From the Bride… When Christopher and I talked about our wedding we were certain about some things from the beginning. We wanted the ceremony to take place outside surrounded by the mountains where we live and fell in love. We also wanted not only our wedding party to stand with us during the ceremony but also our friends and family. So everyone gathered around us, standing, during the ceremony. We did have seating for people who couldn’t physically stand, but everyone else gathered closely around us, we wanted it to be as intimate as possible. Our vows were my favorite part of the whole day. Christopher and I wrote our vows together. We tried to keep them strong, simple, and directly meaningful to us.

The cake table was a compilation of pound cakes made by some very special women. Christopher doesn’t really care for sweets but he loves a good homemade pound cake, so the decision to not have a cake was easy. From mothers and godmothers to past teachers and longtime family friends we had around fifteen pound cakes made with love. All the bottles and tins used for the centerpieces were collected by Christopher and I over our year-long engagement. The night of the engagement we had a house fire. Some of my bridesmaids were visiting us that weekend so to get my mind off the fire and bring me back to the exciting engagement they took me shopping. We went to this beautiful antique store down the road and we immediately decided my color scheme and they bought us the first few pieces for our wedding collection. After that, Christopher and I had so much fun visiting flea markets, yard sales and thrift stores in search of center pieces. Half of the bottles and things were from our mother’s, aunt’s, grandmother’s and my maid of honor’s homes. The flowers were from a local nursery called Shady Grove. Christopher and I met them one Sunday at the farmers’ market and found out they would provide us with buckets full of seasonal wildflowers. One of my mother’s best friends is a florist. He came up for the wedding and him and mom made the most beautiful centerpieces and bouquets for us. He took my ideas and made them more beautiful than I could of ever wanted. The sign that stood outside the pavilion was hand made by the father of the groom.

When guests arrived they were greeted with the sounds of sweet bluegrass compliments of a family member’s band. There was also fresh lemonade served in mason jars with old-timey straws. The father of the groom also made a tree stump mimicking our RSVP cards. He came to us months before the wedding and said that he had this great idea. The old tree in front of their home had been struck by lightning and had been dead for years. He had been meaning to cut it down. He chopped it, carved it and mounted it beautifully. We got to see it for the first time the day of the wedding, and it was a beautiful surprise. Over the course of the engagement, I collected all sorts of ribbon and lace with help from the mother of the groom for the photo booth backdrop. My mother and I crafted it the week of the wedding. All the props were donated from both sides of the family. The suitcase they were stuffed in is an antique from the groom’s side. The lanterns that sat on the mantel were all part of one of the groom’s uncle’s personal collection. He collects antique lanterns and gets them working again. He set them all up and lit them for us the day of. One of our dearest friends directed the wedding. Her gift to us was the candy bar. We had small “L” monogrammed bags for people to fill with candy and take home with them. She picked out all the candy and brought in her own jars to fill them with. Guests were also offered hankies for their tears of joy. Not one was left behind! I gave all my bridesmaids actual vintage hankies that I hand selected at different flea markets. But 250 people calls for a ton of hankies so I found them off eBay, and they were vintage replicas … still beautiful though. The tables were covered in burlap and lavender. I am a graphic designer so I designed and created all the paper goods we used, from the invitations to the straw flags. One of my very talented bridesmaids sang the song for our first dance. September 11th, our wedding date, was a special day because it is the groom’s parents wedding anniversary. We are honored they were so happy to share this day with us. It made they day extra special.

From the bride… There are a few things Kyle and I love most in the world: good friends, family, food, North Carolina and the mountains. We wanted our wedding to be an event that celebrated our love for one another while sharing the things we love best with our closest friends and families. When we drove up the long gravel driveway to the event barn and field at Claxton Farm, the venue search was over before it really began. Hugged by the mountains and secluded from everyday life, this venue was the perfect place to share our wedding with those most important to us.

Our vendors took care of all the big stuff, but we wanted to have a hand in the wedding as well, so we got to work buying, borrowing, and making all the small details for the wedding. The charger plates were purchased second-hand, and I painted them a charcoal gray to match our color scheme. I made all the table numbers, and we printed and stamped the place cards. The favors were home-brewed beer by Kyle and a friend, and we also had fig, peach, and pear preserves that my grandmother made. We also designed and printed all the labels for the beer bottles and jars of preserves. We used the cake knife Kyle’s grandmother offered for us to use that has been used at her family’s weddings for well over 100 years. All the signs were either handmade, borrowed, or written on old windows we found on Craigslist. The guest book was bought from Etsy and we made luminaries to line the pathways with. I even cut all the lace off the bottom of my mother’s wedding dress and had it sewn onto my veil. When Claxton Farm put all our details together with the hard work of our vendors, it was exactly what we had hoped it would be. A combination of old and new, natural and elegant, and we felt it was a step away from the traditionally elegant weddings we had recently been to.

Despite a little rain, the day was perfect. There were no nerves, no worries, just complete and total bliss.  I couldn’t wait to walk down the aisle and see Kyle. Our ceremony was written/assembled 100% by us. The readings were selected to represent our feelings on love and marriage, the overall tone was what we wanted to share with our guests, and we wrote our own vows. There were a few raindrops during the ceremony, but right before the end, the sun peeked out from the clouds. It was one of those perfect moments, the kind of thing you won’t forget. The evening proceeded with dinner, socializing, and finished up with lots of dancing. The team at Claxton Farm stoked up the fire and before we knew it, the night was over and we were off. It’s true what they say about your wedding flying by.

The day I got engaged was the day I started planning our wedding! Okay not really… I had been planning since the day we met! But I started REALLY planning the day we got engaged. We both knew that we wanted to get married on the beach and have a destination wedding where we could enjoy a few days with our friends and family. Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina seemed like the perfect spot and Knots Landing was the perfect fit for what we wanted on our big day. I booked Knots Landing two months after we got engaged and then the countdown began.

I loved everything about our wedding because it was planned with such love and every small detail was handcrafted. My mom spent almost two years making all of our shell centerpieces, shell champagne flute favors – pretty much anything that you see with shells she made with shells she found on North Carolina beaches! The wooden signs (for the cocktail and reception) were made by Eric & I a few days before the wedding, which we still have and love!

Our family’s love and support is what made this special day even possible. Without them we wouldn’t have been able to pull off such an incredible wedding…and without Life Stage Films we wouldn’t be able to look back at all of these things that made our day so incredible!

From the Bride…Jason and I were married on August 6th in Greensboro, NC. Jason and I were both raised in NC and went to college together at the University of North Carolina, but it took a move to Atlanta for us to cross paths. We met six years ago through our respective roommates at the time (who are now married and expecting), but due to other relationships, we remained very good friends. Although we were “just friends”, we would still joke about getting married someday. Finally, last February, everything fell in to place and within weeks I knew he would be my husband.

Our wedding was truly wonderful; I could not imagine anything better. We wanted a “fun” wedding, and I think we achieved just that. I have always wanted an outdoor wedding, but North Carolina weather makes an outdoor summer wedding somewhat difficult. We took a little bit of a risk and decided to plan an outdoor ceremony with an indoor reception. Once we visited Grandover and I saw the outdoor ceremony area, I knew it was the place.

The week of the wedding was unseasonably cool, with forecasted rain for the weekend. I was devastated. On our wedding morning, I woke up to gray skies and very humid air. As the day progressed the sun came out and everything was set up outside. Unbeknownst to me (I think I was the only one not checking the weather that day), an afternoon storm was heading our way. My bridesmaids and I walked outside around 5:15 to take pictures to find storm clouds and heavy wind. There are even pictures of us running inside as the rain is starting. We waited out the rain (throw in a minor meltdown by myself), and the rain stopped at 6:00. The chairs are wiped down by our sweet groomsmen and the wedding started only five minutes late. My husband jokes that he became a master at reading the weather radar that day, as people were tracking the storms all day to determine if an outdoor wedding was possible. As my father said in his toast, the day was just like a marriage: its not always easy, your plans may be changed, and you may have to bear a storm or two, but its the love that makes it perfect.

We wanted a classic Southern wedding, while incorporating some of ourselves. Our colors were pewter, peach and ivory, so our signature drink was the peach mojito. The bridesmaids wore pewter Alfred Sung dresses, with peach shoes (although they look pink the the pictures). Their bouquets were bunches of white hydrangeas, and each one had a different brooch that I found at antique stores that the bridesmaids could keep after the wedding. Jason proposed last September after an Avett Brothers concert with a concert poster signed by the entire band, asking me to “say yes to Jason’s question”. To honor this, we made a concert poster for our wedding and had our guests sign it instead of a guest book. We now have both posters framed in our home. My sweet mother made 150 ribbon streamers in peach and pewter for our send off and helped me make all of the S’more favors and welcome bags for the hotel rooms. We were so lucky to have Elissa Keno, our wedding weekend coordinator, to ensure everything went exactly as planned, without us having to worry about it. It was great to be able to to relax all day of the wedding and not have to think about the things going on behind the scenes.

It really was a perfect day, and now I have a perfect husband to share my life. Jason played a very active role in our wedding planning, down to spreadsheets and Chivari chairs. Throughout our ten month engagement, he always said he would do whatever he could to make sure I had the wedding of my dreams. As I type this, he just said to me: “I think it would mean just as much to me as it would to you if our wedding was on Style me Pretty”. I am one lucky girl.

Ben and I met at the hospital where we both work and started dating shortly after.  After a wonderful two years together Ben proposed and we decided to have our wedding in my hometown of Salisbury, North Carolina.

Our ceremony was held at First United Methodist Church and it could not have been more perfect.  The wedding service was traditional with absolutely beautiful music and solos.  During the service rain fell outside, only to stop and result in a beautiful rainbow shortly after the ceremony was over.  This solidified something I already knew, my father, who has passed away, was definitely there in spirit.

The reception was held at the Historic Train Depot, also in Salisbury. I dreamed of a vintage, southern reception, inspired by my mother’s back porch where she keeps potted plants in abundance.  I love the look of the overflowing pots and decided I needed to have them everywhere, and that is just what we did.  The color palette was neutral with ivories, creams, and lace overlays, with a pop of color added with wildflowers.  My mother and I collected vintage vases, votives and other “knick knacks” throughout the engagement to complete the look.

Kailey with A Southern Soirée did an amazing job filling the overwhelming large venue, paying special attention to all of the details I envisioned.  Two of my favorites were the guest book, which was a vintage file box filled with cards for guests to leave us a sweet note, and the small white wire tables that served as children’s tables with arts and crafts!

A Krispy Kreme doughnut bar was set up to serve as the favors.  This was unique to Ben and I since he is from the home of Krispy Kreme, Winston Salem, North Carolina. Also, Krispy Kreme recently started making cheerwine filled doughnuts, and since the Cheerwine company was founded in Salisbury, this made the perfect tribute to both of our hometowns.

Also, I am very blessed to have a genus artist/illustrator as a new sister in law!  She did an amazing job designing the save the dates that tied into the menu card design.  I loved this personal touch on our wedding day. The band Rubberband kept the energy at the reception going well into the night.  They kept the guests entertained and the dance floor full!  A bride’s dream! The day was truly amazing and one I hope not just myself but others will remember for a lifetime!

From the Bride…Chris and I met in Pittsburgh in 2002 while working in the same hospital. We had a lovely courtship for 9 years before deciding to finally get married!  We chose to have our own private, intimate ceremony at Pebble Beach this past May. Pebble Beach is a special, sentimental place for us….we had taken our first vacation there together, and have such very fond memories.  We always thought that it would be a wonderful, beautiful place to be married some day. We married on 5/5/11 with the ceremony taking place on the lawn by the 18th green at The Lodge at Pebble Beach, overlooking the beautiful Pacific.  Absolutely breathtaking!

We still wanted to be able to celebrate our marriage with family and friends and found Bald Head Island to be the perfect place. Our vision was to have a small intimate beach side reception and vacation. We found Mr. Wisner’s home, La Vita Bruta and it perfectly reflected this vision, as well as represent us.  It’s a more comfortable and relaxing place, and we really wanted our guests to feel at home, rather than celebrate in a more formal-like setting.  Kim Fisher really captured our vision and taste with all of her beautiful designs and decor.  I had a wonderful experience planning it all with her and putting this simply elegant beach side vision into place for our vow renewal ceremony and reception. The Martime Market was also a great fit for us. We LOVE food and this was extremely important to us to have a menu with tasteful, flavorful, quality food (and we knew that our guests would expect this from us, knowing that we are food snobs).  We wanted a menu that was a combination of coastal and southern flavors. MM was amazing–staff and food!!  They definitely provided us with exactly what we had asked, and hoped for…outstanding food and service.

We wanted our guests to take something away with them so I was trying to come up with a unique idea for some time as to what kind of wedding favors we wanted to have for our guests.  I wanted something that not only tied in with our beachside reception theme, but also something that was representative of us.  All of our family and friends know that we are foodies, and love to cook!  I discovered the idea of using sea salts, and thought this would be just perfect. I found exactly what I wanted at Williams Sonoma, and loved the variety of flavors that we could share with our guests.  We thought they would be great, and guests may remember us and our day each time they used them at home while cooking/eating a delicious meal.

From the Bride…In the midst of planning my wedding I turned to your site for inspiration, excitement and information almost on a daily basis.  Now that I am a newly-wed I am dying to share all of the details, thought and background that inspired our wedding and made it the absolutely most perfect day for us!

These are the little details, themes and inspiration we gathered to make our wedding what it turned out to be: Both Austin and I grew up in Texas and happened to meet there, therefore we wanted to have an underlying Southern theme with a nod to Texas.  We made sure to incorporate this throughout the wedding in all of our designs, flowers, traditions, etc.  For instance, my bridesmaids all carried yellow roses to represent the yellow rose of Texas.  Keeping with this southern theme we decided to have all Southern food at our wedding, including a biscuit bar, make your own shrimp & grits stations, sweet potato fries; we even had our wedding our guests throw black eyed peas at us for good luck and again to touch on the Southern theme. All of our groomsmen wore seersucker ties and even our dog, Miller wore a matching seersucker bow tie.  All designs were put together by Salt Harbor Designs based on lifetime events that Austin and I encountered and pieces of Southern charm that affected our lives in one way or another.  From the custom-designed program fans, napkins, food station signs, drink menu which was aptly named for numerous of our life events: places we have lived, the place we met at or our college alma maters.  To top off the southern charm & roots, one of our wedding guests is a member of the Texas State Senate and gave us a Texas State Resolution signed & passed by the Senate for our marriage that we had framed and displayed at the wedding.

Besides the “Southern themes” we also incorporated mementos from our family that made our day unique and special to us.  For instance, my bouquet had my step-mother’s perfume bottle given to her by my dad on one of their 1st dates, my recently passed grandmother’s brooch and my great-grandmother’s handkerchief.  My mom hand-made the ring pillow and was made from her old wedding dress and lace my great-grandmother gave to her.  Additionally, Austin’s Rolex was given to him by his late father and was originally from the 60s; it was broken and unable to be worn- I gave him it fixed and restored as his wedding present.  He was so surprised!  Our golf cart was decorated with a “Just Married” sign of burlap (so appropriate again for the Southern theme) that one of my best friend’s and bridesmaids made for me as a present for our wedding.

One of my DIY projects: our vendor who printed our save the dates printed them in the wrong size and gave us them for whatever we wanted to do with them.  I decided to make these into cone shapes and fill them with black eyed peas for our guests to throw at us for good luck at the end of the night- another southern themed touch we added.  Finally, I custom designed my dress and had a local wedding dress tailor make it into my perfect vision. There are many more details that went into planning our wedding. We hope you have as much fun reading about and looking at pictures of our wedding as we did planning it!

After being able to travel extensively over the years, I slowly began to realize my hometown Charlotte is very unique. It still has the appeal of Southern charm, but with a lot of the perks of a bigger city, including great venues for weddings.  My husband and I knew we wanted an outdoor wedding, and after browsing online for possibilities, Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden seemed like the perfect place. As soon as we saw it in person, we knew that this was the venue for us. The White Garden was large enough for all of our guests, but the fact it was enclosed gave the space a very intimate air.

Most of the inspiration came from the venue itself. Being designers, my mother and I found great joy throughout the planning process, setting out to create that perfect balance of décor- giving a subtle nod to times past, without over-doing it and forcing a theme. Images of 19th century English conservatories, vintage botanical illustrations, and apothecary label typographies constantly drove our decisions.

For the ceremony, we used mainly white hydrangeas and lilies. The whole garden was white and green- and we introduced color through the bridesmaids’ dresses, the men’s suits, and the bouquets. When it came to wedding gowns, I was originally interested in Jenny Packham’s signature sheath dresses, reminiscent of bygone eras with her intricate beading. After trying some on, I felt they were more fit for the red carpet than the aisle. My mother-in-law suggested I try on Jenny Packham’s Minerva gown, which had layer upon layer of ivory silk tulle- so light and comfortable! It was perfect for the garden, and I finally felt like a bride.

For the centerpieces we bought large apothecary glass jars and planted silk lady slipper and cymbidium orchids with moss. We chose a navy blue satin for the table linens, and placed the jars on a moss mats in the center of each table. We ordered Jaguar Pink Mokara Orchids from Thailand, and floated each stem in glass cylinders to add some color to the centerpieces. We also decided to give our guests a taste of the South with spiked Arnold Palmers for cocktail hour, and Deep Fried Peanuts for favors.

My favorite part of the planning process though, was collaborating with my husband to design our invitations and programs. We looked to old pharmacy and apothecary labels for guidance, and a friend letterpressed them with his old Vandercook Press.

It is so satisfying to look back and consider how each detail combined to perfectly reflect our desires for this special day. I only wish it could have lasted longer!
