the center of the tent lining the aisle.

Their four legged child, Buffy the Mastiff, was incorporated on their invitations and themed wedding welcome bags – and made a cameo appearance at the wedding itself!

They went inside for cocktails and dinner, and then dancing took place back out in the tent which had been transformed into a fun lounge including vintage velvet upholstered furniture and antique candelabras and tables all in golds and jewel tones. A mirrored and gold bar was a focal point, as well as a classic black and white dance floor. They got double use out of that boxwood ombre floral wall, now serving as the band backdrop (yay for repurposing!)

Dinner featured a long kings table lined with tons of candles, and crystal candelabras were accented with a touch of green. Linens were a champagne “acorn contour” linen that was remnant of wood grain. Centerpieces were flowy and lush yet unstructured in rich jewel tones.
