An Organic, Minimalist Wedding With Italian Inspiration

Chris and Alysha wanted to bring the romance of Italy to their Salt Lake City wedding and with one look at the images by Isabel Johansen… I say mission accomplished. They used simple, organic elements as the foundation of their design and brought on with Amber Reverie to work her floral magic. Prepare to be whisked away to a wedding you’d swear was set in Rome and find even more in the gallery.

From the Bride… Chris and I met 11 years ago. After having dated for so long, our wedding was not just a special event for us, but also for our families that had long awaited for this day to happen. My husband Chris remembers while he was waiting for me to walk down the isle how many people were emotional.

This particular day was also special because it was the only day that was available and would work during the summer for the two venues we wanted, and it so happened to be Chris’s parents’ anniversary day as well. I think it was almost fate because in a way we’re following in their footsteps. From the way Chris and I met which was the same way his parents met- at a party where Chris was playing the guitar and singing. And now by pure chance, we get married on the same date, 40+ years later. What’s more, the wedding ring we got for Chris looks almost identical to his dad’s original wedding ring, which he had lost years ago and Chris had never seen.

The weather and temperature couldn’t have been any more perfect for our beautiful outdoor wedding. We both love nature and being in the outdoors, so having the wedding outside was important to us (thank goodness Mother Nature decided to cooperate). That’s why we chose the Montage Resort up in the mountains of Park City, it provided a gorgeous backdrop for our ceremony. Then being outside in the courtyard of the luxurious Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City for the reception was magical. Going along with natural and outdoor inspiration, I wanted to make sure that our floral arrangements had an organic and natural feel. Our florist did an amazing job of doing that, from the loosely shaped/arranged bouquets, the naturally draping ceremony arch, the greenery running down the center of the tables at the reception, to the Italian Ruscus sprigs adorning each table setting.

A few years ago Chris and I visited Italy and fell in love with it. I mean who wouldn’t, right? Well, while I started planning for the wedding and looking through a lot of Pinterest boards I found myself pinning a lot of Italian inspired weddings. There’s just something very romantic and elegant, yet simple and organic about Italian inspired weddings. So we agreed to incorporate some Italian inspirations to our wedding, such as: Italian themed invitation suite, Rosemary salt party favors with “Grazie” tags (which means “Thank you” in Italian), lots of Italian Ruscus used in floral arrangements, and the hotel courtyard where we had the reception felt like we were somewhere in Rome.

We wanted our guests to have a memorable experience, so we did some of the traditional things but also mixed in some things that were a little more unique and fun. For example, I chose to have both my mom and dad walk me down the isle, I felt like it was more special that way. Instead of doing wedding vows, I wanted to do something that was romantic and symbolic of our new journey as husband and wife, so I surprised Chris with a dove release right after we said our “I dos”. Doves symbolize love, peace, happiness, and prosperity. For entertainment, we had a String Quintet playing all the way through the First Dance, after which we had fun singing karaoke and dancing to dance video games. Chris is in a band called All Hope Contained where he is the lead singer. His fellow band member, Robbie, was the Best Man, and my sister-in-law Heidi was the Maid of Honor.

I’m so lucky to have several talented family members that helped me with the DIY aspects of our wedding. One of my very talented sister-in-laws did all the calligraphy and made all the signs. Another sister-in-law did my hair and makeup. My mother-in-law added sleeves to my beautiful Pronovias dress. My husband Chris is an artist and painted all the insides of the envelopes with an Italian landscape. My parents helped me make the party favors. I made the menus. It was so fun having family help.

Our wedding was a dream come true. I loved everything about it. The only thing I would’ve done differently and the advice I would give a bride is to hire a wedding planner, it possible. Even though I would’ve still probably been very involved in all the details and decision-making (because that’s my personality), it would’ve been nice to have somebody that could help me keep track of everything and coordinate with the vendors as well as keep me more at ease the day of the wedding knowing that someone is in charge of overseeing everything.

Josh and Avonlea first met online. After a few weeks of sending messages back and forth, Josh asked Avonlea to meet for coffee. When Avonlea arrived at Starbucks on an icy Sunday morning, Josh was standing outside waiting for her. “That surprised me,” says Av. “It was so cold outside. I wasn’t sure if he was crazy or extremely chivalrous.” Right away, he struck Av as different from any other man she had met. The day after they met, Josh removed his profile from the dating site. “I finally found someone I wanted to focus on,” says Josh. Avonlea had been single and dating for nearly seven years, and had never met someone like Josh. His willingness to invest in one person and see where it would lead tipped her over the edge. “I was already in love,” she admits. “I knew right then he was a keeper.”

Josh proposed on the beach in his hometown of San Diego when Avonlea flew out to visit him during a weekend of training with the Navy. “I told him I wanted the center stone to be his birthstone, a sapphire. He surprised me with the ring. It was a dream come true. The man of my dreams asked me to marry him!”

The couple had two children each from previous marriages. Although they considered eloping, they decided that an intimate ceremony involving their children was the best thing to do. “We wanted our kids to know that this was about them, too. Our wedding needed to emphasize that we were coming together as a new family, and we wanted them to feel like a part of that.” They focused on designing an experience that placed more emphasis on celebration and less on tradition. From the beginning, the couple included their children in the wedding plans and let them help make small decisions. The kids selected their wedding day attire and were insistent that Josh wear his Navy uniform for the occasion. Avonlea says, “It was always a secret fantasy I had to marry a man in uniform. We used his background as a Chief Navy Diver to inspire most of the wedding theme.”

Avonlea wore a mermaid-silhouette wedding gown by Sottero and Midgley with layers of organza and lace. “It wasn’t at all the dress I had in mind when I started looking! But as soon as I put it on, I just felt different. It was special. The beading upon lace in the bodice was absolutely stunning, and the mermaid gown was perfect for our wedding theme! Every last detail was of the highest quality. The dress fit so well, and I felt that it really flattered my figure.”

The couple wrote their own wedding ceremony, borrowing examples from their pastor and doing research online for ideas on how to include the children in their ceremony. They decided to recite stepparent vows during the ceremony, promising to love, teach, and nurture their new stepchildren. Josh and Avonlea became tearful while reciting their vows, prompting the four children to cry, and moving all the witnesses to tears as well. A sand ceremony including the children followed, which shifted the mood back to smiles and laughter and set the tone for a solemn but joyful exchange of vows between the couple.

Following the wedding ceremony, the evening grew increasingly playful. The bride and groom’s parents and siblings delivered toasts that were touching, hilarious, and filled with love. Josh and Avonlea had taken ballroom dancing lessons and wowed their families with a choreographed first dance as husband and wife. The bride’s siblings flash-mobbed the wedding in gold parachute pants with a choreographed number of their own, and a wild dance party ensued. The bride and groom chose a sparkler send-off to coincide with a local state holiday, and as they made their getaway, the city sky was filled with fireworks.

“We couldn’t stop talking about what a perfect day we had as we drove off. Every detail was perfect, and most importantly, our guests had really enjoyed themselves. They’ll never remember what color the napkins were, but they’ll always remember how they felt at our wedding, and that’s the part that really matters.”

Guests Wore White for this Glam Winter Wedding!

Donovan and Santini wanted their wedding “to be a type of event guests had never attended before.” And man did they deliver. Thanks to industry legend, Colin Cowie they designed a black-tie affair with the women in white gowns to complement the snowy mountains of Utah surrounding them. Annie McElwain photographed this perfectly nontraditional day and you can find even more right here!

From Annie McElwain Photography… When I met with Donovan and Santini at their offices at CAA, they told me they wanted their wedding to be a type of event guests had never attended before. They wanted things to be a little different than at an average wedding. The first thing they told me was that they wanted the ceremony to be AFTER dinner, when guests were relaxed and already seated. The two long dinner tables created an aisle that each groom walked down with his mother, meeting in the middle on a stage for everyone to see.

As a photographer who has shot weddings for over 10 years, I had never seen a couple have such freedom from a traditional timeline. Starting immediately with cocktail hour allowed for a relaxed flow to the evening that everyone enjoyed. Donovan and Santini said the most important thing to them was that their guests, who came such a long way to celebrate with them, have a great time.

Next, for their black-tie affair, they asked the women to wear white gowns, which created an incredibly chic look against the backdrop of snow-covered mountains of Utah. Then, once the ceremony was finished, the guests were lead through a sparkler arch to the reception area, where everyone danced through the night. The whole event was classy and incredibly stylish and Colin Cowie helped them design and plan the wedding of their dreams.

Modern Mountain Wedding Set at a Distillery

With a ceremony set in the Utah mountains followed by a reception in a chic new distillery, it’s safe to say Traci and Michael’s wedding day was not your average “I do.” Instead, it’s a celebration designed one part modern and one part vintage as an ode to Traci’s love of heirloom treasures – including her mom’s lace veil. More from D’Arcy Benincosa Photography waiting in The Vault.

From the Bride…When we started talking about what we wanted for our wedding we both kept coming back to the same words, “Simple, understated, classy and timeless”. I guess you could say our wedding theme was restoration hardware meets vintage chic.

We were having a really tough time finding an outdoor venue in Orange County, CA so when Mike’s good friend, Eric Leblang who is also the F and B Operations Director at High West suggested we come look at the new HW Distillery, we did. It was love at first sight! We knew after being there for almost 4 hours and not wanting to leave, we had found the perfect place to get married!

Mike’s family has a home in Park City, which has always held a special place in his heart. The stars aligned and everything felt meant to be. We had our first look there in the backyard next to the old log cabin. Even our dog Duke came running out to be part of the pictures and celebration. It was perfection!

I grew up going to antique swap meets with my mom and sisters and just love vintage treasures. I wanted to find a way to incorporate some of these timeless pieces into our special day. My mom and I had so much fun collecting over 200 brass candlesticks for the tables, old windows to write the seat assignments on, vintage crystal for our wedding glasses and fun old linens to cover the hay bales for the ceremony.

My mom surprised me and let me wear her veil made of French lace that she had made and wore for her/my parent’s wedding over 40 years prior! We also were fortunate enough to use their cake cutter and server from their wedding day too.

Our wedding was all about incorporating little things that are important to both of us in subtle ways. On our first date we challenged each other to an artichoke cook off so we had our table numbers sitting in raw whole artichokes. Traci’s favorite color is yellow so her bouquet had hints of yellow. We literally tied the knot during the ceremony, which is symbolic to both Traci’s many years of sailing in Southern CA and also Mike’s Irish heritage. Mike loves fly fishing so all the guys had fly boutonnieres instead of flower boutonnieres.

The other thing that was really important to us was to make sure our wedding party was as comfortable and had as much fun as possible! We all know being a bridesmaid or a groomsman is an honor, however it can come with some eye rolling requests. We didn’t want that. Our groomsmen wore mismatched gray suits that they already owned and our bridesmaids got to pick out and/or buy a dress of their choice that they would love to own and wear again. This way we knew everyone would feel as beautiful and handsome as possible! When you feel good it shows and our wedding party was on point!

We feel extraordinarily lucky to have D’Arcy as our wedding photographer, Amber as our florist, Megan Zeitner as our videographer, DJ Pauly and the staff at High West to bring our vision to life! It was the Best. Day. Ever and we loved every minute!

Mountain Luxury Wedding Inspiration That Scales New Heights

Can we please discuss how incredibly beautiful this inspiration from Lexia Frank Photography is? Combining the talented planning of Tracie Domino Events with the undeniably breathtaking scenery of Park City, it’s a gallery so beyond beautiful that words simply won’t do it justice. Add in some pretty stationery from A&P Designs and we’re pretty much speechless. See it all in The Vault!

From Tracie Domino EventsSince my first visit to Park City a little over 13 years ago – and MANY trips since, I’ve been inspired by the gorgeous setting of this fabulous mountain town. Home of the Sundance Film Festival and one of America’s favorite ski towns, Park City and The St. Regis Deer Valley offer the perfect blend of small town hospitality paired with big city luxury.

The St. Regis Deer Valley provided a spectacular backdrop for this styled shoot. Shot entirely on film by Lexia Frank Photography, we wanted to incorporate the natural elements with a bit of glam. A style that is the perfect match for the fashionable city couples who chose Park City for their destination weddings. We assembled a dream team of creative partners from as far away as Florida and Oregon to make sure every detail was flawless.

MMD Events designed the most beautiful table with luxurious ruffle linens, rose gold silverware and decorative accents, a romantic mountain-inspired centerpiece of florals and drift wood, antique details, candles, wooden chargers, satin napkins and sequin napkin bands.

A and P Designs created the most beautiful letter pressed invitations and menus to compliment the design.

The gorgeous Reem Acra gown by Blush Bridal Sarasota added to the elegance and was a perfect compliment to the destination.

We wanted to create a piece of work that demonstrates how you can utilize the natural beauty of the surroundings and this spectacular venue to bring a soft, romantic glamour to the mountains.

From D’Arcy Benincosa PhotographyThe heat and warmth of summer time leads to a new idea for your wedding day. Instead of traditional whites and ivories, what about a navy base with a splash of summer orange and pink and vibrant yellow? These colors are bold and oftentimes difficult to capture with the right mood, however, styled here effortlessly by Ashley of Tinge Floral, the colors work to create a vibrant summer wedding theme.

From Rachael Ellen EventsWhen I say that Lauren was the sweetest bride I have ever met I am not joking. Working with her and her mother to plan this event was a dream and I was so happy with the way it turned out. It was so fun to bring to life her girly side through this art gallery reception complete with a 15-foot flower wall by Lizy Bowden and fun details by Lavender + Pine. This wedding was everything that a spring wedding should be– bright, feminine, and fun! The couples wedding was on one of the rainiest days of spring– a good luck charm! The guests enjoyed the spring shower whilst inside a stunning contemporary art gallery, eating gourmet pizza and lemonades. They then danced the night away in the art gallery that we transformed into a garden wonderland. The tables were set with bright linens to match the brides bubbly personality along with romantic garden inspired florals and graphic gold details.
