From the bride… My hubby Tim and I met 12 years ago at college in Indiana. We were just friends though. Fast forward a decade and a little thing called Facebook brought us together. He was in San Diego and I was in L.A., and after I took a weekend trip down to SD to see my old friend and sparks surprisingly flew between us, I knew I was toast. We got engaged after alternately driving every single weekend to one another for almost two years. And when it came time to pick a destination, we instantly chose the white, sugar sand beaches of Anna Maria Island in Florida.  My family uprooted there when I was 16, and this charming little island community holds such a special place in my heart.

Living in LA and planning a wedding in Florida was a challenge, but a fun one.  First thing we did was find a local coordinator, who turned out to be AJ Latteri at The Loft 5.  For over a year, she listened carefully to my vision, which was beachy-meets-Anthropologie, and we lobbed pictures back and forth of inspiration from the web and others’ weddings. She recommended our wedding location, the Limefish House, a rental beach house whose owners graciously allow weddings to be held there. I really wanted every guest to feel they had stepped into a mini vacation for the long weekend, and I wanted them to leave loving Florida like we do. The beach house was totally transformed into a romantic, whimsical and tranquil beach spot, courtesy of AJ, her team and the geniuses behind a new local Island design and wedding planning firm called Enna/Anne. These three local 20-somethings — Kyle, Lenna and Jeanne — are floral and design phenoms. They did everything from designing my invites and creating our photo booth to painstakingly organizing our flowers and other design elements.

For the bridesmaids, I chose a different Rachel Pally dress for each (8 girls total!).  I wanted their dresses to look like colors you’d see in a Florida sunset. At the end of the night, a trolley picked up all the guests wanting to keep the party going and dropped us off at a bar at the end of the Island. We had pizzas delivered there, and everyone danced and mingled with locals for the rest of the night! If I could give brides advice, it would be be to start looking now for unique finds to incorporate on your big day. My mom scoured local Goodwill’s and thrift stores for a year, collecting various vases made of beach glass, which we peppered around the house. And don’t be afraid to mix and match different elements — i.e. beachy/rustic/modern/traditional.  It’ll all come together in the end and have a vibe that’s different and unique.

From the bride… It was hard for me to articulate one “vision.”  As a designer, I felt a lot of pressure for it to be perfect and beautiful, but I also knew that my venue was amazing and powerful on its own so I wanted to build around that. I picked flowers, linens and bridesmaids dresses to support the scenery. I also wanted it to feel glamorous but approachable to all of our guests. I think there is something to be said for hiring people who LOVE what they do. We had 3 vendors that made the day.  Our caterer was so on top of it … the execution was perfect and the food was to die for.  Our florist is so talented; I only gave her my color preferences and left the flower selections up to her.  And finally our photographer was so easy to work with. James and I are not comfortable being photographed, and they made it so easy for us. Also, I don’t like cakes that look inedible. My sister loves to bake so I had her make the cake and I know I am not the only one who thinks it was the most delicious wedding cake ever.

I loved all the dancing! I was so exhausted halfway into the wedding if I hadn’t cut loose I would have dropped to the ground of fatigue. For the final dance, everyone surrounded James and I, holding hands with one another, and crushed us in the biggest dog pile hug ever at the end. There was so much love in the air, it was incredible.

From the bride… The Montauk Club is such an incredible relic of old New York.  We were so drawn to the architecture and humble details of the space, and it seemed that once we decided on the venue, all other aspects of our planning easily fell into order, inspired by the building’s aesthetics.

Milton and I are from different family backgrounds — his family is from southern Alabama, and mine is from Massachusetts. Thinking of how we were bringing our families together, we were inspired to incorporate some elements of our families’ histories into the wedding and décor. We collected our parents’ and grandparents’ wedding photos and framed them for display in the lobby. (My grandmother only had four photographs from her wedding in 1950 because their photographer forgot to load his camera, and these were the first time her snapshots were scanned, enlarged and framed!) Additionally, each table was a combination of family objects: lace from Milton’s mother’s family was paired with a collection of books that were from my father’s great grandfather’s lending library. Rebecca Shepherd created marvelous still lifes with these objects, adding her collection of vintage bottles and vases with poppies and tulips. The table numbers were old German playing cards with a beautiful design that we incorporated into our stationery. We decided to do our own invitations by hand — the text was a combination of a 1940s Smith-Corona typewriter that we have bought together and a script font based on Jane Austen’s handwriting. We had rubber stamps made and hand-stamped each invitation over the course of a long evening watching “Some Like it Hot,” “To Have and Have Not” and “Bringing Up Baby.”

Overall, we had the most amazing vendors who were willing to collaborate with us, work with our ideas, and be incredibly creative. Penguin Music preformed the most wonderful guitar/cello rendition of John Lennon’s “Dear Yoko” upon our request. The Montauk Club’s Chef Mark Usewicz’s phenomenal menu pleased our mix of meat-loving southerners and pescatarian/vegetarian/vegan Brooklynites. Betsy Thorleifson of Nine Cakes worked with us to create four of the most amazing cakes we have ever had: triple citrus (coconut cake layered with orange, lemon, and lime buttercream fillings), red velvet (with both cream cheese buttercream sweetened with white chocolate and a hidden layer of red raspberry buttercream) mint chip (chocolate cake with mint buttercream, mint-infused ganache, and chocolate chips sprinkled throughout ) and “Sweet & Salty Little Turtle” (Valrhona dark chocolate cake with layers of caramel buttercream, sprinkled with toasted pecans and fleur de sel). And finally, Laura of Weddings by Two went so far above and beyond anything we could have hoped for with her remarkable photography. Despite there never being quite enough time that day for all we wished to take in, she managed to capture every moment with style — portraits we will forever be proud of (inspired by John Singer Sargent’s portrait of Madame X and Jacques-Louis David’s portrait of Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier and Marie-Anne-Pierrette Paulze), as well as candid shots that document the day’s most touching and funniest moments perfectly.

From the bride… Ryan and I live in Los Angeles.  When Ryan asked me to marry him in Santa Barbara in March. Soon after, we decided we wanted to have our wedding in my hometown of Miami. I always knew I would get married at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden.  My family has been involved with the Garden for years, my Bat Mitzvah was there, and it’s just a fascinatingly beautiful and unique place.  I fell in love with Jenny’s photography on Style Me Pretty.  Her pictures consistently articulated this youthful bliss, this sense of happily-ever-after, that I just adored.  When a friend of my mother’s told us she had hired Jenny for her own wedding, we knew it was meant to be.  Jenny and her assistant, Shelly, were a dream team.  They laughed with us, snapped more pictures than I thought possible, and made everyone feel so comfortable. 

Ryan’s cousins happily agreed to be the musicians for our ceremony.  They played such interesting music: scores from Forrest Gump and The Princess Bride for the processional, and a totally funky take on “Sign, Sealed, Delivered” for our recessional.  And before the ceremony, as we played cat and mouse with the Florida rain, our talented cousins kept our guests entertained with instrumental versions of old favorites from the Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, and other classic artists.  Ryan’s sister and father sang “You’re All I Need to Get By” during the ceremony, a beautiful wedding tradition in the groom’s family.  Having our family so involved in all of the music really made our ceremony one-of-a-kind and very personal.  

Kitanim did our floral and event design and provided our day-of-coordinators too.  Meredith, the owner, is so sweet and so dedicated to her work.   Meredith and her team at Kitanim took my ideas and suggestions and turned them into a breathtaking reality.  Every detail was better than I could have planned.  I wanted centerpieces with height, but I did not want that height to seem unnatural or forced.  I wanted plenty of green, but I also wanted pink; I was looking for something natural, old-fashioned, but fresh and sweet and lovely.  Each table—complete with its centerpiece, soft burlap linens, and decorative stones, candles, jars and vases —perfectly bonded that mossy, old-garden feel with a sweet, youthful brightness.   (My mom, true to self, spent the summer scooping up all the jars and lanterns on sale at Pottery Barn.) As a midnight snack and a thank you to our guests, we provided fresh oatmeal raisin and chocolate chip cookies, along with little cartons of milk.   After a send-off full of bubbles and laughter, we hopped into the convertible and drove down Old Cutler Road, one of the most scenic routes in Miami, as husband and wife.  It was such a sweet ending to an amazing night.

From Alice of SposiamoVi… In the first half of the 20th century an American couple, Martin and Osa Johnson—from Kansas—captured the public’s imagination through their films and books of adventure in exotic, faraway lands. Martin and Osa Johnson were the inspiration for Kate and Andrew’s wedding celebrated on Saturday 16th July 2011 in the Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera. Kate and Andrew, both from NY, met and fell in love immediately. A few weeks later Kate was flying from a country to another to follow Andrew during his business travels. Years before in one of his many world wide trips Andrew had accidentally stopped in Levanto, a town completely out of the touristic track. From that time the Cinque Terre have captured his heart, with their quaint and colourful atmosphere and relaxing slow flow of time. When they decided to marry, having a destination wedding in the Cinque Terre has been the natural choice.

We met in Levanto in March 2011. Few days after we were working with Andrew and Kate via email to create their amazing wedding. In just four months all the details for the wedding were in place! Andrew and Kate new what they wanted: their vision was to create a casual and informal get together, a family style reception and a touching ceremony performed by their friend Doron.  All the decors and rentals were to reflect the rustic feeling of the place. The 100 guests, coming from all over the world, were hosted by the bride and groom in the hotels and villas in the Cinque Terre and surroundings; their generosity went well beyond, as a symbolic thanks to their wonderful lives, Andrew and Kate decided to give all their wedding gifts to charity. Minivans brought guests to the special ceremony setting: the tip of a panoramic hill above the town where a small chapel honouring the Madonna stands. Here they were welcomed by the stunning views and… some really tasty fresh lemonade! Kate wore her pretty bronze/gold beaded dress, enhancing her femininity and grace. At 5 pm her father awaited to conduct her to her beloved. The ceremony totally reflected Katee’s sweetness; she had taken care of the readings and completely tailored the script to their story. Simply touching!

Kate had secretly ordered a Kate Spade custom-made “I Married Adventure” jewel box that contained the wedding rings to surprise Andrew at the altar. Following the Italian tradition at the end of the ceremony, bride and groom were showered by their guests with rice and petals as a symbol of good luck. Small delicate cones were hung on the guests’ chairs with the Italian classic cheer “Evviva gli sposi!” (hooray for bride and groom!) They then jumped on an antique authentic Italian Fiat 500 that Andrew drove to the town for a great photo session with the talented Julian Kanz, brilliant photographer that has also shot a romantic engagement session for them in May. Their being world travellers was reflected in the type of reception that incorporated a mix of their favourite countries: Italy, Australia and Holland. The local restaurant owner, Luca, provided a great menu and matched Andrew’s favourite wines: Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Amarone, Australian  Shiraz, Australian & New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. The Dutch Grolsch beer perfectly accompanied the BBQ at the end of the evening, definitely a must for a BBQ and Grolsch aficionado like Andrew. The highlight of the cocktails was with no doubt the Italian old-fashioned truck, the famous Ape – Piaggio, offering fried local fresh fish made and served in the cosy garden overlooking the sea. Sydney-based jazz vocalist Glynis (GT Nash) and Dj Cameron brought warmth and energy to the party. Five long tables have been laid out on the terrace of the private estate like in the classical Italian town festivals including the strings of lights around. Natural and soft pastel flowers gently decorated the tables and together with lanterns and aromatic plants added the extra romantic touch. Favours were luggage tag place cards. The night ended with the classical Italian cake and the newlyweds’ first dance.

From the Bride…Most of all, we wanted an evening that reflected who we are. Among many other things, we are book nerds (we met in a literature class in grad school), and as we made various decisions along the way, the book thing became something of a theme– our flowers were made of book pages, our coasters had books stamped on them, our first dance was “The Book of Love” by The Magnetic Fields and our favors were books we’d hand picked for our guests.

We’re also big on eating and traveling, so we wanted our food to reflect our favorite things to eat, both at home and abroad. This resulted in a somewhat eclectic menu of small bites (many featuring our favorite ingredient: pork!), including green curry rice noodles in takeout containers, bacon and pork chop hand pies and a late-night taco truck. We also passed on traditional cake in favor of a donut tower. Finally, we wanted it to be a really fun party– the kind that we’d be excited to attend ourselves– and something a little different than other weddings we’d been to. We felt strongly about not doing a traditional entrance (we did an opening dance together instead of a bride-and-father aisle walk), not doing a seated meal (all the food was passed and there were various tables, chairs, couches and stairs to sit on) and having lots of our friends and family contribute their words to the ceremony and toasts. We wanted everyone to have a great time, and leave feeling like they knew us just a little bit better.

We wanted to get married in San Francisco, because we met here, we live here and the city is very much a part of who we are. We were looking for places that were a little off-beat, would be able to handle a big ol’ cocktail party for around a hundred and fifty people and were excited about our not-quite-traditional wedding vision (i.e., “of course you can pull up a taco truck!”). When we walked in to Ambiance Antiques, our first thought was “do they really let people have parties here?” It is a funky and stunning space, with old furniture everywhere, multiple staircases and hidden nooks and crannies all over. It felt like visiting a rich, eccentric uncle’s house, full of warmth and intrigue and undiscovered surprises. Plus, they were incredibly sweet and easy-going to work with– it was like being invited into their home, and we could actually use all of their gorgeous furniture!

Our ceremony was centered on why we were there, and in our vows we gave each other the reasons we wanted to get married. We had six friends each give a little talk on why they were there, but then our officiant surprised us by reading testimonials from many of our other guests– he had secretly contacted dozens of our other friends to gather their thoughts. It was lovely, and very touching. And then there was when the donut tower came out, the wonderful toasts by our families, my cousin coming up to me  and screaming “Holy (expletive), there’s a taco truck outside!”…and on and on. Our favors ended up being a really wonderful surprise all around. We picked out a used book for each attendee (or attending couple) and inscribed them all. Our guests were really surprised and excited about having a personal and personalized gift. What surprised us was that we’d thought that people would take their books on their way out, but almost everybody grabbed them early on and carried them around the party. People ended up striking up conversations with other folks they didn’t know by asking about their books, so many of our friends got to meet each other that way. It was really cool to watch that unfold.

Jennifer Lynch was our caterer, and her food was whimsical and damn tasty. She really got our vision, was a great help in planning and her waitstaff was thoughtful, smooth and professional. She also makes a mean tower of donuts (which we got from Dynamo Donuts, here in San Francisco). Christopher Lee was our event planner/coordinator/director of all things awesome. Without him we would have been really, really stressed. During the party, we wanted for nothing, and everything went smoothly. He was somehow everywhere at once. Totally amazing. Alison Bank of First Comes Love Photo was our photographer, and she could not have been better. She’s warm, funny and a delightful person to have with you as you’re being prettified. We had so much fun with her, and she really understood the kind of things we were trying to do. She also made us look really good– her pictures are top-notch. Lastly, a special shout-out to Monte’s Tacos and Rudy, the owner. Having carnitas tacos at the end of the reception was a pretty amazing treat, and people are still talking about it!

From the Bride…Nate and I got engaged 7 years after we started dating and I had definitely spent a good portion of the years leading up to the proposal day-dreaming about our future wedding. We always knew we wanted to have an informal wedding that really reflected us as a couple. Some of our favorite memories included hosting dinner parties and playing lawn games with friends in the backyard. We thought that replicating that casual setting on a larger scale with our all-time favorite people would be the perfect way to celebrate our marriage.

We set out searching for an outdoor venue in the Twin Cities, where Nate and I had lived together for almost 5 years before moving west to San Francisco. We ended up taking a gamble and chose a venue sight unseen and are so happy we did! Our venue, Camrose Hill Farm in Stillwater, MN was an absolute stunner. A historic dairy farm owned by florist Cindie Sinclair, Camrose had the picture-perfect rustic charm we were searching for. The venue had an outdoor space for the ceremony, an area to play lawn games, a covered pavilion for the reception and a rustic cabin for the wedding party to get ready in. The property even had a bonfire pit so we could roast s’mores. We were sold!

For dinner, we knew for quite a while that we wanted to serve pizza. Our favorite restaurant in Minneapolis serves wood-fired neapolitan pizzas and we were lucky to find a wonderful caterer, Nate Lane of Thyme to Entertain, to make delicious pizzas just like them for our big day. Farmington Bakery made fantastic pies and cookies and Nate’s mom made “our” pie. (We couldn’t imagine our wedding without one of her creations.)

After a lot of the big pieces were taken care of, we could focus on the little details. Our tastes tend to skew a bit more modern/graphic yet we had chosen a very charming, shabby-chic venue so my challenge was to find a way to merge these aesthetics. (I think our theme ended up being “modern + rustic” if that makes any sense at all!) The Invitations and Save The Dates I’d designed essentially set the stage for our color palette: a simplistic combo of black, grey and a pop of red. From there, everything started to fall into place. (We ultimately had to scrap a lot of my big décor plans due to a limited budget, but thankfully the venue had so much built-in charm that it really didn’t need any decorating. Score!)

We were very lucky to have lots of help, support and participation from good friends and family members in order to pull everything together. Our families put a great deal of effort into assembling decorations and helping with logistics. One of our close friends officiated the ceremony which made it extremely special and personal. (The ceremony ended up being our favorite part of the day!) Another close friend, Caleb Hawley is a talented musician and he and his band totally rocked the reception.

Our laid-back affair came together better than we could have predicted. It was full of emotion, lots of laughter, our favorite people and a number of happy surprises. We never wanted to have a traditional, cookie-cutter day and I’ve been told we were successful. We’re so glad that the fabulous photographer Emily Steffen and videographer Matt Brue of Capture Studios were there to capture the day from beginning to end. Nate and I are excited to be able to relive our big day through images for many, many years to come.

From Lara Kimmerer…Amy & Eddie are two of the most joyful people I’ve had the pleasure to know. There’s a playfulness between them that’s infectious. Amy grew-up in Massachusetts, and Eddie was raised in Singapore. His parents had quite the love story of their own – during a time in Chinese history when couples didn’t often marry for love. I’m sure being raised by two parents who truly respected one another gave Eddie a high standard for a lasting relationship – and he found his match in Amy.

Both have done a good deal of world traveling and each ended up in New York City. The two met at a mutual friend’s party. Eddie immediately took a liking to Amy. Amy was busy enjoying life and being young in the city, and didn’t notice Eddie right away. After a bit of coaxing from Eddie she agreed to go out for a drink. The conversation over drinks led to more conversation, which led to dinner and eventually a marriage!

Their wedding was hosted by Amy’s wonderful parents at their home in Cape Porpoise, ME. Eddie had family travel from all over the world – including his 88 year old father, who came all the way from Singapore! The ceremony was the perfect blend of traditional and personal. They each wrote vows to one another, and Eddie’s Maid of Honor read a selection from The Velveteen Rabbit. Immediately after the ceremony Amy & Eddie took a few minutes for themselves to soak in everything that had just happened. In the meantime, their guests enjoyed an incredible spread from Kitchen Chicks. The presentation was fantastic – and the food was delicious.

The reception was beautifully decorated by Kitchen Chicks and Anniebells. The pink gingham tablecloths and gorgeous flower arrangements came together to create a feeling of casual elegance – perfect for a Maine summer evening. For the guest favors, Amy & Eddie showed their humor, while being serious about their commitment too! Each person was given a bag with candy – as well as Toms of Maine toothpaste and a toothbrush. The note to their guests read, “Marriage is a balance of holding on, and letting go.”

All of the details were beautiful, but their friends and family were what was most important to them that day. Smiles didn’t leave their faces for a moment.The party culminated with sparklers on the front lawn and finished with all of their guests circling around Amy & Eddie for their final dance. Everything was absolutely perfect!
