From the bride… I wanted the wedding to have an intimate and natural feel with shabby chic elements. Having the wedding at my parents’ house was important to me as this is where Mark proposed. It is also the place where my older siblings were married. We picked out the dress together in San Francisco during our engagement. Then we went to vintage shops in Toronto to pick out some of the items. A friend did the all the tree art work for the tables. We incorporated Mark’s interests through a sailing drink, the “Dark and Stormy,” and the oyster bar.

From the Bride…May 5, 2007 was a chance meeting of two avid college football fans, in Auburn, Alabama. Gary and I were both visiting for the weekend. Starting with our love of college football, Gary and I talked for hours, finding many additional interests and experiences in common. Over the coming months, a geographical separation not withstanding, we grew closer, and a romance blossomed. We soon discovered our mutual love all things Southern, and most especially, Southern beaches. We had our first “official” date over Memorial weekend, and once we became engaged, knew that our wedding had to be that weekend. After seriously dating for a little over two and a half years, I was very ready to be engaged.  On December 17, 2009, Gary had taken me to dinner at one of my favorite restaurants, and we had planned to watch a Christmas movie back at my apartment after. Unknown to me, Gary had hidden the ring in the family room earlier in the day. When we arrived from dinner, he got down on one knee and pulled out the ring. I was so surprised, and very excited to finally say “yes”!

After visiting several potential wedding venues, I knew that Carillon Beach, Florida was “the place.” Gary and I love the Gulf Coast, and wanted a location where friends and family would be able to enjoy the beach. When I walked into the Meeting House, I became teary eyed and knew that we had found our perfect venue. Starting at age 13, I have been collecting wedding magazines. I have always admired the beautiful flowers, picturesque settings, and sweet romantic details. To put it lightly, I had a very specific vision in mind with pages of torn out magazines as the example. Victoria & Avis at Carillon Weddings were beyond helpful. The vendors executed my vision better that imagined (and everything was even more beautiful than the magazine pictures!) Vue Photography and Diva Productions captured our day perfectly.

The planning process was fun, and stress- free. I loved our traditional Anglican vows. Our officiant was the father of a long-time fellow dancer, so it was very special to have him marry us. The scripture passages were from Song of Solomon, and I Corinthians 13: 1-13. We both just loved what the passage said about love- how a mature love puts the other ahead of oneself and is patient and kind.  His reading of this passage said everything about the way we want our love to endure, and the way we want to act toward each other.  Our priest reminded us that we must care about others in our world as well. And saying The Lord’s Prayer was so special to me because I really contemplated each line, and realized the powerful words it contains. As we walked out of the chapel as Mr. and Mrs., the Battle Hymn of the Republic was played as a homage to our SEC schools- Auburn and Georgia.

Gary and I loved all the food at the reception, but the martini glasses of fizzled shrimp and grits were our favorite. Being a dancer and having many of my ballerina friends in attendance, we danced the night away. I loved all of the gorgeous flowers, and the spectacular wedding cake. My only disappointment of the night was having to cut apart such a magnificent creation! The evening was everything that we had hoped it would be, and more. As we were whisked away on a golf cart, we both said the night was the perfect way to begin happily ever after.

From the Bride… Dan wanted to do a destination wedding from the start so we looked at the Cape, Martha’s Vineyard, Newport RI, and Nantucket.  After the trip, Nantucket was it, hands down. We just loved the quaint old feel of the island.  During our trip we met with Nicole Wheldon of Unique Nantucket, who I could tell from the first meeting knew Nantucket inside and out and would make a great wedding planner, as she did.  She brought us to the Heidi Ho Cottage which we agreed would make a fabulous private wedding location.

After the location was chosen I started on my color palette.  I fell in love with the natural elements and colors of the island, so I decided to do a robin’s egg blue (hydrangeas of the island), sea green (the natural sea grass and brush all around the island), with hints of light pink (the rose covered cottages on ‘Sconset).  We even ended up choosing a color to represent the beach sand when my mother and I chose her Mother of The Bride dress.  I wanted all the flowers to represent the natural flora of the island so of course I chose hydrangeas, roses, stock, lady’s mantle, bells or Ireland, and other cottage garden flowers.  I even had little sea anemones wired into my bouquet.  To help me with ideas I actually used  Home and Garden Nantucket summer 2009.  I would carry it around with me and show it to all my vendors, dress stores etc so they could see the feel and colors was going for.  I just found the pictures to be so inspiring.

My background is horticulture so it was important to me to be married outside in the islands natural beauty. I think I succeeded and we even had some wonderful Nantucket fog during the ceremony. Although we wanted an elegant wedding we also wanted it to be relaxed and comfortable for the guests. We made our dress code resort casual and I made the wedding party’s dress a little more casual as well.  The maid of honor, JB’s, Flower girl, and MOB dresses were all from Alfred Angelo and I had them wear cute ballet flats from J Crew or flips flops.  The junior groomsmen and ring bearers wore little green gingham shirts, cargo shorts, boat shoes, and pink boutonnieres. And finally the little flower boy wore a pink polo. So sad he never made it down the aisle (he got sleepy!), he was so cute!

From the Bride… When we started planning, we agreed wholeheartedly on one thing: we wanted a party. We wanted great food and all of our friends, and we wanted to dance. At some point during all of it we would actually get married, but we wanted to CELEBRATE our love. Like throw your hands up in the air, get down with your bad self and celebrate, because we are in love.

We live in Houston but decided a wedding in Austin would be part destination, part totally affordable weekend getaway. We also thought, from a planning aspect, it would be a blast to make periodic trips westward together, sort of punctuation points in our 18-month engagement. Sometimes things don’t go according to plans, but in this case, we couldn’t have gotten off to a better start… Austin is where it’s at.

So much of the mood was determined when we chose our wedding venue. Green Pastures is beautiful and romantic and Victorian. It has vintage wallpaper and charm oozing around every corner, a teeny little bar tucked secretly under the eaves upstairs, wraparound porches with blue painted ceilings, resident albino peacocks that patrol the grounds and giant live oak trees wrapped in lights, which we were married under. As if it could be any more magical, GP happens to also have an incredible menu, talented chefs and wonderful staff, so that didn’t hurt either.

When not a starry-eyed bride, I am an interior designer and have access to millions of fabrics, which is where I started after we settled on Green Pastures. I wanted the style and colors of the wedding to match the style of the home, yet still be current and not look like a trip back in time. I settled on a palette of neutral tones, so we would compliment the atmosphere: ivory, pearl, gold, tea rose, brownish-grays, soft, muted pink undertones and black. I did some online research for garments but didn’t fall in love with anything. Also, it seems like things are out of whack these days with regard to price and quality, so it was easier for me to just have everything made custom to be exactly what I had in mind. I designed my gown first, made of a gorgeous off-white silk and tremendously comfortable (for all-intensive dancing purposes) before moving on to the other parts. For the maids, it had to be chevron stripes! Which don’t even exist, for the most part, but I found a beautiful gray/brown fabric with ivory stripes and my seamstress turned it into some of the most adorable and flattering dresses I’ve seen yet. I loved how all of the dresses were formal, yet sort of casual because of the fabrics.

I made the boutonnières for the men from vintage ribbon I bought at Liberty of London, and modeled the pieces after old medals and awards. In the centers, I added a compass button, as a memorial to my grandpa, who couldn’t be there. I’m from Kansas, and he always gave me compasses when I returned home, so I could always find my way. I made floral rosettes for the mothers, Brad’s nanna and the house party from leftover silk from my gown, so they would be able to keep them after the big day, sort of a part of me. I added vintage buttons from a collection I inherited from both of my late grandmothers. We all had a bit that was old that day!

Not long after deciding upon GP, I launched a massive eBay search for vintage birdcages. Brad liked to joke that birdcages were the perfect wedding metaphor, but I wanted a collection to use in our exterior decor. Petal Pushers, our florist, filled the birdcages with moss and flowers, and then hung them from the branches of the oaks under which we were married.

I also collected the vases for each table-assorted sizes in groupings of 5-7 containers per table. This wasn’t expensive, as vases ranged from 25¢ to $2, but I underestimated how long it would take to source, sort, and then spray paint all these containers. 5-7 containers per table x 45+ tables x spray painting = not my best idea. They ultimately looked lovely and exactly how I planned, but it was a labor of love to complete.

The day before the wedding, I had to run over to Michaels to pick up ribbon for our cakes. Do you know what else they sell at Michaels, especially the week before Halloween? GLOWSTICKS, that’s what. Part of me thought I was crazy, but part of me knew that glowsticks would be absolutely perfect for our dance party. They were 15 for a dollar (!!!!) so I limited myself and walked out of Michaels with $30 worth of awesome…. Or 450 glowsticks.

The reception was always designed with a dance party in mind. I had been hearing (via blogs, mind you) about a guy in Los Angeles called The Flashdance, aka Michael Antonia, who is part wedding DJ, part musical mash-up genius. DJ Mike had never been to Austin before but was game to travel, and our lives were changed forever. After the formality of first dances, somebody hit the lights and the dancing began in a frenzy. I’ve never seen so many adults dancing for such extended periods of time. Glowsticks were everywhere, on every guest, and I’ve never been so happy.

I’m writing this from our honeymoon, and our six month anniversary is tomorrow. We have been so thrilled to re-live these details, and will always feel like our wedding was the hands-down best time we have ever had! It was a wonderful time, including all the planning that went into the event, and I hope every bride has an experience as happy and exciting as mine!

By looking at the super sweet images by Ashley Davis Photography, you wouldn’t even know they completely lost power during their reception due to torrential rain! Phil and I met July 4th 2006 while camping with some of our mutual friends.  It was that night we shared our first kiss.  Then 2 years later Phil proposed on the 4th of July while camping in Estes Park while looking for a fly fishing spot.  It only seemed fitting for us to get married on July 4th 2009.  Since we got engaged in Estes Park, we decided to start our search of a venue there.  After long days on the internet and many frustrating conversations with venue managers, we decide to make things easy (or so we thought) and have it on my parents property in Franktown.  I had previously been a wedding planner and new the look and feel I wanted to capture (rustic, romantic, and fun).

The day of was not only a day I will never forget, but I am sure it will stay in the memory of our guests for a long time.  Everything was perfect.  I had spent the last year mastering my dream wedding to my dream man.  However, the one think you can’t pay for is to have perfect weather.  Our ceremony was outside under a huge pine tree.  As we were saying out vows, I could hear the pitter-patter of little rain drops but luckily we were able to get through the ceremony.  Our exit to get our pictures taken was on our Harley through our family and friends followed our wedding party in my dad’s 1956 Ford Galaxy.  We went off to get our pictures taken and the sky was the darkest I had ever seen it.  We knew we didn’t have much time.  We got some shots out in the field when Ashley was like “we should head back”  We had not even gotten in the garage and off the bike when we looked back at the torrential downpour that had unleashed. In Colorado, rainstorms might last an hour at the most, but on this 4th of July it wasn’t going anywhere.  In fact it rained 4 inches in 2 hours and even had some nice marble sized hail.  But this wasn’t going to stop us from having a great time.  We got all our guests from the barn to the tent using an assembly line of umbrellas and because of all the rain we now had a river going through the tent.  The ground was so wet that our guests chairs were sinking into the ground.  Then came time for the speeches, and just as we were getting started, the electricity went out.  I wish we could say that loosing the mic was our only problem but since my parents’ property is run on a septic tank, the toilets are controlled by electricity.  So all our guests….including myself in my wedding dress….. now had to find a tree.  We had a band, but because again we had no electricity, they couldn’t play.  So we had to improvise. Luckily my sisters boyfriend had his guitar.  Guest surrounded us with candles as we danced our first dance song to Wilson Philips “Hold On For One More Day”.  Not our first pick, but hey, we didn’t care.  Finally we got some generators and the band stared up and finished the night off with songs by Michel Jackson and Journey.  And even though the day didn’t go exactly as planned, I wouldn’t change a thing.  Because, anyone who says sunshine brings happiness, has never danced in the rain.

As far as details go finding the dress was the easiest feat.  I had found a picture on the Knot.com and only one bridal store in all of Colorado carried the dress. My thoughts were “What are the chances it going to look as beautiful on me as it did on the gorgeous girl in the photo?”  I went to Bea’s bridal and tried on the dress and fell in love.  It was perfect.  Just to be sure, I went to 3 other bridal store and nothing came close.   To add a fun flair to my elegant dress, I had avocado green shoes.  Since Phil is a huge Colts fan, I had my something blue be the Colts blue garter.  My something borrowed was a pin that was my grandma Jean’s which my mom lent me.

Since I had been in the wedding industry, I had my heart set on a specific photographer.  Since we had worked together in the past I was sure she was going to be able to cut me a small deal since we were on a fairly tight budget.  Unfortunately, that was not the case so I was at square one looking for a photographer.  While looking for venues in Estes Park, Ashley Davis’s name kept popping up.  I fell in love with the photos on her website decided to meet in Boulder for coffee.  Instantly there was a connection.  Ashley was relaxed fun and overall gave off a great vibe. Our DIY consisted of making the fans/programs for the guests.  Instead of using tongue compressors like I had seen before, my dad came up with the idea to use twigs from the property to add a rustic flair.  I also wanted to make name place cards using pinecones from their property.  My mom added a fun touch of chocolate brown flip flops by the door of the barn labels Dancing Shoes for guests to wear.  For months before the wedding, we collected mason jars from spaghetti to jam to chocolate fudge and for the wedding, we filled them half way with sand and used them as lanterns around the property.  Phil’s dad even made Sheppard’s hooks to make a path from the tent to the dancing barn.  My dad had taken old pieces of barn-wood to make signs directing guests to the ceremony to the reception and of course to the bar!  Instead of having guess sign a guest book, we had them sign a piece of wood which we then turned into the tabletop of our bar at home.  I was having a hard time deciding what kind of cake stand to use that would pull all of our elements together so my dad surprised me by making our 3-tiered cake stand out of logs and branches from the property.

My Godmother owns the Stationery Company in Cherry Creek, so I knew our invitations were going to be incredible.  We even had a graphic designer create an adorable map on how to get to my parent’s house. Our flowers were done by a family friend Sharon Sullivan who did an incredible job.  The center pieces and bouquets were the perfect combination of elegance and rusticness which also incorporated my colors of cream, brown and green.My expectations of the photos were pretty low because the weather was sooo nutty.  So when Ashley sent me my slideshow, I held my breath.  I immediately I started crying.  They were INCREDIBLE.  She had captured everything and more.  I seriously don’t think they could have been any better.

Because April brings unpredictable weather, cocktails were held in a clear tent on the grounds of the winery.  Guests were treated to a variety of specialty hors d’oeuvres such as lobster cones with caviar, chilled pea soup with crab stuffed green peas and cheve wine country wontons with apricot dipping sauce – they also indulged on cheese, antipasto and other delicacies on a station.  Escort cards were arranged on custom made picks gleaming with crystals and set in moss.

The dinner tent popped with color – shades of blue and green accented with white flowers.  The carpet in the tent was custom dyed to match the invitation envelopes – just a little detail.  Each of the guests’ place settings featured a crystal bead wire chargers and menus with the pattern of Brooke’s dress & the couple’s new monogram.  We decided to use a pole tent so we could forgo a liner and instead project amazing pattern on the ceiling.  Crystal beaded chandeliers, moss poles with ribbons of roses in tones of white and green and handcrafted garland were used to create the finishing details in the tent.  We also used several tones of linen ranging from a light pear green to a deep ocean blue to create excitement among the 20+ tables!  Dark chiavari chairs were sweetly tied with aqua toned ribbons.

A few years ago, we found a gate in an abandoned lot – it’s been painted about 20 different colors and is featured in quite a few of our weddings …it was  one of the bride’s favorite décor details we do, so it was incorporated into the cocktail tent to lead guests into the dinner.  It’s true that no wine country wedding would be complete without photos of the couple in the vineyard – even in April, the buds were breaking.  The couple also chose a magnum wine bottle for their guest book instead of the traditional paper book (what’s better than great wine you can drink later?)

The same pattern on the invitations is projected on the ceiling using color changing LED lighting – over the course of dancing, the tones changed from deep blue to teal and back again.  The four tier cake made of fondant and handmade flowers featured crystal accents and also had a pattern reminiscent of the bride’s gown.  Being from the south, a groom’s cake was inevitable.  Mark was an avid fly fisherman, so brook surprised him with a tackle box and pole and fish for his cake – even the fly’s on the board were made from edible modeling chocolate.  To end the evening, guests were treated to a port and chocolate table where they cut their own chocolate from large slabs and enjoyed a variety of port.  (note…I’ve never in my life seen 200 people drink 12 bottles of port – they devoured it!)

It’s always an honor to be introduced into our couples lives by creating one of the most important days of their lives.  (note I said…one of the most important).  While each event we plan provides unique challenges, we never miss the fact that brides and grooms have a lot of options now when planning their parties and it’s a great feeling to think that they trust us with the monumental task.  I make it a point to thank my couples and the mothers/fathers after the wedding is over – because I am thankful that they entrusted us…so, thank you, again…Brooke & Mark.
