From the Groom … My most vivid memories of the day include taking an early morning run across the beautiful ranch, passing by the cabins where my bride and her bridesmaids were getting ready, enjoying the solitude of the open valley, and envisioning the amazing day to come.  Also, the paired grooms and bridesmaids slowly winding their way through the meadow and down to the alter, followed by my gorgeous bride-to-be.

From the Bride … I love the photos of the bridesmaids amongst the aspen trees.  The contrast of the blue dresses with the tall trees is gorgeous.  I also love the photos of Geoff and I just after our ceremony when we walked around the ranch.  Jenna Walker Photography captured the sun’s rays of light beaming through us and nature in a way that appears so magical.

From Jenna Walker Photographers… Libby’s southern roots and Bryan’s New York ties shined through in this eclectic ‘Welcome Y’all” wedding celebration in Libby’s hometown of Augusta, Georgia. They danced the night away in a backyard reception just minutes from the famous Augusta National Golf Course.

Highlights from the wedding included several singing performances by Bryan, a drum solo by Libby’s brother – and a band that would keep the party going. The property twinkled with the draping of lights across the pool and the shine of their sparkler departure.

We met as college students at the University of Colorado at Boulder and were engaged six years later. We fell in love in the mountains and spent most of our relationship living in Colorado, so it was a natural choice to have our wedding there.

Our entire wedding was inspired by a quote sent by a family member when we first were engaged. It read: “Legends say that hummingbirds float free of time, carrying our hopes for love, joy and celebration. Like a hummingbird, we aspire to hover and savor each moment as it passes, embrace all that life has to offer and to celebrate the joy of everyday. The hummingbird’s delicate grace reminds us that life is rich, beauty is everywhere, every personal connection has meaning and that laughter is life’s sweetest creation.” This quote did not just inspire the design (a little hummingbird can be found on all printed elements), but it also inspired the kind of memories we wanted to create with each other and our guests. Memories of love, joy and laughter.

Our vision was to give guests a bit of the unexpected from a mountain wedding. Instead of going with a traditional rustic look, we created a juxtaposition between rustic and chic elegance. The ceremony was held at a very rustic location, Hallam Lake. It is a stone’s throw from the town of Aspen, but leaves you with the feeling that you are in the middle of nowhere. It was intimate and serene. It was perfect.

To contrast the rustic feel of the ceremony site, guests gathered for a tented reception in downtown Aspen at the chic St. Regis Hotel. With the vision of Creative Weddings and The Aspen Branch, our reception was sprinkled with touches of elegance, including: crystal chandeliers, twinkle lights, candles, and high floral/birch centerpieces with delicate crystal strands. It was certainly a celebration, mixed with laughter and perhaps a few tears of joy. Our band, Soul School, had guests dancing up a storm even before dinner was served.

From Sapphire Celebrations ~ An elegant plum and orange wedding hosted in Vail, Colorado. An outdoor ceremony took place at the Lion Square Lodge. The bride and groom exchanged vows underneath a wooden arch with simple floral accents. After a drive through Eagle County in a classic Rolls Royce for some pictures, Dyann and Dave joined their guests at the Donovan Pavilion for dinner and dancing.

From the bride ~ Dave and I were engaged for 14 months before our wedding date. For the first 2 months or so, we really didn’t do any sort of planning at all. We allowed ourselves a little bit of time to just be together in our state of betrothal in order to not only get used to the idea of being engaged, but to also allow for some of the initial flurry of excitement to subside. The last thing we needed was everyone bombarding us with questions about the wedding while we were actually going through the stress of planning it.

Once everything calmed down a bit, we really started to get into research and planning mode. Having never really allowed myself to envision what my wedding would look like (I didn’t want to be disappointed if my day didn’t turn out to be just as I had always imagined), we had a great deal of style planning to do. Initially we spent a good bit of time researching what sorts of features we wanted to be present in our wedding. After all, you can’t build a house without knowing what you want it to look like, so why try to plan your wedding without a plan for your vision.

I spent time looking through wedding magazines and websites to find concepts and images of what I wanted my day to look like. This was an excellent way to get started as we were able to use ideas from other weddings to formulate a vision of what the wedding should look like. Local wedding magazines were a great resource for finding vendors and locations that were in our area and fit with our vision for the wedding. If we could not find information for a particular wedding resource, a hair stylist for instance, we used recommendations from the already booked vendors to find what we were looking for. Our reception hall, for example, helped us find our officiant. In that way, all of the pieces just started to fall into place. In making recommendations to future brides, I suggest looking into investing a portion of your wedding budget in a planner. They have established lists of reliable resources and relationships that a first-time planner cannot possibly develop. It will surely save you countless hours of time.

But rather than let that deter the so-so-so- happy couple … they chose to embrace the day!

Little Black Book member, Heather Dwight of Calluna Events in Boulder, Colorado coordinated Joanne & Jake’s  wedding. She’s written a great piece on her blog about ‘a day in the life of’ a wedding planner based upon Jake & Joanne’s wedding!  The point being … no matter how well organized you are, “stuff” happens. Think of a wedding coordinator as a fireman wearing many hats who puts out lots of little fires! Heather, you guys did a fantastic job!!

Jenna Walker Photographers … Jenna & Katie … are sisters, who each, in their own rights, are mega-talented photographers. They capture the emotions, the passions … and the FUN … that make this day, of all days, AMAZING!

Joanne & Jake are the type of people you can’t help but admire. They are the creative types. Adventurers. Authentic, no holds barred. All with the sort of humility that many aspire to, but few attain. Joanne is a well-traveled, sharp-shooting architect. Jake – the Editor-in-Chief of Skiing Magazine: see also witty journalist guised as a ski bum. Put the two together, give them a map – and you’ve got a story worth listening to. Sit down. Grab a beer. They will make you laugh. Given this combination, it was with deep respect that the task of shooting their wedding would become. They know photography. They know clean lines and soft light and composition. But more than that, they understand what is real, what is true, what is them.

. . .

A family full of writers makes for a series of toasts worthy of publishing. Everyone had a go at the mic – even the littlest lady of the family put in her two cents. As a finale to a series of 4 or 5 speeches, Jake toasted Joanne in a laugh-till-you-cry speech.
