From the bride… As cliché as it may be, Ryan and I actually met in a coffee shop. While we waited in line we started chatting and the croquembouche that was on display became a point of conversation. Most people don’t even know what a croquembouche is, so we were both surprised when the other knew about it. It turns out we had both seen the same cooking show a week prior that featured the French wedding cake. As we talked more, we discovered that we had a similar story and shared many of the same interests. We were both new to the area so we made plans to explore our new city together. He knew how much I loved good food, so the following week we had dinner at Willow, which is still one of our favorite restaurants. Our three-hour dinner was filled with amazing food, wine and great conversation. We both knew that night that we had found something special, and he’s been my partner in crime ever since. Ten months later Ryan worked with the chef to recreate a menu of all our favorite things and proposed in a private room of the very same restaurant. For dessert, Ryan had the pastry chef make a mini croquembouche, and Ryan brought it out himself with the ring. It was so fitting for the moment since that’s really how it all started.  

We incorporated a wine box ceremony to reflect the theme of our wedding. We placed three wines from Montaluce in a wooden box with a love letter to each other. On our first anniversary we will open one of the bottles of wine and read the notes we wrote to each other on our wedding day. Then we will write new letters to each other and place them in the box to open on our fifth wedding anniversary and continue the same tradition on our tenth anniversary. There were so many amazing moments on our wedding day, but nothing touched us as much as the ceremony. We wrote the entire ceremony ourselves, and each word was a true reflection of our love for each other. It was the most perfect expression of everything we believe in and everything we have committed to each other. One of my favorite photos is actually just after the ceremony. When we walked out. we were whisked away to a room so we could have a moment alone. We both started tearing up immediately because the ceremony had been so beautiful and moving. There’s a picture of the two of us where we are facing each other and we’re both wiping away tears with a tissue. It is a moment I will never forget, and it was so special to have even few brief minutes with my new husband.

The most special thing about our wedding was actually the date. We got married on November 11, 2011. Some people say that when you see 11:11 on the clock, you are supposed to make a wish because it is the only time that all of the digits are the same. I told Ryan about this when we first started dating, and it has developed into something very meaningful to us. Whenever we see 11:11 on the clock, we will stop whatever we are doing and make a wish for our future. Regardless of what exactly the wish is, it is one minute to stop and reflect on us. I give so much credit to our vendors for making all of our wedding dreams come true. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day, and I truly think that it is because we surrounded ourselves with people who were so incredible to work with.

From the bride… As I began putting the pieces together for our big day, I began to feel very overwhelmed. I love so much about weddings that I actually had a very difficult time narrowing down which details I wanted to include. Ok, I admit … my Pinterest addiction didn’t help. I had so many ideas but no clue how to create a cohesive event. After fighting myself over cakes or cupcakes, salmon or beef, and centerpieces, I decided to take a step back. I decided to make our wedding about “us” and not “me.” After I changed my focus I began to create the wedding of our dreams. I knew from the beginning that we were not the traditional couple. Our first dance was going to be “When I’m Sixty-Four” by The Beatles and we didn’t play the Electric Slide or the Macarena. Our wedding was going to be about our love for each other and not a cookie-cutter event.

We wanted the feel of our wedding to be very old Florida. There was lots of  lace, oil lamps, cut-glass bowls and real Florida scenery in our wedding. Since both of our families are from small southern towns in the heart of Florida, it was very important to us that our wedding was about our families as well. We included pictures of our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents at the seating card table. The gold rings I wore on my right hand belonged to my grandmother and great-grandmother. My shoes were vintage Salvatore Ferragamo pumps given to me by my aunt years ago. My childhood minister officiated the ceremony. Andrew’s father played guitar for the ceremony. Two of the songs used in the processional were written by Andrew. I was escorted down the aisle by both my father and mother. Needless to say, our wedding was all about us. As far as the details, we did a lot by ourselves. I made the boys’ bow ties, the ring bearer pillows, the “Here Comes the Bride” sign, the invitations, and even decorated the hanger for the picture of the dress. Friends and family helped with the invitations, the candy buffet and much, much more. I may have gotten a little carried away, but it was definitely all worth it in the end. It was all of the personal touches that made our wedding day so special.

We couldn’t have had a more fantastic day without Harbour Ridge Yacht and Country Club and Mi.Amore.Foto. Harbour Ridge Yacht and Country Club was just perfect. The view was spectacular, the dining room was impeccably Florida, and they had incredibly gracious staff. Not to mention they specially made us a guava-filled wedding cake even though it wasn’t on the menu. Other than the “I do’s,” the photography was the most important aspect of our wedding. We wanted a photographer that listened, was someone that we could trust and even collaborate with on our vision. Shannon Mathis of Mi.Amore.Foto was way beyond a wedding photographer. She made us feel so comfortable and truly captured our love. Our wedding day was incredibly personal and loving. As I look at our photos I am reminded of how lucky we are to have one another and our family and friends to support us. This day was only one day out of many in our marriage, but it stands out as the most beautiful start a couple could ask for.

Neil and I met in high school. We became friends first, but it was soon apparent to all of our friends that we should be dating. After working up the nerve, Neil finally asked me out and we’ve been together ever since. Not everyone thought that high school sweethearts would last, but nine years later we were getting married.

Being a wedding planner, I’ve planned countless weddings and events for my clients, so I felt fully prepared to put together my big day. I soon realized how different it can be when it’s your own wedding! Instead of having to reign in my client’s wishes and dreams, it was now my own! Luckily, I got to work with some amazing vendors who helped me bring my vision to life, so on the day I could just enjoy every moment. Neil’s family is Hindu, while my family has both Christian and Jewish sides to it. Trying to bring out all the sides of our cultural and religious backgrounds in a mixed wedding while still honouring their traditions, was one of the more fun challenges of putting together our big day. I think this was also probably one of our guest’s favourite aspects of the wedding. My guests were wowed by all the colour and extravagance of the Indian portions, while we also got to show off some fun Jewish traditions.

I was surprisingly calm the morning of the wedding while my bridesmaids and I got ready at my house. It wasn’t until very close to ceremony time, that I started to get nervous. Normally on wedding days I’m the one in charge to make sure things are running smoothly. Today it was out of my hands; and on the biggest day of my life nonetheless! We started off the day with our Canadian ceremony under the tent at the beautiful Angus Glen Golf Club (the site of all the day’s festivities). As I walked down the aisle on my father’s arm, in between glances at my groom, I tried my best to take in all of my guests. I felt so loved as I saw all the happy smiles and tears from my friends and family. We ended the ceremony in the traditional Jewish manner, with Neil stepping on the glass to a chorus of “Mazel Tov” from the guests.

After some very hot family and bridal party portraits (and I’m not just talking about the people – it was blazing hot outside!), it was on to Wedding Ceremony two! As a proper Hindu bride, I had to get ready and change into my gorgeous plum and pink coloured Indian wedding dress and wait for the ceremony while the fun started outside. Neil, surrounded by his friends and family, looked like an Indian prince while riding a magnificent white horse to greet my waiting family. Despite the heat, Neil’s entourage was dancing up a storm to the beat of the Dhol player. Soon they were ready for me, and I made my walk down the aisle on the terrace, surrounded by my bridesmaids. It meant a lot to have them by my side to share in the special moment. The Hindu ceremony under the colourful Mandap was quite a different experience from the first. There are many steps in the much longer ceremony, and the Hindu Priest made sure to involve the family members in many aspects of the interactive ritual.

After a cocktail hour featuring both Indian and Canadian hors d’oeuvres, we were ready to get the party started. Guests had a laugh at our UFC inspired wedding video for the bridal party entrances. As big Mixed Martial Arts fans, Neil and I then entered with Neil wearing an official UFC belt. I think he definitely felt like a champion as we both danced our way onto the dance floor. Instead of being seated, we then encouraged our guests to come join the party! We followed this with the traditional Jewish Hora, where Neil and I were lifted up in our chairs while our guests circled us.

After working up an appetite, it was time to enjoy our sit down four course meal. Guests were offered entree choices between Canadian dishes, and fusion-style plated Indian dishes, so everyone got to try something they desired! We wanted our guests to really feel special, so we had the menus personalized with each guest’s name at the top. In between courses, after all the heart warming speeches were done, we then had fun watching a Bollywood dance performance by The Wedding Choreographers.

My main inspiration for the theme of the day was colour. It was an elegant and stylish affair showcasing the colours purple, silver and white through most aspects of the wedding. My bridesmaids looked stunning in their individualized eggplant cocktail dresses, while the groomsmen were able to choose their own slim black suits to go with the silver skinny ties we gave them. I also had purple shoes underneath my wedding dress, but my favourite of my accessories was my custom made hair fascinator – a beautiful ivory flower! Most of the real flowers for the day were a creamy white, seen in the bouquets and the centrepieces, while our first ceremony’s carnation pomanders were a bright purple.

One of my favourite parts of the wedding was the candy table I designed featuring only purple, white and silver candies and chocolates. It was a huge hit amongst the guests who filled their goody bags with tons of treats!

Although I had many fantastic vendors to pull off my day, I also couldn’t have done it without the help of my friends and family. My DIY projects, like my homemade card box, popcorn bag favours, program fans and seating chart, would not have turned out the way they did without the help of some great friends. As a wedding planner, I definitely had my dream wedding, though as much as I loved all the details of the day, my favourite part overall was being surrounded by the love and support of all of our guests. I’ve never felt happier than when we were surrounded by all our loved ones, making this a day I will truly never forget.

From the mother of the bride… Annie and Ryan’s story starts out like many others….they were high school sweethearts. In the summer of 2004, their respective churches collaborated to organize a work camp that would travel to Georgia to paint and repair run-down homes in impoverished neighborhoods. They worked together, shared this life changing experience and said their good-byes. But for Ryan, there was a lingering feeling that he wanted to know Annie better. Andrew, a mutual friend and matchmaker, and later an usher at their wedding, helped to make that happen. The rest is a love story, pure and simple. Their wedding was a reflection of what they most hold dear: family and tradition…

They were married at Christ the King Church with Father Woods, Ryan’s dean and mentor at Boston College, officiating the ceremony. Each of their siblings were in the wedding party. Ryan’s brother, Michael, and sister, Danielle, are both performers and provided the vocals for the ceremony. Four generations were present, including Ryan’s 100-year-old great-grandmother, Anna.  

Annie collected family wedding photos and frames to display “The Generations of Love” on the piano at the reception. Their vision was one of classic elegance and romance. With the backdrop of Willowbend’s lush green golf course, a vintage red barn and neutral decor in the ballroom, Annie and Ryan chose elements with unique textures in soft colors. The whimsical “Circles” tablecloth, custom made by Table Toppers, was the inspiration. Combined with the large, silky blooms of Phalaenopsis orchids and the gold accents seen in the wine goblets, vases and menu cards, the tables were a nod to Annie’s love of art and all things creative. To top it off, we experienced record-breaking warm weather in October, allowing us to enjoy the views from the venue patios. A honeymoon to Disney World was the happy ending to this fairy-tale romance. A special thanks to Jenny Moloney for capturing this special day and putting us all at ease.  You are warm, genuine and a true artist.

From Rachel Di-Re of Fleur-Di-Re… When Sissi first contacted us for her Long Island country club wedding, she knew exactly the look she was going for… “cute, quirky and country vintage”.  Nothing luxurious or over the top, she wanted to bring a casual cottage feel to the country club setting.  The color palette of all shades of pink with accents of ivory and grey added a dreaminess to the concept.  

We chose florals like Hydrangea, Ranunculus, Stock, Queen Anne’s Lace and Bupluerum that would lend an organic, just-picked-from-the-garden feeling.  The pom pom shape was a recurring theme that played out in the form of layered tissue pom poms, Dahlias, craft pom poms and even a hot little tutu party dress (one of three ensembles Sissi wore for her special day). Sissi even made hundreds of handmade pom poms for her guests to throw during the recessional!

A master of DIY, Sissi proved you don’t need to be an expert at sewing to create Etsy-worthy details.  Scissors and glue were her secret weapon.  Look out for handmade details like the banner-style aisle block, custom table numbers with utilitarian metal house numbers and floral fabric backing, as well as mason jar votives wrapped in lace-like paper.

From the Bride… There were a lot of memorable moments for me but my favorite part of the day was definitely our Persian ceremony and the vows we shared with one another! My husband Bassim spoke with such conviction and love, placing me in a state of 1. Shock, because he rarely gets emotional and 2. Thankfulness to be his best friend and wife. Our love grew leaps and bounds that day and it continues to do so every day in all different ways. We were so thankful for our friends and family who showed us great support, love and joy throughout the entire wedding day! We were truly blessed.

We didn’t want to over do it with decor  for our ceremony so we had it at the gorgeous Art Gallery of Alberta. There was so much natural beauty and lighting surrounding the building that we didnt need that much decor! Our wedding theme was split between the Persian ceremony and Egyptian reception. We had a traditional Persian ceremony featuring lots of whites and naturals. During the planning I looked for a lot of vintage mason jars and vases for the flowers. We used the most gorgeous garden roses and carnations. PS- I think it is time for the carnation comeback!!!!! The Ceremony was an ancient Persian ritual of getting married while seated in front of a spread of symbolic items, such as honey, apples, spices and family heirlooms.  During the ceremony the bride’s closest friends hold a silk lace fabric over the couples head and shower them in sugar flakes. Our reception had a traditional Zaffa entrance which involves a musical procession of drums, bagpipes, horns, belly dancers and men carrying swords. This announces that the marriage is about to begin. Our reception colors were pewter grey, ivory and pops of Tiffany blue.

My advice to any bride planning her big day is to just be okay with things not being perfect. You are going to struggle and things will go wrong from time to time but you just have to let certain things (like a perfect wedding) go! From my personal experience it is so easy to get lost in all of the drama that you really lose track of why you are getting married in the first place. All that matters is that you are going to spend your life with the person you love! If possible, hire a wedding planner so you have someone who always has your back and can handle the situations you don’t want to get involved with. I had the honor of having the fabulous Maria Milonas Tsounis of Flawless Couture Event Planning to help put our dream wedding together. She is the best of the best! Finally, have at least one date night a week with your sweetheart and there can be NO wedding talk during this special time!

From the Bride…We both have an immense appreciation for the aesthetics of the past, and that played heavily into the vision of our day. Working with a relatively tight time constraint (we were engaged just six months) and a very tight budget, we talked through what elements were especially important to us. Quickly we discovered the essence of what truly mattered for our wedding day. We wanted to celebrate with our friends and family in a comfortable environment we described as “rustic elegance”. Both classy and classic. We tried to remove the barriers that keep many brides and grooms from spending time with their guests.

From that basic premise, I took the reins of our aesthetics. After investigating several “rustic” venues we kept comparing everything to Willowbank, a beautiful historic estate on the Niagara River, which also happens to be where I attend school. Built in 1836 for an influential family, Willowbank is a Greek Revival estate built of cut limestone. After falling into disrepair in the late 20th century, a generous philanthropist saved the building and made it the home of a school for heritage conservation. What really spoke to us was the balance between the apparent glory of what Willowbank once had contrasted with its present partially decayed state. The stories told in the open walls and many layers of wallpaper and paint felt like the perfect setting to begin our journey together.

With that decision made Willowbank became the perfect venue for our wedding reception and everything else fell in to place. Vintage looks from a modern perspective. Nothing needed to be perfect – instead we focused our energy on making sure everyone (ourselves included) would have a great time celebrating our special day.

To make the evening social, we opted for passed hors d’oeurves and food stations instead of a traditional banquet dinner. This was ideal for our venue as people could enjoy the beautiful grounds, spend time closer to the live music on the porch or find a place to sit inside the house. We wanted to be sure the beauty of the estate was highlighted so we decorated very little – using ivory linens on high top tables and flowers in jars and vases my sisters, mom and I collected. We chose white roses (the first flowers Adam had given me), peach roses (which my mom carried on her wedding day) and queen anne’s lace (which I always loved picking from the side of the road when I was little). It couldn’t have been better that the day of the wedding the front lawn at Willowbank was filled with queen anne’s lace.

Adam and I both have lost grandparents to Alzheimer’s – Adam’s Papa (Pepper) and my Granny (Jessie). We wanted to do something small to remember them during our day so I embroidered Papa onto Adam’s tie and I carried my Granny’s locket in my bouquet.

With Willowbank filled with all our loved ones to support us as we begin our married life, it felt like being at home. I could not have dreamed of a more perfect day.

From Kristi Wright Photography… Erica + Michael were married in a beautiful intimate, outdoor ceremony, in October, at the Allan House, in Austin, Texas. Erica + Michael are the sweetest couple!  Touches of yellow and gray accented the day including fun paper poms lining the aisle. Pearl Events Austin did a fantastic job of coordinating the event and making sure the day went smoothly. With Becky Navarro (Pearl) in charge, Erica + Michael never had to worry over a thing! The food by Austin Catering was so good – a mix of Louisiana (where the bride is from) and Texas favorites. Michael + Erica made their get away in a pedicab with a sweet “just married” sign attached!
