From Rebekah of Kallima Photography… Laura and Jon’s classic and elegant wedding was held at the Country Club of Orlando, the most un-country club-like venue we have ever seen. The ballroom rivaled one at the Breakers Palm Beach, with extra high ceilings and gorgeous chandeliers, and we truly feel like this venue is a well-kept central Florida secret! Both living and thriving in New York City (bride works for Tori Burch, groom for 2(x)ist) Laura and Jon seated guests at tables named after their favorite areas of the city. The orchid, rose, and peony centerpieces were truly works of art, and Kilwin’s chocolates were given to each guest as favors. The ornate cream on cream-colored wedding cake was topped with gorgeous pink peonies. The live band literally kept EVERY guest on the floor ’till the bitter end, and the groom’s brother/best man serenaded the crowd on his ukulele as a special treat and tribute to Jon. The bridesmaids made a weekend out of the wedding, all staying in Laura’s huge family home right on the water in Orlando. Her one-of-a-kind Melissa Sweet gown was an absolute stunner and paired with gorgeous crystal embellished Jimmy Choos. Laura’s sister and maid of honor, Shelby, stayed close by her side most of the wedding day and had every guest crying during her toast. The sisters are very close. Truly a family-celebrated event, and an absolutely gorgeous one at that. From the bride… I have to admit that I imagined our wedding day long before we were actually engaged. I wasn’t exactly the little girl planning her wedding at 10 years old, but I do professionally plan events for a bridal magazine, so ever since I began working for the magazine, I paged through issue after issue of Minnesota Bride, collected pages of inspiration and naturally envisioned what my wedding day would look like. I’m somewhat of a perfectionist, so I like to think that a good amount of thought and planning went into every single detail. As most brides do, I spent countless hours online looking at wedding blogs for inspiration and ideas that would really wow guests, but also reflect David and I as a couple. Although we didn’t really have a wedding theme in mind, the decor and overall design elements had sort of a vintage-glamour look, from the lace, linen and vintage vanity mirrors used for table numbers to the all white floral and candlelight. In terms of colors we went with timeless classics: black, white, silver and gray. We knew we wanted a formal wedding, but what we didn’t want our guests to think it was going to be so formal that it wasn’t going to be a good time. So in order to set a fun tone for the event, we worked with the amazing Gretchen Berry of Watermark Stationery to create the perfect wedding suite, which added a whimsical element with an accordion fold-out invitation placed in a mini envelope and custom calligraphy from a local talent, Crystal Kluge.

David and I were married at Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota on a beautiful, sunny, 75 degree day. Our 215 guests filled the small, 75-year-old church perfectly. And, as I had heard from several brides before me, the whole ceremony was a blur, but a perfect blur. I wore the wedding dress of my dreams, an ivory Vera Wang gown made with layers of silk organza and tulle. Following the ceremony, David and I drove around the Minneapolis uptown lakes area in a vintage white Bentley and upon arriving at the reception, were greeted by our closest family and friends who had started the party for us. From the food, lighting, decor, floral and music to our amazing family and friends who have loved and supported us from day 1, it was truly a dream come true. I can’t thank our incredible wedding vendors enough for helping us create the wedding of our dreams. Matt Blum Photography and Matt Brue of Capture Studios, you documented our wedding day perfectly.

The most important piece of advice I would give to any brides-to-be is to hire a day-of coordinator. We worked with an absolutely wonderful wedding planner, Mi Mi Design, run by the talented Amy Red and Amy Blonde. David and I were able to enjoy every moment of the day and didn’t worry about a thing. Everything came together perfectly and I have all of our vendors to thank for that.

Jordan and I met in college after being introduced by mutual friends. After dating for five years Jordan proposed one week before Christmas. Loving all things romantic I have dreamed of my wedding day since I was a young girl. So it was only fitting that I dove right into planning. Early on in our planning I was introduced to Style Me Pretty by my friend Renee (Designs by Renee), who also designed our beautiful letter pressed wedding invitations and coordinating paper stationary. I was immediately hooked, visiting the website multiple times a day! It was such an inspiration in not only providing details for our wedding, but amazing advice and stories from other brides and grooms.

I could not imagine our wedding anywhere else other then the town I grew up in. Our ceremony was held in the church where I was baptized and had my first communion. Our reception was held at a private residence that happens to be my aunt and uncles home. Although our reception was held outdoors, we wanted a formal wedding with a romantic feel. I loved that Jordan and I could design our celebration from start to finish incorporating our personalities and interests into every last detail.

My mom was my partner in crime throughout the planning process. Whether it was traveling up and down the east coast to find the perfect antique birdcage for our cards or rummaging through old photos of our grandparents and great grandparents on their wedding day, we had such a fun time. Even my dad joined in on the fun taking dance lessons and surprising all our guests with a choreographed father-daughter dance, something completely out of his element.

After a year and a half of planning and waiting, torrential downpours and record flooding reminisce of Tropical Storm Lee threatened our day. Unable to get the tents and rentals in, we almost had to completely move our reception location to an indoor venue. Two days later on our wedding day September 10, 2011 the rain gave way to beautiful blue skies and our reception was able to go on as planned.

Absolutely everything turned out perfect and our day was amazing, sprinkled with beautiful blush, ivory and gold details! We were so fortunate to work with the most wonderful wedding professionals that took our vision and turned it into reality. It was the best day of our lives and we are so happy we could celebrate our marriage with all our amazing family and friends.

From Kelly Dillon Photography…Details, details, details. That was the name of the game and they were captured perfectly by the supremely talented Kelly Dillon and (thankfully) noticed & appreciated by our friends & family. Bill proposed exactly 1 year prior to our wedding day and I had a definite vision: to get married in New England…in a tent…in the Fall, and I knew I wanted what I came to coin as an “upscale rustic chic” theme. Elm Bank was the PERFECT backdrop to our perfect day, sandwiched in between a weekend of torrential downpours and an early-season snowstorm!

We were fortunate to know many of our fabulous vendors beforehand (and boy did we have a lot of them!) and I wanted to be as hands-on as possible, so I took on the role of both bride & planner. We started with the concept and stayed pretty true to it throughout the process, but it definitely evolved in terms of colors and certain elements. Style Me Pretty was like my bible and I should note that I still continue to stalk this site every day!

Of utmost importance was a day that was personal, filled with joy & love, and that it was very unique and very “us”. I appreciate certain traditions but I was always thinking: how can we make them our own? It truly did come down to the details and many were DIY-chosen projects that I wanted to take on myself. This was a time my creativity had no boundaries and I loved it! The end result was a representation of me & Bill as a couple and as individuals.

With the help from our floral genius, Orly from Tangerine Creations, we were able to bring typical Fall colors into the bouquets & boutonnieres, as well as the cocktail/lounge area. We wanted a WOW factor though so behind the separating sheer pipe & drape was a reception area in contrast to those colors…soft taupes, ivories, deep purples and LOTS of branches and candles. The lighting provided a soft glow everywhere, and a branch go-bo projected beautifully on the drapes. The final product was utterly romantic & rustic but also fresh and totally “New England”.

I found some birch tree curtains at Ikea of all places and knew immediately I wanted to use them on some of the tables as runners. I also knew that I wanted tables in different shapes with different linens & centerpieces. Bill and I both wanted a fun head table and we ended up creating the most gorgeous long table from 3 whitewash farm tables (thank you New England Country Rentals!) that stood out from the other square & circle tables.

The day was whimsical, romantic and lively, and made so memorable by any # of things…the modern take on the Jewish 7 Blessings, the most gorgeous chuppah I’ve ever seen, the guys wearing Chuck Taylors, the girls wearing different dresses with custom shoe clips (Etsy was my go-to for everything!), my something “blue” in the form of Bill’s blue baby bracelet woven into my bouquet…and some unexpected details such as serving pumpkin beer in mason jars with cinnamon sugar rims, assigning tree names to each table, enclosing a “what’s happening card” I designed in the napkins instead of a menu card, or the most unbelievably tasty and beautiful dessert spread instead of a traditional cake (why stop at one flavor when you can have 4? And apple cider donuts! And candy! Okay you get the point).

I could go on and on but what it came down to was an unforgettable day far more beautiful & more fun than we could’ve imagined (the dance floor was packed thanks to a fabulous band & DJ…we even saw guests munching on salmon & noodles out of takeout boxes while standing in line for the photobooth!) I had so much fun that I even forgot to change into my blue sparkly Converse for dancing! All in all, it was a perfect blending of our families & friends and I desperately miss planning it already! Most importantly, guests can say it was totally “emily and bill.”

From the bride…Our inspiration for our wedding was “organic luxe.” We wanted to incorporate as many natural elements as possible; from burlap runners, gnarly branches, river rocks, sprigs of dried lavender as favors, potted orchid plants wrapped in moss, to the many cascading floral arrangements. Our venue captured the perfect amount of relaxed elegance – we wanted our guests to feel like they were at a really fun party, like a much grander version of the parties we love having in our home with family and friends!! People left asking if we could do it again the following weekend!

From the Bride…We both wanted to have a wedding in a relaxed, rustic and outdoor setting. Neither of us had thought of Carmel Valley until my aunt suggested it as a great option for guests coming from both Southern and Northern California. The venue itself helped guide us in terms of décor as the oak trees, rolling hills and summer camp cabin setting created a perfect backdrop for the elegant, rustic, and relaxed vibe we ended up going with. We also wanted to design the wedding around an entire weekend where the guests would be able to have time to get to know each other, spend time with us and enjoy the scenery. Another important part of our vision was the desire to have Brett heavily involved in the planning. Brett is a set designer and utilized his creative talents across the board. He built the dance floor, aisle, escort-card seating board and designed the invitation suite. It was important to both of us that we have creative license over making our wedding a personal reflection of our aesthetic tastes. At the end of the day, we wanted the wedding to feel leisurely, unique and fun. We feel as though we were able to accomplish each of those things.

My aunt spent much of her childhood in Carmel Valley and had begun helping us locate a venue after we were coming up short in our searches. Douglas Ranch was one of the sites she suggested. Upon visiting, it became clear almost immediately that this was our venue. The venue was breathtaking, charming and rustic. The grounds were expansive and offered on site lodging for our guests. We also loved that we were able to hold all of our wedding events (welcome dinner, wedding and Sunday brunch) on the same property.

I loved every minute of it. I loved the ceremony as a whole. It truly captured our relationship and commitment to each other. We were able to include some of our family members in the ceremony, which was also wonderful. I also loved our first dance. Dancing with my new husband under the canopy of the oak trees truly took my breath away. I also loved the food. I know that most people say you will be too busy and distracted to enjoy the food, but I made sure to take a few moments to enjoy it. Our caterer was amazing and she roasted an entire pig for the event. It was one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten. Another truly memorable part of our wedding was the late night party. At eleven, the party was moved inside the lodge where another meal of sliders and pizza was served with the fireplaces lit and vintage couches arranged throughout the room. It was so nice to have a relaxing place to end the evening where no one was rushed home and the music could play into the wee hours.

When we started the planning process, my aunt offered to handle much of it for us. It was such a lifesaver and a blessing. She took on many of the more difficult, time consuming and mundane details of wedding planning which was one of the best gifts we could have ever asked for. She also has a background in visuals and merchandising, which played out in the table décor and overall feel of each event. Also, our caterer was fabulous. She came with the venue and we could not have been happier. She presented delicious, creative, beautiful, and memorable food throughout the entire weekend. Lastly, our venue was perfect. The owners were accommodating, fun and involved throughout the entire process. We felt supported while also that they offered us room to create the events to our tastes (we did not want to feel confined to a cookie cutter mold). We could not have asked for a better team overall!

From the Bride…Alex and I love riding our bicycles through Downtown San Jose on hot summer nights. There’s something nostalgic, romantic and spontaneous about riding a bicycle with the wind blowing through your hair and up your dress! What better way to celebrate a wedding than with a bicycle parade. Our “Tour de San Jose” hit all our favorite city landmarks.

This wedding was truly the definition of DIY starting with the reception site. When we bought our home, it was previously used as an office building so the backyard was literally a parking lot. Instead of spending our money on a fancy hotel or renting our dream venue, the San Jose Museum of Art, we decided to use the money to remodel the backyard. One year later, 2,000 square feet of removed concrete, 19 tons of gravel, 2 tons soil, 2 tons of mulch, over 100 plants, countless hours of shoveling, painting and pick axing, we finally had our french potager garden and some muscles! Instead of lawn, which gives you no food, the French potager or American equivalent, the “freedom garden,” focuses on planting edible ornamentals. In World War I and II, the American Government encouraged people to plant gardens to sustain themselves in times of crisis. They called them “freedom gardens.” We support the movement of organic and sustainable agriculture. On each corner of the square, we planted herbs: rosemary, sage, thyme, mint, basil, and parsley as a homage to the “freedom garden” and our love for cooking.

The colors, black white and yellow were inspired by a mother-daughter trip to the Palm Spring’s Viceroy hotel. The hotel exuded modern, crispness with yellow, bringing a touch of whimsy. I painted and re-upholstered garage sale finds and raided my mother’s garage. Chalkboard signs were hand painted and influenced by art deco and art nouveau designs.

The food paid tribute to our ethnic backgrounds. Empanadas reflected the groom’s Peruvian background, while Japanese snowcones, “kakigori”, scallop cups and ahi tuna reflected the bride’s Japanese background.

The best part of our wedding was having our family and friends help us remodel and paint. There was something very special about spending time with people you care about as you are collectively creating and building something together. Overall or wedding was everything we hoped it would be: fun, bright, whimsical and unpretentious. There’s nothing more humble than inviting people into your home.

From the Bride…When we started planning our wedding, we originally planned for a big at home shindig in Nashville. Tennessee. Since we’re both in the wedding industry (I’m a floral event designer, he’s a photographer) we pretty much instantly got overwhelmed with the logistics of such a wedding– how do you keep friends and colleagues happy while also dealing with the desires and expectations of family and friends. It was the most stressful time of our lives. I know that every bride and groom think about eloping, but when my then-fiance posed the question of running away, I didn’t hesitate. We were at another couple’s reception who had married in Kona, at the Wedding Tree and Don looked at me and said “let’s get married there,” and I just about swooned over the perfection of the place.

It took another few months to work up the courage to make our dream a reality, but we did it– and brought along 8 of our closest friends and family members. As I planned, I focused on making sure that each decision and every detail fully embraced and reflected who we were as a couple– sweet and fun loving, while still elegant and refined. Our venue was not unlike paradise– the place is gorgeous. It’s impossible to be there and not feel like you are in a slice of heaven. We made a point to carve out lots of time with our photographer and to spend time navigating the property. We wrapped up our session with a day-after shoot at dawn. I love those images because we’re so refreshed and laid back.  To be perfectly honest, I didn’t feel stressed out in the least on my wedding day. It was the most beautiful, perfect day– and I am so thankful that we made the decision to run off to Hawaii. Second only to marrying my husband, it’s the best decision I’ve ever made.
