From the bride… When we first got engaged, hitting the blogs and creating my “vision” was clearly my first task. I’m very detail oriented (or OCD, as my husband says) and soon created a Powerpoint presentation, a Pinterest page and started the “Wedding” bookmark tab on my Macbook. But since then, I’ve learned two things: (1) my vision must really be our vision, and (2) despite any planning you do, whatever happens on that momentous day will be an exact reflection of the two of you … and it will be perfect. 

Our goal was to create an experience that was distinctively Californian as 80% of our guests were flying in for the event. We’re both from the Midwest (Chicago and Detroit), but we met in LA and fell in love in there.  A stunning ocean view coupled with the backdrop of the Malibu hills and canyons served as a perfect Southern Californian setting. Our charming little venue captured our fondness for wine country with vineyards and an olive orchard in the backyard. The farmhouse cottage where the ceremony was held topped the Malibu hills and married our enchanted-garden-meets-vintage-ranch vision seamlessly.  Although it was a sweltering day that had us practically melting, by the time the ceremony started, a cool breeze wafted through the ceremony space and I knew everything would be perfect.

Since this was mainly was a DIY event, I relied heavily on my friend/planner/visionary to execute my plans. Another dear friend designed our save the dates and yet another, the flowers. My mom sewed our burlap runners and wrote the most amazing and funny speech. Our photographers were outstanding. Justin picked the caterer (a work friend whose food rivaled 5-star restaurants), created the all-important drink menu and stocked the bar with his favorites.  He also handpicked every song outside of the dance section, so the music we love and live our lives to filled the day. Our dear friends played acoustic guitar and cello and sang our favorite songs during the procession, which ended with Big Star’s “I’m in Love with a Girl.” We wrote our own vows and cried and beamed through every word. As I slipped his grandfather’s ring on his finger, I looked out to the crowd and saw four generations of our family, sitting together in the shade and knew I would never forget this moment. Overall, I think we achieved the rustic California garden feel with little effort and minimal day-of stress. Since we both have insanely busy work lives, many of the ideas we originally brought to the table were cut from the show — but it simply didn’t matter. We were so thankful to have both of our families together at our sun-filled venue and to share our love and happiness with them that we didn’t notice the little things that fell through the cracks. And to hear from our guests, that it was the most beautiful wedding they had been to, with the best food and music, still makes us smile. After six years together, we thought getting married wouldn’t really change our day-to-day life, but it absolutely has. Marriage is truly utter bliss.

From the bride… Will and I decided to have an intimate Catholic ceremony for immediate family two days before our outdoor ceremony and reception. At first, I was a little anxious and overwhelmed at the idea of two weddings, but in the end the first ceremony was truly beautiful and took a lot of pressure off the big wedding day that I put so much time and energy into planning. Even though most of our guests didn’t know it, Will and I were already legally married at our big wedding, which made me feel a lot more relaxed!

As far as the planning process went, I knew I wanted our wedding to be soft, whimsical, light, and airy from the very beginning.  I had the idea of a beautiful, fantastical tea party set in the middle of a forest and with the help of our amazing planner, Ryan, and our friends and family, the idea grew and changed into something more perfect than I could have ever imagined. Our ceremony location had this breathtaking view of vineyards and mountains, so we really let the backdrop do the talking and kept the space natural and fairly clean for the ceremony and vows. We were able to have a lot of fun with our reception area, however, using the bell tower for our grand entrance and creating an intimate space for dinner, cocktails, and dancing with a long grand table, vintage furniture, floating fabric lanterns, and twinkling lights.

I was really into the little touches that made our day different. My sister Gina created our beautiful ribbon table runner for our head table. We had the idea of making vintage dance cards for our escort cards and included rustic mini pencils so our guests could fill them out throughout the evening. Our amazing graphic designer worked with us to craft some fun vintage Valentine-themed cards that sat at each place setting that either had “five things his family should know about her” or vice-versa. I really enjoyed collecting the mismatched vases, teapots, cups, and containers that we used for our floral arrangements, and one of my favorite touches was the collection of vintage thimbles I acquired over the year that we let our guests take home as kisses for the day (inspired by my favorite Peter Pan quote). As we got closer and closer to the wedding, people kept reminding me that things would go wrong and I should be prepared. And I was completely prepared. But to be totally honest, I was just so thrilled the entire day and could not have been happier. I married my best friend and had the time of my life. The speeches, the dress, the weather, the man … to me, it was all perfect. Right out of a fairytale.

From Erin Hearts Court…For the wedding day, the two had decided to base their ceremony on the important aspects from both Ben’s and Tim’s favorite traditions, including a number of elements from Jewish weddings.  Tim had long chided Ben for his “signature color” orange sunglasses, watch, shoes, cookware, and keepsakes; so it was only a natural that orange feature prominently along with Tim’s purple into the tulips and hyacinths, lighted LED waterbead vases, water bottles, and even orange and purple yamikas.  They had water bottles with custom labels telling vignettes about how they met (collect all four!), and instead of place cards, made tins of custom printed M&M’s in orange and purple, each displaying a photo of this or that groom or the event date, and covered with a label indicating the guest’s name and table assignment.   As guests walked in, they were greeted with French 75’s – Tim’s signature cocktail – to get the festive mood started.  But when the ceremony began with the stiffly traditional Trumpet Voluntary, one close friend stood up and put a stop to the ceremony.  “What’s this music?  This is supposed to be a GAY wedding!” he shouted.  On cue, the DJ changed it up to the Glee Cast singing Marry Me, and the couple’s friends danced in, pair by pair, to everyone’s delight.

During their ceremony, the grooms stood under a chuppah made from Ben’s tallit as their longtime friend Larry officiated with notes on his iPad; and seven friends and family members each offered their own blessings to the couple.  They also continued a tradition from Tim’s family:  sealing in a box a special private letter from each to the other along with a bottle of wine, to be read only if the marriage should ever be on the brink (hopefully never); or else to celebrate at their 25th anniversary (and they’ve already booked the Colony Palms Hotel for everyone to come celebrate in 2036).  But the best part, according to all the guests, were the stories that Tim and Ben read aloud to one another under the chuppah:  while they hadn’t compared notes beforehand, the two echoed each other fatefully and deeply meaningfully, as they put into relief the surprise and gratitude each felt to be with the other.  Tim, a master of sentimentality, even commented that he had saved the cocktail napkin Ben wrote notes on the night they met in 2004… and then produced it from his pocket to wipe a tear from Ben’s eyes right there.  At the end of the ceremony, Tim fulfilled the tradition of breaking a glass with his foot – in this case an orange “signature colored” wine glass that Tim’s sister had given Ben –and the officiant ceremoniously announced that “You may now change your Facebook relationship status to married.”

Champagne was passed to guests as they migrated from the ceremony lawn to the poolside to start cocktails at dusk, before candlelight dinner was served at tables all around the pool.  The dancing started with a firework – literally, Katy Perry’s Firework – and included side trips to play costume dress up in the photo booth, to stand and enjoy the slide show of family and friends projected on the sidewall, and to rough and tumble in the grown-up bouncy house.  At midnight, some paused to grab a milkshake or to make their own burger from the midnight burger bar; and by 2am, as though it were inevitable, guests ended up in the pool – in a mix of dresses, suits, and skivvies.  And then, on Sunday, the two hosted all the guests at the luxe Palm D’Or residence on the property for an all-day open house, with a rotating menu of new meals and specialty cocktails every two hours. Friends came, ate, mingled, and meandered back to the pool and back to the house for more quality time.  For Tim and Ben, the most important part was getting to spend so much time with people who are so important in their lives.  But the ultimate compliment was the number of people who summed it up with this:  “I’m going to have to go to more gay Jewish weddings.”

Our wedding could only be a travel theme! I’d grown up in five countries, my husband and I were long-distance for two years, and when I finally moved to Singapore, where I was born and he grew up, we both took jobs that sent us out of the country five days a week. In the six years before we got engaged, I worked in ten countries, and he worked in five. We’d have dates at the airport lounge and buy household toiletries in duty-free. He proposed in International Arrivals after I got off a 16-hour flight, with a five-meter red banner that read, “AMY WILL YOU MARRY ME?” Finally, we were making our guests fly to Bali with us for a destination wedding. We had to laugh at it all!

We set a lighthearted mood with a Save-the-Date that read, “After Chasing Each Other Around the World, Amy and TQ are Finally Settling Down.”  A map tracked our various travels together, with a big heart over Bali. Our invitation told our story over three accordion folds, fastened with an airplane sticker. Guests’ welcome bags held, amongst other goodies, a bottle of citronella oil to ward off tropical mosquitoes. Our welcome dinner featured a pub quiz organized around cities we’d visited. As favors, we designed a CD mix called “Around the World with TQ and Amy,” featuring our favorite world music with personalized liner notes. We had programs shaped like luggage tags and airplane confetti, punched out of map pages, at our Western ceremony. Lastly, at the reception, we had a photo booth with travel props like suitcases. Our tables were named after cities, and our menu was divided into “Take-off” (appetizers), “Cruising” (mains), and “Landing” (desserts).

Indonesia was significant to us because TQ had been a diplomat in Jakarta, and I had worked in the country for a few years. In addition to our colors – chartreuse, charcoal, and plum – we incorporated a traditional Yogyakarta batik print into our paper goods, table settings, and groomsmen’s custom shirts. Even though our ceremony was very modern, we added some Indonesian touches in the rindik music at our ceremony (well, before the Beatles came on), the family-style Indonesian-Western reception dinner, and a coffee bar with joe from all over Indonesia. We unexpectedly had to draw on a very traditional Balinese resource too: the tukang terang, a rain-stopping mystic, who worked miracles in pushing the looming rainclouds away from our ceremony site. Being ethnic Chinese, we also worked in a Chinese tea ceremony and traditional yam seng toast, punctuated by fireworks.

A vacation in Bali, we hoped, would be a great way for loved ones from different parts of our lives to befriend one another. We booked the entire resort for our wedding party, which contributed to an unhurried feel. Our guests went on organized outings together, like elephant rides and a volcano trek. By the end of the wedding, they were taking vacations together. Almost a year on, my husband and I have moved from Singapore to Boston, and are continuing our adventures!

From Cassandra… Andrea + Phinny… that is probably the only way to start to explain the connection of a pair truly in love, silently romantic, outrageously funny and soon-to-be parents, our bride and groom. These two clever people met on the stage at their theater company and both hit the mark in compatibility. Phinny’s quiet nature allowed for Andrea’s fun filled heart to shine on their wedding day in Malibu, California at Saddle Rock Ranch. While honoring Andrea’s jewish heritage with a beautiful handmade chuppah, the wood arbor provided for a ceremony full of laughter. Many friends participated with musical jingles, full chorus line productions and tibetan sound bowls. Family was certainly a highlight of the day as was a playful school theme (both Andrea & Phinny are teachers) seen throughout with chalkboard signage, wood cut table numbers and an invitation suite that recalled “The Giving Tree” by Shell Silverstein, a classic kids book (created by Hello Lucky!). Their catering selection was of the utmost importance and standard “wedding fare” would not stand a chance on these foodies pallets. Heirloom Catering created a beautiful family style meal that fit the bill along with custom cocktails that were fresh pressed earlier that day. Michael Antonia of Flashdance had the barefoot party swaying along to a mix of oldies and hip-sets that kept this Sunday wedding going well into the night.

Our ceremony and cocktail hour were held at the Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills, tucked away from the city in a quiet garden. We had originally envisioned a modern wedding in an industrial space, but as the planning process unfolded that vision completely changed. My mother owned a store that sold antique furniture when I was young, and images from that part of my life ended up guiding the design. I started with a paisley-patterned fabric for inspiration. I ended up using this fabric throughout the wedding, and the invitations and cake were both designed with the print in mind.

It was important to us to include Persian traditions in our ceremony, representing the blending of our families and our cultures. In one tradition, women who are happily married sprinkle sugar over the couple to symbolize sweetness in the marriage, while in another ritual the bride and groom give each other a taste of honey. We knew the ceremony would be amazing, but had no idea how profound those short twenty minutes would be. Amir’s uncle served as our officiant, and had us laughing and crying from one minute to the next! The ceremony so perfectly reflected our personalities, and was truly amazing.

After the ceremony we celebrated at the London West Hollywood Hotel, where hand- picked and hand-made items were incorporated into the decor. My mom collected an assortment of blue vases from e-bay that we used as centerpieces. Amir and my dad also helped by restoring old frames we picked up at thrift shops to use in the escort card display.

Our guests danced the night away and hammed it up at the photo kiosk, which was an absolute hit! Later in the night we were surprised by an on-the-spot spoken word performance and more than one dance-off. What a party! We had an unforgettable day and are beyond blessed be surrounded by so much love.

My husband, Morgan, and I were married this past August 2010 at Shade Hotel in Manhattan Beach, CA.  I was never the girl who pictured or planned her wedding growing up, but sure enough, soon after we got engaged, we had a very clear picture of the wedding we wanted.  We are natural party hosts; one of our favorite activities is having people at our home.  We wanted the wedding to feel like our parties do:  free flowing, fun, and filled with lots of good music, food, and drink.  With that image in mind, we began planning the wedding design and style.

As soon as we moved to Manhattan Beach after college, I fell in love with Shade Hotel.  It is modern, clean, and simple—a style that describes our taste perfectly.  Shade’s unique layout made us think differently about the flow of the wedding.  We had no assigned seats, all different types of seating, and stations all around the courtyard for the food.  We had rented the entire small hotel out, so the weekend felt like a long slumber party with our closes family and friends.

Shade had recommended Carissa from JL DESIGNS for our florist, and she really helped my vision come to life.  Not only were her florals gorgeous, she really took the role as the event designer and helped us get the right rentals and linens in place.  We went with green and white flowers and included some of my favorites, tulips, cala lilies, orchids, and succulents.  One of my favorite parts is the fact that each of my bridesmaids carried a bouquet of a different green flower.  They looked beautiful held against their gray J.Crew bridesmaid dresses.

As for the other details, design-savvy Morgan designed our invitations, website, and paper goods, we used our friends at Jamaica’s Cakes for our delicious cake, bought tons of details from different Etsy vendors, had the same ceremony guitarist from my parents’ wedding (with some of the same Cat Stevens songs.)  Luckily, our wonderful photographers, Erin Hearts Court, beautifully captured all of it.

From the Bride…

Everything was memorable! The day was spectacular. I have been going to Keystone with my family for years and Dan and I visit Breckenridge often so Colorado was a perfect place for us to get hitched. We even got engaged in Denver! The day was spectacular! After a gloomy, rainy start, the day brightened and every single second was perfection! It truly does take a village, because my parents, siblings, and bridesmaids all rallied to help us finish a million little details that day. Seeing Dan for our first look was amazing. We were both so excited and happy, and he looked incredibly handsome. The ceremony was unreal. Our dear friend, Granville, was our officiant. He crafted the most beautiful, funny, and touching ceremony. We asked our guests to send us newlywed advice on their reply cards, and Granville made this a really entertaining and heartfelt part of the ceremony. Dan’s sister, Jennifer, sang us an old marriage hymn, a capella. The rain began to fall during our vows, which was so exhilarating and funny! The cocktail party after the ceremony was fabulous. All 97 guests piled into the 120 year old ski lodge to escape the rain, nibbling on the best gourmet hors d’oeuvres on the planet – the mini beef on weck sliders (a Buffalo, NY specialty), Wisconsin bratwurst pig in the blankets, and prosciutto wrapped cantaloupe were our favorites! Everyone was relaxed and happy, sipping sangria while the Spring Creek Bluegrass Band rocked away.

Our reception was gorgeous. I always wanted a restaurant reception in a place with a lot of character. The warm, classic interior was the perfect setting. I wanted the room to glow with candlelight while channeling simple, summer elegance, so we chose lanterns and elegant white hydrangea centerpieces. Our amazing wedding planner, Emily Campbell, and her team set up the room perfectly. We did a surprise in our first dance, which was a blast to do for everyone. And, my hilarious brother Kevin, planned a surprise Lady Gaga ‘Bad Romance’ flash mob dance with all of the bridesmaids. Incredible! We served whoopie pies and the most divine fudgey Bailey’s cupcakes – a perfect sweet note to end the night. We awoke in the morning to 2″ of snow!

We remember so many lovely details from the entire weekend and we’re so grateful to experience this special occasion in our lives with all of our favorite people. I want to personally thank my parents for everything they did to help us have a perfect wedding day. They did so much for us during the months, days, and hours leading up to “I Do”. Also, a heartfelt thank you to Erin & Courtney for capturing our day so beautifully. It was a genuine pleasure to work with them.
