Marty and Kristina met over a decade ago when they were in high school through mutual friends. They met at an event called “Rock the Water Tower,” a fall music festival in Louisville. That was fitting because they have gone on to see over 100 concerts together since they met. Marty went to an all boy’s catholic school & Kristina was at an all girls academy. They instantly became friends and spent every bit a free time together that their parents would allow. They spent most of their “dates” playing video games with friends and at the gym working out. Marty & Kristina both spent a year at the University of Kentucky after high school where Kristina was on the dance team. They quickly discovered that the new city was not for them and moved back home to attend the University of Louisville. Kristina & Marty graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor’s in Nursing & Marketing respectively. Kristina went on to work as a nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at a local children’s hospital and Marty attended the University of Louisville’s law school. Marty is now Assistant prosecutor for the County Attorney in Louisville.

Oddly enough, they never talked about getting married, or engagement rings, it was always understood that they would be together though. Marty popped the question on his mom’s birthday, their nine year anniversary, as a surprise to both of them. And boy was it! Kristina’s mom snapped the perfect picture as Kristina said, “YES”. Kristina’s whole family was there for the big moment and the rest is history.

Marty gave Kristina a gum ball machine ring he found in the junk drawer at his parents’ house, that we later found to glow in the dark. He figured he’d let her choose for herself what she would be wearing for the rest of her life. Kristina wore the hideous pink, glittery, glow in the dark ring proudly until she got the real thing. Now the ring resides in a shadow box in front of the photo captured by Kristina’s mom. They knew they wanted the wedding to be a family affair, so they incorporated as many family members as possible in the ceremony.

They were both raised catholic, so the wedding took place at St. Elizabeth of Hungary in Louisville, where Kristina went to grade school. Marty’s uncle was the priest, his aunts were the cantors, both of their living grandmothers were lectors, his second cousins were the flower girl and ring bearer, and the bride and groom’s sisters were bridesmaids.

The Wedding ceremony was a modern twist on the catholic prayer service. The couple wrote their own vows and included a poem about the hands of the husband and wife and all they will do for another in the future. Their program included a “wedding map”, which mapped out placed in the city where they met, got engaged, where the ceremony, reception, and hotel was located. The program also included a list of 25 things the couple wants to accomplish before their 25th wedding anniversary, and a horoscope that went with the “earthy” theme, entitled, which Tree did you fall from?. 

The bride has always enjoyed crafts, so she decided that she would coordinate, design, and organize the whole event on her own. She was obsessed with bridal inspiration websites throughout the engagement and handmade every decoration used at the wedding and reception with the help of her lovely bridesmaids. The décor was fall themed – earthy, and vintage all in one. Music has always been a huge part of their lives together, so they had a string quartet, harp, and trumpet at the ceremony, which sounded beautiful in the old church.

Upon arrival to the reception, guests found their place cards which were rocks with their names on them. The tables were named after concerts that Marty & Kristina had been to. While the guests waited on the bridal party to arrive, they made themselves busy with the photo booth, and the local art work at the reception site. Kristina painted a bare tree on four separate canvases, and had ink placed next to each one that corresponded to the seasons. Guests used the ink to make thumb prints on the canvas. After the wedding Marty & Kristina were left with four beautiful pieces of art for their home.

Kristina collected wedding photos from parents, grandparents, great grand parents, and even beyond that for a memory table that doubled as a family tree.

On the head table, Kristina made frames for each of the bridal party members with a short biography in them for their place cards. The night was filled with dancing. One of the groomsmen did a Michael Jackson tribute including props. The limbo stick made an appearance, and during one of the DJ sets, glow sticks were handed out to “light” up the dance floor. Overall, the night was full of love, happiness, and just plain fun. A night that no one in attendance will soon forget!

Kyle and I met in college our senior year through mutual friends.  Upon graduation we both moved to Minneapolis and continued our friendship by spending more and more time together until we began dating in 2007.  After two and a half years together, Kyle proposed.  On Valentine’s day, Kyle took me ice skating at our favorite outdoor Minnesota ice rink.  I didn’t think too much of it because we didn’t have any other plans that day and had decided to go ice skating last minute. Kyle’s skating skills have never been impressive; so I was not surprised when he fell to the ground after an aggressive turn.  However, words cannot describe my surprise when rather than crawling to his feet, Kyle instead stayed on one knee and asked me to marry him.  Much to Kyle’s relief, I said yes after spending a few stunned moments on the ice.

We were looking for a venue that was modern, simplistic and had a lot of light. We also planned to have the ceremony outdoors and needed a great space. The Burnsville Performing Arts Center had that modern sleek vibe in the building and also had a beautiful outdoor garden area and amphitheater.   We immediately fell in love with the place.

My inspiration for the wedding was really the colors: yellow and gray. I had seen a gorgeous yellow and gray wedding on Style Me Pretty and fell in love with the color scheme.  I wanted to DIY a lot of items, but also wanted to keep the décor simple and colorful to let the venue shine.  I made chalkboard signs from mirrors, table numbers from scrap wood, made my own hair piece, hand stamped cocktail napkins and spray painted votives gray for the tables. I also found some funky yellow jug and white circle vases on craigslist and used them as my centerpieces.  The florist, Carra Otten, did a beautiful job of seeing my inspiration and putting together amazing arrangements that complimented my DIY projects.

We incorporated a Dutch love letter ritual into our ceremony.  We wrote each other love letters and sealed them in a trunk with a bottle of wine and two glasses.   The trunk will remain sealed until our 5th anniversary when we will drink the wine and read our letters to each other.

I had a brooch added to my bouquet.  It was a gift I had given my grandmother when I was 5 years old. She had held onto it for many years so I wanted to show her how important she is to me. I also had some of my mom’s lace from her wedding dress wrapped around my bouquet.

My most vivid memories are of my first look with my husband and when we released butterflies.  Natalie did a beautiful job of capturing our emotions in the first look.  It was so reassuring to see my future husband and have a few private moments with him before the wedding.  I also loved the butterflies.  The venue had several butterflies flying around and my bridesmaids grabbed a couple for us to release.  It was so much fun, even though I look quite scared in the photos.  My favorite photos also included the ceremony photos. The amphitheater was so beautiful and there is so much emotion in everyone’s faces.

We had frosted sugar cookies from a local non-profit bakery in North Minneapolis that teaches young people employment and interpersonal works skills to prepare them to enter the workforce. I felt it was a great way to support a cause that is important to me (I’m a Recruiter for a living) and the cookies are absolutely delicious.  We did simple gray frosted and yellow frosted cookies.

I am through and through a California Girl. However, I chose a college in Texas and it was during grad school that I met my husband, a Texan. Our relationship developed in Texas, but I knew I wanted to have my wedding in California with all of the sunshine, the ocean air, and lifelong friends and family.

For colors I wanted everything to be black (what can I say, it’s the signature color of my wardrobe) but added white, because it is a wedding after all. It was suggested to me to have an accent color by my event planner. I love sunshine and thought yellow was a perfect California color. I insisted on the flowers girls wearing dresses that they could wear again and picked out beautiful black satin bubble-hemmed dresses that I felt were a sophisticated touch at the wedding.

Because of my family situation – my father passed away from lung cancer when I was in college, and my mother was not in a position to pay for a wedding – expenses for the wedding fell to my husband and myself. We worked really hard to find a unique and beautiful location that would not require a ton of decor to feel “finished” and thanks to my good friend and event planner, Kimberly Downey, we were able to do just that. Our friends own the barn we were married outside of and held the reception in.

So much of our wedding was a “family affair” but with my good friends that are like family. Everyone from the photographer, to the venue owners, florist, baker, and planner are close friends that happen to have skills suited for a wedding. My husband and I felt supremely blessed for such connections. One of our favorite personal touches was that instead of a groom’s cake, we had a friend make “oreo cake balls” to compliment the cake that were white and black and suited the look of our wedding as well as our taste buds. Additionally, I wore my sister’s Vera Wang wedding gown and couldn’t have been happier to be married in such a divine garment that was borrowed! I also had my jewelry custom made by my friend and jewelry designer Summer Ellis. My earrings were found vintage pieces that she made into earrings. I gave my bridesmaids each a pair of earrings that Summer and I designed together.

The day could not have been more perfect. The guys started the day with a straight razor shave at the Montecito Barber. We chose to see each other before hand so we could enjoy the entirety of our reception and honor all of our out of town guests by being as present as possible. I was escorted to the aisle by my two guy friends that were like brothers to me growing up. My mother then walked me down the aisle and I carried my father’s bible. It truly was as special as I had hoped. Dinner consisted of gourmet burgers made by “The Ranch” – a long time fav of mine. The bar outside the barn and tall tables for guests to enjoy cocktail hour drinks while the burgers were made to order got friends old and new to mingle and enjoy the evening.

At the end of the evening we exited to special sparklers obtained by Kimberly (her father works in special effects for films and knew some pyro technics guys) and at the end of the tunnel of guests I was overwhelmed to see my father’s VW Van waiting as our get-a-way car. One of my best friends had got the Van up and running again and others had washed, cleaned, and waxed the vehicle. The “Just Married” sign on the back brought everything together in such a special way.

From the Bride… Charlie and I met while at school in Boulder at University of Colorado. I was introduced to him briefly at a house party and just started wondering about him. He was different and I was smitten. I wanted to ask him out but I just didn’t see him around for the longest time. Eventually I found out that he spent that winter term skiing in Europe. When he got back, a mutual friend ended up connecting us again. We met up at an after party for a ski movie premier in 2001, I asked him out, and we have been together ever since. After university we moved to Lake Tahoe together to rock climb and ski. After living there on the north shore for 6 years together we finally decided to make it official. We got engaged on New Year’s Eve 2008.

Although Tahoe weddings are typically very lake focused, the woods and trails surrounding the lake were really where Charlie and I spent the most time together. This venue, the Tahoe City Nordic Center, was literally our back yard for the majority of the time we lived in Tahoe. Our house backed up to this clearing, which is the beginning of the trail systems for the Nordic Center, and we ran and biked amongst these trees countless times. The golden colors during the late summer and the tall grasses beneath the trees were perfect. September is my favorite time of year in Tahoe. Plus, I always had a fascination with the totem pole that was there! It is a very special place for us to this day.

I love looking through old photographs. I love colors that are sun bleached. And I love balloons. I am an architect and graphic designer, so the placement of the perfectly round, giant balloons within the natural setting was really important to me. Charlie and I placed the most importance on our venue and the people we wanted at our wedding and we wanted it to truly be fun. To have the flavor of a carnival without getting too kitschy. We didn’t want to make it over the top… since the setting was so amazing on its own. Friends, balloons, stripes, brass animals and a few pennant flags were all we needed. And there would have been no way I could have narrowed my colors down to just one or two. I had to have them all!

We are very much our own couple, so we wanted to make the day our own unique experience. We wrote our own vows and had our friend marry us. I did wear a pair of earrings that my mother, my grandmother, and my great grandmother had all worn for special occasions. Charlie and I compiled our favorite pictures from past family weddings and set them out. Instead of a cake, we had a beautiful assortment of individual pastries from the Tahoe House, a Swiss bakery in Tahoe City that is Charlie’s favorite place to get coffee and sweets. But maybe the best part of our day was the dance party. We had our first dance to The Shin’s New Slang and there was no cheesy wedding music played. Our friend and master DJ Eric Messier put together a playlist that literally no one could sit down to. The floor was packed all night until we had to turn off the lights. It was magical.

My most vivid memory is literally the light. The golden light of that day just signaled such wonderful things to come for us. The balloons dancing in the wind and the grasses swaying. And Charlie. He is so handsome and is truly my soul mate. I remember holding his hand and walking into the reception area and just feeling so much love surrounding us. Charlie and I both agree that it was the best day of our lives.

My husband and I met almost 3 years ago on an online dating service. I knew walking out of that first date at a coffee shop that I would be walking down the aisle toward that man one day. As sure as I was that this day would come, I never could have anticipated the priceless look on his face when I turned that corner. It was the highlight of the whole day and had the entire crowd in tears.

Our June Anthropologie-inspired wedding was brought to life through DIY projects and the floral genius of Cori Cook. For a fresh spring look we used grey, orchid green and robin’s egg blue focusing on a subtle bird theme while mixing the old and the new. While we wanted a fashionable wedding, it was also important to keep it genuine and approachable. The eclectic look of our aisle decor and centerpieces were done by combining various shapes, textures and colors. Colorful Anthropologie crackled pots filled with textured spring green florals played agains glass apothecary jars filled with moss and birds nests. Gorgeous bouquets were encircled by a willow boarder to add texture and tie in with the bird theme in a classy and unique way.

My husband and I created the escort card display using a 1930′s pantry door accented with colorful knobs and pulls. We also created the photo booth using a homemade fabric backdrop, antique frames, and fun props. The images were captured by a instant print camera and were used in a scrapbook to create both favors  and a unique guestbook. An eclectic collection of cake pedestals and platters created the dessert bar finished off with a homemade table runner and sign. A variety of cupcakes, french macaroons and cold milk kept every guest happy. Even the cake was made with love by a close family friend.

As much as I loved every detail we put into this wedding, the amazing love radiating from my groom, family and friends blew it all away.

Brian and I met in the summer of 2003 working at the Clarke Cooke House in Newport, Rhode Island. It was love and first sight when I saw the tan surfer in his tuxedo, and we knew instantly that there was a spark between us.  Our love of travel and complimenting personalities were unmistakably a perfect fit. After a multitude of trips to various countries, renovating a historic house in Newport, and building a life together, we knew it was time for the next step.

Brian proposed on our dog’s favorite beach in Martha’s Vineyard. Spending weekends at the family cottage on the island had become a special ritual since we first met. He insisted on taking a swim as soon as we disembarked the ferry before we got to the house. Luckily I agreed, and the next thing I knew he was kneeling in the sand asking for my hand. We rocked out to our favorite Vineyard band Johhny Hoy and the Bluefish that night and knew we had to convince them to play our big day.

We both knew exactly what we wanted; open air, hot July, summer fare, twinkly party lights, a rockin’ band, fireworks, and everything that epitomized our idea of summer with friends and family.

My groom waited patiently along with our dog Lenny, a Bouvier des Flanders, for his bride to finally arrive in the big red convertible. The rainclouds had delayed the wedding a tad (one hour). The fresh raindrops glistened in the tree under which we said our vows and created an ethereal sparkling veil.

The wedding itself was held at White Woods Farm in Stonington, Connecticut where I grew up. Inspired by our wedding, the owners have actually now made it available to others for such events. The white washed horse barn and rustic country home overlooking the expansive fields and pond provided a superb setting for our family and friends that allowed us to entertain with casual elegance while encouraging the guests to explore the property. Under the sail cloth tent, the tables were simple and understated. The green striped kitchen towels inspired by Pastis in New York City, accented the wide Tuscan tables which were scattered with antique jars abound with flowers carefully put together by my bridesmaid and her mother. Among everything there was a subtle constant spattering of red in the details. My red satin peep toe heels were the source of inspiration for the underlying color theme that reoccurred throughout.

Brian and I would both call ourselves gastronomic aficionados. The food had to be good and it had to be different. Smoke and Pickles of Westport, Massachusetts delivered all that and more. Appetizer stations boasted fresh scallop ceviche, large coils of homemade sausages and peppers over bruschetta, and a smoked chicken taco bar freshly pulled and topped to order. Dinner was served from great slabs of wood on grand white linen buffets with towering heaps of grilled veggies, whole wood roasted native striped bass, succulent spice rubbed pork loin, fire-roasted potatoes and a plethora of slaws and salsas making a colorful feast for the eyes.

After dinner, the band got everyone on the dance floor, barefoot or in a pair of flops from the basket. In no time everyone was drenched with perspiration but loving every minute. Cleverly, my mother had put cool wet washcloths in the coca-cola cooler for our guests to refresh. The band took a break and the fireworks began. Together, we stood back and watched our guests.

The day had finally come.  It all went by so fast and like a dream… the vows, the toasts, the speeches, the dining, the laughing, the dancing, the cake cutting, and rejoicing. If I had to decide on my favorite moment, I couldn’t. Our success would never have been possible without all the help of our family and friends. We have never felt more loved or special, and as everyone told us during the planning, it’s all worth it in the end.

Bridal gown from Hitched; bridesmaids dresses from AriaDress. So cute!

I grew up in the Northern Vignina area and absolutely love the beauty and history you can find all around. So naturally when it came time to pick a venue, it was easy. Murray Hill was in the area I wanted a place and it captured all of the things I loved so much about my home. It is an absolutely beautiful house overlooking the Potomac River with amazing grounds and scenery. Going along with NothernVirginia feel, we came up with a theme that we termed “country elegance.” Elegant but with a bit of a rustic flair.

I think one of my favorite style elements was the candy bar. We specifically wanted the table to be made with the wine barrels and I loved making the banner. Plus I love candy so what more could you ask for? Another favorite was the flat bed trailer that held the escort cards/boards made out of all different chalkboards and mirrors. Those were both a lot of fun.

On a more sentimental note, we had both of my grandfathers involved. My grandfather on my dads side officiated the ceremony which was very special for us and many of the centerpiece holders/boxes for the flowers were made by my moms dad. I loved being able to incorporate things like that among others to make it special.

Let’s get started, shall we? I think it’s pretty clear that I love details, shoes and puppies. In no particular order. So you know this detail-filled affair by Intertwined Events was an immediate favorite. It’s full of a few of my favorite things – pretty shoe wearing bridesmaids all lined up in a row? Check. Heart melting puppy? Check. Seriously sweet details? Check. From Intertwined Events…From the moment Saundra said yes to Ryan’s proposal of marriage she spent hours each day combing through the endless ideas, images and inspiration from designers, vendors and brides on Style Me Pretty.  Her wedding was infused with the bold and sophisticated palette of black and white stripes, bright citrus green and hot pink, accented with shiny metallic tones.  Without going over the top, Saundra wanted to incorporate a feminine palette that was soft, romantic and timeless and was able to customize each of the projects she loved from her favorite wedding blog to create her dream wedding!

From her DIY table numbers, favors inspired by the creations of Sweets Indeed and a photo booth with props that kept the guests entertained for hours on end, this wedding had it all. All of her styled elements were beautifully showcased against the beautiful hillside backdrop of the Aliso Viejo Country Club. Hanging lanterns, flowers and chandeliers adorned the cocktail reception and dance floor. Small votives numbered in the hundreds and were strategically places throughout the ballroom and tables so that everyone was cast in the flattering and romantic candlelight! What a vision!

While, never forgetting her Mexican roots, Saundra included a Mariachi Band, beer margaritas, and dessert table with homemade family favorites showing just how much she cherishes her heritage! The sweetest touch of the evening was that custom homemade dessert table entitled – Love is Sweet! Each of the amazingly delicious desserts were crafted by different family members from each of Ryan and Saundra’s families. It was a wonderful blend of families, cultures and tastes!  Not a single detail was overlooked and the hours of love poured into each project was seen and felt by everyone who was lucky enough to enjoy this joining of man and woman. What a sweet treat!
