When Matthew proposed, he worked hard to surprise me (not an easy task to surprise a nosey girl like me!). One night, Matthew told me that he had to work late in Maryland and would not be able to come visit for the weekend. I made dinner plans with my friends at the Blue Talon in Williamsburg. During dinner, Maddie told me that she just received a text message that there was a research group at the Williamsburg Lodge and she really wanted to go get their autographs. After dinner, Maddie, Kaci, and I drove to the Williamsburg Lodge until Maddie stopped her car and asked me if she knew of a garden near the Lodge because that was where the group was meeting. I, still oblivious to what was going on, said “Well there is the rose garden where Matt’s parents got engaged to your left.” Maddie swerved her car to the front of the rose garden and Kaci and Maddie both screamed “Get out of the car!” while speeding off with me still thinking they were playing a trick on me. I decided to walk down the stairs of the sunken rose garden only to find no one there. I kept walking until I saw Matthew come out from behind an archway with a huge smile on his face. Matthew walked toward me, knelt down on one knee with an open box in his hand, and asked me to marry him in the same spot that his father asked his mother to marry him. Matthew then told me that he planned a weekend for us in Ocracoke, North Carolina to celebrate our engagement!

While planning our wedding, I knew I wanted our personalities to shine through in every aspect. Both Matthew and I have traditional, classic taste with a modern twist. We decided to have our wedding ceremony in the Catholic Church where my parents were married and where I grew up. Matthew’s father is an Anglican pastor, so we wanted to incorporate both of our families’ religious traditions. He gave a memorable and personal sermon that made the ceremony seem intimate even with a room full of 400 people. The ceremony music was also very important to us. We had a trumpeter, organist, a string quartet, and a soloist who all beautifully performed songs we selected together. As I walked down the aisle, I wore my great grandmother’s diamond and sapphire ring as my something old, borrowed, and blue. My grandmother passed away one month before my wedding, so honored her by carrying her handkerchief in my bouquet.

Matthew and I chose the Chrysler Museum of Art for our reception venue not only because we loved the Renaissance style of the museum’s atrium, but also because I studied Art History in college. For the flowers and décor, I wanted a romantic atmosphere with blush tones, ivory, and metallics. My team at Isha Foss Events transformed my vision into a breathtaking display of draped arches, cascading crystals, and various tones of pink flowers.

While our wedding was a formal black tie affair, Matthew and I wanted our reception to be a party for our guests to enjoy good food and great music. For this reason, we decided to do heavy hors d’ ouvres instead of a sit down dinner. We had themed food stations around the museum with our favorite cuisine including fresh seafood on the rocks, a southern fare station, a beef carving station, and a chocolate bar. Instead of assigned seating, Isha Foss designed a lounge-like cocktail set up that outlined the dance floor and gave a contemporary spin on the traditional black tie affair.

My two favorite memories from our wedding day were our First Look and walking down the Chrysler’s marble staircase into the reception for the first time as husband and wife. Matthew and I met in the museum’s garden before the ceremony. I loved being able to share a quite and private moment with my soon to be husband before our night of craziness ahead. I will never forget the look on his face when he first saw me (luckily, my photographer Jeff Greenough captured this moment on film). My second favorite memory from our wedding day occurred when my father introduced us to our reception. I felt like royalty on my new husband’s arm as we walked down the staircase and moved straight into our first dance. The entire day was the perfect representation of Matthew and me as a couple, and it could not have been possible without the hard work of our family and all of our fabulous vendors.

Are you ready for the most amazing wedding story we’ve seen in a long time?

My wedding day is every bride’s worst nightmare. What transpired on that picture perfect Friday afternoon was nothing short of a miracle. The beautiful pictures you see depict not what I imagined it would be, but what I wouldn’t trade for the world. After all, behind all the glitz and glamour of a modern day wedding, is it not really just about two people vowing to love, cherish and honor each other for the rest of their lives? Well that’s the lesson, unfortunately, I learned the hard way.

The dreaded call came in around 1:00PM on Friday, August 26th, the day before Hurricane Irene was predicated to hit the coastal towns of New Jersey, and just FOUR hours before my wedding ceremony was scheduled to begin. Due to the “red alert” and evacuation orders issued for Atlantic City, our five-star venue was forced to cancel our wedding ceremony and reception… I can still hear the words “Your event has been cancelled” ringing in my diamond-clad ear. For as most brides know, four hours before your ceremony begins, your hair has been coiffed, your makeup has been perfected and you are trying to relax while sipping on your mimosa.

So what do you do when your dream has been crushed? Well, most families may regretfully inform the guests of the unfortunate news. However, as you can see by the pictures, we’re not like most families. I remember the moment so vividly. My sister, and maid of honor, looked at me frankly and said, “What do you want to do? You know, we’ve always said someone should get married at Lynette’s house.” (Lynette is a close family friend with an AMAZING outdoor landscape.) And that was all took…

The ball was rolling. Our families frantically took to the phones, rerouting the minister, ordering chairs, trying to piece together some semblance of a ceremony. The most amazing moment was when we pulled up to the house, having no idea what our wedding would look like, and seeing the beautiful ceremony space arranged on the lawn and the smiles of our friends and family. You can see by the pictures, they did an amazing job!

When you’re in the throes of planning the big, glamorous wedding affair that you dreamt of, it is so easy to forget the real meaning and purpose behind the day. We were blessed with the wonderful reminder that it is not really about the venue, or the 5 course meal, but rather being surrounded and supported by the people that care for you as you embark on this journey called marriage with the one you love the most!

From I Do… Weddings! … Heather and Nick were married on July 29 in San Diego. Their ceremony took place at the Immaculate Concepcion Church in Old Town San Diego. Their reception for almost 200 guests took place at Marina Village, in the Mission Bay area of San Diego.

Heather and Nick’s wedding was very much a reflection of their interpretation of a vintage wedding, with a San Diego twist. Their ceremony photos took place in the historic and oldest area of San Diego called Old Town. The celebration was certainly a labor of love for both families. Almost every detail of the day was handmade. For example, the Mother of the Bride hand painted every single charger, created a unique display of glass shutters for seating arrangements, as well as the bride’s incredible brooch bouquet. The Mother of the Bride also hand-created beautiful and ornate Save-The-Dates and programs. The Mother of the Groom made incredible programs, as well as provided fun vintage signage.

The bride and groom served a fun signature drink, “Love Spell,” a blueberry daquiri with fresh blueberries. Heather and Nick also displayed photos from their engagement shoot (shot by Acqua Photo), as well as family wedding photos. Their cake was served as individual tiers, served on a vintage cake rack, with bridesmaid bouquets tucked throughout the rack. Vintage porcelain bells were placed on each table for guests to ring for the newlyweds to kiss. The room was swagged with organza and white twinkle lights to create a warm and inviting environment. At each placesetting was a cherub, holding a sign that read “Love in Bloom” and was filled with complimentary florals. At each table was a centerpiece of colorful hydrangeas, crystals and cut glass and candles for a romantic effect.

After leaving the ceremony, the newlyweds sped off in a classic car after an exciting send off by guests with ribbon wands. And, to keep the dance floor packed all evening, a vintage bicycle was placed on the dance floor with a basket filled with flowers. At the base of the bicycle was a basket of flip flops to help ensure guests could dance all night.

My family has been a Chatham family for over 30 years, and it was only natural that we should plan a wedding at the Chatham Bars Inn.  A favorite family story is that, while driving past Chatham Bars Iinn when I was three years old, I told my Dad that this was where I wanted to have my wedding.  So, having our wedding reception there was a dream come true.

Joe and I grew up together in a small town in New Jersey a small bike ride away from each other.  We went through grammar school together, where we had a brief “romance” in elementary school. Joe and I began dating in high school.  You might say we were high school sweethearts – although we attended different high schools.  During our college years we had many miles between us – I attended Boston College and Joe completed a tour in Iraq with the United States Marine Corps.  It was right before Joe left for his second tour that he asked me to marry him on a rainy evening while walking our dog.

The inspiration for our wedding was casual seaside elegance, and this is exemplified by Cape Cod’s blue hydrangeas.  The flowers at Holy Redeemer Church in Chatham were baskets of hydrangeas tied to the end of each pew, and wreaths at the front doors.  The wedding party had starfish boutonnieres.  Following the ceremony the Trolley from Chatham Bars Inn took us to the beach for pictures – we walked along the beachfront to the reception itself.

In lieu of favors, Joe and I chose to donate to a charity that is very close to our hearts – American Cancer Society.  My father passed away when I was young and we wanted to honor his memory, along with the memory of other family members who have passed.  We made the donation in loving memory of those who have fought and lost, in loving appreciation of those who have fought and won, and in loving support of those who are still fighting.

Our wedding could not have been a more perfect day – the weather was gorgeous, our guests enjoyed themselves and most importantly, Joe and I enjoyed ourselves.  We chose vendors that made our day easy –Corinna Raznikov, Patrice Milley, M. Smith & Company, and Flipside.  Chatham Bars Inn was the perfect backdrop for a seaside wedding.  The whirlwind weekend ended with a brunch for our guests on Shore Road – the house my new in laws rented for the week.

From Abi Q Photography…Maria’s look was soft and classic with a bit of beach-side romance thrown in. The wedding was held at a small Catholic church in downtown Laguna that had a timeless classiness about it. The reception was at Casa Romantica in San Clemente which is known for it’s breathtaking views of the ocean and beautiful light. Her florist did different centerpieces for each table of different heights and fullness and the soft romantic look it created was absolutely breathtaking. I loved the use of succulents alongside the pretty pastels of the hydrangeas, peonies and roses. Everything about Maria and Connor’s affair was beautiful. The best part of the day was when their coordinator, Erin, let me steal them away for ten extra minutes at sunset to capture some photos of them in beautiful light.

Emilia is a huge “Style Me Pretty” fan and was really inspired by the post she check each day! I actually knew her from high school when we were paired up together for a school assignment, and was honored that she selected me as her photographer 10 years later. From the day we met up over a year before the wedding date she had everything very neatly organized in a binder with color swatches, photos and blog posts. Purple and hydrangeas were the inspiration for the day and the detail were set around that theme.

Emilia enlisted the help of her amazing family and put special DIY touches in creating all the details that came together in such a strong way. The wedding was held at her grandparent’s house as the house and its surrounding had meant so much to her and she had fond memories of spending her childhood there. The ceremony took place in an open area off from the long tree-lined driveway and was decorated with hanging parasols. The twin flower girl’s skirts were made from an old prom dress from the maid of honor, and the groom’s nephew was wheeled down the aisle in a personalized radio flyer wagon.

Emilia and Nicholas had an amazing spread of cupcakes instead of a wedding cake. The cupcakes were featured on multiple glass and chandelier platters with purple tulle behind. The favors were personalized tote bag featuring a print of a hydrangea along with a quote from Ghandi, which was also on their wedding programs.

John and Jessica were high school sweethearts. They said their “I Do’s” in John’s parents’ back yard. I can’t imagine a more perfect backyard ~ garden wedding if I tried! {See the garlands draping the ceremony chairs? They were made by the bride’s mom!}

John and I met in high school and dated for over 6 years before we were married. Since we met each other so young we are both really close to each other’s families. We have grown up in each others homes. For this reason we decided to get married at home. We were married and had our reception in my in-laws backyard. Having the wedding at home really created in intimate, setting in which we could put ourselves in every detail.

We did a lot of DIY to make our wedding more personal. My cousin Daniela is a wedding planner and creates beautiful florals (Bella Signature Design). She was a great resource for us while we were planning our wedding. She gave us great recommendations for vendors and was a constant person who we could go to with questions. She created the most beautiful floral arrangements, more beautiful than I could have ever imagined. It was breathtaking to see all the flowers being unloaded from her car. From the beginning of our planning I knew that I wanted to have tons of flowers at our wedding. I wanted to have a very romantic look so we chose all soft colors in light pinks, peaches, buttery yellows, and creams. I wanted all the flowers to be very petally so we chose garden roses, hydrangeas, gardenias and sweet peas. We continued this floral theme by naming the tables at the reception after some of my favorite flowers.

Guests were greeted at the front of the house by two bunny topiaries that were dressed as a bride and groom. This was a surprise for us from our moms. My mother-in-law had the idea and bought the bunnies and my mom dressed them up by sewing a dress for the bride bunny as well as finding the veil, flowers, a ribbon and pearl necklace, a top hat and a tie. Guests then walked through the main entrance to the house were the found the guest book and a beautiful 3-tiered metal, garland and floral arrangement (the metal structure came from my parents’ bathroom and my cousin decked it out with the garland and beautiful flowers). Guests then walked through the double french doors to the back patio and yard where the ceremony and reception were held.

My mom and I really wanted to plan the wedding ourselves as a bonding time. We both love entertaining and design. As an art major in college I loved working with all the details, I designed our wedding invitations as well as all the paper goods (programs, labels, seating cards, etc.). It was so fun to design all of this from start to finish, I think it really gave our whole day a consistent look and feel. My mom created all the garland that you see down the aisle. She made over 40 yards of garland using greens from her yard (my parents live on 2.5 acres).

Our attendants were family and close friends. My matron-of-honor was my husband’s sister and he had my brother and his brother-in-law as groomsmen. We had a number of child attendants, we had two ring bearers, two boys to carry my train and one flower girl. The flower girl and one of the ring bearers are my cousin Daniela’s kids. The other three boys are brothers who I have nannied for years for. I have known these three boys since the oldest was three and the middle was one, I took the older boys to the hospital the day the youngest was born, needless to say we are very close. The little baby in the photos is our niece, my matron-of-honor’s 6 month old daughter.

I absolutely loved my dress and got so many compliments on it. It was so me! It was the Carrie dress by Melissa Sweet. The detailing of the pleating on the bottom of the dress was my favorite part. When I told the boys (at the rehearsal) that they would be carrying my train I think they were pretty excited. The next day I was asked, “But Jessie, where’s your train?” I think they were a bit let down that the train was not an actual vehicle, but rather the back of my dress. I also loved my shoes, they were the perfect color, were comfortable and added a bit of fun to my attire. My bouquet was so beautiful, it was many shades of creams and pale, pale pinks and yellows, it was wrapped with a beautiful light pink silk ribbon which Daniela made to echo the bottom pleating on my dress, also on my bouquet was a beautiful locket which was my grandmother’s. It was so special to have something of hers with me on that day, it helped me to remember that even though she is no longer with us she was there with me.

My husband and all the groomsmen wore yellow argyle socks to add a bit of fun as well as a nod to my husband’s huge love of golf. For our rehearsal dinner we took everyone mini-golfing a a great local, outdoor course. All of the men wore three piece gray suits, we wanted them to wear something that was not quite as dark and harsh as a black tux, but still formal. The gray seemed to fit our outdoor wedding better. My husband wore a cream tie, the groomsmen wore yellow and gray striped ties and our dads wore coordinating pink and gray striped ties. The little boys all wore gray suits as well with cream ties to match my husband’s.

My bridesmaids wore buttery yellow dresses with a waist band and straps that echoed my dress. They wore adorable cream heels with a little bow on the front. Isabella, my flower girl wore a smocked, cream dress which matched mine in color and was a classic little girls dress. She also wore her hair to match mine and had cute little pink flowers in the back. My mom made Isabella’s flower girl basket and the two ring bearer pillows out of gray silk with beautiful cream and pink silk flowers.

We were married by my pastor under a beautiful metal structure that was adorned with garland and gardenias. Our aisle was heavily petaled with rose petals. We had close family friends play piano and sing during the wedding. It was so special to have close friends have such a personal affect on our ceremony. During the ceremony we lit candles that were protected from the wind by hurricanes. After the ceremony we had a cocktail hour on the patio of the house. We set out water, lemonade and ice tea for our guests in addition to a passed signature drink (vodka lemonade) and passed hors d’oeuvres. Guests had time to socialize and we had a few moments to ourselves before greeting them (this was the best decision, having 15 minutes by ourselves with some snacks). During this time we had 2 of my brothers friends who are amazing musicians play some light music on the piano and guitar.

This was also where guests got their table assignments. I filled small envelopes with cards that contained the guests names on the front and table name on the back. These were attached to cream ribbons that were tied between two topiaries. After the cocktail hour the guests were welcomed into an open tent by our amazing dj. In order to help guest tables to get to know each other and feel comfortable he had each table sing a song with the word “love” in it. This was how they were dismissed to the dinner buffet. We had a lot of kids at our wedding (we had 6 child attendants, plus others present) so we had a kids buffet for them to enjoy. Each place setting was marked with the guests’ names, I created these place cards and my mom, my matron-of-honor and I put them on each napkin by wrapping the napkin with ribbon which was threaded through the place cards. Inside each napkin we tucked a menu card which I had designed. Our table names were attached with cream ribbon to clear mini cake stands which were filled with our favorite chocolates, raspberry truffles from Moonstruck Chocolate (my husband had lived in Portland, OR the year leading up to our wedding and Moonstruck is a local company, we loved going there for chocolates and hot chocolate treats in the winter). Each chocolate was adorned with a small pink flower on top. This was a great after dinner treat for our guests.

One of our favorite touches and most beloved by guests was our candy bar. My parents and I designed and created the whole thing. My dad built the candy bar structure to look like a lemonade stand or carnival stand. I painted the stripes on the canvas which we then hung on the wooden structure. My mom and I searched high and low for all the pink, peach, yellow and cream candy, as well as the stands and jars. My mom sewed the peach, pink and yellow flags that hung over and under the bar. I designed all the labels and covered milk and dark chocolate bars in papers that I had designed as well. People went crazy for the candy bar, it was so much fun!

For favors for our guests we made mini wedding cakes made from a favorite family recipe. My mom baked hundreds of cookies in three sizes. A family friend, my aunt, my mom and myself all got together one day to actually put the cookie cakes together. We stacked 3 big, 3 medium and 2 small cookies together then placed a sugar flower on top, they were then placed into clear boxes and tied with a light pink ribbon.

Our wedding was exactly what we wanted it to be romantic, beautiful, personal, soft, classic and elegant. While the wedding was beautiful the best part was marrying each other. Saying our vows to each other was emotional and perfect. The happiness of our day is what truly stands out to me. We felt completely surrounded by love and support all throughout the day. Looking back on our day we are so happy to know that our family and friends not only loved the beauty of our ceremony and reception, but that they also had a blast partying the night away with us to celebrate our new marriage. We all danced late into the night, the dance floor was always full and always joyous! It was fun to celebrate with everyone we love.

From John and his ridiculously gorgeous bride, Nikki…

Our wedding was a second for both of us, so we wanted it to reflect our personalities and the personality of the location where we were having it – not so much about all the traditional bells and whistles of a first marriage.

I took Nikki to Nantucket for the first time one month after we met for a weekend away at my aunt’s island home. It was the place where we first professed our love for one another. She in fact, told me that very weekend that she would marry me if I were to ask her right there while we were having our morning coffee (I waited 2 more months). That turned out to be the very spot, on the back yard patio, where we exchanged our vows.

Nantucket became a magical and special place for both of us, as a result.

When I proposed, it seemed only right that we would get married at the spot where we first told each other we loved one another. My aunt’s home was the perfect spot for a wedding – traditional Cape Cod colonial surrounded by lush blue hydrangeas. A long, winding driveway, lined with olive trees and covered with crushed white oyster shells.
