From the bride… Our shoot was on a November afternoon in San Diego. We decided to do the shoot at Lake Hodges because of it’s fantastic scenery, it’s intimacy, and beautiful greens. Mitch and I are simple people and wanted to shoot to be understated, romantic, and timeless, which is exactly what we want for the wedding, as well.

The shoot was so fun and really spontaneous. We started in the emerald green clover fields, and I tromped around the dirt in my wedges, which felt unnecessary at the time, but looked natural and easy in the pictures. After we explored that first area for a while, we changed outfits and went down one of the trails. On the trail we happened upon a man who was walking his two horses. We asked him if he would mind us taking some pictures with his beautiful horses and he said, “Go right ahead!” and then gave both Mitch and I carrots to feed his horses. After that, we ventured closer to the lake and took some of my favorite shots standing in the reeds and then laying on a bed of the reeds. I was almost completely sure I was going to fall through and end up having the last shots of me with my legs sprawled in the air and my shoulders dunked in muddy lake water, but the bed held us and they are, in my opinion, some really beautiful unique shots.

We are completely thrilled with our pictures and can’t wait to take more on our wedding day in March!

From the Bride… Josh and I met in Pacific Beach on tax day in April of all days. My sister and I needed a night to catch up and wanted to play some pool so she took me to a pool hall where Josh and his buddies ended up at the table next to us. Josh grew up playing pool in New York with his dad so needless to say he got my attention and we played and pumped the old juxebox in the corner and talked life and politics. Josh is one of those people you can’t help but be either pulled towards or disengaged from. We instantly had a connection morally and we constantly had way too much fun together to ignore. The first year we were dating was a blur of fun and crazy milestones that tested our strength as people and made us stronger as friends and companions. Josh is truly my best friend, and I feel like he gives so much to my life I would never find in anyone else.

For our wedding I wanted everything earthy and natural. I feel like Josh and I are total beach bums at heart but we definitely wanted to keep to a clean, fresh and nature-minded theme that was as comfortable as it was classy. We both surf and so the beach was definitely high on our list for locations. We wanted to find something we could get about 100 people into without leaving our coast, but we figured the location would be far out of our budget. In the end, the Powerhouse was way less than we thought and it allowed me to do exactly what I wanted; have an incredible view where I could hear the waves while we said our vows, be inspired, pick all of my vendors and not be locked into any hotel contract or resort package. It was perfect. Friends said they saw a pod of dolphins jumping in the water behind us during our ceremony.

My dress was from a shop in Escondido, California called Bridals by Susanti. I never contemplated my wedding dress as a girl growing up but I couldn’t have dreamed of a more perfect dress to wear that day. It helped to know that Josh trusted and appreciated my style and would like it too. The floral arrangements were beyond my high expectations and Nicole Appelman did such an amazing job displaying my vision so perfectly. Succulents, seed pods, garden roses, peonies, and air flowers made up the bouquet. I was so impressed when I saw it. The different sized glass bottles and mason jars bought at random shops lined the aisle and hung from the trellis with big peonies, succulents and chamomile. The chuppah was one of my favorite parts of the wedding. It was so beautiful and I loved the light curtains that made it feel like a beautiful little room for Josh and I. The escort table was centered with two beautiful vintage windows with guests names written in white. We had touches of wood and moss and lots of lacey candles to bring the natural, vintage feel together. Table names were handmade photos of places Josh and I have both lived throughout our life. Everywhere from New York to Maui. Seating place cards were handmade from colored paper, rubber stamps, corks, wire and a lot of love. Because we were doing several traditional Jewish things in our ceremony, we also created a cheat-sheet for our guests to follow along with the different aspects of our day.

There are so many good memories from that day but some of my favorites were my son walking in with the “Here comes the bride” sign, my Dad’s speech which blew my mind, the beautiful Spanish guitar played by Dennis Bergstrom and the kick everyone got out of the mini Ben and Jerry’s and popcorn we had after dinner. I owe so much to my close friends and family who spent hours helping me cut circles and punch holes and print photos. I have the best people in my life and it’s just getting better! What a crazy, amazing day!

From Love Ala Photography…Vinscena and Sean ooze style. But more than that, they are humble and real. Their wedding was classic and chic and easy. Joe proposed while on vacation in Turks and Caicos. Our first night on the island, Joe insisted that we take a stroll on the beach before dinner. I was extremely hesitant (it was dark out!) and hungry (everyone knows how stubborn I get when hungry), but reluctantly I agreed. He suggested we take a picture with his brand new camera, so he walked over to a beach lounger to set up the automatic shot. As he walked back towards me, I noticed the red light wasn’t blinking – which meant it wasn’t actually taking a timed picture. Little did I know, he was recording the whole thing! Just as I was about to yell at him for setting it up wrong, he got down on one knee and recited all of the reasons he loved me, and then (of course) asked me to marry him.

Part of our inspiration for the wedding comes from the origin of the diamond he proposed with. The diamond is a family heirloom from his great-grandmother’s 1920s art deco-inspired cocktail ring. So as we started the whole planning process, we were focusing on a classic, old-hollywood vibe. The first and only venue that we visited was the historical Don Room at El Cortez. Located in Downtown San Diego, El Cortez has hosted some of the finest old-hollywood stars including Clark Gable and Ginger Rogers. Once we took at look at the 24-karat gold ceiling, we were hooked!

After we chose the venue, I couldn’t believe how fast things started to unfold! I knew from the minute Joe proposed, that I would need some wedding planning help, so I turned to Style Me Pretty’s Little Black Book and found Susanne Duffy from Crown Weddings! She was excellent and helped make my dreams turn into a reality. And more importantly – the actual day of the wedding felt flawless. After hearing some of my poorly thought-out decorative ideas, she pointed me in the direction of Tam Ashworth at Isari Flower Stuidio. Tam was able to read me like a book and extract what I was envisioning for my big day like a mind-reader.

Our top three priorities for the wedding were photography, food and music. And we could not have ended up with better vendors for each of these. John Schnack, our photographer, captured our day exquisitely and gave us some of the most beautiful memories to look back on. Barry Layne from Coast Catering designed a mouth-watering menu for us including New Zealand lamb, macadamia nut-crusted sea bass and a dessert bar filled with Baileys shooters and peanut butter chocolate bombs. The band, NDEMAND, was the biggest hit of all! Our friends and family (young and old) were able to rock out on the dance floor. I swear it felt like we were at a private concert.

From the Bride… Spending many summer evenings admiring the breathtaking sunset views from Seaside Park made choosing our wedding location one of the easiest decisions. It was only fitting to have the ceremony and cocktail hour at this park atop the cliffs of our favorite Del Mar beach. Having the reception at the gorgeous L’Auberge Del Mar only steps away from Seaside Park was another decision that fell right into place. L’Auberge Del Mar was the perfect location for us because it truly captures the classic, coastal style we wanted to portray in our wedding. The harmonious balance between traditional charm and contemporary elegance combines to exude the welcoming atmosphere we wanted to extend to our guests.

When it came time to make decisions regarding the design and experience, we wanted our wedding to reflect us and to be an exciting and memorable experience for our dearest family and friends. “Vintage seaside elegance” was the best coined phrase to describe our wedding style. As we are both drawn to eclectic styles that meld traditional and modern elements, we wanted this reflected in our details.

For my gown, I looked for a classic silhouette with a modern twist making it unique. From the moment my mom first spotted the gorgeous Ines DiSanto gown, I knew it was the dress I would marry my best friend in. My grandmother passed away last year and I wanted a special way to include her in our day. I had a piece of her wedding dress embroidered with her monogram and sewn into my dress as my “something blue.” Ryan wanted a more modern take on groom’s attire and selected a sleek, tailored cut black suit. The many movies and stories about “dreaded bridesmaid dresses” led me to giving my bridesmaids a part in the selection of their dresses. I chose an array of Lula Kate, Lela Rose, and J.Crew dresses and let the girls select which dress fit their personality and body type best. This also enhanced the vintage component of our style.

We wanted our reception to have a relaxed, yet elegant feel so we combined burlap runners with antique silver pieces handed down from my great grandmother. We filled them with soft pink garden roses and an array of other romantic and natural looking flowers, combined with driftwood and succulents. Our gorgeous light blue and white striped menus and table numbers combined with starfish escort cards nodded to our seaside location. The darling vintage candy bar was a fun addition that gave us an opportunity to put some personal touches, such as the burlap “Love Is Sweet” sign my mom and I made and the pictures mounted on ribbon on the wall behind.

Most importantly, our wedding was the greatest celebration of our love we could have ever dreamt of. Getting to celebrate the day you marry your true love and best friend with your closest loved ones is all you can hope for and we certainly achieved that on August 27th.

For future brides… Hire a wedding coordinator! If you find somebody that your personalities work well together and they see your vision, it will result in a stress-free wonderful planning experience and beautiful event. We were so lucky to have the opportunity to work with Alison Sansom. She was not only the most talented and organized wedding coordinator, but such a sweet person and dream to work with! We owe a great deal of gratitude to Alison, all of our wonderful vendors, incredible guests, and our parents for making our wedding celebration the most memorable day of our lives!!

From the Bride…When we first began to pull ideas together for our wedding we knew we wanted it to be outdoors, close to home and a reflection of our casual style. I had always thought we would have an early fall wedding, as September and October are beautiful in San Diego; however, I figured that was not an option in light of rumored year long reservation dates. Being the planner that I am, I had our first location appointment booked within days of our May engagement. While heading over, I explained my family’s nostalgia for The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe – a place where we celebrated special occasions over the years and where my parents first worked, nearly 40 years ago. To our surprise The Inn had October 29th available and for anyone who was insane enough to plan a wedding for 160 guests in 5 months… the cost was tremendously discounted! Of course…we booked it!!!

With SO many creative directions a bride can take in the world of weddings my goal was to create a timeless event that was thoughtful, creative and fun. To help keep our style focused I needed inspiration, which ended up being my bouquet. The soft blush tones of pink, ivory and champagne with pops of navy and grey would be our color scheme. When all was said and done I would categorize our theme as a mixture of vintage and chic.

The thoughtful aspects of our wedding transformed the feeling… as a friend of ours put it, you could just feel the love. Some of those items included my little red radio flyer wagon from when I was a child, photos of our parents and grandparents on their wedding days, and my mom’s veil and my grandmother’s stole. Our wedding website featured his and her versions of our engagement and synopses of our love for one another, which our pastor read during our ceremony. Further, we wanted everyone to feel connected to our union and the celebration so we chose to face our guests during our ceremony and asked for song requests on our RSVP cards that we played all night long.

My husband and I are both creative in our ways and that creativity played out in many aspects of our wedding details. I scoured wedding blogs for months and found most of my DIY ideas here at SMP. Putting my own twist on Posh Paperie’s DIY banner, I made a bunch of pennant banner signs; my husband constructed and drew all of our chalk board directional signs, menu, and our ring bearer “here comes the bride sign”; and I had our baker make mini “I DO” flags for our cupcakes. I made vintage confetti cones that our guests tossed as we walked back down the aisle to the super fun Mumford & Sons song She Said Yes. I combined our escort cards and favors, wrapping mini succulents in painters’ paper and twine and I had my girlfriend from Design the Details use a fun mixture of fonts for our programs, to which I added ribbon, lace and burlap sashes with vintage wooden buttons. I used mason jars filled with sand and candles for a lighted path around the pool and although I didn’t make our ribbon wands due to time I would have! We have some diehard college football fans and our wedding fell on rival game day of course! Instead of fighting it, I went with it and we made up a “pick your team” sign coupled with cocktail napkins for each of the big games that day.

I am by far the most proud of our slideshow and what I called our living room vignettes… We decided to loop our slideshow on a flat screen in the reception bar area and paired up photos of my husband and myself at the same ages – which really got our crowd chuckling! Our groomsman Scott kindly let us borrow his photo booth set up (made up of PVC piping) which I transformed into a vintage living room vignette with some simple curtains, a cute settee and mustache props of course! For our second vignette, I wanted to put my own twist on the wedding monogram décor look… Once discovering our huge “D” marquee letter from Urban Outfitters (of course after the wedding I found the DIY for it!), Hall Events sought out the furniture for us and I crafted a cozy feel with glowing candles below the mantle, back dropped by streams of ribbon and lace that I glued onto a wooden dowel.

Our entire day was surreal… but one of my favorite moments was our last dance. With ribbon wands in hand our guests engulfed us, rushing in and out like a moving wave, rocking out to Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing, shaking those wands like it was going out of style! It was AMAZING!

Advice… To spread out the fun we had our rehearsal dinner on the Thursday before our wedding…I have been to too many weddings where the excitement in the air is uncontrollable and as the first event, guests REALLY like to have a good time at the rehearsal dinner and are consequently a lot of times at half speed for the main event. AND, don’t forget to make it your own!!!

From Couture Events … At Couture we hold a few key words in mind when styling weddings and our holiday tables: glamour, class, beauty, and whim. We can almost hear the photos singing a fabulous mashup of Fergie’s “Glamorous” and the Christmas classic, “Walking in a Winter Wonderland.” Set inside the Culy Warehouse we hung a backdrop of light bulbs against an unfinished wall. The contrast of soft and bright against the wall of rough and textured made for a perfect setting, creating a room that was all softly aglow. Our gorgeous brides are dressed in Bliss Bride’s winter wedding gowns and are accompanied by Couture Events very own snow-furred pup, Bruiser.

The table, benches, sofas, and chairs came from one of our favorite furniture rental companies, Lounge Appeal. The invitations made in icy hues, elegant cursive, and accented with silk ribbon and a crystal broach set the tone for an affair to be remembered. We also placed a name card at each setting to welcome the guests to their chair. The gorgeous centerpieces made of beautiful winter white flowers mixed with crystals and delicately glistening silver leaves. Crystal candelabras and shimmering candlesticks, timeless silver dinnerware and white glitter made for a truly winter chic table. To top it all off we add some snow (glitter) – our favorite and final touch. Be dazzled and enjoy, and don’t hold back an ounce of cheer this holiday season. FROST YOURSELVES, your holidays, and your wedding!

From Justin & Mary….We were inspired by the desert wedding from “Fools Rush In” when preparing for our San Diego stop. We wanted colorful streamers and a festive vibe full of terra cotta and accented by lace. La Estancia served as the perfect backdrop for our reception and we even found the perfect spot on the property to hang our brightly colored streamers! We bought flan from a nearby farmer’s market and mixed it in with some traditional breads and pastries to make a dessert table. There was berry water in vintage goblets, churros wrapped in lace and mini succulents as place cards.

How to pick a photographer: Personality is important. There is no doubt about that. And you’re going to want to go with a Photographer that makes you feel like a friend. You will spend more time with that person on your wedding day than you will your future spouse, so finding somebody you connect with is crucial. But that’s not all that goes into it. Because once the day is over, it will be your relationship with your Photographs, not your Photographer, that will become the most important thing. Did these images capture the feelings and emotion of the day? Can you look at them and feel like you’re right back in that moment? Are they authentic? Did they capture life as it happened. Are they enduring? Will they become iconic and nostalgic? Or will they just become the “heads in the brandy snifter”  shots of our generation. You want images that you will fall in love with over and over again for the next 50 or 60 years. Images that your grandchildren will be proud to put in silver frames. The last thing you want is for someone to look at your pictures and say, “So I see you got married in 2011.” You want something that leaves behind a legacy. A history. That documents the start of a life together. Something that will stand the test of time. Just like the two of you.
