From the Bride… Christian and I had been together for 3.5 years when he proposed to me in Venice last June. We both knew that we wanted our wedding to be inspired by Italy, and Venice in particular — the food, the wine, the atmosphere. The first major decision we made was the photography. I had seen Corbin’s work on several blogs before and I knew I wanted her to photograph our wedding no matter what — we felt a strong connection with her work. Finding the right stationery designer was a bit more difficult, I wanted it to be both sophisticated and whimsical, yet not childish. Not an easy task!  Finally I discovered Holly Hatam of Teardrop Weddings and she designed an invitation suite based on our Venetian engagement. The dress was easy — I saw the Lela Rose dress, and it fit perfectly to the theme with its quirky floral embroidery.

I gave our florist a moodboard and a rather loose description. I wanted the flower arrangements to look like an upscale version of having been to the Rialto Market in Venice and picked up some seasonal fruit, veggies and flowers and just placed it all beautifully on a stand. I made little jam favors as escort cards and had custom made hard candies as well for favors. I used Etsy a great deal to find little things that would help make the day complete, like the custom cookies and the cake stand.

From Corbin Gurkin…I was absolutely delighted to get Marie’s inquiry for her wedding in Copenhagen – she never would have guessed this when stumbling upon my website, but I already had a lifelong connection with Denmark having grown up with a Danish au-pair. I have always been completely enamored with the culture there. I had been to visit Copenhagen, but never for a wedding, and was absolutely thrilled when Marie and Christian brought me over for their fall nuptials. What I found to be so wonderful was that Marie and Christian had spent a lot of time looking at wedding blogs for inspiration and I just loved how they incorporated Italy (where they were engaged) into the decor in a subtle way – wine tones, fruitful arrangements… Marie and Christian were married in the Citadel church – a fantastic area of Copenhagen not far from the famed Little Mermaid statue, and with its windmill and vibrant red palette, this location was a photographers dream! The reception followed at a nearby restaurant that faced the water and the evening was full of the most sincere toasts (lots of them as is the Danish custom!). Their puppy Mimi also made an appearance! The love that day was just so palpable!

From the Bride…Austin and I met thirteen years ago — when he mistook me for someone else and kissed me!  I was sitting at our college hangout, when he came up from behind, planted his greeting on my cheek, and then realized that I wasn’t who he thought I was.  From that day forward, each time he saw me on campus, he came over to apologize for the confusion.  Eventually, one of those apologies became an invitation to dinner, and the rest is history. We attended Rollins College in Florida, but we’re both native New Yorkers and returned to Greenwich Village together after graduation. Several years ago, we moved west to California, where Austin proposed during one of our daily sunset walks on the beach of Santa Monica.  We later decided to make a big leap to San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua.  In the U.S., I worked as freelancer producer for magazines, music videos and commercials, and Austin was an actor, but when we moved to Nicaragua, we turned our focus to sustainable development, and are building environmentally conscious homes and schools.

When it came time to decide where to wed, we considered both California and Nicaragua, but because we live so far away, returning home to New York seemed like the natural choice. We retreat to the Hamptons each summer for vacation, and it holds so many happy memories, so we decided to marry in East Hampton. It was important to us to have the ceremony and reception outdoors, and fortunately we stumbled upon The LongHouse Reserve.  The moment we walked upon the Reserve’s grounds, we were moved by its extraordinary beauty.  The circular amphitheater seemed a sacred place for a ceremony, and we knew that the art sculptures, the lawns, the pond and its lily pads would be an enchanting backdrop for a celebration.

Our most profound moment came during the ceremony, when we were standing beside each other exchanging vows in the center of the amphitheater, standing on rose petals and air, encircled by the love of our family and friends.  We felt blessed in that sacred moment. Of course (of course!), walking down the aisle towards Austin felt fantastical, and he says that seeing me walk towards him was incredible.  Another delightful moment came minutes before the ceremony began, as I walked through the set-up for the cocktail hour and reception, and saw the marquee tent with its lovely chandeliers, the tables with their romantic settings, and the long bar waiting for its guests, and I knew that this completely magnificent setting was for our wedding!  Every detail we had desired (and had spent months thinking about!) came together on this one gorgeous day.  I was breathless, and so grateful to Beth Helmstetter, our wedding planner, for capturing every idea we had and realizing it.  Though some couples are anxious to greet their guests immediately after the ceremony, Austin and I really enjoyed setting off with our photographer, Corbin Gurkin, for our bride & groom shots. We got to relive the ceremony and revel in the knowledge that we had just tied the knot.  It provided us with a moment of peace in that big, beautiful, busy day.

An indelible moment was when we walked towards our reception tent as the band began to play a Jack Johnson song, and we took to the dance floor for the first time as husband and wife.  We were euphoric to begin the celebration and our lives together in such a happy way.  The cake cutter and server that we used to slice our delectable cake had been given to me as a shower gift, and my sister had them engraved with our new monogram and wedding date.  Each and every time we use that pretty silverware, we will be reminded of our wedding day  Because we are now living in Nicaragua, we wanted to infuse a bit of Latin culture into our wedding, and decided upon the band Jose Conde Y Ola Fresca, who were simply amazing.  Our family and friends spent the entire evening on the dance floor!  We both wanted to keep our wedding as green as possible, so employed local vendors who utilized regional, in-season goods.  Our caterer, Brent Newsom, served local sea bass along with the Hamptons’ famous sweet summer corn and tomatoes.  Our florist, Claire Bean, arranged seasonal flowers into our sumptuous centerpieces and bouquets.

From Corbin Gurkin Photography…Ross and Amanda met nearly 10 years ago at Elon College, and their friends knew, it was a match made in heaven from the start.  They chose Charleston for the celebration of their nuptials as many couples do for its beauty, romantic and historical feel, great food, and a weekend of entertainment for their guests.  This wedding turned out just as Amanda and her family dreamed.  In a wedding venue, they wanted an intimate and casual feel that was an extension of the property itself.  The private, southern, estate feel of the Governor Thomas Bennett House was exactly what they had in mind for the modernized, Victorian style reception, and the garden setting made for an incredible backdrop for the ceremony under an oak tree strung with white wash, French chandeliers.

Following the ceremony, the guests were led into the house for a champagne toast from the bride and groom on the gorgeous spiral staircase.  They were then left to enjoy the house along with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while the bridal party returned to the garden for photos.  The tent on the carriage house lawn awaited the group following cocktail hour and as guests were led there, they strolled under trees of votives in clear glass to create a dreamy effect of twinkling light that increased as the night progressed.  The elements of detail in the tent focused on various lighting fixtures, an antique style mirrored bar and back bar shelf lined with an eclectic assortment of votives.  The lounge accented with pale blue and cream toss pillows embraced a glass cube coffee table filled with the bride’s signature blue hydrangea glowing with soft light.  To top it all off, the addition of perfect fall weather was the best gift the bride was given all day.

From the Bride…Andy and I are photographers based out of Jacksonville, Florida, so when we started planning our vow renewal for our five year anniversary, photography was naturally the most important thing to us. We love vintage and fine art photography so we knew we wanted a photographer who fit that style of photography and understood our vision. When I spoke with Corbin on the phone, she really seemed to get what our vow renewal was all about and was excited about our concept. She was wonderful to work with and did an amazing job! Our goal for the renewal was two-fold. We wanted to renew our vows with our own words spoken just for each other. Our renewal was really just for us and was about pulling off the look we wanted in an amazing location with great vendors, so we opted for a “Vow Renewal for Two”. In other words, sans guests. Secondly, we plan to add full styling services to our photography packages and possibly a vintage rental inventory down the road so we wanted to showcase my styling skills as another aspect to the renewal.

Our theme was french country/shabby chic and Saddlerock Ranch with it’s rustic buildings, vineyard covered hills, and sprawling horse ranch fit the bill perfectly for our venue. Our color palate consisted of peach and mint green with accents of gray and silver. I love sweets so in lieu of a traditional dinner we just had a dessert table for two filled with a vanilla bean cake, chocolate cake pops, and french macaroons a la a French Patisserie.  I added a milk glass framed chalk board to the table set up which read “Patisseries Fraiches” (or “fresh pastries”.) Found Vintage Rentals provided a vintage table and to-die-for gray french country chairs which served as the base to our table set up. For the table top I wanted to mix French sophistication with shabby chic charm so I used a mixture of miss-matched vintage silverware, silver chargers, jadeite plates and cake stands, pink depression glass plates and champagne flutes, milk glass compotes, and a set of runners I made myself. The bottom runner was a silver silk shantung and the top runner was made out of peach organza with vintage lace trim. Kate and Megan of Flowerwild created beautiful centerpieces of white peonies, peach Juliet garden roses, sweet pea, queen anne’s lace and more soft blooms in Harney and Sons tea tins. To complete the table and reflect my love of fashion and vintage sewing items, I used clusters of vintage thread spools bearing thread in our colors as bud vases holding poppies. I also found a vintage milk glass chandelier online and repainted it silver to hang from the pretty tree at Saddlerock.

I love doors, especially red doors on southern houses and old beat up ones with cool locks. Therefore I was thrilled when I discovered a vintage double door at Found Vintage Rentals that I used as the “gateway” to our little table set up. Flowerwild made up a garland of greenery and peach garden roses to drape over the door. We also used the garland to drape around a horse’s neck (supposedly the same horse from the movie True Grit!) I had a couple horses growing up and my Brother now trains them so it was fun to interact with the horses for some photos. To add some humor,  I printed chair signs on watercolor paper that read “Hers” and “His . . . still hers”. We pinned them to the backs of the chairs with a single poppy bloom. We also printed a sign that read “Renewed” instead of “Just Married” on watercolor paper. Saddlerock has so many fun props around the property. The vintage Rolls Royce Woody made the perfect backdrop for our “getaway” photo.

Our renewal was so much fun and a great way for us to both remind each other of our love and spend some quality time together. I can’t wait for our 10 year!

Peter and Jessica met nine years ago at Brown University.  They now live together in Brooklyn, NY. They chose Santa Barbara as their wedding location because Jessica is from Los Angeles and grew up going to Santa Barbara, because her parents had a place there.

El Mirador is an absolutely magical overgrown estate in the Santa Barbara area.  They wanted the guests to get to experience all the amazing areas of this “secret garden” so they had the guests enter at the top of the property and exit at the bottom, having wandered and experienced the many incredible areas.  Guests drove up a dramatic palm-lined driveway where they were greeted by the valet. They then entered the old foundation of the original house, with a koi pond in the center, built in the 1920′s, that has since been torn down and never rebuilt.  Guitar music greeted them as well as fresh lemonade with a spiked option.  The guests could then wander under the foundation to the Grotto that was used during Prohibition.  With wooden arrows leading the way, guests found their way through old stone paths to the pond with a Japanese garden.  At the pond were the bass and violin players playing Django Reinhardt music.  There was another beverage option of cucumber water.  After the guests explored this amazing backdrop they were queued by a gong to head towards the ceremony lawn, a beautiful grassy area surrounded by huge trees.  The chuppah for the ceremony matched the wild beauty of the location.

After the ceremony, guests were led to another lawn near the reception area where the cocktail hour was held.  While guests enjoyed cocktail they also participated in a Polaroid sign in book that Jessica’s photography friends helped run.  Joaquin Trujillo shot Polaroids of the guests for the sign-in.  Guests strolled over to the old carriage house and courtyard for the reception with strung lights hanging across the structure.  The flowers were a brilliant array of jewel-toned purples, oranges and greens arranged in vintage tins and vases provided by Jessica, Rebecca Stone and Camille (florist).  All the guests had silkscreen printed mini sacks of wildflower seeds on their plates as a party favor listing that a donation to the Natural Resources Defense Council had been made in their honor.  The food from Seasons Catering was displayed as a family style buffet featuring homemade mushroom ravioli as well as local vegetables from Ojai.  The cake mirrored the rustic design of the event with a “Betty Crocker” style of butter cream frosting with organically placed fresh figs, berries, champagne grapes, and flowers.  The wedding was an intimate affair in a naturally beautiful, organic, and warm setting on a perfect late summer day.

James and I love to travel. He proposed to me in Eze, a little medieval village on the French Rivera. So we knew we wanted a destination wedding. We were also working with a limited budget and although we wanted a small intimate group, we still wanted the location to be close enough that flight times or costs would not inhibit our guests. We also wanted it to be a place that would be a real change, an adventure to a place our friends and family might not otherwise venture. Our search first began with Mexico but the places were either too expensive or americanized. Then it was Nicaragua. However, the logistics proved a little too daunting and the options were very limited. Finally, while randomly surfing the Internet I stumbled upon the UNSECO World Heritage Site of Antigua Guatemala. The exquisite Spanish colonial architecture of this little town nestled in a beautiful valley beneath three volcanoes took my breath away. The next thing you know we had booked our trip for, of all times, Semana Santa (Easter/holy week).

James and I spent the week enjoying the festival and the city. The colorful alfombras that each house lovingly creates for the procession are something to be seen at least once in your life (we had one created at the entrance of our reception). In a few short days we met many friends who have been close to us ever since. One very special friend, Anne Thornton, threw our rehearsal dinner for us at her wonderful home in Antigua. We spent the summer before our wedding there planning, studying Spanish, and making even more friends. It has become our second home. We can not wait to go back for our first anniversary.

From Corbin Gurkin, photographer: Drawing inspiration from Ceci’s invitation suite, Meagan Gilpatrick of Maine Seasons Events and Corbin Gurkin of Corbin Gurkin Photography designed a winter table setting at Foxhill in Camden, Maine.  The design included birch, snow, and other winter themed elements.  We wanted a dreamy, ethereal look that would highlight Camden, Maine as a gorgeous wedding backdrop….snowy vistas overlooking the chilly Atlantic.  We kept the design classic using mercury glass accents and found objects to contain the jewel toned palette. The cake was designed by Gayle Forte/Let Them Eat Cake with a topper from Lauren Christensen of “Lo Boheme”.  Additional desserts were made by Anastasia Glassman of Swan’s Way.

From Emily Carter, floral designer: Our inspiration board combined a lush, simplistic vintage elegance with subtle touches of explicit detail.  I used this to direct my overall look and feel for the floral elements.  The beauty of full blooms of New Zealand peonies and the intricate detail of lady slipper orchids as well as the organic textural elements of various berzillia baubles and brunia berries brought forth a wonderful combination of a vintage style elegance with a touch of organic texture.  French and double tulips were icing on the cake with the combination as their natural tendency to flow and have such a beautiful curve and shape is one that I will always adore.  Silver dusty miller was a beautiful complement to all of these above flowers as its texture speaks for itself, but it also conveniently mimicked the silver mercury glass bowl that we used for the container in the shoot.  Finally, it is a shame that images can not be scratch and sniff, as the aroma of the peonies and the tuberrose was a nice breath of Spring in the midst of a frigid winter day.  For the bouquets, it was impossible to simply create one as I wanted to do a bouquet that would nicely complement the centerpiece elements; however once I found impeccable anemones with black centers, I was compelled to create yet another.  These flowers have the most amazing contrast of not only color, but also the dainty delicate petals contrasted with the heaviness of the dark center is so very inviting.  I will always love these flowers and that is the reasoning behind the second bouquet, as I simply could not go without showcasing their stellar and distinctive beauty.

I photograph weddings in France fairly often, but usually I only have a short time there before I’m off to my next event, so when I had the opportunity to spend a few extra days this July in one of my all time favorite areas – Montmartre – I couldn’t have been more thrilled. I jumped at the opportunity to put together a style shoot with some wonderful vendors – both American and French. I was inspired by the romantic style of Delphine Manivet’s designs, her stunning lace detailing and overall antique sensibility. I worked with these lovely vendors to put together a style shoot that would invoke the look of a royal wedding in Paris, incorporating Delphine’s gowns into the shoot. Ceci’s invitation suite kept this idea of a palace wedding in mind and played off the idea of love letters from a queen to her king. The invitation is finished with a royal wax seal and gold cord.

The delightful and wonderfully talented ladies over at Sugarplum Cake Shop created a cake that incorporated ribbon elements, also complimenting Delphine’s designs. We worked in a pale blue palette, consistent with the shades of Louis XVI era materials. Seriously, even if you’re just in Paris on holiday, you really must stop in to this shop – the sweets are oh so yummy! I kept the table design quite understated, using picked flowers and peonies with berry accents. The table was set with French toile fabric and a royal blue runner that I found in Montmartre. Our darling model, Charlotte was photographed in Delphine’s stunning gowns in the rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Clos de Lias designed the blue floral bouquet which I wrapped in vintage French ribbon.
