After eleven months of bliss Marc and I decided to go on vacation to my favorite vacation spot growing up – Hawaii. On the second day of our trip Marc told me he had booked a photographer to take professional photos to satisfy my mom who was always complaining that she didn’t have any (I hate taking pictures!). We went down to the beach to meet with the photographer and had a blast being silly and posing for forty five minutes. When we were done the photographer said goodbye and Marc escorted me to a private hut on the beach. There were yellow rose petals on the sand leading to the dinner table set for two. There were menus with our names on them with all of my favorite foods listed. As soon as we were fully in the hut Marc got down on one knee and tried to recite something he had written earlier but ended up getting out the words “will you marry me.” We both were crying with joy and embraced for what felt like a few hours but in reality was only a few minutes. The photographer returned to our watery faces for some shots after the monumental moment. We then enjoyed a delicious private feast on the beach in Kauai! At the end of the evening we returned to our hotel room covered in roses and on the bed roses in the shape of a huge heart.

Marc and I immediately bonded over our love of food. Marc graduated from the Culinary Institute of America and owns and runs his own catering company. Marc spends his time planning and executing other people’s parties. He was so excited to finally be able to plan his own!

We had a vision of getting married by the water – we find the water to have a very calming and romantic presence. I have lived on the upper west side of Manhattan for the last five years and loved sunny days eating and drinking at the boat basin on 79th Street. After ruling out a few places due to number constraints and overall feel I walked Marc over to the Boat Basin thinking it could be a great venue for us if his company would be allowed to cater there. As luck would have it they allowed him to cater and the date they had available was perfect for us!

In five months we were able to put it all together and our reality wedding was better than all of my dreams. It was an amazingly sunny, 62 degree day in the midst of fall in NYC. Marc and I didn’t do the big wedding party – as it was too much of a hassle and we didn’t want to tell our most loved ones what they could and couldn’t wear. His brother was his best man and my best friend was by my side all day and night. Our attire on the invitations read “Cocktail wear with a nautical flare” Our vision was since this was a boat basin it should have a nautical feel. My maid of honor wore red, while my mother wore navy. We had a life ring made with our names and the date for people to pose with as they entered the ceremony to give it a feel of a forced cruise entrance photo.

The food was really at the heart of the party. We were very focused on having fun delicious food that everyone could enjoy. Our cocktail hour included a raw bar as well as passed micro lobster rolls, kobe beef sliders, mini fish tacos, tuna ceviche, pecking duck crepes, Panko chicken frites, and Vietnamese summer rolls. We had two signature drinks passed which were the drinks we enjoyed on our first date – dark and stormy and mojitos. Our meal at dinner was served family style since we really wanted everyone to be able to try everything and experience an interactive dining experience. Each table was served two different salads as an appetizer. For the main course we chose braised beef short ribs with macaroni and cheese and glazed heirloom carrots as well as seared ahi tuna with Himalayan red rice over a roasted wild mushrooms and endamame.

Dessert was very important to me – as my sweet tooth is very well known by everyone who has ever met me! My favorite cookies were layered rainbow cookies. I asked Marc if we could make a cake out of these cookies and before I knew it we had ordered two sheet trays of the cake, then cut them into cookie bites, layered them to resemble a cake and vwhala! Our cake cutting was so fun! Marc took a cookie off the pile and we shared our first one. Immediately following was a free for all of everyone just taking a cookie off the pile that resembled a cake. They were so moist and delicious – the best rainbow cookies I have ever tasted! We had a dessert table filled with all of my other favorites: micro ice cream sandwiches, banana pudding, lemon glazed cake doughnuts, peanut butter mouse pretzel cups, pistachio, chocolate orange, and almond biscotti’s, and assorted fruit.

The ceremony took place under a Chuppah that has been in Marc’s family for over 100 years. It was from Marc’s Great, Great Grandmother who started her own temple in Montreal. Music was very important to us as well. The song we exited the ceremony to was hakuna matata from the lion king. Our first dance was to our favorite song “give into me” sung as a duet.

The wedding day as a whole was point blank the best day of our lives. A very vivid memory is Marc and I getting ready. We both got ready in our apartment with Dori, the maid of honor. Dori had the job of keeping us separated so that we would not see each other before the grand reveal for the cameras. While Dori was helping Marc with his bowtie in the other room I was standing nervously alone in the dining room. All of a sudden Marc screamed “Erica” to which I replied “Yes?” – then he said “I love you.” In that moment my anxiety and fear disappeared and I became overwhelmed with joy with the reminder of what this day was about; committing to spend the rest of our lives as best friends together forever.

As we approached our last year in medical school and began to apply for residency we were forced to think very seriously about our commitment to each other. We needed to decide whether it was worth it to apply for residency as a couple or risk not being in the same city.

In the midst of an incredibly hectic interview season, Jono suggested we get away for a weekend in Vermont. We drove up to his ski house near Mount Snow and he had arranged for dinner at a new restaurant. I suspected he was up to something, and asked if I should wear a dress – no ring…

The next morning he surprised me with skins that we could attach to our skis so that we could hike up the mountain. It was a beautiful morning and we set off up the Cascade Trail. Skiers in the lifts above shouted, ”You’re going the wrong way” but we loved the challenge. Just near the top, Jono had pulled ahead and was fixing his boot by the time I caught up. While down on one knee, he said the most beautiful words about our relationship and our future and pulled out a gorgeous ring from his ski jacket. I was jumping up and down, and of course, said yes. A ski patrol officer noticed the commotion and came over to ask if we were ok. I showed her the ring and we got our first congrats!

We drove back to NYC that evening and Jono suggested dinner at our favorite restaurant on the upper east side called Sfoglia. There, we were escorted to a hidden back door, up a flight of stairs, and into a private dining room filled with both of our families. Jono has pre-selected for all of our favorite dishes to be served family-style and as usual dinner was amazing. It was the perfect proposal from start to finish!

I remember when we were getting ready, the site coordinator came over to explain that it was raining and the lake was flooding the dock (the site for the cocktail hour). She explained that we could move the ceremony inside at the last minute, but the cocktail hour needed to be decided on earlier on. The room was quiet, as my parents, each of my 9 bridesmaids, and even the hair and make-up stylists stared at me, waiting for a decision. I remember feeling surprisingly calm, looking out over the lake, through the rain, and seeing a patch of clear skies heading in our direction. I knew exactly what Jono would want us to do… I decided to go ahead with everything outside as planned. Sure, I walked out in the rain, but we got the rainbow and the cocktail hour was beautiful. The rain started up again once we were in the tent and didn’t even affect the fireworks!

The ceremony was my favorite part of the day, I feel like I remember every second of it. I wasn’t sure how our interfaith ceremony would turn out (he is Jewish and I am Catholic), but our officiant did an amazing job of balancing our traditions and focusing on our love for one another and our families. She also met with us each individually beforehand to remind us to be present, and it really helped. A friend sung “Feels like home” during the ceremony, while the wedding party and our immediate family members passed around and each blessed our wedding rings. We stood holding each other, looking out over our guests and the beautiful surroundings and listening to our friend’s beautiful voice and the sweet lyrics; we really soaked in the moment and I will never forget feeling so happy and fortunate. It was incredibly special.

Another memorable part of the ceremony was the weather. It was crazy for those 40 minutes, we had rain, sun, wind… and best of all a double rainbow, just as the officiant had finished saying something about how couples who get married in bad weather can weather any storm! We felt so blessed that weekend, but the rainbow was like a sign from nature affirming our commitment.

From Geranium Lake Flowers … Love, love, love this wedding palette of kumquat and steel for this destination wedding.  Claire and her handsome groom Jeff are from Seattle and chose the gorgeous Garden Vineyards estate for their summer nuptials.  One of the fun things about working on this wedding was that it was primarily planned by Claire’s mom!  She traveled back and forth from Seattle to Portland to conceptualize everything from  her bouquet to the well wishes chuppah.  Darling!

Are you ready for the most amazing wedding story we’ve seen in a long time?

My wedding day is every bride’s worst nightmare. What transpired on that picture perfect Friday afternoon was nothing short of a miracle. The beautiful pictures you see depict not what I imagined it would be, but what I wouldn’t trade for the world. After all, behind all the glitz and glamour of a modern day wedding, is it not really just about two people vowing to love, cherish and honor each other for the rest of their lives? Well that’s the lesson, unfortunately, I learned the hard way.

The dreaded call came in around 1:00PM on Friday, August 26th, the day before Hurricane Irene was predicated to hit the coastal towns of New Jersey, and just FOUR hours before my wedding ceremony was scheduled to begin. Due to the “red alert” and evacuation orders issued for Atlantic City, our five-star venue was forced to cancel our wedding ceremony and reception… I can still hear the words “Your event has been cancelled” ringing in my diamond-clad ear. For as most brides know, four hours before your ceremony begins, your hair has been coiffed, your makeup has been perfected and you are trying to relax while sipping on your mimosa.

So what do you do when your dream has been crushed? Well, most families may regretfully inform the guests of the unfortunate news. However, as you can see by the pictures, we’re not like most families. I remember the moment so vividly. My sister, and maid of honor, looked at me frankly and said, “What do you want to do? You know, we’ve always said someone should get married at Lynette’s house.” (Lynette is a close family friend with an AMAZING outdoor landscape.) And that was all took…

The ball was rolling. Our families frantically took to the phones, rerouting the minister, ordering chairs, trying to piece together some semblance of a ceremony. The most amazing moment was when we pulled up to the house, having no idea what our wedding would look like, and seeing the beautiful ceremony space arranged on the lawn and the smiles of our friends and family. You can see by the pictures, they did an amazing job!

When you’re in the throes of planning the big, glamorous wedding affair that you dreamt of, it is so easy to forget the real meaning and purpose behind the day. We were blessed with the wonderful reminder that it is not really about the venue, or the 5 course meal, but rather being surrounded and supported by the people that care for you as you embark on this journey called marriage with the one you love the most!

We met at temple.  Nace was close with the Rabbi and Rachel was working at the temple, training to be a Cantor.  Nace had been watching Rachel sing for months and really enjoyed it.  When the Rabbi’s wife turned 70, Nace and a few of his friends decided to hire Rachel to sing “Happy Birthday” to her as a present.  Nace and Rachel went to coffee the day before the birthday party, and came up with an idea that it would be a great little gimmick if Rachel dressed up like Marilyn Monroe for the party.  The next day, they began to search for a white dress (in the dead of December!) and a blonde wig, which took five hours and four Los Angeles shopping malls before they achieved success.  This little search became their first date, which extended on into the birthday party, a cheese course, and four hours at a coffee shop.

Nace proposed on Seven Mile Beach in Grand Cayman on the first night of a vacation.  Rachel had absolutely no idea, and asked Nace while packing to put her laptop into his briefcase with his own, like she always does when they traveled.  He told her that he had no room…so Rachel rolled her eyes, thinking that her boyfriend was taking too much work with him on their vacation, unbeknownst to the fact that what was taking up all the room was a ring box.  On the coral at the end of the beach at sunset, Rachel was staring off into the horizon and Nace casually asked her “Can I ask you a question?” as if he was going to follow up with “What are you in the mood for dinner?”  It didn’t register that he had, in fact, followed up with “Will you marry me?” until she turned around to find him opening a ring box.

It was very important to Nace, as a surfer, that the wedding ceremony overlooked the ocean.  The venue happens to be one of Nace’s favorite venues, and it was right across the (long, windy) hill from Rachel’s childhood summer camp.  She was sold on the venue before they even finished driving up to it.

From Lavine Fox Events … Our couple – originally from Germany (Bride) and Beverly Hills (groom) currently live in Las Vegas and both hold quite prestigious jobs in the hotel industry.  Their event was a destination wedding.  With a bridesmaid’s spa & high tea get together at the home of the groom’s sister on Friday afternoon, to the rehearsal dinner at Il Cielo, and the brunch at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Sunday, it was a weekend of fun filled events, love and good friends and family.

The Wedding was a traditional Jewish ceremony performed by the Bride’s family Rabbi’s who were flown in from Las Vegas.
The ceremony took place in the lush garden of the Beverly Hills Hotel.  Nancy from Mark’s Garden as well as Alyson & Diane from Levine Fox Events, designed a traditional yet elegant setting for the ceremony to take place, using all ivory and white flowers.  The Chuppah also adorned a crystal chandelier which added a touch of glitz which the bride loved.  Classical music from the six piece string based group provided by West Coast Music filled the air as guests entered the garden. Ladies were handed pashminas in case they felt the chill of the February night air.  Guests were also asked to sign a special wine bottle with custom label for the bride and the groom (avid wine drinkers).

Once the ceremony was complete, guests were then escorted by hotel staff to the foyer of the Rodeo Ballroom.  There they were greeted by a color scheme of fuchsia floral and silver draped accents.  Upon entry to the foyer, guests collected their escort cards which laid upon three square tables at different heights with floral and glowing candle accents.  They then had a chance to view photos of the bride and grooms family, past and present from the display on the ancestor tables. Each family member was represented with their photo in an elegant jeweled frame with calligraphied card placed in front showing their relation to the bride and groom.  Guests dined on delicious passed hors d’oeurves, specialty passed drinks, and jazzy tunes from West Coast Music.

When the ballroom doors opened, everyone gasped.  Ooohs and Ahhhs were whispered to each other as everyone was escorted to their tables.  The colors or Red, Burgundy, Fuchsia & Black completely transformed this elegant yet simple room into a completely new environment.  The room was draped in red, with black tie backs on each side.  A proscenium and unique draping accents set the stage apart from the rest of the room.  A long oval head table made a grand statement with elegant chair covers donning over-sized roses, round booths around the perimeter of the room offered unique & comfortable seating and the rectangle tables throughout also gave a “hip” vibe to this unique layout.  A red applique of the bride & groom’s name and elegant lighting lit the beautiful glossy black dance floor.

Each centerpiece was a bit different, some high, some low all with use of “bling” accents.  Custom Personalized Menus were placed at each seat and each table number was embroidered onto dupioni silk fabric tent cards.  The wedding cake was complete with it’s own unique backdrop, specialty linens and floral cake stand.  Guests enjoyed a custom designed menu complete with amuse bouche, passed desserts, greasy,  late night snacks as well as a special birthday, champagne toast made from the groom to the bride at midnight.  The warm toasts, feelings of love, unique accents and incredible music filled this night and to this day our special couple and their parents still receive calls and notes about their night of magic.

Makeup by the lovely Béke Beau.

From Love Me Do Photography .. Mira and Hal had a beautifully styled wedding at an amazing venue, Andalusia.  We worked with an All-Star Philadelphia weddings cast: Beka from Styled Creative, Love n Fresh flowers, Beke Beau makeup, and Peachtree and Ward catering who made the evening perfect and our jobs easy.  Mira and Hal make each other laugh and smile so much, it was really sweet to watch.  We loved running around the huge grounds of Andalusia with the two of them, to all the amazing spots on the estate.

From the lovely bride … I had two favorite parts of the day. The first was getting to the end of the aisle and having Hal just beaming waiting for me, and then pull me into a hug. We were just so happy. My second favorite part of the day was right after we entered into the tent and I just jumped on the dance floor with my friends. I looked up and people were joining us, and the band was killing it, and everyone was just having fun. And in the end, it turned into a great party.

Evan and I met at UC San Diego’s Hillel. I was looking for the perfect Jewish guy and I found him! I was eyeing him as soon as I saw him. The night that started it all was at a Hillel dance at a local bar and some wave of courage came over me and I asked him to dance. Evan takes great pleasure in telling everyone that I picked him up at a bar. Our shared love for good food, baseball and Lord of the Rings were a sure sign that we’d be sticking together for quite some time.

We hadn’t even thought of Bridges Auditorium as a venue until we heard that a friend had done some photography work there. Claremont was my second home growing up. I absolutely loved that east coast feel, the big leafy trees, antique architecture. When we found out that Bridges worked with the catering company that did my friend’s wedding where the food was incredible, it was like it was all meant to be! It was so perfect. When we visited Bridges, we fell in love with the elegance and sophistication.

I knew that I wanted our wedding to be unique which for me, started with the color palette. I had gone through the rainbow multiple times in my head and nothing seemed to pop. Turquoise is one of my favorite colors so I began playing around with that. I also knew that I had to have something kind of bright so I landed on orange. Black for tuxes didn’t seem to jive so Jennifer, who did the flowers, suggested grey. Who knew?! The combo was perfect.

I was also really into the Spanish look, eying invitations with a tile-theme, and referring back to my lacy dress for inspiration on the details that would really jazz up the occasion. As in most cases, the bride was making a lot of the decisions. I did my best to include Evan in whatever we did, but he knew that he wouldn’t have much say at the end of the day. He insisted on three things though: the quilt being made by his mom, that our Grand Entrance song was “The Final Countdown” and that succulents were incorporated into the floral arrangements. All three were perfect choices, though I was hesitant about the song and succulents at first… now I know not to ever doubt his decisions again.

Evan and I knew that we wanted some special touches that represented each of our families to really bring everybody together. Not only did we incorporate the chuppah, an element of Jewish wedding tradition to the ceremony, but Evan’s mom made a quilt as the covering. Its gorgeous tones of gold, brown and beige were so perfect during the ceremony as the sun was setting. We’ll get to keep the quilt forever. From my side of the family, it was inevitable that hints of Brazilian flare would be spicing up the occasion. From the guestbook and keepsake boxes both hand-crafted by my aunt, to the samba cocktail music and the surprise serenade performed by my mother, grandmother and aunts, it was a night to remember. (The serenade melted my heart.)

Everything went by so fast but what I remember most was standing under the chuppah, holding my husband’s hands, looking into each other’s eyes and just smiling. I felt like I was on a cloud (except for the pain I felt on the balls of my feet).  The pictures are so incredible and capture everything so flawlessly which makes reliving the entire day such an enjoyment. It warms our hearts every time we go through them. The whole day was absolutely perfect! I felt so glamorous and happy. Evan and I couldn’t have asked for anything better.
