Tim and I got engaged two years ago in Honolulu, Hawaii. We have been together for eight years, and met each other in junior college. After graduating from UCLA, we both found jobs in Los Angeles and decided to start our life here. For the past few years, we have enjoyed the weather and the beach so much in L.A., and when Tim proposed to me, I knew that we had to get married by the beach, so we could capture the beautiful Southern California weather and scenery.

We searched for many hotels in the SoCal area, and The Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel definitely caught our eye. The sunset terrace was just perfect for a small size ceremony like ours. It is a private, beautiful courtyard overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The Plaza room for the reception was also what we were looking for, simple but elegant, and with a classical touch. The french doors open with a great view of the ocean and connects to the sunset terrace.

Since we had a relatively small group, we wanted to have a “warm and cozy” style wedding, and only invite close family and friends. The color scheme we chose was soft pink and champagne, which was inspired by the design of a wedding invitation set from I Do Concepts.

I designed our wedding stationary by using soft pink ribbon to wrap the light champagne colored cards with contents printed in a dark champagne color, also with a touch of light pink floral in the background. That is the exact simple, elegant, but chic feel that we wanted for our wedding.

We wanted to avoid the typical ballroom wedding feel. Instead of having all high vases as our centerpiece, we chose to have several different types of flowers displayed in different shapes of vases, so that the whole table setting looked unique, clean, and very fresh.

It was definitely the most memorable day for both Tim and I, and we enjoyed every single moment of it. Our favorite part of the day was after the reception. We walked down to the beach with our photographers and took some amazing photos by the beach. It was finally the time for us to relax and just walk down the beach to enjoy the view.

We met three and a half years ago. Alex had just moved from San Francisco, where he was working, to San Marcos to attend grad school. I was studying for my nutrition degree. We met online, but didn’t actually meet in person for several months, despite almost crossing paths several times at school. When we finally did meet up, it turned out we practically lived on the same street! Our first date was at a coffee shop, even though Alex doesn’t like coffee – he played along and got a smoothie. We hit it off right away and didn’t want the night to end, so from there we went to get pancakes, even though I should’ve been studying for a big test the next day. Since then we’ve been inseparable, sharing a passion for food, music, and video games.

On a Friday afternoon while looking at wedding venues he suggested that we head to a nearby look-out point called Mt. Bonnell. I found it rather suspicious but didn’t think too much into it because we had ring shopped together and I knew when my engagement ring would be shipped in. Sitting over the cliff we talked about our future, details for the wedding, growing old together and while I wasn’t paying attention, he bent down on one knee while trying his hardest to not fall over the ledge. I said “yes” and the rest is history!

My Latin heritage and our love for food had a lot to do with the inspiration of our wedding. Spending a lot of time in Mexico you are surrounded by colors, culture, food, and most of all family, and I really wanted that feel to represent our wedding. I would describe to our vendors that our inspiration was a Spanish garden party with a modern chic vibe. I finally decided on eggplant and fuchsia with pops of marigold. I wanted it to be formal but not stuffy.

With Alex’s family from central Texas and mine from Mexico we wanted to go with a venue where there would be as little driving as possible, that also offered an outdoor space for the ceremony and a gorgeous indoor ballroom for the reception. Once we toured the Mansion at Judges’ Hill, I immediately pictured us tying the knot under the pergola in the garden courtyard and celebrating a lavish affair upstairs in the elegant ballroom; it was perfect!

We continued our Spanish/southwest theme with a special menu. During cocktail hour a lively 9-piece mariachi band started the fiesta while guests sipped colorful watermelon and pineapple agua frescas and snacked on miniature quesadillas and empanadas. Celebrating his birthday two days prior I really wanted to go all out on a special groom’s cake for my tech-savy hubby. I surprised him with a six foot iPhone cake constructed of his favorite cake balls with special apps that had meaning to him such Star Wars, Yelp and even the game he designed himself in his favorite flavors.

When Mary Gonsalves Kinney, Stylist/Editor of Sister|Brother Style and Lauri Levenfeld, Owner/Photographer of Zoom Photography got together they were certain about one thing – bringing together two worlds on opposite sides of the cultural and political spectrum. Mary and Lauri wanted this shoot to be as culturally authentic as possible with high-fashion style and an edge that would inspire people to step outside of their box.

Mary and Lauri had discussed many possibilities, but none seemed more inspiring than the potential love story between an African woman born and raised by the Zulu tribe in the Province of Natal in South Africa and her British fiancée born in Cape town, South Africa. The story is rather contentious as there is a long and torrid history between the Zulu tribe and the British.

This incredibly controversial political relationship framed our Inspiration To Reality story. It is a story about a bride and a groom who work together to overcome the long history of political betrayal and bring two families and cultures together at their wedding. Born in the same country, the bride and groom grew up with totally different cultural traditions and expectations. Even so, they find love and break down those racial barriers that still consume so many South African people. Their story is one of fortitude, passion and color. Fortitude because they remain strong and together through their many trials as a multiracial couple. Passion because it is their love for one another that is so vibrant and so real that nothing can tear them apart. Color because though their own skin color is different and may pose problems between their two families, it only brings them closer together. They learn to appreciate all that defines them and make it imperative that each cultural piece of them properly represented in their wedding.

Authentic pieces were provided during the photo shoot by Sacramento’s Zanzibar Tribal Art store and the Big Bang Events. The set included everything from hand-woven baskets that take years to make and represent each bride’s worth to their tribe, to clay pots used traditionally for drinking beer at Zulu wedding celebrations. Pincushion protea, leucadendron, croton leaves, phalaenopsis orchids and red and orange roses were all exported from South Africa just for this shoot and made into lovely arrangements.

Wooden screens were leaned against barbed wire fences with acres of farmland set behind each vignette so as to show the beauty of the untouched land of Natal. Hanging above, traditional Western elements were displayed through crystal chandeliers and the British-inspired china and silver were carefully selected to coordinate with the colorful African flowers.

The styling wardrobe for this shoot was strongly based on Zulu tradition. The Zulu women of South Africa wear many colors, which are proudly represented in their multicolored beaded necklaces and bracelets. Headscarves, mud cloths and traditional wedding hats are also essential pieces to a Zulu wedding. Because the bride and groom come from different worlds, it was important to blend both African and Western colors and traditions through the custom made gowns, the suiting and the jewelry and accessories. Our bride’s African and Western dresses were custom made for this shoot by the talented, Caren Templet and all shoes and costume jewelry were borrowed from retailers in Northern California. Zulu wedding hats made of real human hair and dignitary straw hats lined with chicken feathers dyed a deep red were used in various shots where the bride was wearing a Western gown so as to show a cultural balance.

The bride’s jewelry was rich in texture and included fine jewelry pieces with diamonds and other gems to add a certain depth along side the beadwork and the copper and silver metals. Jewelry designers made original pieces that represented more traditional looking beaded jewelry just for this shoot. The bride wore a beautiful blue topaz ring as her wedding ring in lieu of a traditional diamond, as a Zulu woman would usually not wear a ring and would never choose to wear a diamond. Her headpieces were created using Zulu scarves and wedding hats and braiding was crucial in providing a more authentic look. The bride’s makeup was also an important piece and transitioned from subtle, Western colors to vibrant Zulu tribal paint.

The groom had traditional suiting for many shots with bow ties, which are British-influenced, but his bowties, pocket squares, shoes (and shoestrings) were bold in color to represent his fiancée’s culture in a subtle way.

From the Bride… Steven and I love reveling in incredible food, wine, and spectacular scenery. Throughout our relationship, we have traveled to so many parts of the world, from coast to coast (New York to San Francisco), to abroad (from Bahamas to Maldives ). However, the trip to Napa Valley planted the seed for my inspiration, where just another mini-getaway from the mundane turned into one of the best moments of my life. While having dinner with some beloved friends at the exclusive French Laundry restaurant, Steven proposed. I knew instantly that I would love nothing else than to have my dream outdoor-garden summer wedding in wine country.

Finding a wedding site took months of online research. Miraculously, I came across some photos of a wedding held at the Annadel Estate Winery. All those countless daydreams of dancing in the open ruins, underneath glamorous chandeliers and shining stars could now be a reality. I had found THE wedding venue, where Steven and I, along with our most beloved friends and family, could be transported to our very own personal paradise to celebrate our special day. Annadel was the perfect backdrop for my wedding: romantic, glamorous, and vintage inspired. A blush-color scheme infused with black was chosen to create an ethereal setting by day and a sultry, dreamy setting by night.

The sky was a sea of clear blue. Everything from the chairs to the white antique roses scattered on the grass was kissed by the sun’s golden rays. Even though our family and friends sat around the intimate garden setting, even as my beloved ten-year old dog, Booger, trotted down the aisle as ring-bearer with the bridal party following, I saw only Steven when I walked down the garden path. We exchanged our personally written vows, shed several tears, and had our first kiss as husband and wife in a breathtakingly beautiful setting.

If my best friend/maid-of-honor was my helper mouse, then Brandy from Bliss Events was my fairy-Godmother! The coordination, the planning, and any mishaps were completely taken care of before and on the day of my wedding—from the shuttle buses and rehearsal dinner, to the flowers and the wedding favors. Because of their attention to detail and proactive thinking, I was completely calm and enjoyed every second of my wedding. The guests had plenty to do while the bridal party and immediate family utilized the Estate’s many settings for some photo-ops. The pink and blush colored candy station was a hit for the sweet-lovers, and the open bar serving everything from Napa/Sonoma Valley wine to Patron and Goose was available for those who needed a stronger kick. Everyone feasted on the passed hors d’œuvres and shared laughter and jokes as they searched for their seats. All guests were asked to submit a childhood picture with their RSVP cards, which were later used as their place cards. If they didn’t like what they saw? No problem. A custom photo booth was set up with my personal SLR camera on a tripod for guests to make new memories they would enjoy.

Although we wanted a beautiful and elegant wedding, we still wanted our quirky and fun-loving personalities to shine through as well. To add some eccentric flair to the reception, we incorporated some excitement with the Spazmatics, an equally eccentric 80’s cover band. The guests, young and old, partied like rock-stars, even after the lead guitarist decided to use one of the dinner tables to slide across. The table collapsed from the added weight, no one was hurt, and the fun continued. I’m sure the open bar helped settle the score.

I will never forget my very first dance with my father as we awkwardly twirled to “One Fine Day”, or the clinking of Rose’-filled champagne glasses as our loved ones wished us a lifetime of happiness, the smell of my peony bouquet, or the moment my fiancé became my husband. After changing out of my dress, kicking off those 6-inch heels, the bridal party, my husband, and I shuttled back to our house perched on top of a secluded hill overlooking Sonoma Valley. My dream wedding had come to an end after a culmination of a year and a half of planning. And it was all worth it.

From Unity Weddings…When I first saw the Emerald City inspiration board, I knew that it was absolutely perfect for me. I love all things clean, crisp black and white and art deco, so it really was a no-brainer. What really caught my attention was the photo of Keira Knightley in the infamous emerald gown from the movie “Atonement”. I literally spent days and nights watching it over and over while creating the stationery. Then my florist, Alain Simon, asked to see it, so we watched it again! The mood in that movie is so peculiar, dark and moody yet still very romantic.

The idea behind the shoot was to mix pretty severe graphics with romantic vintage softness. We shot at the newly-built Loft Hotel; its dark floors, oversize Chandeliers, and Art Deco furniture were the perfect setting for a dressy yet fun atmosphere. I am usually a huge fan of mixing and matching, so I decided to incorporate the black and white theme through mismatched plates. Emerald Green became the accent color through napkins, glasses, stationery, and jewelry. Along with my florist, we also decided to bring in some pinks in the flowers to soften up the tables. The Flowers were roses, cymbidium orchids, hypericum berries, and succulents.

In the end, I wanted to create an event with a hard-to-describe mood. Dressy yes not stuffy, modern yet with a vintage twist, colorful yet soothing to the eye. Something that would leave the viewer with a light shiver! By the way, my inspiration song was “Fever”, which is really funny since it’s the song that Ioan Films selected for the video, without even consulting me!

Here are some tips for brides wanting to re-create the look:

I think that this look is actually fairly easy to create on any kind of budget. The starting point was the black and white graphic. If attempting to DIY this, I would suggest sticking to only 1 or 2 bold colors (too many and it’ll become hallucinogenic!). If the colors all match, then you can go ahead and play with patterns as much as you like (I chose dots and lines, but it could be anything). Graphic plates are available everywhere, from expensive rental vendors  to Ikea.

If you’re going to be playing with heavy and bright patterns and colors, stick to simplicity everywhere else. You’ll want the bold visuals to really stick out without the entire design being overwhelming.

With a place setting this bold, nothing else on the table needs to be extravagant, so there’s yet another way of cutting costs! We used very small flower arrangements, just enough to give small colorful pops.

Finally, and most importantly, I say trust your instincts! A lot of people weren’t sold when I told them about my plans for this design, but it seems to have worked out after all!

Kirsten and Jonas were married on July 11th , 2009, at the Central Library in Los Angeles, CA. The ceremony took place in the stunning Maguire Gardens, a Los Angeles landmark built in 1926, followed by their reception across the way at the well-known LA eatery and wine bar, Café Pinot.

Kirsten, a retired professional dancer, found her design inspiration from the classic Firebird Ballet. Deep violets, reds and oranges of the Firebird popped beautifully from the lush summer greenery of the library gardens. Kelly Demaray, of Demaray Events, and florist Kristin Brancaleone of The Treasured Petal did a spectacular job of making Kirsten’s vision come to life in such an elegant and way.

Kirsten’s dear friend, Suss Cousins, owner and founder of the famous Suss Design knitting shop and knit clothing line, hand-knit the groom and groomsmen’s ties and bridesmaid’s shawls to illustrate the Firebird color palette as well.

Kelly Demaray, Kirsten and Jonas’ wedding planner, introduced the couple to Docuvitae’s work right away when they described their wedding photography goals. Jonas received an MA from the PhD program in Visual Studies at UC Irvine with emphasis on the History of Photography and has extremely high standards of photography. When I first met with Jonas, we had a great time ‘geeking out’ together about the history of photography and various artists. I was beyond excited when they booked me to shoot their wedding and knew I could really be an artist while documenting their day. Above all, Kirsten and Jonas wanted authenticity and art in their photography, which is the backbone of Docuvitae’s approach. I was so inspired going into the wedding day that I even borrowed some of Laura Kleinhenz’s (Docuvitae’s owner and founder) classic vintage film cameras to work with in addition to my own. I think I had about seven different cameras around my neck at one point. Kirsten even made me stop photographing her getting ready in order to take her own snapshot of me with the cameras! Kirsten and Jonas were a treat to work with and are a fantastic couple.
