When Matthew proposed, he worked hard to surprise me (not an easy task to surprise a nosey girl like me!). One night, Matthew told me that he had to work late in Maryland and would not be able to come visit for the weekend. I made dinner plans with my friends at the Blue Talon in Williamsburg. During dinner, Maddie told me that she just received a text message that there was a research group at the Williamsburg Lodge and she really wanted to go get their autographs. After dinner, Maddie, Kaci, and I drove to the Williamsburg Lodge until Maddie stopped her car and asked me if she knew of a garden near the Lodge because that was where the group was meeting. I, still oblivious to what was going on, said “Well there is the rose garden where Matt’s parents got engaged to your left.” Maddie swerved her car to the front of the rose garden and Kaci and Maddie both screamed “Get out of the car!” while speeding off with me still thinking they were playing a trick on me. I decided to walk down the stairs of the sunken rose garden only to find no one there. I kept walking until I saw Matthew come out from behind an archway with a huge smile on his face. Matthew walked toward me, knelt down on one knee with an open box in his hand, and asked me to marry him in the same spot that his father asked his mother to marry him. Matthew then told me that he planned a weekend for us in Ocracoke, North Carolina to celebrate our engagement!

While planning our wedding, I knew I wanted our personalities to shine through in every aspect. Both Matthew and I have traditional, classic taste with a modern twist. We decided to have our wedding ceremony in the Catholic Church where my parents were married and where I grew up. Matthew’s father is an Anglican pastor, so we wanted to incorporate both of our families’ religious traditions. He gave a memorable and personal sermon that made the ceremony seem intimate even with a room full of 400 people. The ceremony music was also very important to us. We had a trumpeter, organist, a string quartet, and a soloist who all beautifully performed songs we selected together. As I walked down the aisle, I wore my great grandmother’s diamond and sapphire ring as my something old, borrowed, and blue. My grandmother passed away one month before my wedding, so honored her by carrying her handkerchief in my bouquet.

Matthew and I chose the Chrysler Museum of Art for our reception venue not only because we loved the Renaissance style of the museum’s atrium, but also because I studied Art History in college. For the flowers and décor, I wanted a romantic atmosphere with blush tones, ivory, and metallics. My team at Isha Foss Events transformed my vision into a breathtaking display of draped arches, cascading crystals, and various tones of pink flowers.

While our wedding was a formal black tie affair, Matthew and I wanted our reception to be a party for our guests to enjoy good food and great music. For this reason, we decided to do heavy hors d’ ouvres instead of a sit down dinner. We had themed food stations around the museum with our favorite cuisine including fresh seafood on the rocks, a southern fare station, a beef carving station, and a chocolate bar. Instead of assigned seating, Isha Foss designed a lounge-like cocktail set up that outlined the dance floor and gave a contemporary spin on the traditional black tie affair.

My two favorite memories from our wedding day were our First Look and walking down the Chrysler’s marble staircase into the reception for the first time as husband and wife. Matthew and I met in the museum’s garden before the ceremony. I loved being able to share a quite and private moment with my soon to be husband before our night of craziness ahead. I will never forget the look on his face when he first saw me (luckily, my photographer Jeff Greenough captured this moment on film). My second favorite memory from our wedding day occurred when my father introduced us to our reception. I felt like royalty on my new husband’s arm as we walked down the staircase and moved straight into our first dance. The entire day was the perfect representation of Matthew and me as a couple, and it could not have been possible without the hard work of our family and all of our fabulous vendors.

From My Simple Details … With the Mary Katherine and Mike’s love for wine, the groom’s background near the Finger Lakes and the bride’s Maryland and Northern Virginia background, we planned a wine tasting/show-off between Northern Virginia wines and Finger Lake wines with a sommelier during cocktail hour. With the bride’s love for Maryland crab cakes we also planned for a crab cake station for dinner and for the groom, a special Primanti Bros. station.

The unique alter area was made from antique wood wine holders, lots of blue wine bottles and Holly’s florals. Since both the couples initials are MK, the MK2 theme was present thoughout the event with wood carved and letter elements. Other unique details included the wood slice wine tags with hand calligraphy for guest favors that we hung on twine during cocktail hour. Cheese and chocolate food paring for the wine tasting during cocktail hour, a wine barrel lid lasy susan that was imprinted with their last name and the date and used as the guest book with permanent paint pens. Some of the centerpieces also included wine crates with the lids slid partially open to elevate blue candles in glass mason jars on the lids. Invitations were fabric with sunflower design and natural brown paper envelopes.

From Marta of Marta Locklear… Megan and Brandon’s wedding was absolutely stunning and a perfect infusion of both of them. Pure style with the graphite gray and soft peach tones throughout, and perfect hints of Brandon’s “Rocker” personality with surprise checkered Vans and steel gray glittered shoes for Megan. We started the day with a first look session to make the most of the gorgeous Historic Mankin Mansion grounds and daylight, and then wandered into a perfect sunset ceremony. The ceremony was lined with flower-filled mason jar vases on shepherds hooks in a sea of white chairs. Megan practically floated down the aisle with her dad while the sunlight lit her face under her blusher veil. During the ceremony, Megan and Brandon each wrote a letter to each other explaining why they loved each other and sealed and locked them into a vintage wine box to be read on their five-year anniversary. During cocktail hour, while the couple enjoyed a few moments together in the Carriage House the guests mingled under peach and gray paper lanterns and string lights while sipping their drinks from striped straws. The grounds had large chess boards for entertainment. For the reception, an infusion of graphite gray table cloths, peach cloth napkins, gold rimmed chargers and white and peach florals definitely set the tone for this wedding day. The cake was absolutely amazing and even studded with jewels! The guests enjoyed a full dessert table with take-away boxes, a personal slideshow from the best man, a fully-catered dinner and lots of dancing! The details were amazing!

From the Bride… I married the boy down the street. My first kiss, my only love. When Jon and I got engaged, my immediate desire was to design a wedding that truly reflected us. We grew up together, share the same friends, and have been a part of each other’s families for almost a decade. I wanted to create the most authentic celebration for the two of us.

I have always had a very clear vision for my big day – an intimate garden, soft pink flowers, and LOTS of lace. The feeling was definitely rustic and romantic. I strongly believe in the perfection of imperfections and actively made decisions that would create visual interest. I asked my girls to wear a champagne dress. I encouraged them to wear something that they loved – no matter what material or style – the more embellishments the better! The boys were asked to wear a navy suit. Each person we asked to be in our wedding was so important to us and I think by subtly distinguishing everyone, they maintained their identity. This was important to me.

I was constantly looking for little ways to honor our friends and family. I made my necklace out of a ring my father had given to my mother and I hung my father’s wedding band from it. For the escort card station, I found three rustic doors to hang each guest’s table assignment from. Each name tag was attached to a single skeleton key. The center door contained pictures of our parents and grandparents on their wedding day. I think it was a beautiful way to honor love. I also asked my two older brothers to officiate the ceremony. They were inspiring and poignant and it meant the world to us to have them stand up there with us. I found that when you make things so personal and so important to you, there is absolutely no way anything can go wrong!

I wouldn’t change one decision I made. My advice is to prioritize! Care deeply about a small handful of things and base all other decisions around them. Have perspective and never lose sight of your initial vision. Surround yourself with people who are just as excited as you are to plan your big day. My planner, my florist, and my amazing photographer could not have been more talented or wonderful. I owe Crystal Whitaker and The Event Company everything – when things get dramatic or stressful, having trust in the people who are helping you makes everything right.

Geoff proposed to me on a beautiful fall day (my birthday!) on one of our favorite bike rides in Virginia.  He had prepared a special picnic and champagne and we were able to celebrate while enjoying great views of our adopted “hometown” of Washington, DC.

We enjoyed about one week of engagement before we went into planning mode!  We knew we both wanted an outdoor summer wedding, and it was easy to decide on Woodend Sanctuary after seeing what a beautiful setting it would provide for an outdoor ceremony.  Of course, when the only availability was in July, we ignored the awful DC summer weather and booked it right away!

After picking the location, we talked about how we wanted our wedding to look and feel.  We wanted fun, relaxed, and natural, but something special too.  Luckily, our next move was meeting with Kate Harlan from Simply Chic Events.  She was able to take our long list of random adjectives and provide us with a vision that was perfect for us.  Working with Kate for the months leading up to the wedding made everything so much more relaxing – and fun!

We settled on a color scheme of whites and natural materials (wood, burlap, cork, etc.), with pops of yellows, blues, and greens.  Given our engagement story and favorite activities, we also decided to incorporate biking and wine into our wedding decor.  Kate introduced us to Niki Chandler, a talented local artist, who put together personalized welcome bags with a map of our engagement trek, a guestbook poster, custom pint glasses, and programs and menus that featured our colors and flowers.

We were also lucky to have the assistance of our families in putting together our perfect day.  Geoff’s mom sewed a burlap table runner for the head table and lace runners for the picnic tables.  Geoff’s sister and my mother assembled stir sticks, seating cards and place cards with our bike theme.  My brother even served as the officiant!  One of our favorite details were our “family trees” – we had family members and close friends send pictures of us and our families through the years and we hung them on jute twine around three beautiful trees for guests to enjoy during cocktail hour.

We could not have been happier with the way the evening came together!  We were SO lucky with the weather and enjoyed an unseasonably cool weekend.  The outdoor ceremony was just as we had hoped, and the floral arrangements and bouquets by Holly Heider Chappel were perfectly summery, natural and amazing.  Our guests enjoyed some signature cocktails (“Texa-Ritas” and “Publix Punch”) while checking out our family trees and sampling from the rustic cheese table.  The dinner took place in a tent attached to the mansion, and the decor was breathtaking.  Kate had created the most amazing and unique chandeliers out of wine corks that we had collected over time.  The head table looked so magical lit by the candles hanging from the chandeliers and the lanterns and votives lining the table.  Geoff and I were the last to leave our own wedding – just a perfect day.

From the Bride…We chose Charlottesville, VA as our wedding destination since we both graduated from UVA.  We found DelFosse Vineyards in Faber, VA (about 30 mins away), nestled in the rolling green hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and immediately knew it would be the perfect backdrop for a casual yet elegant celebration.  We didn’t opt for the overly themed vineyard wedding (i.e. no bottle corks, wine bottles, or grapes)…but instead kept the decor rustic and a little whimsical.  While it rained on our wedding day, everything went off without a hitch since we had already planned on using a tent for the reception, and had the beautiful tasting room with floor to ceiling windows as our ceremony back up.  One of my wonderful bridesmaids also surprised our wedding party with super cute plaid rain boots and clear umbrellas (from Target) which made for some GREAT photo pops before the ceremony, and also served as comfy footwear during the reception.

The overall color scheme was fuchsia/magenta (the bright purply magenta, not too pink – try describing this “color” for a year!), silver, and white. The J.Crew Arabelle dresses in Spiced Wine captured this color perfectly.  Bridesmaids chose their own pewter/darker silver shoes.  We also found a great-fitting Tommy Hilfiger suit in Shark Skin gray which went great with the more casual and elegant feel of the wedding.  We shopped around online for a cross hatched magenta tie for the groomsmen, which went great with the J.Crew dresses. I really couldn’t believe how well everything matched. Wedding colors were carried throughout the flowers (white peonies and tulips, lavender sweet peas and fuchsia dendrobium orchids), favor boxes and matchbooks.

Decor and centerpieces were kept simple.  We had a large white tent, perimeter lighting, white lanterns in varying sizes, and hanging votive candle holders.  The florist’s husband handmade the wooden boxes containing the flower arrangements on half of the tables, or the floating candles and fuchsia orchids on the other half.  Guests found their seats at the river rock place card table.  I hand wrote each guest’s name on one side, and their table name on the other.  Table names were “One of our favorite places”, displayed by hand made name cards on a small tree trunk base.  Not just vacation destinations, but our favorite fast food joint (In ‘N Out), Tim’s Lazy Boy, Tree Hill (our favorite fictional destination – from the show One Tree Hill), etc.  When guests were seated, they found their hand made favor boxes containing 2 Ghirardelli chocolates, and 1 of 2 magnets (so couples wouldn’t get 2 of the same thing! We alternated magnets in every other box, which we could tell by the color of the ribbon).  One final cute touch was the Manzanita Wishing Tree that we used instead of a Guest Book.  Guests signed cards that said “Warm Wishes” (made by PaperPixie on Etsy), and hung them on the tree…we now have all of the tags with our guest’s messages to keep in a book. I also need to give a nod to Elizabeth Haslup for our invitations – they are her original art.  I worked with her to create a custom invitation showcasing our venue and us as a couple.  We got so much positive feedback, and it really set the tone of the celebration we wanted to have.

I truly loved our wedding day because everyone had so much FUN, including myself…and that was what we set out to do, to throw a great party in a beautiful setting.  I’d encourage brides to read about some of the standard wedding inputs, but to not shy away from personalizing certain things.  Above all be FLEXIBLE, and don’t take yourself or the wedding too seriously.  Do some DIY’s but don’t go completely overboard.  Don’t be afraid to shop around and buy that dream dress second hand.  Don’t freak out when it rains on your wedding day (but definitely have a back-up plan…thanks, mom!)….nobody knows the difference in what you planned to what happened instead, and they’re all following your lead in the mood of the day.

From Elisa B. Photography…Lindsey and Bryce’s engagement session was at The Richmond Museum of Fine Art. Their images were beautiful, and they were great to work with, so we couldn’t wait to see what their day would be like. “I’ve been all over Style Me Pretty” Lindsey had said, “I’m thinking peonies and succulents”. I was sold!

Lindsey did not disappoint! Their day was gorgeous, an outdoor ceremony (only slightly delayed by the rain) and in the background was a historic chapel and a weeping willow. Their custom cupcakes, chalkboard signs, fan programs, and ceremony exit all pointed to the thoughtful decisions Lindsey made about their day.

A wedding day is usually filled with friends and family, but I was struck by, in the midst of all of this, how focused Lindsey and Bryce were on each other. There were so many moments I looked over to see them stealing a kiss or sharing a look. These images were shot in a mix of digital and film media.

Andrew and I met in the fall of 2008. Me, a transplant from the suburbs of D.C., and Andrew, a Chicago ‘burbs-boy’ moved downtown. We were set up on a blind date by family members. To call it a blind date is accurate, but perhaps you should think of it as “triple-filtered” or “pre-approved.” True, we hadn’t ever met, but we had all the confidence we were meeting a person which with we could make it through a dinner. Why such a prediction? Call it sibling love: a sister’s careful and watchful eye.

Andrew’s sister, Aarin, began watching my nephew, Miles in the early fall of 2008.  Andrea, Miles’ mom, was part-time teaching, and both ladies became fast friends and were thrilled at their new found discovery . . . they both have a single, young sibling living in Chicago. The new matchmakers got to working. Andrew sent an email to set up a time to meet. That first email I received had seventeen words in the subject line!

At any length, I agreed to his proposal to meet for casual drinks — thinking it could easily turn into a pleasant, paid-for dinner. AVEC is where we met for the first time. It is Andrew’s favorite restaurant and gave him the comfort of familiarity; a “home-field” advantage. I did not know it then, but it was a test of my culinary taste, adventurous ordering and the all-important, sharing a plate of food. Drinks turned to four plates and hours ticked away at the bar. In true Chicago commuter fashion we said good night, polite thank you on the #8 bus. To most, this would have been the deal breaker, but it fit our way of living and became a big part of our dating life.

My last name is Lewis. Andrew’s last name is Clark. Thus, we are Lewis & Clark. In planning for our wedding we couldn’t pass up the much anticipated ideas of Lewis & Clark, but also keeping everything very much ‘us’, simple chic, with a twist on traditional. Our wedding was in my hometown of Northern Virginia. It ended up being a difficult search for the reception because most places were too small or too pricey. We went with a country club, which is not what we had planned but we were able to add elements that fit our personality and things we love. Our goal was for guests to know us better.

All the design work (invitations, name cards, table numbers, blog) were all designed by Andrew. Using the inspiration of the original journey of Lewis & Clark, he drew a line where I had lived and another line where he had lived, which created the base design for all our paper items and is found on all our items. To tie the theme together but not go over the top, we used Moleskine books to hold our invitation, as well as, a keepsake for our guests. For the front of the Moleskine Andrew designed a custom stamp to imprint our logo and get that “Lewis & Clark” feel. We used Moleskine books because it is something Andrew uses when sketching, writing ideas/thoughts, and is part of his everyday life.

The table numbers are one of my favorite elements of our wedding. Each table number represented an important number in our relationship. The numbers seem random, 3, 28, 250, and more. I found two sided frames from Ikea. One side has the table number and the other side shares the meaning. For example, table 250. The number of cents a Trader Joe’s Lava Cake costs and our favorite dessert. Or table 17. The number of words in the subject line of the first email Andrew sent me.
