Snowing in March seems a little crazy to this California girl but apparently it happens and sometimes it happens on your wedding day. The couple behind this Dallas wedding did not let that dampen their spirits or their party. They had an all out vintage wedding filled with DIY touches snow or no snow and they even invited their adorable dog. On March 20, 2010, in Dallas, Texas, it snowed. It also just so happened to be Travis and my wedding day. What was planned to be a beautiful wedding beside the lake turned into an impromptu, yet cozy, fete inside our venue. Thank goodness for the back-up plan, right?
From the moment I got engaged I knew that the most important thing to me was that Travis and my wedding was personal. None of the run of the mill, everyday, over and over again business you see at weddings. Unique was the only way to go. So for 15 months my parents, myself, and Travis spent countless hours perusing antique malls, antique shows, fabric stores, estate sales, etc. to ensure that our wedding was one filled with vintage, kitschy, eye-catching trinkets that would make our wedding both personal and original. I’m a total vintage nut. Sincerely, I was born in the wrong decade. So naturally that was the vibe we went for at our wedding. Oh, and birds. I have a thing for birds. And of course, a lot of kitsch was thrown in the mix. But again, everything was from the heart and personal. For example, my grandmother passed over 10 years ago, but she was there via her Lemon Meringue Pies, made from her recipe, displayed on cake stands with a note describing their significance. Countless of things at our wedding were DIY. Table overlays? Sewed by mom. Hanky pillows in the lounge? Embroidered by me and sewn by mom. (Notice a trend, I, sadly, cannot sew). Our menus were hand typed each with my vintage typewriter by Travis and myself. Same for our favor wine labels. In lei of escort cards, I took a calligraphy class and wrote out all of the names of our guests and put them into frames that my dad painted. An array of bird vases were displayed in collections on the tables. Birds on the cake, birds on our invites, birds literally everywhere. And I loved it! They decor was thought over time and time again. Obsessed, you could say my mother and I were. And it was so much fun to see it all come together.
What I loved the most, though, was the warmth of the room the night of our wedding. Forced to stay inside due to the snow, everyone stayed cozy in the main room. We laughed, we danced, and it all seemed like everyone had known each other for a long time. Home. Comfort. I was overwhelmed with gratitude that night. Oh, and speaking of comfort food. That’s exactly what we served. We’re Southern, and we embraced it that night. Chicken Fried Chicken, Shrimp and Grits, Mashed Taters, Cobbler (two kinds), Lemon Meringue Pie, Cornbread, Fried Green Tomatoes. You better believe Travis and I found time to eat! The icing on the cake was having our dog, Olive, there. No exaggeration when I say we’re a little in love with this dog. She walked down the aisle and made her presence known with a loud bark during our first dance. Love.

Ashley - I can't remember the exact dimensions, but my mom and laid out the fabric and measured so it would fit the 60" round tables. It was a trial and error process! ;)

Imitation being the sincerest form of flattery (as the saying goes) gives the tried & true, time-honored decor and design it's own rightful place in wedding planning.
I'm glad this couple was able to infuse so much of their personalities into their own day... I'm sure it was enjoyed by their friends and family.
