First, a little bit from Jewel Savadelis …

Emily and Danny, a well traveled couple that share a passion for great food and company, held their nuptuals at the beautiful Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Half Moon Bay on October 7, 2008. Emily celebrated her independence by choosing to walk down the aisle by herself, before exchanging personalized vows with Danny on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Emily’s favorite uncle sketched the ceremony as it was happening and presented the newlyweds the finished drawing during the reception. Their wedding featured a modern Asian Zen garden theme with details such as Taiwanese mung beans creatively incorporated into the floral arrangements that represented their culture and heritage. The ballroom at the Ritz-Carlton was transformed into a warm and inviting setting, with champagne colored drapery, Asian lanterns hung above the dance floor, and a mixture of kings, queens, and round tables topped by orchids, hydrangeas, roses, and river rocks. The 260 guests were treated to an elaborate 4-course dinner consisting of unique choices like Lobster Salad, Crispy Suckling Pig with Cassoulet, Baby Lamb Chops and Seared Sea Bass. After dinner, the guests took to the dance floor, piled into the photo booth, and enjoyed the elaborate dessert buffet which featured 17 specialty items such as green tea panna cotta, coconut tapioca, and passion mango gel.

So now … be prepared to grin for three straight minutes as you watch their movie! {make sure the sound is on}

How fantastic was that! SO fun.

I love the scroll work, the kind of culturally inspired touches that totally take this look to a new level. Next is the oh-so-gorgeous Vintage Travel…

The photos to the right show just how beautifully designed each piece is. There is NOTHING like good letterpress, it screams luxury. The next gorgeous invitation from the new collection is called Seaside Coast and although it’s so new, they haven’t had a chance to shoot pictures, you can tell that it will be completely fabulous in print…

LOVE! There is just something so beautiful about Peculiar Pair’s invitations. They have this perfect balance of timeless style with a modern charm that really sets them apart. And to be perfectly honest, pictures hardly do their designs justice. They are printed on the most beautiful paper…with deep letterpress impressions, gorgeous inks and flawless design. You’d think that I was working for them, but no…I just really love their invitations!

When a traditional wedding day is planned, it is important for the invitations to follow suit. The challenge to designing this invitation suite was trying to incorporate the personalities of this exuberant and energetic couple into a very formal style invitation.

Their shared interest in traveling the globe inspired the decision to incorporate vintage travel icons. They were integrated with the calligraphic style imagery in a way that gave the composition an energetic movement. We had the opportunity to interject a bit of humor in the direction card by including a quip about the steep San Francisco hills as well as the cow, chicken and leaf icons for the meal choices. The traditional navy ink color was counterbalanced with a cheery pear green.

So often we encounter couples that want to incorporate imagery from their heritage and Emily and Danny were no exception. The common challenge for these invitation designs is to bring these historical elements into a design that is fresh, contemporary and representative of the happy couple. The invitation design must also introduce the wedding day by complimenting either their theme, venue, palette or floral arrangements, to name a few. The result was a combination of chrysanthemums and cherry blossoms which were woven into a spirited plaid pattern that was representative of the ballroom floor detailing in The Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay. A bold contemporary monogram offered contrast to the small pattern and was used throughout the invitation and wedding day materials…

The need for a second invitation in Chinese as well as the several insert cards required us to develop a format that would neatly present all of the materials to their guests. Rather than have a multitude of loose cards all in one envelope, we created a pamphlet style folder with a slim pocket; The English text was printed on the outside, the Chinese text was printed on green paper and placed onto the inside panel and all of the additional cards slipped neatly into the side pocket. All were bound with a vertical belly band that included the couple’s monogram.

It’s not often that we get the opportunity to design an invitation suite that is completely non-traditional, but we’re always up for the task! We can’t say enough about how the proper type choices and image pairings can clearly communicate a very specific feeling. The mixture of multiple typestyles along with the decision to highlight certain areas of text with color and the scientific quality of the images communicates right of the bat that this event is going be oh-so-different.

Margaux and Beck were so unique that they chose simply to call their quasi-nuptial event “the twenty-first day of the month” a title which also marked the anniversary of their first date!

Whether traditional or not, the design of the invitation suite must directly translate to the festivities that have been planned. The reception would include a champagne bar complete with an array of herbs intended for guests to flavor their champagne! Herbal images repeated on the stationery was a nod toward this tasty delight yet to come. The ticket references were a perfect pairing to the venue, Union Station in Los Angeles.

If you are lucky, the process of designing your invitations will inspire new ideas to incorporate into your reception. The scientific quality of the herbal images and the gridded belly band seemed to beg for a few little bugs here and there; how could we resist! Margaux and Beck ran with this idea and asked each guest to draw a picture of a bug on the back of their reply card and then displayed the drawings together for all to see! We love it!
