From the bride… Our theme started out being “French Vintage,” although in reality, our wedding really ended up being an amalgamation of a lot of beautiful things we love. We kept everything quite neutral, adding splashes of colour through the garlands, flowers and china. I enjoyed the process of planning our wedding so much that I am now doing something I have thought about for many years and starting up my own event planning business to service Western Australia brides. “flights of fancy by kristy” will be a boutique event planning business with a focus on intimate, personal and unique weddings and private events in Western Australia. We will provide a range of services, from assistance with theme and budget to vendor recommendations and liaison, to day-of coordination and everything in between, tailoring packages to suit clients’ needs and budgets.  There are so many amazing vendors in WA, and I can’t wait to share my knowledge of those vendors with others!  I really enjoyed making our wedding unique and a true reflection of both of our personalities and tastes and I hope that through my business I can encourage and assist other couples to do the same.

I had a really hard time deciding whether or not to wear my glasses. I wear glasses all the time and don’t cope very well with contact lenses, but I did consider wearing them just for the ceremony and photos. I have always hated wearing glasses and just felt that a bride shouldn’t wear glasses! Daniel wanted me to wear them – he said that they were part of me and that it would freak him out if I came down the aisle without them! I spent a lot of time googling images of brides wearing glasses and reading discussion forums on the topic, which only confused me more! In the end, I am glad that I chose to wear them. I was comfortable and looked like me! I did buy some new ones for the occasion from Karen Millen.

The morning of the wedding was beautiful but about an hour before the ceremony was due to start it started pouring with rain. Our ceremony was all set up out in the open and had to be moved at the last minute so wasn’t exactly how it was meant to be, but it was still beautiful. After the ceremony, our guests enjoyed pre-dinner drinks and canapés while the bridal party went for photos. The plan was for us to all go down to the river and have a picnic under this beautiful big tree that I had spotted in some of Samm’s previous photo shoots. Unfortunately the wet weather prevented that from happening so instead we set up our picnic under the front verandah of the hotel! Those things aside, we had an incredible day and I think what was even more special was the week leading up to the wedding when I had my hens weekend away, Daniel had his bucks day, and we had family and friends visiting from interstate and overseas.  It was undoubtedly the best week of our lives, matched only by the week after that when we spent our honeymoon at a beautiful resort in the Maldives!

From the bride… A few years ago, I met my husband playing drums in a band somewhere in Texas, and subsequently relocated to NYC to study fashion design. He moved (followed me, if we’re being honest) up to the Northeast to attend graduate school in Boston which shortened the distance between us, and for the next couple years, we boarded acela trains and bolt buses until we could be together in Brooklyn after graduating. A job offer moved us back home to Dallas, where Adam proposed at the end of a long cross country drive. We immediately planned a wedding that would reflect our tastes and heritage, and we had a ton of fun doing so. I had picked out a frothy, ivory Vera Wang gown in New Orleans, and soon after, I visited my grandmother on the way home who showed me her little vintage, tea-length dress she was married in over 50 years ago. She actually had the $18 receipt, which I saw with my own eyes! I knew I had to incorporate it, so I planned to wear it during the reception. Somehow she was convinced I was altering it completely to make it more modern, but I surprised her at the wedding with nothing changed whatsoever — not even the waist was taken in, which was unbelievable.

Another amazing part of the day were the flowers, done by Alicia and Adam Rico of Bows and Arrows. The bridesmaids carried little bundles of succulents and anemones, which balanced out my ridiculously impressive bouquet of tallandsia, zerographica and succulents, which were inspired from a bouquet I saw on the cover of a German bridal magazine called Brud.

We had a friend’s string quartet play during the processional, outside on the most perfect October day ever. We didn’t even need all the handmade program fans (inspired by Rifle Paper Co.) my mother and I glued together the week prior. The lovely ring bearer bowl was made by fellow Texan creative Paloma’s Nest, which caused a funny scene when the best man had to bite the rings off with his teeth…
Immediately after exchanging beautiful vows before our family and friends (and putting God above all else), we headed inside the giant warehouse loft to dance to Van Morrison and eat as much BBQ as we could. Our dear friend made a gorgeous croquembouche cake (which had to be remade hours before due to a not-so-hilarious catastrophe with a lab puppy) which we also paired with homemade pies and cobblers on the dessert table. Finally, our guests saw us off in my Dad’s blue 1950′s pickup truck, which we drove back to the Belmont Hotel and swapped into our VW for our cross country drive to San Francisco for our honeymoon. The end!

From the Bride… After getting in engaged in Thailand on January 18 2010, just days before my 21st birthday, we started to plan our dream wedding, taking our time and not rushing anything. It is all of the small details which matter to me, so I wanted to make sure that things were perfect.

Our 3 bridesmaids were my 3 sisters, with 1 flying from Ireland for the wedding. Our 4 groomsmen were Steve’s best friends and our flower girls and page boys are all nephews and nieces.

Our wedding was a traditional Serbian Orthodox ceremony (I converted to Orthodox for Steven 1 month before the wedding) with the reception having both the cultures (Australian and Serbian-Australian) involved. There was a traditional pre-ceremony party where the bride and groom saw all of the guests (but not each other) and celebrated by drinking, eating and dancing. The pre-ceremony party also includes the bartering of the bride, where the groom’s side has to “buy” the bride from her brothers before she can leave for the ceremony. Only once an appropriate amount has been reached, can they bride make her way to the church ceremony.

I changed my wedding dress look 3 times, but it was all one base dress with other elements added, much to my dress makers chagrin.

Our ceremony was predominately in Serbian and was very traditional. Our church does not have pews, so it included all of our 190 guests standing for the 45 – 60 minutes. We had our hands tied together with a silk sash, and wore crowns which were blessed by the church. As most things in the orthodox church are done 3 times (father, son, holy ghost) we had our rings placed on our fingers 3 times, walked around the altar 3 times and even did 3 impromptu kisses at the end!

Although our reception was a formal event, we wanted it to be relaxed and fun so we had things like a photobooth and lolly bar to make things more chilled for our guests. The main thing was that we wanted people to have fun.

From the Bride…Steve and I met in Brisbane at our friends’ home party. Steve proposed me along the Brisbane River just after we celebrated my 30th birthday at the hotel where we had an outside ceremony by the river. Since then, I have been inspired by Style Me Pretty (I am (and will be) enjoying being a SMP blogger after our wedding was over!).

After seeing many wonderful ideas, I realized that one of the most important things was to infuse my culture, Japanese tastes. I always love beautiful Japanese origami and Chiyogami papers (papers of different patterns and color layers). To reflect Japanese culture using origami papers, we started a 10-month BIG & FUN DIY project – fold 1000 colorful cranes and put them through strings. In Japan, it is said that holding 1000 cranes makes our wish come true (happy and long marriage).Thanks to my mum and friends, we could completely finish just few weeks before the wedding. With the help of our planner, they were hung at the pre-drinks space. Guests had a fun time taking photos with the poraloid camera for the guest book in front of our proudly made 1000 cranes.We also made Chiyogami paper cranes for each guest on their napkin. As bon bons, we prepared macaroons filling the wooden Sake Box that was tied with Japanese patterned ribbons sourced from Japan and a name tag on each one.

Because of various colors of cranes, we had softy-pastel colored spring flowers such as ranunculus, david austin, blushing bride and cherry blossoms. It was also important for us to incorporate with vintage chic style and personal touches. We were lucky enough to meet talented styling planners and vendors who introduced vintage vases, centerpieces, birdcages, tealight bowls, seating charts, welcome board and our “MUST ITEM” gorgeous chandelier. They were all incorporated in the reception restaurant. Big thanks to our photographer Karen, we could add a personal touch on table numbers of engagement portraits. Since we saw her photos, we could not think about other photographers. Her natural and delightful photos remind us a beautiful wedding and we enjoy seeing wedding photos every day!

We just had an extremely enjoyable time from the beginning of the wedding plan to the end of the wedding night. We could not be happier to celebrate this perfect day without families and friends coming from different destinations. Without lots of love, happiness, laugh, dance and great food, we could not have the perfect day what we exactly expected. The beautiful day just reflected two of us – wonderful memory forever.

From the Bride…May 5, 2007 was a chance meeting of two avid college football fans, in Auburn, Alabama. Gary and I were both visiting for the weekend. Starting with our love of college football, Gary and I talked for hours, finding many additional interests and experiences in common. Over the coming months, a geographical separation not withstanding, we grew closer, and a romance blossomed. We soon discovered our mutual love all things Southern, and most especially, Southern beaches. We had our first “official” date over Memorial weekend, and once we became engaged, knew that our wedding had to be that weekend. After seriously dating for a little over two and a half years, I was very ready to be engaged.  On December 17, 2009, Gary had taken me to dinner at one of my favorite restaurants, and we had planned to watch a Christmas movie back at my apartment after. Unknown to me, Gary had hidden the ring in the family room earlier in the day. When we arrived from dinner, he got down on one knee and pulled out the ring. I was so surprised, and very excited to finally say “yes”!

After visiting several potential wedding venues, I knew that Carillon Beach, Florida was “the place.” Gary and I love the Gulf Coast, and wanted a location where friends and family would be able to enjoy the beach. When I walked into the Meeting House, I became teary eyed and knew that we had found our perfect venue. Starting at age 13, I have been collecting wedding magazines. I have always admired the beautiful flowers, picturesque settings, and sweet romantic details. To put it lightly, I had a very specific vision in mind with pages of torn out magazines as the example. Victoria & Avis at Carillon Weddings were beyond helpful. The vendors executed my vision better that imagined (and everything was even more beautiful than the magazine pictures!) Vue Photography and Diva Productions captured our day perfectly.

The planning process was fun, and stress- free. I loved our traditional Anglican vows. Our officiant was the father of a long-time fellow dancer, so it was very special to have him marry us. The scripture passages were from Song of Solomon, and I Corinthians 13: 1-13. We both just loved what the passage said about love- how a mature love puts the other ahead of oneself and is patient and kind.  His reading of this passage said everything about the way we want our love to endure, and the way we want to act toward each other.  Our priest reminded us that we must care about others in our world as well. And saying The Lord’s Prayer was so special to me because I really contemplated each line, and realized the powerful words it contains. As we walked out of the chapel as Mr. and Mrs., the Battle Hymn of the Republic was played as a homage to our SEC schools- Auburn and Georgia.

Gary and I loved all the food at the reception, but the martini glasses of fizzled shrimp and grits were our favorite. Being a dancer and having many of my ballerina friends in attendance, we danced the night away. I loved all of the gorgeous flowers, and the spectacular wedding cake. My only disappointment of the night was having to cut apart such a magnificent creation! The evening was everything that we had hoped it would be, and more. As we were whisked away on a golf cart, we both said the night was the perfect way to begin happily ever after.

From the photographer…Kim & Brian’s wedding was an elegant affair held at the historic Biltmore Ballrooms in Atlanta, Georgia.  Their beautiful church ceremony was followed by a trolley ride with the bridal party to the reception.  Their guests were greeted with a cocktail hour in the lobby with lounge areas, drinks and appetizers.  Before being ushered into the historic ballroom, guests passed the escort card table full of “match”-sticks with flags displaying their table numbers.  A sweet sign read, “We found our match, now you find yours!”.  The table also displayed an initial logo of “KB”, engagement photos and a display of floral arrangements and candles.  The elegant ballroom with it’s carved plasterwork ceiling doesn’t need much in the way of extra decor, but Kim & Brian kept it simple and modern.  A palette of whites including blush and ivory were the centerpiece of the reception scheme.  Beautiful white and ivory arrangements in silver vessels adorned most tables, while the head table held elegant sprays of flowers in tall, clear vases.  Candles, candles, candles were everywhere and really added to the ambiance of the room as well as the professional lighting that lit the old columns and intricately carved ceiling.  Guests were greeted at each placesetting with a favor of chocolates in a box with a wax seal displaying the logo initials of Kim & Brian.  They also received a “thank-you” note along with their menu card from the couple.  After dinner, guests partied on the dancefloor and enjoyed a late-night snack before the couple was ushered out by the Florida State fight song to their awaiting Rolls Royce getaway car.

From the Bride… I have a “life list” of all of the things I want to do in my lifetime, and Myles takes great pride in helping me cross things off. During a trip to Las Vegas, he told me he had a surprise for me. We were picked up by a driver and taken to a small airport where there was a helicopter waiting. The helicopter took us over the Grand Canyon and we landed on an inside ledge on an Indian reservation for lunch. I was so excited to have crossed 2 things off of my life list (Grand Canyon and helicopter ride) that I had no idea what was coming next!! We were sitting on the side of a cliff and he asked me to marry him. I still cannot remember any of the words he said, because everything got very cloudy, but I did manage to say yes!

Myles’ favorite baseball player is Ryne Sandberg, a Hall of Fame player that played for the Cubs when he was little. He used to watch him play with his Dad, who passed away 2 years ago from complications of lung cancer. I knew how special he was to the two of them, and I needed a way to honor and remember the man who is responsible for making Myles the man and father he is today. I started calling, emailing, and sending letters a year before the wedding in an attempt to get in touch with Ryne. I found out he had just been hired as the manager of a minor league team in Philadelphia. I sent him a letter and a wedding invitation to the new ballpark (just in case!).  To my surprise, I came home one day to find a large box from Ryne himself, with an autographed gift to give my sweet groom on our wedding day. It meant and means the world to him, and I hope it made his Dad smile, too.  My wedding day gift was a beautiful charm bracelet. He told me that for each anniversary he will buy a charm to represent something special we did or experienced that year.

Since we were planning from out of town, we actually scouted our “First Look” location while on a ski trip in February. The ground was covered in snow, but the trees were tall and beautiful and everything we wanted. When we arrived for pictures, we were amused to find out we had actually picked a popular frisbee golf course!! We were dodging frisbees through the bridesmaid and groomsmen photos. Luckily, my cousin Jessica has quick reflexes, because she dodged a close one that could have left her with a large bruise across her forehead just minutes before the ceremony!

The sash I wore was made by my mother. She used flowers from a bridal hair comb and stitched them to the sash. The hair piece is actually an upside down blusher. I loved the look of it originally, but after wearing it for my hair trial.. I decided to flip it because it bothered me being in my face for such a long period of time.

I made the aisle chair decor by folding strips of scrapbook paper like a fan and gluing it together with hot glue! Myles hand stamped/varnished/bowed all of the bridesmaid hangars! I made the boutonnieres from some faux succulents and blueberries from the local craft store. I made the Happily Ever After sign using the lid to an old planter from our backyard. I traced the letters onto it with stencils, and then used a woodburning pen to fill it in. It was my first time to use the pen, and it was really easy! We had handkerchiefs hand embroidered for my mother, Myles’ mother, and my Grandmother.

From Cinecraft Australia… Alanna’s passion for art and detail meant this wedding film was going to be different.  Different in a good way. Her wish was for us to capture all the fine details along with all the effort that went into the preparation of hand made decorations/settings which created a warm rustic atmosphere (despite a bit of rain before the ceremony). We set out to capture ‘the behind the scenes’ of all the preparation as well as the ceremony itself. We had a blast working with Emily from White Room Events who was enthusiastic to help us capture the right shot despite her very busy schedule. In the end, we’ve produced a very personal film of a very beautiful wedding that is benchmark of our work. Cinematographers on duty that day were: Kamil Rauf, Lukasz Bebnowski and Gabriel Rivera.
