From the bride… Sean and I knew even before we got engaged that we wanted to be married in October. It’s one of the most beautiful months in St. Louis and means a lot to both of us since that’s the month our story started. We had 16 months to plan, so  we took a “first things first” approach and immediately made a list of the top three tasks we wanted to check off our to-do list as soon as possible: venue, date and photographer. We feel like we really lucked out and worked with some of the best vendors available to us by taking this approach! We went for a simple, rustic and crafty feel that fit our venue perfectly. I definitely mean WE when I say it too, as Sean was a huge help throughout all the DIY creations I dreamed up. Sean’s biggest project was the save the date stop-motion video, while mine was our invitations. He spent many, many hours creating a story board, taking over 400 photos, importing them to iMovie and adding music. I spent well over a month sourcing the perfect (cotton) paper, setting up a new printer at home, designing, cutting, gluing, personalizing and hand-addressing over 100 invitations. Most of the decor for the wedding was handmade too. Sean, my mom and I folded, cut and fluffed around 250 crepe paper flowers to make the rings around the lanterns on each table. I wrapped 4-inch craft letters in yarn for our gifts table and used a leftover lantern as our card box. The seating chart was a hand-painted banner that read “find your seat,” and we painted a few pieces of wood to collage frames on that read every guest’s name and table number in alphabetical order. I designed and printed the table numbers to match our invitations, and my bridesmaids helped me cut and glue them. Sean and I cut and glued 200 paper flags that read “Yay” and “Hooray” for guests to wave as we walked down the aisle together. The cake topper was handmade by Brandi of Milk Tea, which I won through a contest on Love and Lavender. Our guestbook was probably one of my favorite details at the reception. I saw a similar example online from a bride who had used wine bottles to gather messages from guests, and I knew something like that would be perfect for our day since our venue was a wine garden. I collected bottles and put labels on them to correspond with the anniversary we’d be opening the bottle. We reused strips of paper from a wedding countdown chain Sean’s cousin had made us as a gift the previous Christmas. Our guests wrote their notes on the strips, rolled them up, and put them in a bottle of their choice. We loved reading the notes from the bottle labeled 10.15.11, and I had to pack away the remainder of the bottles so we’re not tempted to break in to any future anniversary bottles before we’re supposed to!  Finding my gown was easy — I saw it online and knew it would be the one. I chose to switch up tradition a bit and go with “Something new, something old, something black and something gold” in honor of the 100th anniversary of Homecoming at my alma mater, Mizzou, which occurred on our wedding day. My dress and shoes were new, and I wore a vintage brooch to accent my pearl bracelet as something old. I made myself a purse out of gold and black fabric to represent my school’s colors. The pearl bracelet was actually a necklace I borrowed from my mom that used to belong to my grandmother. I did manage to also wear something blue, which was the stone in a Claddaugh ring my parents had given me as a souvenir from their trip to Ireland years ago. Sean and I can’t think of a single thing that we didn’t love about our wedding day. We’re proud to say that we made sure to eat plenty, drink very little, and get a piece of the wedding cake as well! We chose to do a wedding in which every part of the ceremony was meaningful to us. If it wasn’t meaningful to us personally, we didn’t do it. This meant that we wrote and emceed the ceremony ourselves and had a total of 13 guests (plus a stray dog), who sat in a semi-circle and each spoke during the wedding. Our guests were our closest family members–the people who would find our ceremony as significant and meaningful as we did. To us, marriage is both a very private and a community affair, so we wanted people who would be an active part of our married life to be a part of our wedding.

Throughout the wedding process, we made sure to stay true to ourselves. At the end of the day, we were the ones getting married, and we were the ones to whom every choice would matter the most. Plus, our parents got to plan the receptions that came a few months later, so they could funnel all of their own preferences into those. Also, we tried not to sweat the small stuff or fall prey to the belief that more extravagant is always better. Matching dresses and hair, decorations, and seating arrangements wouldn’t have made the day any more special to us. Nor would anything more expensive than we chose. (Some good resources for others trying to decipher what elements of weddings are truly meaningful to them are the books Committed by Elizabeth Gilbert and A Short History of Marriage by Ethel Urlin.)

One aspect of the wedding that was very important to us from the get-go was having a really, really good photographer. We wanted more than anything to remember the emotions we and our families felt on that day, and the best way to do that was to get the kind of photographer that captures people as they are, not people as they look. I think you will agree that our wish was more than fulfilled.

In fact, the whole day was absolutely perfect. And every bit our dream wedding.

From the bride… Hunter and I are already married, but we wanted to do a wedding all our own this time. We just wanted things to be simple and our own. The wedding “redo” was held in a old building loft with lots of great character in downtown Kansas City. Small, intimate and modern. I’m an art teacher and very creative, but I let the professionals take reins on their ideas, and I love how it came together. The the invitations were great because their reply cards were open for drawings. I wore a dress designed and made by my friend that was inspired by Vera Wang. The floral designer was amazing because they painted a branch black and hung it above the ceremony space with white blooms hanging from the smaller branches. They styled the reception pieces perfectly to give us a classic look with a modern twist. Our stylist made the setting with old furniture and pieces from home to give it an intimate feeling. The cake was amazing because the black flower was the perfect accent to tie in my dress. There was a picture that I had drawn of Hunter and I that hung above the cake table that really brought in a personal touch of us. It was such a fun, intimate wedding.

After dating Miss Katie Woodard for about two years I was thinking it is time to ask her to marry me. We started dating near the end of college and neither of us had any expectations for our relationship. We quickly realized though, that we were falling in love. After I graduated college I started a job in Oklahoma City, while Katie was working in St. Louis. She was trying to find a job in OKC about the time that I decided I was going to propose. I kept leading her on that I only wanted to get married when I was 30 or older so she thought that it was going to take forever. So when I planned a trip to Europe she had no clue about what I had planned for her.

We first flew into Liverpool from Oklahoma City. Our second day we went to the beloved Paris. She wanted to go for quite some time now, so I thought it was the perfect romantic time to take her. We strolled along the Eiffel tower at night, the Louvre during the day and had an amazing time exploring the city together. The next day we were going to Switzerland and this is when I started to get nervous.

After arriving in Geneva, Switzerland we took a scenic and very beautiful train ride to Vevey, Switzerland. The train ride curved throughout the mountains surrounding Lake Geneva. We stayed in the small quaint town of Vevey and strolled along the lake and had a great dinner overlooking the lake and the mountains. Now, since I had been leading Katie on for quite some time about not getting married until we were 30, I decided I should drop some hints before I asked her (the next day). So I brought it up somehow and then said well it might be sooner than you expect, which I thought was a huge hint but I guess she never got it.

The next morning we took a train to a small town of Chateau d’eau and tried to find the little hot air balloon house. We arrived and got all set up for a ride at 2 o’ clock. The whole trip was very beautiful, blue skies, and about 65 degrees throughout England, Paris, and Switzerland. This day was no exception. We ate a meal outside right before the balloon ride. While Katie was inside looking at the place I took the ring out of the bag I had been carrying as quickly as I could and put it in my pocket.

So we drove to the take off site and started to fill the balloon up to take off. We both jumped in the balloon and it started to ascend above the ground. This is when I started to not think about the proposal so much but I was thinking about how high I was and how I could die if I happened to fall out (scared of heights syndrome). Now my mind was going crazy. I was nervous about the heights and extra nervous about what I should say. We had a private reservation in the balloon so it was just me and Katie, plus our balloon expert who didn’t speak much english. I figured that we should enjoy the ride before I decided to ask her to marry me.

The Alps were truly stunning. I will never forget being 3000 meters in the sky and looking across to the Alps, Lake Geneva, and the beautiful green Switzerland. We were pointing out the sites and mostly in awe of what we were seeing. It was quite an adventure. So while we were at the top of our flight I decided it was time to ask her. I was ghostly pale and Katie kept looking at me and laughing. She was making fun of me because she thought I was scared of the ride and being that far up in the sky. While part of that was very true, I was more nervous about whipping the ring out and falling on one knee. So that is exactly what I did.

I wasn’t sure what to say, all I could think of was I love you and I want to spend my whole life with you. So I said that while going down on one knee. After doing all this I could very well see that she was in complete shock. All she could say was “ohhhh my gossshhhhh, are you kidding, NOOOO, are you serious?” This happened for about five minutes while I on the other hand was sweating up a storm and wasn’t sure if that was a yes or a maybe or a I don’t know. After the complete shock reaction I received I was thinking to myself that maybe I should have done this different. Maybe an easy going talk three months before the proposal about getting married should have taken place, and maybe we should have gone ring shopping together, and maybe I should have planned it better. The shock reaction was not convincing. Katie spend the rest of the ride convincing me that she would have married me a year ago!

This whole time we started our decent to a field below the mountains. So we finally landed and then had champagne while sitting in this beautiful scenery. Afterwards we talked for hours about everything that had happened while spending two more days in Switzerland. Looking back on it, it is sufficient to say that the surprise was everything I wanted it to be in the end. The balloon ride symbolizes our marriage to come; romantic, fun, and adventurous.

From the bride…What a great day. This is my own wedding. I am a wedding Photographer/Videographer and it was so nice to be on the other side. We’ve had such a long road to this day, its just amazing that we finally made it. Piotr and I met online through an education language exchange website. I helped him learn English and after months of talking via Skype we had to meet each other. 3 years later after many visas, plane tickets, moving over three different countries in a struggle to be together we finally got through the long visa process and were finally able to get married.

Our wedding was very old world/ meets European classic since that is where my husband is from. We wanted the travel theme to kind of subtly come out without being overkill. I have a tattoo of the world map on my arm so I wanted to incorporate that in some of the details.  There were a ton of personal details that had to do with travel, culture, and our story. We had a very small intimate ceremony of 28 and a reception of about 50 people. To finally be on the other side after doing so many weddings was a surreal feeling. Working in the industry allowed us to have such a special wedding without breaking the bank and be very creative with our details. There are so many details!!!!  With being at so many wedding I knew exactly what I wanted.There was a tiny hot air balloon on the top of the cake because that is how Piotr proposed to me on a hot air balloon in Turkey. We made favors for the wedding guests of pumpkin bread wrapped in parchment paper, roped with a tiny compass.

The ceremony space I loved! A friend of mine’s family owns a bunch of land and we were able to set up our small fantasy oasis in the middle of a trail fork. I had the white mantle and a few antique chairs to give it the feel of a intimate fancy living room outside. The florist did an amazing job in capturing my vision for the flowers. Soft palettes with touches and small pops of pinks and lavenders. We collected a ton of silver platter ware and crystal pieces for the flowers to ornate.  We had an old mirror frame that we used to hang our initials at the entry way of the trail to the ceremony site with small  antique suitcases and a birdcage we found. We read out vows from a little old world map journal I found at a bookstore and matched the charm of our invites. We found some acrylic chandeliers to hang in the trees with a few paper lanterns. We spent a few hours pre-burning the candles to give them that look. I collected wine bottles and put old stamps on them for a few of the flower accents. My favorite DIY detail was the giant gold frame we found and put gold satin material behind and roped gold sting up and down to hang our favors. They were mailing tags with friendship lapel pins of the Polish and American flags. The tags read ” Together at last ” which was a very personal touch to our story with how many times we’ve have to leave each other because of immigration legalities. I loved my cake/cake table. I actually found the frame idea from SMP. It was fitting because of the profession I’m in and it was just very different than from what I’m used to shooting. We had a picture table that showed old photos of us and our parents, it was very important to have photos of his parents because they were unable to make the wedding from overseas. We wanted the wedding to really carry that old world feeling. The reception venue really carried off our decor beautifully. The Hotel Phillips was a great choice because we hardly had to decorate to make it fit out style. I was in love with the ballroom from the moment I saw it.

From the Bride…Our wedding was in a word – perfect. Perfect for many reasons. First and foremost because we were getting married! After 5 ½ years (which included 4 years of medical school and a move to Chicago for residency) we were excited about our big day. Even though we live in Chicago now we knew our wedding had to be in our hometown of St. Louis, MO. We wanted our wedding to be elegant and traditional but fun with personal and “Style Me Pretty” touches.

Deciding on color palette and theme were the toughest things for me.  I love sooo many styles and was inspired daily by SMP.  My husband went to Notre Dame and is a fan of all things Irish and my favorite color is green (match made in heaven, right?) so we took those details and ran with them.  Out of these details came one of my  favorite touches of the day, our custom-made Vineyard Vines bow ties with shamrocks that matched the Coren Moore bridesmaid dresses perfectly. We had a bagpiper at the ceremony which was very dramatic – in a good way.  The bagpiper came down the aisle to “pick us up” and lead us in the recessional. It was amazing  to have a moment, facing the church, my husband in hand,  listening to the bagpiper.  My advice to brides to be is don’t be too concerned with what your “colors” are or what your “theme” is but start picking things you love and that are personal to you and your husband and everything will fall into place.  The most amazing and incredible part of the day was feeling all the love around us. We feel so blessed to have such amazing friends and family who helped make our day so special.

A key part to our perfect wedding was our vendors! I loved each and every one. If SMP taught me one thing it was choose amazing vendors. Even for a detailed oriented type A personality like myself – you can’t do it all on your wedding day. Our photographer, Susan Jackson – is incredible. The ultimate professional but someone I wanted to be best friends with. And she is so talented I wasn’t worried for a second about how our photos would turn out. Our wedding planner, Jen was the best! I did not worry about a thing the day or week of our wedding.  Danielle, who did my hair and make up – ah-mazing. So fun to be around and also so freaking good at what she does. I wish I could say I look like I did on my wedding day everyday… not so much!  Joe, our cinematographer – also awesome.  I hardly knew he was there and am so so so glad he was there to capture so much of our day.  Bloomin’ Buckets, our florist, also fabulous, she translated my vision to reality  perfectly. I could go on and on about our vendors but they truly were the best and made our day everything we wanted it to be and more.

From Susan Jackson Photography…Yes, Lindsey and Tyler are a beautiful couple and that makes my job easy. But I want take a moment to talk about something. Lindsey is one of the most beautiful people I’ve ever met on the inside. She’s the type of person every little girl would want to be when they grow up. Brides’s take note here, Lindsey was sweet, happy, relaxed and poised all day long and gracious to all of those around her. This is the definition of a beautiful bride. It’s not how expensive the dress is or how big of a budget you have. I’ve photographed big and small budget weddings over the years and a “beautiful wedding” is when the couple embodies all of those qualities that I just mentioned above…..and yes, Tyler did too. Every couple has glitches on their wedding day, it’s just part of the territory, but there was no drama for this girl, she just smiled, even though the weather was approaching a hundred degrees. So brides if you’re thinking about having one of those “freak out moments”, because the cake was leaning or the flowers weren’t quite the right shade you were imagining or your mother is driving you crazy……don’t do it! No one is going to remember the “small stuff.” They will however, remember how poised you were in handling the situation. And….it should go without saying, this always makes for prettier pictures!

From the Bride…Ian and I met and currently live in Los Angeles, but we were both raised in the Midwest and we will always have a soft spot in our heart for its lush beauty and rolling hills. It is no surprise then that what I really wanted more than anything was to have an outdoor garden ceremony. This, as it turns out, is easier said than done. I must have visited at least twenty different sites in California, but everything was either too expensive, too inconvenient for out of town guests, or just plain not right. I was feeling pretty discouraged when I happened to stumble across some photos of the spectacular gardens and beautiful Spink Pavilion at the Missouri Botanical Gardens. It was literally exactly what I’d been looking for, and it was in Ian’s hometown. A few calls revealed that my date, which was a holiday weekend, had just become available due to a cancellation. It was meant to be. I booked it over the phone without even seeing it with my own eyes!

Since I am a graduate student of very limited means (I’m currently studying for my Doctorate), it was really important to adhere to a strict budget. My few splurges were on the photography, the catering, and the dress. Megan Thiele was worth every penny, and her images are so wonderful I don’t even miss not having a videographer. My dress choice was not as easy – but I managed to get a steal by buying my Vera Wang gown during a local sample sale. I got a big discount and a free accessory, which was a bracelet that I turned into a sash by having the rhinestones sown onto a thick ivory ribbon. I found other ways to save money: I bought rose-colored pink goblets and bronze vases at thrift stores, which made excellent table accents.

The actual wedding day was an exercise in faith. St. Louis was wracked by storms and deadly tornadoes in the week prior to the wedding – we spent one particularly memorable afternoon in the basement riding out tornado sirens. The storms ripped the awning off our reception space so we would not have rain coverage for the outdoor patio, where the cocktail hour and dancing were to take place. Though the wedding day dawned mild and partly sunny, by the time for the ceremony came it definitely looked like rain. I was torn. Fourteen months of planning had gone into this garden ceremony, but would it be worth it if I got drenched in my Vera Wang?? It was Brandy, my day-of-coordinator from STL Wedding Consultants, who encouraged me to stick to the plan: “I say we go for it, Natalie!” And so I took one last leap of faith and we went for it. I’ll never forget the moment when I rounded the corner to make my walk down the aisle. It was just how I’d hoped it would be – so simple and sweet – just family, nature, and love. Miraculously, the rain held off until just after we’d said “I do!”. And later that evening, the drizzle ceased and we had the world’s most spectacular night for dancing. It was better than I could’ve ever hoped for.
