Right off the bat, I knew I wanted to have a super creative, unique, and FUN wedding… and like nothing my guests had seen before, so I decided to design the day from scratch. Being super crafty anyway, I was thrilled to craft our wedding by hand. I was going for glamorous, funky, and really romantic – and I wanted our guests to have a blast!

I was inspired by the colors and textures of Dia De Los Muertos (the day after our wedding) but didn’t want to have skulls all over the place. So our wedding was full of bright colors, feathers, and tons of paper flowers and poms! All of the flowers (made of tissue paper) were handmade by me and my sweet friends. We also glittered lots of different sized pumpkins and set them among centerpieces, and put together a candy buffet that matched our colors. It was on Halloween, after all! I also made our hair fascinators, bridesmaids’ bouquets, flowergirl wand, bouts, and corsages. It was so special to see all the people we care about wearing one of a kind pieces!

My then-fiance and I realized that puzzles are a significant part of our love story, so we incorporated them into lots of our decor. (Years ago, when we were broken up for a few years, I knew Scott was the man I was going to marry… though he definitely didn’t know it yet. For Valentine’s day, I mailed him a handmade heart shaped puzzle that simply said, “Love is patient,” when put together. And how true that turned out to be! We also both love to do puzzles- something we didn’t know about each other.) Our escort cards were puzzle pieces – guests turned over their puzzle piece to see a pattern, and then searched out the other 9 people with the same pattern. Once the pieces were fit together, the puzzle revealed their table number! Secretly, it was also a fun way to break the ice and get everyone chatting with each other. We also included puzzle pieces in lots of other places; you’ll find them peeking out of bouquets, boutonnieres, programs…

We included what we call our “power couple” name – Scigitte (Scott and Brigitte) – in a lot of our wedding elements. We custom-designed Converse shoes for Scott and his groomsmen with Scigitte on them, and we even had our wedding website at Scigitte.com. To this day, our friends still call us that!

The very best part of our wedding day by FAR was our first kiss – when we got back together, we decided not to kiss until our wedding day. It was hard, but it was well worth it. It was the most incredible, special thing, and definitely the crowning jewel of a perfect day. Although I’m sure our guests would say the best part was the photobooth! We also got to have one of our favorite bands, the Pawnshop Kings, come and perform our first dance song called “You and No Other.” Our Same Day Edit was also amazing and had all our guests in tears. There were so many incredibly special things that happened that day, its hard to pick a favorite!

We left the reception through an aisle of sparklers waved by our friends and family. Our getaway car was a gorgeous 1930′s Rolls Royce – a very sweet surprise from Scott!

It was an amazing day – perfectly us from start to finish, and the best way to start a marriage to the man I’m more in love with every day.

From the Bride…Curtis and I met while working in the same research lab. We were also both students, so when we decided to get married, budget was our first priority. We wanted a practical wedding that would reflect our love as well as who we are without breaking the bank.

We planned an intimate vintage-inspired wedding with 35 guests. I was able to create our invitations, RSVP cards, reception cards, thank you cards, etc. all from just two templates! I made paper and ribbon cones that were filled with flowers and lined the aisles of the church. They provided the perfect simple elegance to accent the historic feel of our location. I also combed Etsy looking for other perfect details including hand made feather boutonnieres, jewelry made from mismatched vintage pendants, and matching vintage compasses to symbolize our love, forever guiding us toward one another. We made sure to add in plenty of other personal and unique details too, like an engraving on my engagement ring that inspired subtle fleur de lis decorations throughout our day including our use of lilies and irises in the flowers.

The ceremony was held in the historic St. John Church in downtown Houston. The cute antique country church is set against the Houston skyline and provided the perfect backdrop – a blend of the modern world with the historic, hometown feel. We had a short “cake and champagne” reception but instead of cake we served whoopie pies, a New England favorite straight from my family’s Maine heritage. Instead of a traditional guest book, we selected individual postcards with vintage love-related images and a vintage birdcage to hold the cards. It was such a treat to read the comments, advice and fun answers that our family and friends left for us! I definitely feel like it was the personal touches that made our day so special, from my little sister’s ring pouch, to the inspiration from my engagement ring and the whoopie pies from my childhood summers in Maine and so many other small details that made our wedding day truly unique.

From the crazy talented bride… When Jeremy and I envisioned our wedding day, we wanted it to be really personal. I’m a designer and he’s a song writer, so we spent a lot of time and energy on pretty visuals and our music selection. I own a boutique and we chose to host our ceremony on the third floor of our building, above my shop. The space is open with huge windows and peeling wallpaper. The ceilings are partially exposed. It’s a really amazing old building. We loved the idea of holding our ceremony here because we knew we’d be the first couple ever to get married in that spot! Our aisle was covered in white feathers and the flower girls threw colored feathers as they walked down the aisle.

My sister walked down the aisle with her puppy. That was our “something borrowed” from a friend’s wedding last year. Our family has a love for pugs (we have three) so I’m happy that one of them got to walk down the aisle!

For the dresses I chose vintage lace inspired dresses with bright jewel toned tights. The girls had amazing beehives and looked like they came straight out of a 50s movie! My dress was by Orla Kiely. She’s my all time favorite designer, so it only seemed right.

After our rehearsal dinner we had a bouquet making party. All of the girls made their own bouquet. I loved how each one was different. We made velvet flowers and mixed them with roses, daisies and feathers. I made all the boutonnieres with pretty feathers I found on Etsy. They were really fun to make and even cuter than flowers, I thought. I made my grandmothers’ corsages with feathers and vintage brooches and our mothers’ bouquets with feather birds.

Our reception was styled with vintage lamps, lace and jewel tones. My favorite details were the raspberry cupcakes and the hand painted holga cameras on the tables. We chose signature cocktails and my favorite was the raspberry mojito. For dinner, we chose heart shaped pancakes.

My favorite memory from the reception was when we were dancing. I told Jeremy that I was so happy and he said, “I’m sad it’s almost over.” I thought that was cute. Always a good thing to hear from your husband after so many long months of wedding planning!

In our memories the day has a warm glow about it. We loved every moment!

From the Bride… I had always had an image of what I wanted my wedding day to look like: a Hollywood style love story with the big white dress, beautiful flowers and the perfect groom. After college, a mutual friend introduced me to my now-husband and I knew from our very first date, that Josh was the man I had always pictured walking down the aisle towards. After Josh and I became engaged, we immediately decided on a destination wedding, to get out of our harsh Midwestern winters and marry under the warm sun in St. Augustine, Florida, with our family and closest friends.

The phrase “Old Hollywood Glamour” quickly became the wedding’s inspiration, and after visiting the Club Continental, we knew this venue was it. It is a historic Mediterranean-style estate located on the banks of the St. John’s River.  This was the ideal location because it captured the perfect combination of Old Hollywood elegance, romance and glamour that we wanted for our perfect day. The natural beauty of the Club was emphasized with fresh white roses lining the aisle and the river provided an immaculate backdrop with the water glistening from the sunshine.

The bridesmaids (my four sisters and two best friends) wore deep pewter Alfred Sung dresses, in different styles to capture everyone’s unique personality. The bouquets by Liz Stewart’s Flowers Design were a bundle of rich fuchsia to give the glamorous pop of color that I wanted. The groomsmen (Josh’s brother and five best friends) wore traditional black tuxedos to play up the red carpet vibe. It was the perfect color combination as the bridal party framed the alter for our vows. My bouquet was one of my absolute favorite things. It was a romantic assortment of white and pale pink roses and hydrangeas, while touches of white feathers and sparkle were added throughout. Secured with a crystal broach, it gave me the added “glam” touch.

After the ceremony, guests indulged in gourmet appetizers and cocktails on the front terrace of the Club as a five piece string quartet provided a joyful ensemble for the hour. Guests made their way into the reception, where tables were draped in a combination of high and low soft white flower arrangements with crystal garland cascading from the vases, creating an eye-catching amount of sparkle throughout the room.

In lieu of a guest book, we asked each of our family and friends to write Josh and I  a “wish” for our future and hang it on a tree. Another special twist that Josh and I made to personalize our special night was to combine our favorite desserts- cupcakes and canoli’s instead of a traditional wedding cake. We danced the night away in celebration of our new life together.

It was a day that Josh and I will never forget- a love story pulled right out of a movie. My dream day had finally become reality and we were so grateful to have been able to share this special day with our family and friends, it wouldn’t have been the same without them.

From Kendall ….. at Eclatante Event Design …

Kelly & Josh were two of the most wonderful people we have ever met. Very urban, very chic and very unusual, they had definite ideas about certain things they wanted at their wedding.

First, Josh is a true connoisseur of cocktails – an expert, of sorts, on the prohibition era. Which we loved, because it created an extremely interesting backdrop for the design and details for their wedding. We brought in a stunning solid wood bar that was created for a speakeasy. Josh carefully chose the drinks that would be available at the bars – there were only four of them. We arranged to have the specially chosen bartenders attend a dress rehearsal where they learned, not only how to make these very special drinks, but how to move, how to speak to the guests and how to dress. We provided them with the authentic details that dressed them up that day. There were “House Rules” as there were in the Chicago Speakeasies and recipe cards for the guests for each of the four drinks. The guests were totally charmed by all the details. It was truly amazing.

The tables, too, were designed to reflect this very specific era. Rather than have typical centerpieces, we created, instead, a look that incorporated lamps and ashtrays and other elements that you might find on the table at a Speakeasy. Inside the ashtrays and other vessels, Beautiful Blooms placed absolutely amazing freeze-dried and hand-painted green roses. We also used pheasant feathers because it just seemed to work! And, if you look closely, you’ll notice that some of the tables are parsons tables covered with faux ostrich leather.

One more little tidbit – Kelly & Josh met on Craig’s List. We thought it would be charming to print their initial emails to each other on cocktail napkins.

Wedding style?  “Vintage Couture”  ~ I like that! An upscale ballroom setting with the glitz and glamour we’ve all come to know and love!

Today’s featured Little Black Book Member is Amy Pezzicara at Pezz Photo in Florida. Before we elaborate about this breathtaking wedding, we want to tell you about one of those “fashion emergencies” that all brides pray won’t happen to them!

It wouldn’t be a wedding to remember without having a fashion emergency! Just as Amy Pezzicara (my amazing photographer) was about to take some pictures around the hotel with us, my sister went to hand me my purse to fix my lipstick and out fell my glass bottle of foundation which broke and splattered all up the side of my dress! I like to say I was “fashionably an hour late” to my wedding ceremony.

Amy said, “Her bottle of foundation fell out, shattering on the floor and exploding all over her dress. We spent the next 45 minutes removing the makeup with toothbrushes and cleaning fluid. Lindsay kept a smile on her face the whole time!”

Can you imagine?? What a trooper! Apparently she just took it in stride and went on with the festivities!

Lindsay is well versed in unexpected wedding emergencies … she, herself, is a wedding planner|coordinator at the same venue that she was getting married ~ A La Carte Event Pavillion, one of Tampa’s premier event venues!

My dress is a Maggie Sottero called “Jolie”. It was purchased at CC’s Boutique in St. Petersburg, Florida. The dress is an A-line dress accented with glass beads, lace and crystals with a sweetheart neckline. This dress is made from taffeta, which is the only material I wanted to wear. I love taffeta and the noise it makes when you move. To keep with our vintage theme, I chose to wear a birdcage veil, also from  CC’s Boutique. They had just acquired this headpiece from a show in France. I loved it immediately and it really finished off the look of my dress.  I got the idea to wear blue Kate Spade shoes after watching the Sex and the City movie; Kerri wore blue shoes under her wedding dress for something blue… and I thought, “WOW! I should do that!” The bridesmaid dresses were by Bill Levkoff ~taupe taffeta dresses accented with pale pink and Mary Jane style high heels. I gave them vintage bracelets for their bridesmaids gifts. The guys wore tuxedos from Sacino’s Formal Wear. To go with our “vintage couture” theme, we chose a modern ascot tie (without the puff).

My ceremony inspiration was created by A La Carte Event Pavilion’s event designer Corina Wian-Literski. The concept included a keyhole-shaped ceremony space with a circular wall of fabric. Our ceremony took place in the middle of all our family and friends.

After the ceremony, the fabric was pulled back to reveal our reception room. Amazing!

The tall centerpieces had light pink hydrangeas, pink peonies, pink roses, yellow roses for dimension, light pink tea roses and green spider mums placed on a tall glass pilsner vase accented with vintage pearls. The shorter centerpieces were crystal table candelabras accented with the same flowers as the tall ones. We wanted dimension in the room, so that is why we alternated tall and short centerpieces. Half the guest tables were covered in a light pink linen underlay with an ivory lace overlay. The other half of the guest tables had light pink linens with apple green satin napkins. I choose gold chargers to match the gold chiavari chairs. All stationery on the tables were provided by Paper Players out of Dunedin, Florida.

Amy Pezzicara sent Lindsay’s wedding into us during fashion week. Lindsay’s vintage couture “look” was indeed divine!!

In addition to firmly believing that every bride and groom NEED to capture their marriage on video (see Friday’s LBB post!) … we firmly believe that everyone needs the added support of a wedding planner. Whether your wedding is small and intimate or huge and lavish ~ you need an advocate. You need someone to help you piece the puzzle together, a shoulder to lean on when you’re so busy at work that you don’t know how it’s all going to come together … someone who knows the ropes and will assure that you have an exquisite experience!

And so today, we bring you Lorie & Jason’s intimate and exquisite wedding from Crystal at Distinct Occasions in Toronto ~ wedding planner & designer, extraordinaire ~

One thing is certain ~ Lorie is one stylish bride in the city! She has a sense of just who she is and what it was that she wanted from her wedding day. Her groom, Jason, was just as forthcoming as we forged ahead in an enchanted forest theme. Their ceremony was held with them standing in the middle of their guests. Personally written vows, feather-girls instead of flowergirls, a bride who skipped the bouquet and opted for her groom’s arm … plenty of champagne, a photo booth and a guest who painted a killer portrait of the couple as her gift! This was truly a celebration to remember.

When planning the wedding, we were lucky enough to get connected with Crystal Adair-Benning of Distinct Occasions through a mutual friend. She helped us filter our ideas and really figure out what was important to us on our wedding day. One thing Jason and I knew right away and brought to Crystal was that we wanted our wedding to be an incredible party. We wanted fun. To make that happen, we decided the night should be about our favorite things: delicious food, plentiful drink, good music, dancing into the wee hours of the morning and our amazing friends and family. And we knew we wanted to look gorgeous,too!

When choosing my bridal look, I decided to keep the dress simple and get really gorgeous accessories. It all started when I spotted a pair of fuchsia satin Stuart Weitzman shoes. I had also dreamed of wearing feathers in my hair. I had a custom piece made by Nicole McInnis of Dina! My hairdresser Loretta, gave me a gorgeous up do that was edgy and romantic. Along with my hair, the feather headpiece and veil was the part of my outfit I loved the most. A close second was my jewelry, which I found at Mink, one of my favorite stores in Toronto. I had chosen a three-strand grey pearl necklace and bracelet. My dress was a metallic taffeta gown from Nicole Miller, which was reminiscent of the oyster shells that first inspired us and had an organic feel to it. As for bridal make-up, I enlisted my old friend Patricia Burton-Williams, a talented make-up artist. I definitely felt like the goddess of an Enchanted Forest.

Our original inspirations for the look and feel of the event were extremely varied: oyster shells and their beautiful iridescence, feathers and their playfulness, a recent trip to Paris and our love affair with the macaron. The theme evolved from there once we had chosen our invitations from Wedding Paper Divas ~ they were called Enchanted Forest. The illustration featured one pink bird and one green bird perched in branches. So we worked with Crystal to create our own Enchanted Forest (or “forêt enchantée,” as we’d say in our ridiculously bad French accents!) with all the glamour of a swanky cocktail party.

For the location of our wedding bash, we chose one of the best restaurants in town, Canoe. With Canoe’s reputation for their food and impeccable service — plus that view from 54 floors up! — we knew people would show up ready to party. We didn’t want to kill the vibe by dividing people up into tables for a seated dinner so we brought the food to the people… in enormous amounts! With that in mind, we opted for a cocktail reception immediately after an intimate ceremony right at our venue. And are we ever glad we did — it was everything we wanted and more. Our wedding planner really listened to us and helped us make the decisions we needed to in order to get the whole thing right.

We selected a lengthy menu of hors d’oeuvres including lamb, sablefish, terrine of foie gras, and wild mushroom tartlettes. Plus we had a raw bar filled with oysters on the half shell, scallop ceviche, shrimp cocktails and lobster salad. The food was outstanding and the service flawless. The bartenders (who were a highlight of the reception), realizing they had a drinking crowd, had a blast making old school cocktails for our savvy guests. Not a dry soul in the room.

As for the music – an all-important factor! — we asked a handful of our friends to DJ. Crystal, our wedding planner, was a bit nervous about involving such a DIY element in the evening but we put Jason’s brother, Don, in charge, along with a few more friends who are musicians, sound engineers and people we considered to have excellent taste in music!

We asked them to create sets in different styles for various parts of the night for us. For example, we had a big-band jazz set for the receiving line and early-evening mingling, and a smooth “yacht rock” set during the first round of cocktails. Next we had old-school soul and funk after the speeches to get folks dancing. Everyone we enlisted pulled it off and the result was an incredibly interactive evening with a packed dance floor (and even an impromptu tribute to Lady Gaga, complete with DJs in tin-foil costumes!).

As for décor, some of my favorite touches were definitely our centerpieces designed by Nicole at Petals,Stems & Leaves! They were all different and incorporated branches, moss, orchids and bird cages (not to mention the feather wands for our feather-girls!). We LOVED them! We also absolutely loved our macaron tower from Bobette & Belle with the macarons themselves in our wedding colors: pinks and greens. The result resembled a tree and was situated on a pedestal in the center of the room and next to the dance floor. All eyes were on it all night. After we had a chance to feed each other a few tidbits, our guests could dance over and pluck a perfect macaron from the tower.

We also made sure that the room was filled with candles and had satiny rosette pillows placed all around the window seats so guests could sit comfortably to take in the view.

Two other elements made the day outstanding for us. First was our ceremony. Our wedding planner hooked us up with an absolutely amazing officiant. He helped us customize our ceremony and vows, guided us in selecting our readings, and delivered an outstanding ceremony. It was intimate, full of love and meaning while being playful and passionate. Everyone was rapt during and we received so many compliments on the ceremony itself and our officiant.

Finally, we thank our photographer, Kevin Charlie. As soon as Jason and I had our date picked, we booked Kevin, who was also a friend of mine. He has such an eye and is a pleasure to work with — we knew Kevin would capture all the beauty and fun the day would contain. From family portraits that the parents loved to the candid shots that made us smile, he got it all. Also, as a part of our package, he created a hardcover book of our favorite images — the result looked less like a typical wedding album than a beautiful art book. The photos resemble magazine shots, and when we look through it, it tells the story of our day. It’s as if we’re able to relive the whole event every time we leaf through the pages, which is a feeling we’ll always treasure.

from Martha … Nicole and Justin’s wedding took place at The Citizen in downtown Sacramento. The Citizen is a beautiful historic building that was made into a boutique hotel. The planners were Lisa and Marci with A Joyous Occasion .

Lisa is an artist and created the logo on the couple’s invitation. This logo was carried throughout the wedding ~ the petal aisle at the ceremony, lighting on the walls of the reception and even on the wedding night bed. There were so many lovely touches. After the ceremony on the tented 7th floor terrace, the guests went down to the scandal bar in the hotel for cocktail hour. Meanwhile the terrace was reconfigured for dinner, along with a lounge. Feathers and crystals were featured everywhere, with crystals strung with flowers hung from the chandeliers.

A canvas and paints were provided for all the guests to add a stroke to what would become a piece of art to hang in the couples home.

What a fantastic idea and great memento from the day!
