From Kendall ….. at Eclatante Event Design …

Kelly & Josh were two of the most wonderful people we have ever met. Very urban, very chic and very unusual, they had definite ideas about certain things they wanted at their wedding.

First, Josh is a true connoisseur of cocktails – an expert, of sorts, on the prohibition era. Which we loved, because it created an extremely interesting backdrop for the design and details for their wedding. We brought in a stunning solid wood bar that was created for a speakeasy. Josh carefully chose the drinks that would be available at the bars – there were only four of them. We arranged to have the specially chosen bartenders attend a dress rehearsal where they learned, not only how to make these very special drinks, but how to move, how to speak to the guests and how to dress. We provided them with the authentic details that dressed them up that day. There were “House Rules” as there were in the Chicago Speakeasies and recipe cards for the guests for each of the four drinks. The guests were totally charmed by all the details. It was truly amazing.

The tables, too, were designed to reflect this very specific era. Rather than have typical centerpieces, we created, instead, a look that incorporated lamps and ashtrays and other elements that you might find on the table at a Speakeasy. Inside the ashtrays and other vessels, Beautiful Blooms placed absolutely amazing freeze-dried and hand-painted green roses. We also used pheasant feathers because it just seemed to work! And, if you look closely, you’ll notice that some of the tables are parsons tables covered with faux ostrich leather.

One more little tidbit – Kelly & Josh met on Craig’s List. We thought it would be charming to print their initial emails to each other on cocktail napkins.

Weddings are much the same. I’ve said it a million times but it really is “all in the details.” So in honor of our new site, and all of its new details, I wanted to spend a week highlighting the beautiful details that our Little Black Book members have captured.

This first set was sent to me by Ingrid over at Myrtle & Marjoram Photography…

Top Left: For me, flip flops are a must. The only way that I am going to dance the night away is if I can kick off my shoes and get comfortable. I love this bucket of flip flops.

Top Right: Another great detail for any wedding is a signature cocktail. SUCH a good way to bring a bit of personality into the affair and save a bit on the bar bill!

Center: The cupcakes are so cute. I love that they are presented in a really simple, understated way. Like the bride was serving her friends a sweet treat in her own home.

Bottom Left: The lily of the valley bouquet is just so beautiful. Such a pretty, romantic touch.

Bottom Right: I love when florals are potted in containers that are casual and rustic. Pairing the beautiful blooms with a copper pot that you might see in someone’s home, is a nice way to make your decor seem warm and welcoming.

Here are some notes from Rebecca, the planner behind this gorgeous day…

Welcome – As guests entered the grass from the dusty gravel road, they were greeted with lavender garnished lemonade in mason jars. The property had a bunch of old paint chipped doors lying around, so we used those to make up the table tops anywhere we had an excuse to! The mason jars sat atop the wooden door (which was resting atop wine barrels) and we adorned the table with a scattering of bricks and an old crate tumbling with lemons.

Best Wishes – We used another old door table top to display Sarah and Mike’s wish table. Beautiful apothecary jars were used for guests to write notes for Sarah and Mike to open on their one-year anniversary as well as for them to take a pre-written wish that Sarah and Mike had made for their guests.

Right this Way – As a way to encourage guests to move from the welcome lawn to ceremony, I strung along an old fence a long line of twine and small clothes pins featuring dozens of photos of Sarah and Mike as babies, childhood, up until photos of them together as adults. Even the embarrassing glamour shots and awkward teenage phase photos made their debuts – guests were delighted.

Escort Cards – Juniper provided gorgeous terra cotta pots planted with herbs and lambs ear. I had guest names calligraphed on wood (tongue depressors!) and stamped table numbers in a fresh moss green.

Get Cozy – Wood boxes and baskets held slippers and pashminas encouraging women guests to kick off their heels and get cozy. The weather turned cool almost immediately after the ceremony so this touch was totally appreciated.

The Bar – I had Sarah and Mike come up with a few signature drinks that would be special to them- something they shared on a romantic vacation, their first date, a funny story, etc. We created a large chalkboard menu for them listing their signature drinks with funny and sweet descriptions of each drink and how it came to be.

The incredibly personlized touches that Rebecca infused into this wedding are just perfect. The end results seems like this magical evening, filled with intimate touches and understated elegance. To Make the Fans…

These are just brown cardstock, white cardstock (run through my printer), wooden fan handles and ribbon. I used double sided tape to adhere the white page with content onto the brown cardstock and then used my gluegun to sandwhich the handle between both pieces of brown cardstock. Embellished with a ribbon, they looked super cute!

To Make Seed Packs…

They were “planted” in a flat of wheat grass that I grew from seeds I found at my local garden center. It grows super fast and I actually had to “trim” it several inches before the wedding to keep in manageable. The numbers were printed on white cardstock and cut to even strips. The names were printed on pink vellum and trimmed with a scalloped scissor. I overlayed the name over the number to create the effect seen here. The whole thing was put together with some double sided tape. I then hot-glued a skewer to the back and stuck it down into the grass in alphabetical rows.

To Make the Personalized Drink Flags…

A little added flair to their signature cocktail…customized stirrers. There are just long wooden skewers that I attached pink cardstock to. I ran it through my printer, cut out the strips and used double sided tape to adhere it to the skewer.

To Make the Monogram Letters…

Love using unique elements to decorate and personalize…these were hung on the church doors and were made out of moss in keeping with the natural air of this event. You can make them out of anything to match whatever decor is appropriate. I start by printing the letters in whatever font matches our other paper products. Using a photocopier, I blow up the letter until it’s the size I want. Sometimes this involves printing the same letter across multiple sheets and piecing it together like a big puzzle. I then trace it on a piece of 2″ think styrofoam board (from Michael’s crafts) and cut it out with a craft knife. Using a glue gun and a bunch of moss (also from Michael’s) you can create a custom piece for less than $20.
