My husband John and I found each other when we both moved to the Harrisburg area to pursue our careers. It started with a friendship between two adventure seeking teachers and blossomed into an unexpected romance. The journey of our wedding started 50 feet up in air, climbing on a ropes course element called The Catwalk, balancing on a telephone pole, when he got down on one knee and surprised me by asking me to marry him. The proposal was very much like the life we live, full of surprises and excitement.

I knew I wanted our wedding to represent us and be unique, fun, and entertaining for our guests. I wanted it to be an adventure like our relationship, our life, our engagement. We chose to have our wedding at the rolling acres and pristine views of Lauxmont Farm’s Japanese Gardens, because of my love for horses and our love for nature and the outdoors.

The day of our wedding the sun was shining with a slight breeze, complete with blue skies. It was a perfectly painted summer day. Our ceremony took place overlooking a field with horses running and in the distance the Susquehanna River. It truly was a stunning site. We tried to make our ceremony personal with our dear friend as our officiant and instead of a unity candle, since we both love wine, we did a wine ceremony to remember our relationship will only get better with time. Our ceremony was sincere, light hearted, and memorable, full of love and laughter. Cocktail hour was in the Japanese gardens where wine and cheese tasting took place. Here there were wooden fences from which photographs fluttered in the wind and guests mingled at tables adored with collections of vintage books, antique bottles, and delicate flowers. Signature drinks of lip smacking sangria and puckering pink lemonade were enjoyed along with the appetizers.

The reception tent was filled with personal touches. Through our wedding planning I was the designer with the inspirations and my husband was the builder and project manager. I’d venture to say it was all “do it yourself” because it was such a hands-on event, and I tried to put my heart into everything that was selected. We had a memory tent to celebrate our history together and our family’s history. We also had a kid’s tent, equipped with a lollipop centerpiece, homemade coloring books with our photographs, lots of toys, and things to do to keep our young guests entertained while enjoying themselves. John and I are very much kids at heart, so we knew the adults would enjoy this area too. The guests had a great time in our photo booth filled with silly and vintage props. Since I am from the Pittsburgh area, we had a large cookie table, a tradition in which many friends and family bake tons of delicious cookies for the wedding, and then they are displayed beautifully for everyone to enjoy. It was clear one of our guest’s favorite parts of the wedding was when the ice cream truck drove up to the reception tent to help everyone beat the July heat. Nothing brings out the child in someone like an ice cream truck.

Our wedding truly was a labor of love. My maid of honor designed our gorgeous invitations, our good friend officiated us, my husband’s sister painted signs, one of my bridesmaids, great friend, and an incredible stylist did my hair, and my friends and family helped me create numerous decorations, like hundreds of purple origami flowers that friends and family spent endless hours helping us make.. My husband and I had a blast rummaging through tons of antique stores finding the right pieces for our wedding, such as dishes, books, bird cages, bottles, you name it. Even though I was in the hospital for three days before our wedding, all of the little details fell into place perfectly. All our vendors were so wonderful and helpful with our wedding planning experience.

What I found most important about our big day was to step back, breathe, and take it all in. The kids playing with the toy horses, the laughter spilling out of the photo booth, my husband’s 91 year old grandfather in his dapper purple shirt overlooking the view, the ice cream filled smiles, the energy on the dance floor, the candle light glowing from the lanterns in trees. There were things that got broken, giggling when we forgot and stumbled over our vows’, I mean who needs to be taken as a lawfully wedded wife, when you could be a lover for life, as my husband mistakenly said. There was my torn bustle, and mother-son dance that almost didn’t happen, but thanks to all the love from my friends and family, and my wonderful husband, it was a day that in my eyes was perfect.

From the bride… Jake is from Cocoa Beach, Florida. He came out here with a friend for a 3 week vacation almost 4 years ago, got a job as a landscaper and never went back. I was born and raised here in Lahaina. I left for a bit for some school and some traveling, but came back in January 2010. When I got back, my little sister, Bridget, insisted that I meet one of her youth group/Young Life leaders, but I didn’t jump at the chance. I did finally meet him a couple of times in April at church events, and he got my phone number from Bridget. For 2.5 months, he called or texted me a couple times each week asking me out, but I never agreed. Finally, Bridget sort of embarrassingly forced a date upon us, and we’ve been together ever since. By September, after two requests and a camping trip with my family to Lanai, we were “official.” By Christmas, we were deeply in love and knee deep in planning a 4-day hike through the Haleakala Crater. By February everything was wonderful, and while I was getting excited for Valentines Day, Jake was busy. He met with my mom & stepfather to ask them permission to marry me. He got ahold of my father in Thailand, who I rarely speak with, to ask his permission and very secretly designed a ring with a tiny jeweler in Wailuku. Valentines Day came, and Jake came over to my apartment to make me breakfast before we went to work. When I got home, he had purchased 140 potted orchids (one of my favorite flowers) and decorated my 400-square-foot home! It was incredible. He pickled me up later & took me to Merrimans for dinner. Then he asked if I wanted to look at the stars, I of course agreed. We drove down to Slaughterhouse. When we got to the beach, there were tiki torches set up with a blanket, champagne, candles and rose petals. I thought someone had paid to have that set up and that we better move away quickly. Jake gave me a hug, said it was for me and got down on his knee. It was so amazing, romantic & more than anything I had ever dreamed of.    Our favors, the stemless wine glasses, had “Eat, Drink & be Married — Rachael & Jake — September 9th 2011″ printed on them in my own personal handwriting. My “old” was a bracelet and hair pin I got from my favorite vintage shop, Hula Gypsy; my “new” was my dress; “borrowed” was a beautiful necklace with a cross on it from my godmother; and my “blue” was my shoes! Our cake was made by a friend of our, Lindsay Hunt. She offered to help us with that, and it was wonderful! It was a Blue Velvet cake with buttercream icing and a great paisley design. We had jugs of margaritas & mojitos, which I made little medallions for. Along with that, the food and drink reflected our tastes: my favorite red wine, mini pizzas and spinach salad, along with Jake’s favorite beer and sliders. I love hydrangeas, so when I contacted Maui Floral to order flowers in bulk, they were great with helping me figure out an array of flowers to compliment them. (Lisianthus, Matsumoto Asters, Spray Roses, Dendrobium Orchids and Delphinum) Our style is very relaxed, so going with the usual structured, ornate, perfected florals wasn’t an option. We got quite a few quotes from florists on the island but in the end, what Jake and I had in mind was so simple and sleek we realized it made no sense to pay someone to do them. So a couple friends and I put them all together. Our ‘theme’ was sort of vintage chic, and I love the look of variation so I started collecting vases and jars from thrift stores in March. Everyone made fun of me for have dozens of them all over my house, but it worked out perfectly! Being from Australia, James from England, and living in New York, it was important to us to have our wedding at a place that was accessible for all of our friends and family. Our only requirement for our wedding was that we wanted to get married in a vineyard. With its proximity to the San Francisco International Airport, we went to Napa and Sonoma for a few days and fell in love with Sonoma. The vineyards are amazing but the whole atmosphere in the town square was just something that immediately felt right. We visited a number of vineyards and decided on one… which unfortunately fell through a month after we returned to New York. We then took a gamble on Gundlach Bundschu – site unseen – with encouragement from our amazing wedding planner, Stephanie Cole.

When we returned to Sonoma we couldn’t have dreamt of this place being any better. Walking through the wine cave to the vineyard overlook with the glorious sunshine was just magical. We had a cellist, Michael Fesckes, play for us before the ceremony and during our cocktail hour where our guests enjoyed local sparkling wine and a number of delicious passed appetizers prepared by Park Avenue Catering.

We then transported our guests to the timeless and rustic tasting room at Buena Vista Carneros, just a short bus ride away where we dined on cod and lamb and enjoyed the fabulous Buena Vista wines before dancing the night away.

There is not one thing I would change about our day. Looking at all the memorable photos wonderful Megan Reeves took for us and even writing about it now brings a huge smile to my face.

From Juli Vaughn of Juli Vaughn Designs… Let me start by telling you that the bride, Ashley, wanted to plan her wedding around her shoes. All of her best girls and one best boy traveled to NYC for a weekend with the specific purpose of locating “the shoes of glory,” as we called them. It was so fun! She tried on so many pairs, but when her toes slid in to these Kate Spades she just knew.

As her wedding planner and best friend, it was then my job to design the wedding around her style and the prized shoes. We knew the wedding would be in Italy, as her future in-laws had family connections with a charming and breathtaking hotel called King’s Residence in Palinuro, a little town on the Amalfi Coast. We decided to go with a “gilded” theme and also to embrace the warmth of Italian romance. I crafted all of the cork board frames which served as place cards and favors for the guests to put a little snapshot of their Italian trip in once they got home. (They were also light enough to not cause problems with packing.) I also arranged all of the flowers (as well as gathering quite a few native plants via a “nature walk” early on the wedding day) and created the menus. Ashley and Juan’s wedding was truly an international affair – Ashley grew up in California, but Juan is from Uruguay. They met in D.C. and their guest list included people from Sweden, Denmark, Spain, Argentina, Uruguay and the USA. Their ceremony was performed by their fathers, grandfathers and friends, all while overlooking the incredible views of the Amalfi Coast.

From the Bride… Our wedding day, July 16, 2011, was spent in the breathtaking little seaside village of Palinuro, in Italy, at the amazing King’s Residence resort — a place situated on the edge of a cliff overlooking the sea. This is the place you think of while you’re sitting in your office, wishing yourself away to a magical Italian paradise where gelato and capuccino are present at every meal and served by a dashing Italian waiter named Giovanni. This place was the stuff dreams are made of, perfectly fitting for a day in which I was to marry the man I had dreamed about all my life. Juan and I chose King’s Residence, having never been to Italy in our lives, based on a recommendation from Juan’s father. He was sure right about the place — it was absolutely perfect. Our day was shared with approximately 60 of our family and friends, who had come from all over the world to celebrate with us. As Juan and I walked to different tables during our reception, we found that almost every table was conversing in a different language! While some would consider our mini-United-Nations-of-a-wedding a little daunting, to us, it was incredibly special to have such an international flavor to our day. Our wedding ceremony was even conducted in both English and Spanish (saying my vows in Spanish was muy dificil!).

From LéLé of Lé Soirées Weddings & Events… This was my favorite wedding of 2011 because it features the beautiful natural elements of British Columbia, my home.  The bride, Lara, is a school teacher and the groom, Trevor, is a geologist. When they first started dating, Trevor was away for months at time doing field work. To keep in touch, he would write Lara a letter every day, then mail her the stack of love letters every week. When they told me this story, my heart melted, so we decided to incorporate this love letter theme into their wedding stationery design. I created a personalized “stamp” for the couple, and this went on everything from their invitations and programs to their wedding favors. Elements of nature were also important to Lara and Trevor, as they love to camp and hike together. To highlight these elements in their decor, we used a lot of birch wood, moss, and succulents in their florals. We also gave each guest their own little succulent to take home with a gift tag that read: “love grows.”

From the bride… Upon first meeting LéLé, my then-future husband and I described the vision we were seeking. We knew what we wanted, but we did not know how to bring it together ourselves. We thought at the time that
LéLé knew what we were describing, and on the wedding day she proved that not only she did understand exactly what we were looking for, but she could achieve more than either of us could have ever dreamed in making our wedding a reality. Our wedding was the wedding of a lifetime. It was everything we could have hoped for and more. The decor was stylish and modern with some vintage appeals, uniquely west coast in its overall scheme. Every last detail was precisely cared for. Our wedding day was the most fun either of us have ever had, and we are constantly wishing to re-live it!

LéLé and her team ensured that we were well cared for and spoiled on our wedding day with every little detail. LéLé made sure that the day ran smoothly, but was poised, professional, and friendly in all of her interactions. We have been at other weddings where the planner seems to take over and not really care for the couple’s or family’s desires. LéLé did not do this, and instead she made herself known personally to all of our most important guests and ensured that they too were enjoying the festivities. Overall, I cannot really thank LéLé enough for all she did in helping to make our wedding dreams a reality. People were quick to remark that our wedding was the “best they had ever been to,” and we are sure that we will be hearing such welcomed praise for many years to come.

From Elizabeth at Anticipation Events… Stephanie and Brian were married in August at Byron Colby Barn, which is just outside of Chicago but feels like a completely different world. They were such a fun couple to work with because their wedding was a reflection of their personalities and unique style. Stephanie rocked an amazing dress and some killer heels, and Brian’s personality shone though with his hat, bow tie and Chucks. They trooped through the fields surrounding the barn with Jeremy Lawson to have their first look and got some fantastic pictures. While they were out, they stumbled across this horse who agreed that Stephanie looked good enough to eat.  Luckily, Stephanie has quick reflexes.

Anticipation Events organized the bridal party, and Stephanie’s brother escorted the lovely bride down the aisle. Linda, a close family friend of Stephanie’s, presided over the ceremony, and when she pronounced them man and wife, all of the guests shook ribbon wands that Stephanie and her family made. Naturally, Brian could not resist a giant fist-pump at the end of the aisle.

Fabulous details from the party include the spectacular backdrop for the ceremony that Brian and Stephanie built, painted and assembled. Anticipation Events spent the day decorating the barn: hanging massive amounts of paper flowers, ribbons and café lights that we strung from the beams of the barn to encase the dance floor. Stephanie collected vintage doilies that we fashioned into table runners and blue mason jars that Nancy Rolison Designs filled with gorgeous wildflowers. Brian painted a tree stump that they used in place of a guest book and had all of the guests sign, and they incorporated pictures of them as kids as well as burlap banners to complete the wild, cozy feel of the barn.

From the bride… I was never the girl who dreamed about a big, fancy wedding. In fact, I never really thought about what my wedding would be like, until one day in July of 2010 the most wonderful boyfriend I’ve ever had became my fiancé. After he popped the question, I faced about a million more questions. Where did I want to have the wedding? What would my colors be? Who would be in my wedding party? Band or DJ? Cake or cupcakes? Or both? The list was never-ending and overwhelming. As a producer, I’m no stranger to making decisions and planning. I had a notebook filled with clippings from bridal magazines, dozens of computer bookmarks, and a ticket to a wedding expo. After pitching idea #146 to my fiancé, I knew I needed help honing in on my perfect day. This was my wedding, and I had no idea how to answer any of these questions. I wanted something that was perfectly us and totally unique, but beyond that I was lost.

With help from Amy Velasco, a friend and wedding planner, we decided we wanted our wedding to be “fun, whimsical and casual.” I used those three words as a guideline for answering any question. If the table setting wasn’t fun, whimsical, or casual, it wasn’t right. But when I saw the orange zig-zag pattern, I knew it was my perfect table runner. When my fiancé suggested that the groomsmen wear purple Chuck Taylors, he prefaced the idea with the word “casual.” Done. We incorporated kazoos into the ceremony because there’s nothing quite so whimsical as 140 friends and loved ones piping away on kazoos as you and your husband kiss for the first time. And that homemade photo booth my bridesmaids and I made was tons of fun! My bridesmaids also helped me turn vintage travel postcards into table names and escort cards during a marathon crafter-noon.

For flowers, I chose orange pincushion protea, purple kale, kangaroo paws, billy balls, mango calla lilies, green spider mums, coxcomb and hot pink freesia. Certainly not traditional wedding flowers, but colorful and whimsical. Amy’s genius advice even helped me pick the venue. Traditional venues were nice enough, but they weren’t us, and they certainly didn’t embody the three words I had chosen to guide me. Then I found The Ace Hotel when I was looking to take my fiancé away for a long weekend to celebrate his birthday. The Ace Hotel in Palm Springs as about as fun, whimsical, and casual as it gets. Stepping into the macramé decorated reception area, I knew this was the place. It was everything I wanted in a wedding venue! The Commune Area, with concrete floors and a vintage Airstream trailer, had just the vibe I was going for. We booked it that weekend and then returned home to send out save the dates—vintage travel postcards featuring a photo of The Ace Hotel. When the wedding day finally arrived, those three words helped bring the whole evening together. It was fun, whimsical, and casual, to be sure. But most of all, the wedding was totally us.

From the bride… It was difficult for some of our friends and family from across the country and around the world to understand why we — a couple who met in Southern California — decided to marry nine years later on a ranch in San Antonio, Texas. As we explained in our wedding programs, “In every chapter, Texas has held a special place in our hearts. It is where the bride has her roots and where the groom earned his wings.”

The ceremony and reception took place at the Don Strange Ranch, beginning in the rustic Kendall Creek barn past dirt roads, longhorns, and wooden signs with hearts and arrows leading the way. The contrast of delicate ivory rose petals lining cement floors, musicians playing string instruments from wooden folding chairs, and glass votive jars hanging from wooden rafters made for a magical setting. Standing before a wooden cross decorated with flowers and barn door panels with light casting shadows through the cracks, the bridesmaids wore flowing, wisteria-colored, floor-length dresses, and the groomsmen wore traditional tuxes and bow-ties. The candles by the altar were votives placed in an antique sugar mold my mom found at my grandparents’ house. After the ceremony, which had most of the bridesmaids drying their eyes with the handmade handkerchiefs they held behind their bouquets, guests made their way just down the road past the creek and the windmill to the open air pavilion where the reception was held.

With every detail, from the cowboy boots beneath my lace wedding dress to the candles, gold chargers, and mason jars with flowers on every table, to the waffle cones and Blue Bell ice cream enjoyed toward the end of the evening, the wedding was both rustic and elegant with a reception that was both formal and fun. Our cake knife was the same one my parents used when they were married 30+ years ago, at ages 20 and 21. It’s engraved with their names and wedding date on one side and our names and wedding date on the other. We are so grateful to, and would highly recommend, everyone who worked so hard on the event, from our wedding planner who made the vision a reality, to our band that had couples slow dancing beneath the twinkle lights and later got the whole group dancing to “Thriller” in front of the stage, to the photographers who captured every moment beautifully.
