“The Big Kahuna” & “Delic” & Braedon – Wedding Highlights with Super 8mm from Life Stage Films

I’m from South Carolina originally and the low-country has a special place in my heart. There’s no other place quite like it – from the smell of the pluff mud to the egrets flying overhead to the Spanish moss blowing in the wind. When Andy and I got engaged we had to decide where to get married – and we had some great options. His family is a Partner in Lambert Bridge Winery in Northern Sonoma – so we could have had a wine country wedding or we could have chosen Atlanta where I was currently living. But after much debate we decided we wanted to share Fripp Island, South Carolina with all our friends and family.

It turned out better than we could have ever imagined. Our goal was to surround ourselves with all the people we loved and create memories that would last a life time. The time was filled with magical sunsets, dolphins, seashell hunting, low-country boils, oysters and bbq, cruising around on golf carts and bikes, cocktails …. all cumulatting with a sunset wedding overlooking the marsh. The sun broke through the clouds as we said our vows and then we all moved on to the reception at the Beach Club where the entire crew danced the night away to the sounds of GrooveTown!

It was a week we’ll never forget – made all the more special by the people that were standing by our sides. My Aunt and Uncle that live on Fripp surprised us with a guest appearance by author Pat Conroy at our rehearsal dinner . I’m still in shock… I cherish his books and go to them when I’m missing that special part of the world. Here’s the toast he presented us with:

“I would like to propose a toast to the bride, Paige Price and her very carefully selected groom, Andy Wilcox. I first came to Fripp Island in the summer of 1961 on a fishing trip with a Marine Colonel as his son. I had no idea by coming to this island before it had a bridge or a single house that I was stepping into my own fate. Five generations of Conroys have walked on this magic island which has always seemed a portion of paradise to me and a Hog Heaven to the Price family. Who could know that Paige Price, a woman who was extremely picky about men, would find her man waiting for her at the Lambert Bridge Winery in the other wing of paradise in Sonoma Valley, California. A love that spent her girl-hood on the beaches of Fripp and finds her bliss working among the grapes and the vines of one of the splendidly beautiful vineyard of Sonoma is a lucky love indeed. What story book ending is better than a southern belle hooking up with a man who spends his life making superb California wines – who could doubt such a vintage. Paige and Andy, tonight you are embarking on a new fate and a new beginning. All of us present tonight are part of your fate. I’m now part of your fate and you are the owners of the first written toast I’ve ever given on Fripp Island. Be happy for the rest of your lives.”

I told Ken he would never be able to surprise me… with anything. I always figure things out! This declaration put his mind to work on a proposal that I will never forget.

As resident physicians at the Medical University of South Carolina, we do not get much time off. And on one average Friday afternoon, I was begrudgingly preparing OR 3 for an add-on emergency case – or so I thought. Ken popped into my room and I grumbled about the day. When I stopped to look at him, I noticed a worried but excited look on his face. His hands were shaking. Both are very unlike my usually calm and serious surgeon!

That’s when Ken grabbed my hands, said the sweetest words, and got down on one knee. As he pulled a blue velvet box from his scrub pocket, my eyes welled with tears. The next thing I knew, I had the most gorgeous ring on my finger. We exited the operating room to hear a hallway full of colleagues cheering and clapping for us. Surprise! There was no add-on case, and so we left the hospital to celebrate the beginning of our beautiful engagement.

Being originally from Alabama, I knew that I needed an expert to navigate the Charleston wedding scene. Katherine Miller Events was just that company. Immediately upon meeting with Katherine I knew that I had found someone super-reliable – with great taste – who I could completely count on to put together the romantic, stylish and Anthropologie-esque wedding celebration that I had in mind. Together, Katherine, Ken and I chose Bethel Methodist Church for the ceremony and the Historic Rice Mill building for our reception venue. Located waterfront on the Ashley River, we knew the spectacular sailboat and sunset views were the perfect backdrop for our Lowcountry wedding.

Having a fabulous photographer was high on my list of priorities, so Katherine introduced me to Charlotte Zacharkiw of Charlotte Elizabeth Photography almost immediately. Her personality jived with my own and her portfolio made me swoon. From our fun and intimate downtown Charleston engagement session to our colorful getaway photos in a classic Charleston Black Cab, Charlotte made every shot unique.

And while Ken and I wanted our unique personalities to show, I also wanted to incorporate one very important tradition: my grandmother’s wedding dress, worn again by my mother and aunt on their wedding days. The team at White on Daniel Island carefully applied the lace from this vintage dress onto my veil, sewing each stitch by hand. It complemented my all-lace gown perfectly! White was the first and only store that I visited as owner Jodi Moylan presented me with “the one” soon after I walked in. To complete my vintage ensemble, Ken purchased a gorgeous antique pearl and rhinestone bracelet from Out of Hand for my wedding gift.

We decided not to see each other before the ceremony, and I’m so glad we did. Instead, I had the pleasure of reading a hand-written note expressing his happiness for the day ahead. Then my bridesmaids surprised me! They coordinated a traditional horse-drawn carriage ride for our transportation to the church. It was such a great touch and special moment to ride through historic downtown Charleston with my favorite girls.

One of my favorite memories of our wedding was the moment I saw my bouquet. Whitney Randall of Branch Design Studio used soft pink and white ranunculus, dusty miller, copper beech leaves, café au lait dahlias, lisianthus, and scabiosa pods to create a masterpiece. Throughout the day, I was absolutely blown away by the beauty and complexity of the arrangements, bouquets, and especially the copper-charmed boutonnieres.

Our flowers were set on ivory, rose and gold colored linens at the Rice Mill. At my request, Katherine incorporated ivory lace in as many places as possible – including the cake table. Our red velvet and cream cheese wedding cake was designed and made by Ken’s close family friend, and needless to say it was devoured promptly after our champagne toast! Pastel-colored French macaroons were also a hit with our guests. I fell in love with The Macaroon Boutique during the engagement and couldn’t wait to set out a variety for my friends and family to try!

I must say that I was most excited to see the whimsical, hand-painted chandeliers Katherine and Whitney made and displayed on the tall oak trees outside the Rice Mill’s entrance. Our multicolored confetti send-off combined with the soft lighting of these chandeliers to create a beautiful final scene. Ken and I were in the clouds over our day, and we still can’t think of one single thing we would have changed! We wanted our guests to leave happy and full of great memories, and I think we achieved just that.

If there is one thing that gets my wedding lovin’ heart a pumpin’ like no other, it’s a sweet, sweet anemone.  Those pretty blooms get me every.single.time… and when I saw them bursting from this glorious Seabrook Island soiree by Valeria Duque Photography, I was INSTANTLY smitten.  Yep, Out of Hand has made every one of my floral dreams come true with those beyond gorgeous bouquets… and combined with the lovely seaside setting and uber-darling duo, it looks like I have a lot of swooning to do!  Click here for more.

From Valeria of Valeria Duque Photography… The bride is Meghan Conbeer and the groom is Adam Dean, they both live in Chicago but decided to get married in South Carolina, in the gorgeous setting of Seabrook Island club, where Meg’s parents live. It is a beautiful place filled with old oak trees covered in Spanish moss, and just by the beach. They got married at 4:00 o clock in the afternoon and afterwards we took a van around the island shooting their bridal party and couple photos. It was a lot of fun, and the sunset was amazing so we had the perfect light for the pictures. Meghan says she knew that she wanted all white flowers, to keep things very clean and modern, but also romantic. The natural setting was so beautiful, that she wanted to pull in some of the colors of the beach/island, so she chose succulents and sea grasses as well.  The black-eyed anemones are actually NAVY which worked perfectly with the scheme as well. The headpiece the bride was wearing was her “something borrowed.” It was worn by her best friend Rachel at her wedding which I also shot in DC last year. The little people next to the cupcakes were the ones actually used by Meg’s grandparents at their wedding, and they just had their 60th wedding anniversary!

From the bride… We had tremendous help from friends and family. A friend of the family was our florist & she did a fantastic job. From the seagrass in the boutonniere to the peach centerpiece she really took our vision of a southern outdoor island wedding and ran with it. My Mom sewed the guy’s bowties. They were a little crooked at times but that suits the groom’s easy-going humor.  My Dad made the cake stands. I’m a graphic designer and designed the invites, programs, signage and favors. We sewed fabric sacks for the grit favors & I printed the front of each. The groom & his best man brewed beer for favors and the guests loved taking a bottle home.

I had my grandmother’s 1940′s dress altered to wear towards the end of the party. It was literally balled up and shoved in a costume drawer for decades. An amazing seamstress removed the wrist-length sleeves and hemmed it to calf length so I could breath in the humid southern weather. She ironed it umpteen times and patched several holes. It was an honor to wear it and I’m amazed it turned out so well!

From the Bride… I love opposites. When jewelry making, I love to mix things that clash and don’t go together to create a big statement. When it comes to decorating my home, I love mixing antiques with modern furniture.  This style was reflected in our wedding.

Picking the venue was easy.  I wanted a historic venue that really showed the old Southern character and charm of Charleston. Lowndes Grove is a gorgeous mansion in downtown Charleston with breathtaking views of the Ashley River. Considering the majority of our guest list was out of town, I thought it was a great place for people to see the beauty of the city.

Decor wasn’t difficult, as well. Because we had a great historic venue, I wanted the decor to be super clean and modern. When you walk into the tent, I wanted it to be completely white with a pops of hot pink flowers.  Something I was very strong about was having minimalistic flower arrangements. Every table arrangement were bunches of the same flowers. There weren’t any arrangements that had mixed flowers in them. I think my favorite flower arrangements were the ones in the lounge area. A simple frost fast with one dahlia flower or one banana leaf  – clean and simple.

Being in the jewelry business, I love fashion. The dress had to be something unique and different. As soon as I saw the Diana dress by Vera Wang, it was love at first sight.  The skirt had a whimsical look to it that fit an outdoor setting. My favorite part of the dress was the belt. I had actually seen other brides in the dress before, but they looked like a completely different dress because no one ever wore the belt! It was the best part of the dress.

The bridesmaids all wore simple Shoshanna champagne colored dresses. I made unique necklaces for each bridesmaid, so they were a little different, but still looked like a collection. I wanted them to look like a runway show walking down the aisle!

My old and borrowed were an antique diamond broach from my grandmother and a pair of unique earrings from Bradley’s grandmother. My grandmother has passed and Bradley’s couldn’t travel for the occasion, so it was extremely important to me to wear something that represented them. With my antique jewelry, engagement ring and band and new modern wedding dress and shoes, i was ready to walk down the aisle.

Our ceremony was very special and romantic. We walked down the aisle to traditional wedding music and then left as a couple to “All You Need is Love” by the Beatles. Our chuppah was very simple. You don’t need much with the amazing backdrop of the river.

Having a seated dinner was really important to me because it made the wedding a lot more intimate. We had a total of 170 people and its safe to say that we love and care about all of them. It was really cool to see my friends and family mixed in with Bradley’s friends and family.

The most important thing throughout the wedding planning process was that the wedding had to represent us as a couple. And I think the whole night from the decor, to the guest list and music, we really hit home. It was truly a special night full of love and happiness.

We had a few visions for our wedding: a venue on the water, modern cocktail style reception, and a boat departure. We were lucky to have over a year to plan the wedding; it was so much fun to be creative and put our own personal spin on everything.

The biggest decision for us was location. Being born and raised in Charleston, I really wanted to showcase its beauty and my favorite aspect, the water. We decided on The Island House, a relatively new but up and coming reception venue on John’s Island. It is a beautiful property on the Stono River with a beautiful low country view. This venue is truly a best kept secret in Charleston. Once the location was booked, everything else started falling into place. We chose our vendors based on personal experiences from family and friends. They were all so wonderful to work with and did such an amazing job bringing our visions to reality.

At first the wedding seemed so far away, but once we got to six months out, time just flew by. I could never have imagined a more perfect day. We decided to have the bridesmaids get ready at my parents’ house and do all of our pictures there before the ceremony. All of the pictures are filled with scenery from a place that is so special to us. We even got a few shots with my favorite pup, JJ, a white lab! One of our favorite memories is our “first look”. There were so many exciting, anxious, and happy emotions, but once we finally looked into each other eyes we were calm and ready to take on the day. It was so awesome to be surrounded by all of our friends and family, it just would not have be the same without them. We have so many fabulous memories from that day, it was better than anything we ever imagined.

Shortly before our three year anniversary, Todd and I started talking about spending our lives together. I knew he was “The One” and was certainly excited about the idea of an engagement and planning a wedding. However in all our conversations, I never imagined a proposal to be in the near future. When friends would ask me when I thought we would get engaged, I would perpetually say, “Maybe in 6-8 months,” never thinking about the date actually getting any closer. I’m not someone who is easily caught off guard, but in this case Todd was 100% committed to his proposal being a complete surprise to me. He definitely succeeded.

He used my friends to gain insight into what type of ring setting I might like, and he bought the ring and planned the whole proposal in two weeks while I was out of the country travelling for work. My co-worker teased me on our flight home that he might be waiting for me with a ring at the airport. Ironically he was at the airport, with the ring, but without any plan to propose! He carried the ring around with him everywhere for the next week, afraid that if he left it anywhere at home I might find it. The following Saturday, still jet-lagged and exhausted, I woke up early and was surprised to see that Todd was already awake and staring at me. Although I wasn’t yet fully awake or alert, I’ll never forget the first words out of Todd’s mouth or my response. Todd asked, “Will you be with me forever?” and instead of thinking it was such a sweet thing to say or realizing it was actually THE proposal, I responded in the most sassy way possible – I wagged my ring finger at him as if to say, “Where’s the ring that goes with that question??” When a beautiful diamond ring popped up hovering just over my wagging finger I was so shocked and surprised I don’t think I ever actually remembered to say, “Yes!” I just shook my head, kissed him, and jumped out of bed… the celebration couldn’t wait – the champagne was poured before 7am!

Todd and I spent our first vacation together at Todd’s family’s home on Hilton Head Island, so naturally it seemed like the perfect place to gather our closest friends and family for an intimate destination wedding. When thinking about details for the day, Style Me Pretty was one of my main sources for inspiration and ideas – I actually pieced together an inspiration board (primarily with images found on SMP!) to help us focus our overall aesthetic for the day. Todd and I wanted the vibe of the day to balance vintage, romantic and pretty with clean, nautical and preppy details with a decidedly casual feeling overall. To achieve this through color, we loved the juxtaposition of the soft pink coral accents off of the cleaner, saturated navy. We tried to weave this contrast through all of the details — bouquets of romantic coral roses, dahlias, and green mini-hydrangeas were played off of preppy grosgrain ribbon wraps, etc. We carried preppy grosgrain detail throughout ceremony and reception décor – everywhere from tying each pair of flip flop favors with a grosgrain ribbon to decorating the scoops for the candy buffet with grosgrain bows!

Our reception and ceremony locations within the Palmetto Dunes resort could not have been more perfect for achieving our desired look and feel. The reception took place in the backyard of a large rental home over looking the lagoon, but was close enough to the beach that we could have the seaside ceremony we wanted. Guests were greeted at the beach with a refreshing drink table and flip flops for everyone. Curly willow branches and candles lined the aisle and simple arrangements of curly willow and orchids marked the altar space without obstructing the beautiful view of the ocean beyond. Although the ceremony was short and sweet, we made it meaningful with a reading by my sister, the Matron of Honor, and a vocal performance by one of the bridesmaids of one of our favorite songs – Ingrid Michaelson’s “The Way I Am.” Guests were able to walk back to the house for the cocktail hour while Todd and I stayed behind to capture sunset photos.

We wanted to keep the cocktail hour and the reception décor simple and casual since it was taking place outdoors in a naturally beautiful environment, but knew that our evening reception would need some source of light. The use of café string lights and Japanese lanterns had been on our list of “must-haves” from the beginning, but I never imagined it to execute as beautifully as it looked the evening of the wedding. The best part? The lights were a total DIY project! My mother helped find the reasonably priced lights and lanterns online, and my father, brother, brother-in-law and Todd worked together to engineer and assemble the whole thing! Functionality aside, the lights gave the whole evening a wow-factor and looked incredible in the photos! The use of varying sizes and shades of coral in the lanterns gave dimension to the lighting without looking busy or becoming distracting. After dinner, guests danced the night away on the pool patio under the glow of the lights!

The one moment that stands out to me was our “first look” shots with Allison and Rich. I think everyone could tell that Todd and I were pretty nervous throughout the day as we were getting ready. Having the “first look” photo session in advance of the ceremony was perfect because it created a setting where our initial reaction to seeing each other could be intimate and emotional. I love the photos on the dock that are part of this “first look session.” I also love the drama of the sunset photos, the pure joy and happiness captured in the “first dance” photos, and the sweetness and innocence of the photos of my ring bearer – especially of him with me at the beach after the ceremony.

When it came time for booking vendors, my first priority was photography. We met with several photographers, but after meeting Allison (Allison Reisz Photography) we knew she was the one we wanted! Insane talent and ridiculously beautiful photography aside, Allison was so down to earth and easy to chat with – we knew we would be comfortable with her on the wedding day. Our photography turned out beautifully! Allison and her husband Rich captured all of the details and important moments perfectly – the photography looks so good that I can’t even believe it is Todd and I in the picture!

Joseph and I met while he was in Law school and I was in graduate school. We met in passing on a sidewalk. He was wearing a West Virginia hat, so I stopped to ask him if he was from WV. I am originally from WV and it turned out he was too. The conversation ended with him asking for my phone number so we could get together and watch some WVU football games together. A week later he asked me out on our first date. I surprised him with a grooms cake that was a WV hat, since his hat was the whole reason we met. We were together three years before we were engaged and were engaged for year before we got married. He proposed while we were on a bike ride on Kiawah Island. 

I fell in love with the Governor Thomas Bennett House for a few reasons. It’s courtyard and gardens were perfect for the outdoor ceremony we dreamed of and for a dance tent. I loved that my guests could enjoy dinner on the piazza and inside the beautiful Charleston style mansion.

The hardest part of planning the wedding for me was choosing colors. I fell in love with a fabric pattern that was green so we planned the entire wedding theme based on that fabric. Cindy did an awesome job at taking my vision of a wedding with a vintage feel and incorporating the pattern into so many details. Every detail and event of the day was even more beautiful than I had imagined. My favorite part of the day was walking with my dad down the aisle to meet Joseph in front of the fountain in the courtyard to exchange our vows.
