I’ve been to so many weddings where the flowers take center stage. And to be honest, it’s pretty great to see gorgeous blooms tucked in every corner, dripping off every detail. BUT, that type of decor isn’t always in the budget, especially these days. So today, we are chatting about centerpieces that are gorgeous, but in just about every example, they are also largely affordable or DIY-able.

One way to really trim your budget is to hop on the teeny-tiny vases trend. Tons of perfect little containers, whether they are clear, white or fabulously colored, filled with small bunches of your favorite stems.

Another really great way to bring textures, colors and even prints into your wedding style is to use a box to house your flowers. Whether it’s a great old wooden box that you scored at a flea market or paper boxes covered in your favorite fabric, a box will add an unexpected touch to your decor that will really go a long way…

From Jenny…

My board is inspired by the vineyard location and the shabby chic theme the bride was looking for. I think this bouquet is a beautiful raspberry color and with the matching shoes, so elegant. I picture chandeliers hang from the trees, and the tables have different fabrics that pick up the raspberry colors with different vases, candles, etc in the center. I think variation in the tables will help for that “shabby chic” look. For some fun details, I was thinking a photobooth. They are popular now, guests love them, and you will have some great photos. I also like the element of incorporating silhouettes of the bride and groom – whether it be hanging them on a string at the reception and/or using them on the invitations. For favors, these raspberry boxes add a touch of elegance and you can include something that is important to you as a couple – a favorite dessert, something from your hometown, or something special for the two of you.

Little Black Dress Five Ways, IV

Now we’re pairing the Little Black Dress with a more rustic, kind of vintage look…

At first, I wasn’t sure if this look would work. Rustic and vintage usually go with warmer colors like chocolate brown, worn raspberry, soft yellow. But, the more I played with it, the more I fell in love with this palette. It’s very approachable, very simple but elegant. The black adds a touch of sophistication to a more natural style.

Color Palettes Questions – Peach or Orange?

Another reader question….I’m getting married in April 2009 and wanted to use orange and white for my wedding. However, after changing from a white dress to a different colored dress — the official name of the color is shell — I’m wondering if the bright orange is still a good choice. I was thinking perhaps a peach color might work better but I’m at a loss. Any ideas?

What do you think…does orange still work as an accent color or should she move more towards a peach hue?

Abby’s Answer…I am going to go out on a limb here and say that I love the idea of bringing in peaches AND oranges to compliment the shell color of her gown. I do think that using just orange would be stunning, but I am also a big proponent of varying the hues within a palette to add a sense of dimension.

I will say though, that it kind of depends on the style of the wedding. If this bride is going modern, orange should be the primary hue. Clean lines using calla lilies, contemporary place settings, sleek vases and such. If she is going more romantic, I think that peach should be the hue…

Color Palettes Questions – An Accent For Navy and Sage Green

It’s been so long since we tackled color palette dilemmas…and I thought it was about time! Throughout the day, I am going to be posting questions from readers who are having some color issues with the hopes that you guys can give your feedback and advice! At the end of the day, I will update with my own tips!

Let’s get to it!

From Ashley…I have finally decided on the colors of the bridesmaid dresses, navy which is accented with a light sage green sash. Now, I really would like to include an accent color to add a little more flare to this color palette. I was thinking something along the lines of pink…but I am beginning to think that pink may be way too many colors. I am tossing around the idea of ivory or white as the third and final color for our wedding palette. Is this an appealing color palette or should I stick with the simple two color scheme of navy and sage??

Abby’s Answer…Okay, I have to agree with the comments that suggested varying the hues of the navy and sage, rather than bringing in a different color. There is just something so clean and refreshing in a navy and green palette and if you bring in different hues, the palette will seem rich and textured…

Wedding Cake Alternatives

As much as I adore wedding cakes, brides seem to be coming up with some pretty gorgeous alternatives. I kind of love the idea of a candy buffet, either in addition to or in lieu of a wedding cake. Here are some really gorgeous candy and dessert buffets that just might make you re-think the cake decision…

Navy, Pink and White Wedding Color Palette

Today has been really fun for me…an exercise in beautiful colors! This next color palette is a classic and to me, one that will be around for a long time. Navy, accented with hues of Pink and White…

What I really love about this palette, is that it is both really approachable and yet fun & flirty. It reminds me of a beautiful beachside wedding, one of those late Summer weddings where everything seems so perfect and dreamy.

It’s funny…by simply exchanging one neutral for another (slate for navy) or one accent color (pink for yellow), you can achieve such different looks. The darker color grounds the palette and creates a sense of order, while the accent color adds a wisp of personality.

And speaking of color palettes…the time has come to announce the winner of our Abby Jean Contest! Here is the comment that was chosen…

“I like Option C the best. It just feels really fresh and modern. It would be a great color palette for any season. Option B would be a second favorite for the vibrant colors and cheery, preppy appeal. I can picture it with fabulous argyle and little sweaters with vintage brooches.”

Lark Cake Shop – Inspired Weddings

Can one color, one photo, one cake… inspire an entire affair? When I saw this cake designed by Lark Cake Shop, I was totally convinced.

I am in love with this cake. One part whimsy, one part beauty. Although it isn’t a traditional wedding cake, it seems sophisticated and elegant enough to hold its own at a any wedding. So for me, the answer is yes. A color, a photo, a cake….all can inspire your entire affair.

What do you think? My goal was to allow the cake to inspire the wedding…not to match it identically. The golds, deep pinks and cream hues…with a faint touch of teal blue, gave way to what I believe would be a stunningly sophisticated color palette. The gold lattice work on the cake was translated thru the patterning on the invitations and the ornate, though gorgeous jewelry. I softened the look up a bit and brought in an old world charm with the ruffled gown and the traditional roses.

Yellow Color Pallete

…Lots and lots of yellow. I have no idea why, but today, I am all about the yellow. Maybe it’s that Summer seems to be flying by, or that it just happens to be a perfect morning here in Boston. Whatever it may be, I am absolutely nuts for this pretty yellow palette. Particularly for an outdoors wedding, using the natural elements to add additional whispers of color.
