Sometimes, we get to share our Little Black Book members’ own weddings, but today … LBB photographer Andrea Polito is one of the lovely maids in the wedding! Her friends Alexis and Andy were married on one of those golden October days (2008) in a gorgeous fall wedding in Dallas!

Here’s what Alexis had to tell us about her wedding…

Our floral designers from Fete des Fleurs in Dallas created the most romantic arch for the ceremony with leaves and flowers in rust, cream, and green. Our wedding was in October and we wanted something with a great fall feel, even though Dallas is still pretty green in October. The venue, Marie Gabrielle, created the perfect backdrop with its beautiful trees and gardens, and the flowers (orchids, moss, ranunculus) and small accents (Jan Barboglio iron candelabras, centerpieces, and chargers; candles everywhere, including hanging from the trees; white lights; matchbooks from For Your Party; caramel apple favors from Tart Bakery with hand-calligraphy on letterpress cards by Bella Figura; the flowy green bridesmaids dresses by Vera Wang; the sparkler send-off; our vintage Cadillac getaway car) just tied everything together.

My amazing photographer, Andrea Polito, is a close friend and did double duty at the wedding by also serving as one of my bridesmaids! She was also pregnant and in heels, but was determined to capture all of the details…which she did! She was amazing to watch and during the ceremony had two staff photographers shooting while she stood by my side! It was really great to work with a friend who also happens to be one of the best in the business! She took time to shoot all the little things that often get overlooked, and those details have been the most fun looking back on.

I wore a gown by Lela Rose, a Texan-born designer who I love. She uses unconventional fabrics in her wedding dresses, and I loved the embroidered lace detail all over the dress. I wanted something with a vintage feel that was also comfortable and timeless, and it was perfect.  I also wore a vintage diamond watch that belonged to my great grandmother and carried my grandma’s handkerchief. I found my clutch on Etsy and pinned a brooch on it that matched the ones in my hair. Even though you really couldn’t see my shoes under my dress, I felt so great peeking down at them and seeing those feathers…They are still on display in my closet!

When asked what the most important thing about their wedding was?

Probably the ceremony and vows…We wanted a very personal ceremony, so we pulled from lots of different vows, poems, and traditions to create a custom ceremony that felt like us. We come from different faith backgrounds, so we blended passages that spoke to both of us. My cousin is a judge in Dallas and one of the only people I know who actually towers over my husband, so he officiated. We recognized our grandparents who were no longer with us and had a moment of silence in honor of them. I was very close with my grandmother, in particular, and carried an embroidered handkerchief that belonged to her with her initials. My husband’s brother and best man read a unique version of “these are the hands” during the ceremony, and it was really special to have members from both sides of our family participate in the wedding.

AK Event Design was there for day-of coordination …

Andy and I both love music and knew from the beginning that we wanted a band…He said he knew it was meant to be when I professed my love for Tom Waits the first night we met. We’re both big fans of 70s and 80s rock (Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Led Zeppelin), and I’ve always loved Bowie, The Cars, Talking Heads, etc. We listened to a ton of wedding bands online and then came across Skyrocket, a band out of Austin. They were voted Best Cover Band in Austin by the The Austin Chronicle, and we knew we’d found our band! Their setlist had everything from Hot Legs and Rock the Casbah to Brown Sugar and Whole Lotta Love…We were sold! All of the musicians in the band are also recording artists in their own right, including Trish Murphy who fronts the group, so we knew we were getting the best of both worlds…Really talented and really fun! It was a great pick, because everyone from our generation to the older generation was on the dance floor getting down! My husband even did an “unplugged” guitar solo with the band during American Girl that was the highlight of my night!

Alice and Taylor loved the wine from this vineyard and thought it would be a wonderful place to have a wedding.  They tried to keep the colors similar to the colors in the vineyard with deep purples and greens.

They really wanted the feel and look of their wedding to look like a family backyard party….simple elegance but very comfortable and “homey.”

I’d say they did a phenomenal job pulling off their wedding vision!

Now, about their awesome wedding day attire… To honor the bride’s late father, the groom wore the suit Holley’s dad wore at her parent’s wedding in 1979. I mean come-on, how completely adorable is that?!?! Yep, the groom can rock that “something old” too. Holley chose a handmade dress from Etsy, built with a recycled corset and slip. I was already a HUGE fan of Etsy, but I think they just got a few more points in my book… this dress is utterly delightful!

From the bride…

Our number one goal for the wedding and reception was for all of our friends and family to come together in the ultimate party. That’s why we tried to set up different areas for people to have fun in: dance floor, digital photobooth, dessert display with photos taken by Jason’s sister, and one of my favorite projects, a line of Polaroids of Jason and me throughout the years, strung up with mini clothespins. The theme and colors were pretty loose, but roughly we wanted to create an English garden feel for the wedding and reception: that’s how we chose pale pink and cream garden roses, antique hydrangea, and pale gray and green accents. I had so much fun ordering mismatched teacups off of Ebay for guests to drink out of–they were a big hit! We also created homemade, edible favors for our guests: boxes of chocolate truffles, inked with pale florals and test tubes filled with all natural, locally made honey.

We tried to keep our wedding as sustainable as possible. One of the many reasons we chose our venue, Barr Mansion, is because it is the only certified organic wedding venue in the United States. All of the delicious food was organic. Barr Mansion recycles everything that can possibly be recycled, and they try to use local flowers and foods whenever possible. We made sure the favors were edible and not things that guests would just throw away. Having the ceremony and reception at the same site helped save gas, too. Instead of renting a vintage Mustang (which I totally would’ve done), we borrowed my mom’s Prius to use as our getaway car.

This wedding is so simple, so lovely and still FULL of personality. The rustic little details, the pine, the favors, the mason jars, add such charm to the day. I really can’t get enough. And, let’s not forget those teacups… absolutely perfect. A huge thank you to The Nichols for sharing this beautiful wedding with us! Congratulations to Holley and Jason!

Holley and Jason wanted to do their best to plan a green wedding, so Barr Mansion in Austin, Texas fit perfectly into their vision. Barr Mansion is the only certified organic wedding venue in the U.S. and it’s vintage, rustic charm was the perfect setting for their English Garden-styled wedding.

From the bride, Holley…

After a seemingly endless drought in Austin, the skies opened up on our wedding weekend, turning what was supposed to be a garden ceremony into a barn wedding. We went with the flow, and everyone said the rain trickling down the large wall of windows really added to the atmosphere.

I couldn’t agree more. The rain even makes the whole scene feel more English and charming… plus, it doesn’t hurt that the bride and groom are COMPLETELY adorable.

Last tidbits from the bride…

Other elements that helped personalize the day: a bright yellow family quilt suspended as a photo backdrop; table seating cards hung inside a frame made from wood salvaged from my great-grandparents’ Texas homestead; and perhaps the best toast ever by the groom’s siblings, a tag-team comedy act that should be going on the road any day now.

The wedding was a hit, thanks to our family, our friends; Suzi Q, who helped put us at ease; and especially my parents, who footed the bill for an affair that was probably a smidge less traditional than they would have designed, but, I hope, one of the happiest days of all of our lives.

From the bride…

For me, sourcing local food, drinks, and flowers was non-negotiable. As insatiable pie lovers, we opted to skip cake in favor of three kinds of pie: pecan, margarita tart, and apple-cream—a family recipe that our excellent caterer, My Own Chef, learned to make just for us. The menu was Tex-Mex all the way: tamales and corn fritters; grilled sirloin and chicken fajitas; jicama, orange, and lime-chili salad; and more guacamole than even our hungry crowd of 100 could polish off. To wash it down: two Texas beers, Shiner Bock and Real Ale’s Rio Blanco Pale Ale and our two favorite Texas wines Becker’s Claret and Viognier.

And then there were the flowers. Such flowers! I was dead set on tracking down a local wildflower grower, and I found the absolute best: Texas Specialty Cut Flowers, a family-run farm outside of Wimberley, Texas, that supplies the likes of Whole Foods. From them, we got the most brilliant, vibrant anemones, Icelandic poppies, and every last yellow ranunculus. The flowers were so gorgeous that elaborate arrangements would have only detracted from their natural beauty, but we did have a local florist fashion three oversized wreaths to hang as backdrops for the ceremony.

I love the use of quilts in the wedding decor. Draped over hay bales, cocktail tables, as a backdrop for photographs…it’s so adorable and such a lovely way to thread your family into every element. Plus, they are gorgeous quilts!

More tidbits from the bride…

I bought tons of different embroidered napkins where every guest had a different one  and then I hand stamped all of their names on a manila tag that I attached with ribbon. We used kraft paper runners to save money. My dad made this huge chalkboard where we wrote the guests names and placed them on the tables(which were images of Texas, cowboys, etc). Everything was done with mason jars, from the flowers to our signature cocktails (which were grapefruit basil margaritas).

Definitely a steal worthy idea!

So cute, right! The affair actually seems like it was styled for a shoot, rather than for a real wedding. Every detail is just so thoughtful, so cohesive, so appropriate for the overall look and style. Love that!

More from the bride…

Dinner was on long tables and served family style with steak sandwiches, mac & cheese and other comfort. The ‘cake’ was actually a ton of mini cupcakes all in different flavors. Music means a lot to us.  My husband surprised me with a serenade – he got up and sang and played his guitar to the Townes Van Zandt song, ‘If I Needed You.’  We had so much music as we really wanted a ‘hootenanny’.  We had a guitarist who wrote original songs for us as we walked down the aisle.  A french horn, an amazing band that plays at a country venue in Austin called the Broken Spoke & a DJ.

Absolutely scrumptious! It’s Texas meets Martha Stewart…basically the kind of girl I’ve always wanted to be.  The cowboy hats and boots next to the frilly pink flowers. The sweet next to the down home style. LOVE. EVERY. BIT.

We asked Amy to tell us what she loved the most about her wedding  …

I loved how our monogram was positioned on the back of our Phillipe Stark ghost chairs at the reception (see image below). I also loved how the T and M were hung on the big wooden church doors- cleverly created out of hot pink peonies. The M was later taken off the door and attached to the back of the Rolls Royce that we were riding in!

The escort cards were hung from a stunning silver tree that glistened with dangling crystals. Later shelves were positioned around the tree that contained rows of gift boxes with porcelain red bird limoge boxes sitting on top. Being from St. Louis and a fan of the Cardinals I had to somehow bring my hometown flair into my reception. I really wanted each guest to leave with something tangible that they could smile at and remember the evening.

The whole weekend was themed- “I DO in Dallas!” – Mary Wright Shaw even had stickers on the buses that we rented that had the logo on them. People were spotting them all over town. It was hysterical! My mom and Mary surprised me with the decal on the wall in the suite I got ready in.

I pinned my best friend and maid of honor, Erin’s grandmother’s brooch into my flower arrangement as my something borrowed. My something old was a beautiful handkerchief that was my Grandmothers. The neat thing was that Erin was married 3 months after me and she borrowed my grandmother’s handkerchief.

We had a cigar bar outside on the patio with hand rolled cigars that was a huge hit. My Dad is a real cigar lover. I just had to do it for him! He finally had one after Patrick I drove off to end his night!

Their magnificent celebration was at the Dallas Ritz-Carlton.

From Mary … The look for the reception portrayed contemporary elegance that highlighted the couple’s colorful and warm personalities. The room was adorned with crystal and mirror accents that reflected a feel of old Hollywood glamour. Flowers included grape hydrangeas, David Austin Roses, pink French tulips and over 3,000 Sandra Bernhart Peonies.

Ashley and her husband, Christian, had such a gorgeous wedding in Houston this past November and put so much love and thought into every last detail that I just had to share. The bride worked with Monogram Inc. in NYC to design a gorgeous monogram that they used throughout their wedding including on the letterpress invitations we designed and printed. Their ceremony was held at the First Presbyterian Church in Houston with the reception following at The Junior League of Houston.

Ashley wore a beautiful French lace dress by Amsale, purchased at Louise Blum Bridal Salon, a gorgeous little bolero and the prettiest Kate Spade shoes, while Christian wore his own classic black tuxedo. {ps…Abby got her gown at Louise Blum’s as well … Melody became our new best friend!}

After watching an Oscar de la Renta fashion show last fall, Ashley designed her bridesmaids’ dresses based on a dress she fell in love with, working with Arlene Gamble in Houston to make her vision a reality. The beautiful rich deep purple of the bridesmaid dresses was carried throughout the event, paired with gorgeous reds and greens to create a really festive feel as a way to kick off the holiday season. 

All of the lovely photos are credited to their photographer, Tanja Lippert Photography {Little Black Book Photographer} out of San Jose, CA and I just love how blissfully happy they both look in all of their photos. It has been such a pleasure for me to flip through all of their images!

Ashley and Christian wanted to create a really warm and inviting atmosphere, combining old world elegance with modern sophistication. No stone went unturned, from coordinated paper products with a custom wedding monogram to unique wedding favors, the bride and groom paid special attention to every small detail.

Rich colored flowers and seasonal red berries filled the room, guests sipped champagne and lined up at the potato martini bar.

Guests danced the night away to the tunes from the Grady Gaines Band. Favors were fabulous chili mix packets.

Everyone enjoyed both a delicious chocolate peanut butter groom’s cake and a white almond wedding cake.

The cakes were made by Little Black Book Vendor Susie’s Cakes & Confections … both of Abby’s sisters’ wedding cakes were created by Susie! You should SEE the incredibly beautiful cake gallery on her website. And to say her flavors are fantastic is a massive understatement!

Ashley and Christian departed under a spray of sparklers!

Carlie and the fantastic ladies at Caplan Miller Events planned a festive celebration that was inspired by a millinery theme. Many of the ladies checked their custom-made hats,ordered from London, at the door. Such fun!

A tented affair in the heart of the Texas Hill Country ~at the Hoffman Haus~  just gorgeous! I do believe that shabby chic had it’s origin in Fredericksburg, Texas.

Dinner and dancing lasted late into the night…

The next day, a brunch send-off from the local airport was, once again, in classic Texas-style via a prop-engine plane … leaving their guests shaking their heads saying, “That is SO Carlie & Tom!”

Tom was in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Hood. Carlie was finishing up her Civil Engineering Master’s degree. And as so often happens, their future together was put on hold several times in the next few years. After a year long tour in Iraq, Tom returned and they TRULY celebrated their reunion.

On Saturday, March 28, they were married at a Texas Hill Country vineyard, Grape Creek Vineyard in Fredericksburg. Carlie wore camo Manolo’s in honor of her groom and was led down the aisle by a bagpiper. The ceremony was held under huge oak trees and florist David Kurio Floral Designs surrounded the round platform with blue hydrangeas.

When their wedding had to be postponed (until Tom’s return from Iraq), Carlie had a full year to plan with the oh-so talented ladies at Caplan-Miller Events! She decided to let her family ties to London be her inspiration, and planned the event around a fun millinery theme. All the ladies donned custom-made hats!

Fredericksburg is a charming German town 70 miles north of San Antonio. Filled with Texas-primitive antique shops and quaint Bed & Breakfast lodgings, it was a refreshing destination wedding for all their guests!

From Kristin at AK Event Design in Dallas, Texas …

David and Julie were a fun couple to work with. They loved bright colors and wanted their event to be FUN! We incorporated the “Four Seasons” into their save the date, invitation, programs, menu cards etc. For example…on their invitation, the belly band said “A Time to Love…” The menu cards said, “A Time to Celebrate.” One of the fun things ~ David gave all his groomsmen black converse to put on at the reception. We also used Flutter Fetti at the end of the night during the last dance. It made a great picture and the guests had so much fun!!

Julie and David were married in August at the Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, Texas. The reception followed at The Four Seasons Resort & Club in Dallas.

“To everything there is a season…

David and I met at college when we both applied for a co-director position to lead a service organization at Baylor University our respective freshman and sophomore years. David was a long haired, eccentric freshman who knew no strangers, and I was a clean cut, reserved sophomore who was not the least bit interested in “his type.” But, as fate would have it we were selected to co-lead this service organization and through our service became the best of friends and eventually more. Guess opposites really do attract!! At our end of the year banquet, David presented me with a charm that symbolized the four seasons. It was round and was divided into four sections, each with a cut out to symbolize a particular season. A flower. A snowflake. A tree. A sun. He gave me this charm because he felt like it was the perefect representation of the seasons we’d been through together as leaders that past year.

David and I, gluttons for committees, served the following year on a focus group that helped to design a new community center on Baylor’s campus. And what was our inspiration? None other than the four seasons charm. Everything from the light fixutres to the builidng’s name, Seasons Cafe, was centered around that charm. Three years later, it was the eve of my law school graduation and David surprised me with an elaborate proposal that included a walk down memory lane on Baylor’s campus and ended with him on his knee in the middle of the transformed community center, Seasons Cafe, that we’d helped design so long ago.

Thus began yet another season of our life together! When we’d narrowed our potential reception sights down to a handful…the Four Seasons was a no-brainer winner!”

Julie and David’s classically beautiful wedding was followed by an equally stunning reception at The Four Seasons Resort and as noted by Kristin, followed through with the “four seasons” inspiration … 

The special lighting effects are just mesmerizing!

The groom, Craig, is a musician, evident by the amazing Bluegrass band which performed at the reception and had everyone up on their feet, dancing and having a great time.  Dinner tables were decorated with wildflowers in glass cola bottles and a packet of seeds guests could take home and plant in the garden.  In one of the bridal party photos, everyone is holding a glass bottle full of homebrew made by the groom’s family especially for the wedding.  In place of a bride or groom’s cake, guests enjoyed delicate pink and cream cupcakes.
