From the Bride…I was determined to get married outside and not to have a guest count restraint. When we first started talking about the ranch as a possibility it was more of a dream that I thought couldn’t be a reality. I love the ranch because of all the family memories it holds and the West Valley with its big oak trees and boulders has always been my favorite spot. The more Joel and I talked about the possibility of getting married out there, the more inspired I felt and convinced I was that this was the perfect spot for us!

From Couture Events…With a natural color pallet, a few touches of lace, and an abundance of sunshine, stripes, and smiles, Dana & Joel’s wedding was a true breath of fresh California air. With just a field of dirt, a handful of great oak trees, and an array of boulders, we had the exciting opportunity to be creative with a true blank canvas. As tables and chairs were placed, linens draped from trees and laid on the ground, glass jars and dried flowers scattered along the aisle, the ranch was transformed into a whimsical woodland.

Dana’s affinity for the whimsical and dreamy shined through the simplest details– big bulb lights strung across the dance floor, ceremony happenings handwritten on chalkboard, and an array of mason jars, cursive cards, and candles. Dana decided on DIY dried flowers in order to have them ready a month ahead of time, avoiding the stress of making or buying florals the week before. Each bouquet was handmade with love and special care by her maid of honor, sisters, and wedding coordinator, Krystel. For an extra special touch, a few live gardenias were nestled into her bouquet on the day of the wedding.

Photographer Sean Walker captured even the hidden moments amidst the splendor and magic. An endearing embrace of daughter and father. A look of pure infatuation from wife to husband. The crooked grins of little boys in bow ties.

Everything about the day was charming. From the mix-matched bridesmaids dresses to the skinny ties and suspenders of the groomsmen. The couple opted out of black in favor of subtle greys, creams, blues, and purples. Rays of light radiated throughout the fields, trees, and across the sweet expressions on guests’ faces. The stunning bride glided down the aisle on a trail of burlap, to a homemade alter of draped canvas and gardenias, and into the arms of her handsome husband-to-be. The gentle, sweet aroma of lavender wafted through the ceremony site.

Only steps away was the reception. Even as the sun went down, the open field continued to glow, illuminated by love and delight. Dinner on tables of muslin and burlap, flushed with the soft romantic light of votives. Dancing amidst large trees. And to end an already flawless night, an intimate bonfire of friends and family sharing s’mores. As sparklers were lit and loved ones aligned, the radiant new bride and groom exited their perfect ranch oasis.

From the Bride… I hadn’t been to very many weddings; my parents’ wedding was on a mountain with less than ten guests and other family weddings were similarly small. No one really had any idea of etiquette or how to even begin planning (that’s when blogs like SMP became invaluable in inspiring me and helping focus my ideas). I had a vision for the day that I often had trouble articulating. I wanted it to feel like a 1920’s garden party, like something out of The Great Gatsby, but I also wanted eclectic, artsy, feminine touches. Too, it was important to me to be as environmentally conscious as possible. My husband was very easy-going, whatever made me happy made him happy, although he made it very clear he did not want to wear suspenders or a bow tie, and that some level of formality was important to him. We agreed that we didn’t want it to feel like a cookie-cutter wedding, and that great food, beautiful, natural surroundings, and good company, were our priorities.

We didn’t have a “color palette” or unifying theme (Which seemed to constantly stress people out…You don’t have a color scheme? You don’t have a theme? You are planning to do WHAT yourself?! Are you crazy?!). I had a million different ideas and at times wasn’t sure if I even knew the aesthetic I was “going for.” How could a wedding be ethereal and whimsical, simple and clean, artsy and earthy and fun and formal all at the same time? When one guest claimed, rather drunkenly, to be Jay Gatsby, and another, very sweetly, told me it looked like “an Anthropologie wedding” I knew somehow my vision had become reality.

I think the wedding felt very intimate, very homespun, because that’s exactly what it was, and had to be. We had a pretty small budget, and managed to stay under $10,000 for around 100 people. It helped that I am an artist, and was able to make a lot of things myself. I also did my own hair and most of the bridesmaid’s hair and make-up. DIY was the theme of the day, and probably a bit of an understatement. Aside from our gorgeous venue, Agua Linda Farm, and our absolutely amazing photographer, Elyse Hall, everything, from food to flowers to invitations, was done by friends and family.

There were times throughout the planning process, especially as I completed my student teaching and other degree requirements simultaneously (Did I mention, my husband and I graduated from the University of Arizona the WEEK before the wedding? It was a crazy time, absolutely bonkers, and I had the grey hairs to prove it.), when all I wanted to do was go back in time and elope. There were a ton of things that I’d had my heart set on but ran out of money or time to make them happen, or that didn’t happen quite as I’d planned, but now that it’s over I am so very thankful that I got to spend that time with the people who I love most in the world and feel overwhelmed, when I think back on it, with the support and graciousness of my beautiful family.

From the Bride…Nate and I have been together since high school (set-up for a town dance, true story), and were married on a Sunday afternoon in our hometown almost nine years later. After months of preparation and a week of chaotic details, head colds and thundery forecasts, June 5, 2011 unfolded as one big, beautiful, blue-skied gift. My husband and I are both Masters of Divinity students at Yale, pursuing careers in ministry and the arts, so we were super excited to design the ceremony ourselves, finding ways to mix tradition with funky liturgy and personal touches. My mother, an ordained minister, officiated along with our home church pastor. Children rang chimes, and our friends played violin, piano, guitar and drums, including a gorgeous version of “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing.” Nate and I each walked down the aisle, given to one another equally by all four parents. My nephew carried our rings in the secret compartment of an antique book. The vine leaf pattern on our custom programs and invitations was designed to match the lace pattern on my dress. My “something old” gold bracelet belonged to my great-grandmother and namesake. We had four readings: two scripture (Ruth & 1 John), one poem (Whitman), and one selection of rap lyrics (“The Light” by Common). To express both our unity and individuality, we wrote half our vows together, half on our own. Celebrating communion was the first thing we did as a married couple. My father-in-law baked the bread, and Nate and I served the elements, allowing for some of the most miraculous, intimate moments of the day.

At the end of the service, everyone followed the wedding party outside, where our band surprised guests with a jazzed up version of “He’s Got the Whole World in his Hands.” Flower girls passed out bubbles, and everyone surrounded us in one giant circle for the final blessing. This is my favorite memory, standing there with my new husband, literally encircled by love, support, and pure joy. Our reception was just down the road at Elm Bank (home of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society)—cocktails in the gardens, dinner and dancing in an old carriage house. The flowers were soft, simple, and whimsical: yellows, soft pinks and ivories, lots of peonies and ranunculus in fun containers. Our family friend helped mastermind the garden-party vision, finding wire plant stands, which we spray painted white and filled with potted plants that doubled as favors.

My craft-ambitions tend to surpass my actual skills at makin’ things, so my lovely bridesmaids came to the rescue to tie twine and stamp escort cards (which were clothespinned to a garden trellis). My dad took the prize for unexpected DIY extraordinaire, helping with bookmark favors I’d designed with favorite quotations (half I chose from Shakespeare, the other half from poems picked by Nate). The food was a big hit—seasonal veggies, family style sides like mac and cheese, passed mini-ice cream cones along with a traditional cake (gold with raspberry jam and lemon buttercream). Little bird salt-and-pepper-shakers I’d had in college became cake toppers. It was magical seeing all the details breathe themselves into life, but what sticks with me most is the whirl of faces, words of wonder, happy-tears and bear hugs. Nobody wanted to stop dancing, so we got the band to stick around for one more rocking set. Nate and I were the last ones to leave.

From the Bride…Dana and I met at Ohio University when his fraternity was paired with my sorority for a Greek fundraising event. We dated while I went to graduate school, but once I graduated, I was offered a great opportunity to work in Washington DC.  I knew Dana was special when he encouraged me to take the job and announced that he would move.  I followed my professional dreams to DC where we both now live and work, but once we were engaged, we knew we wanted to have our wedding with family and friends in Ohio.

The goal for the wedding was to add details and memorable touches but to not have anything too over the top.  I wanted it to look like we threw a fabulous dinner party with full flowers in a variety of shades of pink flowing over their vases.  We chose slate grey for the bridesmaid dresses and settled on classic tuxedos for the men.  We had a catholic ceremony at St. Joseph cathedral in downtown Columbus followed by a reception at the Westin hotel.  The Westin has a beautiful marble ballroom with stain glass windows and gold trim, which required minimal decorations.  The table numbers were displayed in corks, we added labels to Godiva chocolates for the favors, had personalized drink stirrers made, and my cousin designed invitations that matched our décor perfectly.  The escort cards were accented with pink cotton flower pins that guests then wore as the evening went on, and we displayed photos of our parents and grandparents at their weddings on either side of our guest book, which was filled with pictures of us as children and with family and friends through the years.

Moving away made it clear how important the relationships with our friends and family are to us.  Our wedding came together exactly as we had planned but was amazing because of the people.  I looked around at the end of the night and was surrounded by my friends and family, and standing next to my husband.

Well, the best of the best collaborated on this and wait til you see what they created! We have Momental Designs to thank for the amazingly creative styling and interpretation of the board. And where would we be without the show stopping photography from Sanderson Images? Nowhere, I tell ya! And the scrumptiously delicious desserts? Those are courtesy of the fabulous Lisa over at Delicious Desserts. And designing all those desserts is no easy work, but the peeps over at Desiree Spinner Events, pulled it off perfectly. From Kristy Rice at Momental Designs: I recall studying Dali in College. His surreal work is a mainstay in most beginner Art History courses and most of us recall his melting clocks and sandy landscapes filled with dreamlike imagery. In this shoot I was most inspired by Dali, the man and his expert use of color. Dali was a character to say the least; loved fussy detail and anything in excess. His existence was art; from the clothes he wore, words he spoke and movements he made. He was inspired by the nuance of life and found a way to pluck the most beautiful and enchanting details from everyday existence to make them artful and lovely. This shoot is just about that…how can couples look to their own lives for inspiration and infuse it into simple but striking details for their day? How can you craft a celebration around the stuff that makes you…you? In this inspiration scene we create sculpture from lovingly collected dishes, table linens are hand painted, a wedding dress becomes colorful expression and bouquets last forever as painted butterflies. We were also inspired by Dali’s collaboration with iconic fashion designer of the time, Elsa Schiaparelli, most known for her famed Lobster Dress. Words like, ethereal, dingy, dreamlike, sexy came to mind when visioning this shoot. Our inspiration board with its subtle reference to butterflies offered up a whimsical vibe needed in this otherwise moody scene.

From the start, Marc and I wanted a wedding that truly felt like us- fun, exciting, eclectic and a little different from the norm. Every little detail had a meaning behind it, making the day all the more special for both of us. We fell in love with the Carl House from the start. We loved the big backyard, the rustic, vintage feel of the decor and the brick wall backdrop where we’d say our vows- mostly, we loved how it felt like home. We wanted our guests to feel completely at ease to let loose and dance like crazy. The planning process was really a joint project. Marc was involved from day one- he built the wishing tree for our guests to sign when they first arrived at the wedding and handpicked the groomsmen’s outfits. Yellow has always been my favorite color and little bursts of it could be seen throughout the wedding. I wanted my bouquet to be unique and different- I fell in love with the billyballs in it and we used them throughout the ceremony and reception in the decor. My sister and I scoured Etsy.com for DIY ideas and we made the frame for the seating arrangement and the heart canvas that housed Marc and my engagement photos. We wanted each detail to have a twist on the traditional.

The ceremony was so special to both of us. We used our favorite songs for the processionals, exchanged five things we vowed to do for one another, and listened to our closest friends read lyrics from a cherished song and an inspirational book (Oh the Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss). We laughed the entire time and so did our guests. One of our readers actually fell out of her shoe as she walked to the microphone! It was perfect. The reception was an absolute blast and I think Marc and my personalities really resonated through. We used white tree branches with yellow flowers and candles hanging from them instead of traditional centerpieces. Marc competes in several triathlons throughout the year, so we used bikes in many of the details. My shoes and the bridesmaid’s shoes were from Vince Camuto, where one of the bridesmaids works in New York and I wore my mom’s wedding ring around my neck. The candles on the table came from a candle store I worked in during high school and we drank my dad’s favorite beer, Corona, from an Ole Miss tin to remember him and both our alma mater. Every detail had a story behind it and I was so happy with the way it turned out.

From the gorgeous Bride, Heather…

We really wanted our wedding to have a romantic backyard, garden vibe. It was truly the best day of my life adorned with antiques and twinkle lights. We held the ceremony then went off for pictures at Hosp Grove Loop which is a beautiful hiking trail with tons of eucalyptus trees in Carlsbad. We brought Brandon’s 61 VW which is one of his favorite possessions so it was fun to include this in some of our pictures. We really wanted our pictures to be romantic and timeless and along with our wedding, represent us. For the reception, our backyard was transformed into the perfect wedding location. Mirrors in the trees, lighting everywhere, a popcorn machine and candy bar, cigar humidor, a home made photo booth with pics for our guest book while an old victoral played. The reception was so very romantic. I think whenI got feed back from all of our friends and family, intimate was always a word they used. Along with the ultimate dance party!!! We boogied down!!  I think our wedding was truly put together by all of our friends and family. Without the help from our “power squad” it would have never happened. Seriously, how do you throw a wedding for 123 people with a 5,000  budget? ….with amazing friends and family there to donate time and a hand.

From Events of Love and Splendor:

Kristin and Mike were and absolute joy to work with from start to finish.  From the beginning, they envisioned a fun, unfussy, intimate and whimsical wedding that culminated in a great party.  They wanted everything to be visually arresting and beautiful, but without feeling forced or stuffy.  Once they had settled on Rancho Las Lomas, a gorgeous private estate and zoological preserve, as the venue for their wedding, they embraced a vintage-inspired vision with Spanish flair.  Kristin found some gorgeous tiles that were white, canary yellow and deepest blue-black, and used them as a jumping-off point for the inspiration for the rest of the day.  Her background in graphic design was put to good use in creating gorgeous stationery that mimicked the look and feel of the tiles, which were eventually turned into coasters and given as guest favors.  Every printed piece had a special treatment, from hand-stitched borders and colorful eyelets to charming lace-edged fabric pockets for the programs.

I was able to collaborate on this wedding with my best friend and floral visionary, Kristin Brancaleone of The Treasured Petal, which was a definite treat.  We capitalized on our natural synergy to amplify and bring to life the wonderful ideas Kristin (the bride) had in mind.  Kris (the florist) brought in mismatched Spanish style recycled glass vases filled with a playful mix of florals for the centerpieces.  An abundance of fluffy hydrangea, ruffled tulips, ranunculus, dahlias, and anenomes (the bride’s favorite) were mixed in with berries and soft dusty miller to give the arrangements a natural, “just gathered” look.  The result was romantic and voluminous, with a textural wildness to it.  The ceremony arch she created — a rustic and untamed garland composed of curly willow and bursts of white and yellow blooms — made a striking focal point as Kristin and Mike exchange vows.

As guests arrived on-site for the event, they were greeted by an oversized wrought iron birdcage to which they could attach little notes and wishes for the bride and groom.  Kris had adorned this showstopping piece with an abundant array of florals in lieu of an entry arrangement — it was both functional as a guestbook and eye-catching as a structural piece of décor.  The escort card table was a labor of love by Michael the groom.  He built a tiered wooden display for the tented cards, which we draped with vintage doilies and sprinkled with an assortment of vintage buttons the bride had collected in shades of white, gold and yellow.  Kris added an eclectic grouping of various vintage bottles with single blooms for a simple, homespun look.
