Thanks to my orange shoes, a beautiful love story, the support family and friends, and a whole lot of luck, we were the 2011 grand prize winners of the Crate & Barrel Ultimate Wedding Contest. The contest enabled us to have our dream wedding in New Orleans, Louisiana. In mid-2011, we relocated to Beijing, China and our guest list spanned 41 states and seven countries. We wanted to give our guests a destination wedding in America that had a unique local flavor, worthy of at least a weekend visit. There is no better place to host a celebration than the French Quarter in the Big Easy, and our wedding mantra was “laissez bon temps rouler” (let the good times roll). Julie Gibson, founder of Studio Grace, designed our save the date and passport like-invitations that reflected both NOLA and our ever-traveling careers.

Romantic, old New Orleans was brought to life thanks to Yifat Oren & Associates, our wedding planner, courtesy of Crate & Barrel. Stefanie Cove, Managing Partner, was with us every step of the way to choose the best local vendors (neither Michael or I are from NOLA) that would bring the vision of Southern charm, cajun comfort, and French elegance to life. Laura Kleinhenz of Docuvitae, our photographers, captured each moment in their authentic photojournalist style. They produced images that were more than just photographs – they were art! Welliver productions shot our wedding video and stayed with us throughout the entire evening.

The day began at the Aveda Paris Parker Salon where the bridesmaids, mothers of the bride and groom, and me had our hair and makeup done. The stylists and artists treated us like old friends, did beautiful work, and gave us a relaxing morning. We returned to our hotel to change; the bridesmaids wore long, ivory Two Birds Convertible Dresses (purchased from Bella Bridesmaid DC), which gave them fifteen different ways to wear their dress. The thick, high-quality jersey fabric was comfortable to wear all day and photographed beautifully. I wore two dresses: for the ceremony, a Pronovias lace gown and for the dinner and at the reception a silk with tulle overlay gown by Vera Wang. I purchased the Vera Wang dress from the most lovely Bridal Boutique I had ever been to: Mimi NOLA. Gail and Mimi, two of NOLA’s finest ladies assisted me and theirs is the only VW bridal boutique in New Orleans. They gave us the most personal attention, service, and advice for hosting a spectacular local wedding. They are the place to go bridal shopping if in New Orleans, hands down. As a nod to how we met, I wore orange pumps and my bridesmaids and flower girl did too. The groomsmen changed into a Calvin Klein classic tuxedo from Men’s Wearhouse and my handsome groom wore his own tuxedo by J.Crew. To give the groom distinction, we had him be the only one in a white bow tie and the rest of his men in black.

We wanted to maximize time with our guests, so we decided to take pictures before the ceremony at one of the most iconic parks in New Orleans, Jackson Square. It sits before St. Louis Cathedral, which provided a stunning backdrop for the portraits. Next, we asked our guests to meet at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, which tucked in the 140 friends and family for an intimate and cozy view of our ceremony. Pastor Stephen Aguillard gave what my Grandfather called, “the best wedding ceremony I’ve ever seen” as he preached about men’s and women’s needs in marriage. We wrote our own vows; Michael read his from a neatly folded piece of paper, me from my iPhone, which caused a few chuckles. It added to the interesting quirk of our young Pastor reading from his iPad, too. Our florals for the ceremony were by Ambiance Flowers and added to our mostly white with a few pops of orange in our bouquets. Harry Hardin’s string trio played Air on the G String for the family procession, Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley for the bridal party procession, and then my father and I entered with Mascagni’s Intermezzo. After a tearful vow exchange, we recessed to the traditional Mendelssohn’s Wedding March.

Joyfully marching out of the church as husband and wife, we were greeted by the brass instruments of the Storyville Stompers, one of the most decorated second line bands in New Orleans. Orange handkerchiefs and white feather boas were handed out to the guests and to their surprise, we began marching down the French Quarter. Michael and I briefly followed the parade in a horse and carriage, but we soon joined the crowd, not ones to miss out on any fun. Locals took pictures from their balconies and some even threw beads! We marched and danced with the brass band about eight blocks to the reception site, Galvez Restaurant, located in the French Quarter on the bank of the Mississippi river.

As the sun was setting, the second line band played for our cocktail hour outdoors in the Dutch Alley next the French Market. White lights streamed the alley, and specialty New-Orleans-inspired drinks and delicious Spanish-Cajun hors d’oeuvres were passed around. When it was time, guests were invited to walk up the votive lined stair case, up to the dining hall where five long king’s tables were set. I remember hearing my mother gasp, “Wow!” Each of the tables had no fewer than 100 candles illuminating the room; some in candelabras, some in candlesticks, and small votives. The room needed no other lighting, and the hundreds of candles were my favorite signature touch. The tables also were decorated by Ambiance Flowers vases with white flowers and baby’s breath. Each place setting contained a hand-written note to each guest, from either Michael or me, thanking them for coming.

Dinner was led by Chef Laura, of Galvez. Even though our event was black tie, we served our five courses family style to make for a more personal meal. Our guests passed around their incredible spanish, american, and french inspired dishes: ensaladas, crab cakes, grilled rack of lamb, paella valenciana, and shrimp and grits. It was cooked to perfection, thank you Chef! Our toasts broke up the courses, and our best man and maid of honor gave memorable and touching speeches. My father went last, and after his invited the guests to the dance floor, in the neighboring room.

The dance floor at Galvez is surrounded by French windows and doors that lead to a wrap around balcony. It’s one of the most romantic views in New Orleans, and our guests could watch steamboats chugging along the river as they sipped cocktails on the Crate and Barrel designed lounges outdoors. Or, inside they could get footloose with us to the incredibly talented, seven piece band, Taboo. They were a show stopper and played everything we asked, plus the favorites that even kept my Grandparents dancing way past their usual bed time.

We served two cakes: our wedding cake was by a local favorite sweet shop: Sucré, and they did a buttercream, three tiered wedding cake and our Groom’s cake (we’re in the South, after all!) was by Courtney Schmidig, a family friend and pastry chef at the French Laundry. I insisted on taste before appearance, so there was no fondant, only delicious butter cream and natural ingredients, they both were outstanding, but Courtney’s took the cake to another level!

We danced until midnight with Taboo and their incredible band arrangement and ended the night with a stellar performance that had most guests ready to continue their evening onto Bourbon street. In the morning, we relived the night over beignets and chicory coffee at Cafe Du Monde and bid a final farewell to our guests. We’re still hearing stories about how amazing strolling down the French Quarter with a second line band was, and the awesome jazz ensemble during cocktail hour, and the candlelit views of the Mississippi at night. Thank you Crate & Barrel, and thank you New Orleans, you gave us all an event to remember.

Brock and Bethlene, both being creative artists, wanted something eye catching and classy with a modern flare. Even though the wedding was going to be in Pennsylvania, an Old Hollywood like flare seemed appropriate given that they live in Southern California. The bride and groom knew from the beginning that they wanted a black and white wedding, which really started their brainstorming process to create an elegant theme for their wedding. A damask print was chosen to elegantly marry the black and white theme. This print was used for favors, table runners, program design and many other features to help tie the entire Old Hollywood theme together. They chose an accent color of yellow to add some vibrancy into the ceremony and reception and to emulate their cheerful and positive outlook on life. With the wedding being at the end of summer, yellow hit the spot.

Their inspiration for their wedding was largely driven by things that were important to the couple as our relationship formed in California. The most important element for inspiration was their family of Serta sheep. Since the sheep were part of the proposal; they absolutely had to be part of the wedding. “Sweet Sheepy Dreams” was the theme behind this elegant Old Hollywood-esque wedding. The save-the-dates, ceremony programs, groomsmen’s cufflinks, and later thank you cards, were all designed by Brock and included many sheep influences.

The Old Hollywood elegance was also incorporated into the flowers designed by Marie Huss of Flowers Sculpture by using bold yellow mums, roses, cymbidium orchids, and calla lilies accented with black feathers and sparkling strands of crystal.

Bethlene’s father officiated the ceremony. This meant that in addition to giving away his daughter to Brock, he would also have to marry them. As Bethlene’s father escorted Bethlene down the aisle, Brock and Bethlene could only describe that first sight moment as “breathtaking.” It took so much self-control for both of them to refrain from kissing each other as soon as they were standing together at the end of the aisle.

Another important element was the inclusion of butterflies, as one of Brock and Bethlene’s first dates was at a butterfly exhibit. Again, butterflies were featured in some of Brock’s designs, and Persnickety Ladies suggested butterfly tags to be placed on each guest’s pillow favor. In addition, and most cleverly, Persnickety Ladies found edible butterfly wafers that were attached, using corn syrup, to every guest’s champagne flute. Bethlene wore rhinestone-butterflies on her shoes and carried a butterfly brooch in her bouquet.

After tying the knot, their memories consisted of a lot of chatting with dear friends and family, a magical kiss along the illuminated driveway, dancing the night away and just continuing to fall more in love with each other.

Jared and I were college sweethearts and met while attending James Madison University. I was a senior and he was a junior. I had classes with his college roommate and finally towards the end of the semester I agreed to meet them out with friends since his roommate kept mentioning how we would be a perfect fit. From then on we dated through my last year of college, his last year of college (I worked in DC during that time) and finally after the summer of his graduation I moved to Fairfield, CT to pursue my Master’s and be closer to Jared.

Jared grew up in Southport, CT and since the early days of our relationship he would take me to Southport Center to pick up sandwiches at Spic N’ Span. From there we would relax by the Harbor and enjoy the gorgeous views and nice weather. One mild day in November, Jared took me to pick up lunch and head to the harbor. At first I was hesitant to get out of the car (mild in November in Connecticut is 50 degrees!) and eat but he insisted. We sat at our favorite bench and after we finished lunch he told me how much this place meant to him and me and how the harbor has seen our relationship grow since we were college sweethearts. He then told me there would be no better spot to take his family later on in life and tell them this is where he asked his wife to marry him. And with that he got on his knee, opened the little black box and popped the question! From there he had champagne and roses hiding behind the tree and we went from there to celebrate with friends and family.

We chose the Lord Thompson Manor as our wedding spot and frankly it was the best decision we could have made. Jared and I were looking for a classic English Garden elegance with a bit of Southern charm sprinkled in between. The staff was incredible and always knew what we needed – frankly before we even did.

Searching for a dress was no easy task. I visited several salons in New York and finally fell in love with a gorgeous, all lace Monique Lhuillier gown. I added a sash and a brooch to the gown and my something borrowed and something blue was my late grandmother’s blue lapis dinner ring which I wore the entire night.

Walking down the aisle with my father to a string version of Here Comes the Sun after worrying about the weather the entire weekend was amazing. Finally around a half hour before the ceremony the sun was blazing and it was gorgeous out! Jared and I wrote our own vows and exchanging them for the first time with each other was a such surreal, intimate moment. Our reverend told the story of “Paige & Jared”: How we met and how from this moment forward we come together as one and as a newly formed family. At the end of the ceremony our reverend in unison with all of our guests announced us as husband and wife which was a powerful moment for us.

Another moment in time which was very important was having time to ourselves during the cocktail hour. The venue was great to prepare a cozy, romantic table under the trees to relax and share some of our yummy appetizers. It was a great moment to relax and “take it all in.”

It was a perfect location for a gorgeous Connecticut midsummer wedding and we could not have asked for more!

From the Bride…Branden and I met in Brooklyn, fell in love in Brooklyn, and make our home in Brooklyn, so it was a natural decision to invite our friends and family to celebrate our marriage with us in our beloved borough. In fact, we wanted it to feel as if Brooklyn was a guest at our wedding. We took care to spend as much of our wedding budget on products and vendors from Brooklyn, and to infuse a sense of our neighborhood into our wedding.

After attending a friend’s wedding at Bubby’s in DUMBO a few years prior and admiring it’s comfortable atmosphere, incredible views of Manhattan, ample space, and amazing food, Branden and I knew that Bubby’s would be a part of our wedding too. We chose the Brooklyn Historical Society for our ceremony and were married in the gorgeous library on the second floor—the perfect setting given my career in book publishing.

When we started envisioning our wedding in these unique Brooklyn settings, we saw a wedding where we were surrounded by books and the Brooklyn Bridge stood as a nearby witness; a reception where our guests feasted on fried chicken and pie, danced and drank all night, and left us photobooth strips full of smiles in our guestbook; an event where fluffy flowers and colorful bunting combined with a relaxed atmosphere and unexpected personal touches to form an elegantly eclectic feel. I am so lucky to have incredibly crafty and talented family: my mom sewed the bunting that served as a dominant decorative theme; and my sister designed and created the table number flags, menus, programs, and place-settings. The three of us had so much fun planning these details and I was so happy to be able to incorporate their creativity into our wedding.

My favorite part of our wedding was our ceremony, which we crafted together with our officiant, Joanna Fernandes, to highlight our commitment to our partnership and to declare our love for each other. With the light of our friends’ and families’ love shining on us that day, our wedding will always be a bright spot in our memories.

After Andy proposed in the night snow outside of Joan of Arc Chapel at Marquette University (where we were both students at the time), we really waffled on what our collective vision was for our wedding.  And since I was starting medical school in the fall, we wanted to get the planning underway and as close to finished as possible before then.  We have a strong attachment to Milwaukee, both being from the area and attending Marquette so we knew we wanted to get married in the city.  We also wanted to be able to have the ceremony and reception in the same place.  We settled on Lake Park Bistro, one of Milwaukee’s finest restaurants since we are both total foodies and the staircase was the most dramatic and beautiful location we could find for an outdoor ceremony.  The idea for a day wedding certainly was not mine (I’m more of a night-owl); however, Andy convinced me that having a day wedding with a lunch reception would leave time for us to spend time later in the evening with our friends who were coming into town for the event.

The most important thing for me after the location and the food was photography.  We wanted someone who would capture the day in story form without being unnatural and posed.  The flowers were also really important to me, as my mom has always been into gardening.  Carrie at Petals put up with all of my crazy visions and times I changed my mind and put together the most beautiful rosy creations!  Andy was more concerned with the cake and Karen from The Cake Lady did not disappoint with a lavender-flavored cake filled with vanilla buttercream, raspberry preserves, and lemon curd.  It was to die for!  And the lawn bowling – Andy saw the lawn bowling pitch and simply asked Lindsay, the catering director for Lake Park Bistro, on a whim if we could have lawn bowling instead of dancing.  When she said yes, he really ran with the idea and contacted the Milwaukee Lawn Bowls Club – they even offered to come out and teach our guests how to play!!  Let me tell you – it was pretty fantastic to see the people we love the most dressed up, in the midst of a rousing match of lawn bowling, all in celebration of the love that Andy and I share.

Our wedding day was everything we could have dreamed of and more.  We never could have predicted receiving a watermelon as part of the toast that the maid of honor, Megan, gave in reference to our first “date” – walking around downtown Milwaukee freshman year of college with a watermelon from the Milwaukee Public Market.  We never could have predicted the dog that greeted Laura during the wedding party photos with some adorable muddy pawprint accents for her dress.  We never could have predicted the minister announcing the wrong last name at the end of the ceremony and the hilarity that would ensue when Andy’s mom corrected him loudly from the front row.  And I think I will forever tease my dad for being the one to nearly fall down the stairs as he walked me down the aisle after he had made such a big deal about me being the clumsy one in the weeks leading up to the big day.  My point is, even with all of the planning and details we worked so hard on, the real things I will never forget are the unique moments that our friends and family brought to the day and the love that they shared with us.

Michelle and Sean did such an amazing job both planning and organizing this wedding. In addition to all the hard work that Michelle put into her DIY details that were nothing short of amazing, they also hired the best vendors and their wedding was absolute perfection.

Michelle’s inspiration for their wedding began with a simple white vase that was in the shape of a bird. When she was unable to find what she was looking for, she hit the antique stores and purchased individual milk glass vases, which Martha Andrews of Blooms used to fill with the most fabulous floral centerpieces. Everything had to have the same vintage, elegant feel so Michelle designed everything with that in mind including picking the Citizen Hotel as the venue because it had the perfect combination of vintage and elegance. With the exception of floral and cake, her details were all DIY. The invitations, the escort cards, the table numbers, the cocktail menus that were on the bar, the tags on the candy jars, the paper bags for everyone to fill up with candy, and the table seating chart that was just outside the reception room.  All of the supplies came from the Paper Garden off of Fulton in Sacramento.

The room looked incredible and it was a fabulous wedding!

From Shawn, the groom, on his proposal…

I had her best friend Melissa fake an emergency to get her out of the office on Friday around 11am (I had also let her boss know so she would be able to leave).  The plan was for them to get an early lunch at a nearby restaurant, but Melissa called at the last minute and said she was so upset she couldn’t handle being in a public restaurant and that Kristen needed to meet her upstairs at the outdoor rooftop lounge.  I had the whole rooftop blocked off and was waiting for her to arrive.  She arrived on the roof at around 11:20am where she found me waiting for her. I walked her over to the corner of the rooftop with a view North (Empire State Building etc) where I had a table set up with champagne, chocolate covered strawberries and the ring there for the proposal.  She said yes and then I surprised her with a trip to Turks and Caicos for the weekend.

From the bride, Kristen…

We selected Wolffer Estate because we love the Hamptons especially in the summer, we wanted to get married outdoors and it’s so beautiful there with all the lush greenery and gorgeous white hydrangeas. I’m from New Orleans and Shawn is from Boulder so we thought it was a good compromise location that would embrace both of our personalities and tastes.

We loved our ukulele player Josh Cho who played and sang Somewhere Over The Rainbow / What A Wonderful World while I walked down the aisle. He also played Jack Johnson’s Better Together for the bridesmaids to walk to.

Our gift bags that we worked so hard on were natural cotton totes that were reusable and earth friendly. The totes had a map of the Hamptons on the front and were filled with local snacks like Tate’s cookies, North Fork Potato Chips and Wolffer Estate Wine. We personalized everyone’s dinner menu with their name on it as a nice touch.
