On a beautiful August morning in the Old Church of Portland, Oregon, Lindsay Reichardt married her high school sweetheart, James Buckles. With a long-stemmed, gardenia studded, bouquet of pink roses in one hand, Lindsay’s other hand clung tightly to her new hubby for balance all day, as her Vera Wang ball gown of swirled tulle could barely squeeze down the isle.

A vintage Bentley drove Mr. & Mrs. Buckles away to a private photo shoot while guests made their way to the Heritage ballroom in the Governor Hotel for the reception. Guests were greeted by the passing of savory hors d’ouveres: Jake’s famous crab cakes, cucumber tea sandwiches, salmon lox bruschetta, quiche, brie en croute bites, and caviar deviled eggs as well as a Parisian-inspired Patisserie spread, which displayed sweet treats: a croquembouche of cream puffs, topiary trees of fresh strawberries, triple berry and lemon tarts, panna cotta parfaits, meringues, biscotti, madeline cakes, palmiers, macaroons, brioche, mini-muffins, cheesecake bites, éclairs and napoleons!

Perfectly pruned boxwoods, floating gardenias and lush arrangements of hydrangea, sugared apricots, raspberry vines and cascading jasmine transformed the reception into a French garden. Placecards and menus were lined to mimic the border of Laudree macaroon boxes, sugar cubes rested inside rose petals on china teacups and vintage botanical print reproductions by Pierre-Joseph Redoute (the official court painter of Marie Antoinette during the French Revolution) differentiated each tulle-layered table. The head table was overflowing with salal garlands, rustic candles, mercury glass votives, fresh fruit, cinched tulle and mossy, terrarium-encased arrangements.

When guests made their way to the bar, they had a number of specialty drink choices. There were five champagne cocktails options, all with fun names, for example, the “Blissful Bellini” featured peach puree, vanilla vodka, champagne and fresh mint, while the “Honeymooner” featured ginger syrup, lime juice, champagne and cucumber. Those still waking up also had 5 drink options at an Espresso station, for example, the “Crème Brulee Cappuccino” with cinnamon-infused espresso and raw cinnamon and sugar dusting, or an “Opposites Attract” caramel macchiato given sweet caramel drizzle and a dash of sea salt.

Crepes au citron, dulche de leche French toast and strawberry shortcake waffles were plated during brunch and Jake’s servers then circulated the ballroom offering hot sausage and bacon as well. Finally, as if guests weren’t already stuffed to the brim, Lindsay and James cut their cake: a five-tiered fresh strawberry and cream cheese masterpiece with diamond quilting, silver dragee detail, pink macaroons and a “B” cameo. After such an indulgent day, “favors” were simply notes letting the guests know that a donation had been made to the Portland Rescue Mission in their honor.

From the bride… Chris and I met as sophomores at Cal Poly, dated through college and ended up in San Francisco. After about six years of dating, Chris proposed at Donner Lake, one of our favorite places in the world. I wanted a wedding near home so we visited and considered nearly every wedding venue in Marin and Sonoma Counties. Nothing had everything that was important to us until we found St. Vincent’s School for Boys, which had been under our noses the entire time. A five-minute drive from our family home, we visited every chance we got, which led us to Amber at Preferred Sonoma Caterers who helped us execute our vision for our wedding.  

Shortly after Chris and I were engaged, while looking through a collection of my late grandmother’s watercolor paintings, my parents and I found one of a church and steeple tucked away in a woodsy forest — mysteriously,  it looked exactly like St. Vincent’s. The watercolor ended up being the inspiration for our entire wedding. Our save the dates and invitations by Swiss Cottage Designs and Love, Jenna were watercolor calligraphy, and we let the sprawling eucalyptus trees and pale champagne walls dictate my choices for the visual of the wedding. I wanted a very neutral palette to allow for St. Vincent’s old and stunning architecture to shine the right way without distractions. I chose Priscilla of Boston champagne bridesmaid gowns for my sisters and cousins, sand colored linens for the tables, wild and textured white and blush flowers with a lot of greenery, (executed beautifully by Vanda Floral), thin overhead string lights for the reception, cream place cards with sprigs of rosemary, and white pashminas tied to the mahogany chiavari chairs as gifts for our guests.

I wanted the evening to be memorable and super fun, and my mom and I knew that the schedule and little surprises were the way to make it happen. After a cocktail hour under the sun in the front courtyard featuring passed appetizers, cocktails with grey striped straws, Rat Pack music, and two huge cheese stations, guests were invited through the wrought iron gates to the back courtyard where a huge fountain, an heirloom tomato bar (my request from day 1), a raw bar, and a cigar and scotch lounge were waiting. I knew my crazy friends and family would be itching to dance so we went right into the newlywed dance followed by 20 minutes of fun dancing. After dinner and the adorable and hilarious speeches, everyone danced to an ’80s cover band from Chris’ hometown, followed by a traditional Italian dessert bar with a grooms cake made by my best friend and a gelato cart scooping out of the back of a red bicycle. I came up with the idea for the cigar and scotch lounge for my dad and his friends to keep busy but every time I looked over, my girlfriends were sharing a cigar with my uncles — our wedding was so fun for us because our guests were happy.

From the bride… When Philip and I got engaged, I had no clue what I wanted our wedding to be like. After doing my due diligence via blogs and magazines, I decided on the theme of “romantic, sweet and classic.” Our most important task was finding the right vendors and after that, it all came together nicely. We chose the soft colors of champagne and blush to set the romantic mood. We then picked out the sweetest flowers we could think of, including hydrangeas, peonies, ranunculus and roses. We also decorated the reception using numerous candles to complement our flowers. We had a great planner at Arlington Hall who assisted us with the details of table linens, rentals, and picking out delicious food. We also landed gorgeous letterpress invitations from SmallPrinter on Etsy. At the beginning of the planning process, I didn’t care much about my invitations, but after designing them with SmallPrinter, they turned out to be one of my favorite details of the wedding! Finding my wedding dress and bridesmaids dresses may have been the most difficult part of planning. I wanted a dress that was unique but still classic and romantic. After looking at every store in Dallas, I finally landed on the Jim Hjelm dress. I knew it was just perfect. Based on my dress, I found beautiful champagne bridesmaids dresses that fit our wedding look perfectly.

Finally, we wanted to send our guests off with sweet treats. Philip and I got engaged in Paris, so we wanted to give a nod to Paris without overdoing it. We ordered wholesale muslin bags online and bought some Paris-themed stamps to decorate with. We filled them with pink and white pretzels to make a pretty favor. We also made the ribbon sticks with blush, champagne and white ribbon for guests to wave as we made our exit. Philip and I literally planned the whole wedding together, beginning to end. All of our hard work made the night so much sweeter to us, and we still get giddy thinking about how perfect the day was with our family, friends, and each other.

Up first in our pretty parade is a darling Alabama affair by Stephen Jerkins that I simply couldn’t adore more if I tried.  Boasting one very charming DIY detail after another, this wedding is overflowing with so much love, it’s contagious.  What’s more adorable than the groom proposing in the same exact spot that the bride’s own parents and grandparents were engaged?  Or the bride wearing her grandmother’s headpiece?  Or the entire wedding taking place on the bride’s great-grandparent’s farm?  Yep, absolutely nothing is more adorable… and you can see every last heartwarming moment in the full gallery of images!

From the Bride… Every wedding is a family affair, but as our wedding day approached, my husband-to-be and I increasingly realized that a marriage, not just a wedding, is something shared by an entire community of the people who have made us what we vowed to love. So we decided that not only did we want our wedding to be personal and reflect our passions and our personal choices; we also wanted to incorporate the history of our friends and families into that day.

We had already gotten started on the right foot. Nick proposed to me on a November day sitting on the antique green velvet couch where my grandfather had proposed to my grandmother and my dad proposed to my mother. At that point, though, we hadn’t realized the stage was set…That realization came to me one day during my engagement when my grandmother pulled out her wedding ensemble from 1958 for me to try on. She’d kept it all–the knee-length eyelet fabric dress, the white pumps, the birdcage veil, and the feathered headpiece. That headpiece. As soon as I put it on I knew I wanted to wear it, both because of its stunning retro look and because I knew that I wanted a piece of her with me when I walked down the aisle.

From that day on all the pieces fell into place. We decided to get married on my great-grandparents’ 160-acre farm in the countryside of north Alabama, where I’m from. Instead of having traditional wedding cake, I asked my dad to make his famous Italian Cream Cake, and in lieu of a groom’s cake Nick’s mother made his grandma’s classic chocolate delight.

Nick and I were both English majors in college and now Nick works as a freelance photographer/videographer, so we incorporated our love of books and of cameras into our Save-the-Dates (book cover postcards from Penguin) and our reception centerpieces. Nick also designed our invitation suite. We’ve also enjoyed traveling together to Italy, Israel, Egypt, and Mozambique, so our guest book was, naturally, a huge collection of vintage postcards from those places and from New York City, a place we love and where we decided to honeymoon.

In the midst of all the vintage family pieces, I will admit it was fun to sneak in something I got from nowhere but–you guessed it–Ebay for $19.99! I was thrilled when I found my vintage reception dress for such a great price. Sometimes your something old can also be something new.

We were also happy to ask my grandfather, who married my mom and dad, to perform our wedding. And so many other family and friends contributed to the day, making cupcakes, cutting the grass, arranging bouquets, and a million other details that took hours of time. It was humbling for both of us. On top of the love our family and friends showed us, we could not have asked for more talented or considerate vendors. Stephen did an excellent job with the photography, his wife Amanda created the most stunning florals, and Dish Cafe was the cherry (or specialty spinach dip, I should say) on top of a wonderful day.

Many couples have told me they don’t recall a single moment from their wedding, that it was just a blur and they were simply ready to get away. Nick and I were so grateful that, on the contrary, on our wedding day we had a blast, surrounded by our best friends, dancing and singing and celebrating the gifts we’ve been given.

From the Bride… Because we did most of our planning from abroad, I relied heavily on my wedding planner Renny from Bliss Weddings and Events.  We made important decisions from the reception venue to the band to the photographer strictly from looking at their websites.  Our full trust was given to Renny and boy did she nail it.  We absolutely loved all of our vendors.

The style of our wedding was a romantic, grand, old elegance feel with a touch of our world travels.  I enjoy soft colors and romantic flowers like peonies, along with soft draping and uplighting to attain that elegant feel.  Cornflower blue with hints of soft pink coupled with shades of ivory and champagne was the color scheme.

Because we met and fell in love in Chicago, we both knew we wanted an urban wedding.  An outdoor element was also desired.  That proved to be difficult to find in such a large city.  Ultimately we decided to have our ceremony within Millennium Park’s Wrigley Square.  I was a bit apprehensive about this ceremony venue knowing it would draw large crowds and be very noisy.  It ended up being one of my favorite parts.  From the moment we saw pictures of the Chicago Cultural Center, we knew it would be our reception venue.  After waiting patiently, a weekend in June opened up!  It was the perfect location and fit my elegant wedding vision perfectly.  The Tiffany Dome, which is the largest in the world, really made an impression.

Kehoe Events couldn’t have applied my vision for our reception any better.  The Chicago Cultural Center dripped with romance.  Candles everywhere, mirrors on tables that made a beautiful reflection and an abundance of flowers that finished off the look.  It took my breath away.  The cake was not only beautiful but also tasty.  Our guests raved about the food from Blue Plate Catering.  Hors d’oeuvres were samples of some of our favorite foods from India, SE Asia and Argentina among others.  Indigo rocked having had our guests on the dance floor until the clock struck midnight.  Our photographer, Amanda Sudimack and company from Artisan Events and our videographer, I do Films were both a joy to work with and they captured all the special moments from our Big Day.

A very unique and touching moment was a tribute to my mother.  Wanting to get her a special gift as an outward sign of what she means to me, a song writer was hired to write an original song for my mom.  Jeff Meegan wrote the most amazing song for her and even performed it at our wedding.  My mom was speechless and there was hardly a dry eye in the room.

It was truly our dream wedding.

I practically decided our wedding would be at the New Haven Lawn Club before I even stepped foot inside. I fell in love with the space – the art deco chandeliers, the black and white checked floors and the tiled mirror above the mantle in the ballroom – as soon as I saw pictures of it. Seeing it in person sealed the deal.

The location set the tone for the rest of my style choices: Elegant and romantic with vintage touches. I settled on a color pallet of blush, apricot and champagne. I wanted the room to be decorated in soft, monochromatic tones and accented with gold and ivory. We used a lot of lush blooms like garden roses, peonies, ranunculus and sweet peas. Dusty Miller added texture and gave all the arrangements and bouquets that vintage look I wanted. We decided to display the centerpieces on vintage cut glass cake stands that my mom spent over a year collecting. She found them in all sizes and patterns, which gave each table  a unique and whimsical display. She also collected footed compote bowls that were filled with small arrangements and placed on the bistro tables at cocktail hour.

We created a cake buffet with the extra cake stands. Mini cupcakes and eight 10’’ cakes in flavors like Mexican Hot Chocolate, Orange Creamsicle and Heath Bar Crunch were decorated in blush, apricot and ivory butter cream frosting, trimmed with gold ribbon and topped with large pink and apricot blooms. The cake we cut was a two-tiered lemon raspberry confection decorated with lattice work that matched a pattern from our stationary.

We jazzed up our paper goods by incorporating three different patterns: a gold floral trim, pink lattice work and a pink and gold damask print. Each table number featured a different print and the invitation suite featured all three.

My dress was an Anne Barge ball gown. I loved the way the waist cinched in and the top layer of the skirt floated out, always catching the light just right. I like to think that after spending my childhood dressed in tutus at endless dance recitals this dress picked me. It was the first one I tried on! I borrowed the veil from my new sister-in-law. My hairpiece was a pearl satin ribbon headband with pearl and rhinestone details I bought on Etsy. My something old was a lace handkerchief that both my mother and grandmother carried down the aisle of their wedding day.

A few other personal touches we added to the wedding were the “Mr.” and “Mrs.” letters tied to the back of our chairs with pink and champagne ribbon, a Mad Libs inspired guest book and a display of family wedding pictures. At the end of the night guests were invited to help themselves to freshly popped popcorn, our favorite snack.

The church also matched our color theme, but that was unintentional. We chose it, because the groom’s parents were married there. What more, the priest performing our ceremony married my parents. These personal tributes to our parents were one on the most important parts of the marriage for us.

From Kristen Weaver Photography… Candice has always been specific about her own personal style; she graduated from FIT in New York and quickly moved out to LA to be a fashion designer; and she knew what she wanted for her wedding. Vintage, roaring 20′s style with sparkly metallic touches, an amazing reception venue and a heart-felt ceremony. Pretty much describes Candice. From her hair, to her flowers and reception gown – she used vintage brooches collected from various antique shows (the Rose Bowl flea market in her city, Pasadena, is her all-time favorite). The entire theme of the wedding was derived from a vintage brooch that belonged to her late grandmother – which she used as the main piece of her reception cocktail dress. Other pieces of her grandmother’s jewelry were used as her reception jewelry and in her ceremony headpiece.

Actually, calling it a ‘reception cocktail dress’ may be a bit misleading. Candice designed her gown from a piece of silk fabric that Kevin bought her as a Christmas gift, and layered it with metallic beaded fabric. The flapper-style dress was her entire creation, from the low drop back to the beads across her shoulders (one of her late-grandmother’s necklaces), and of course, her grandmother’s brooch on the front. She finished her style with a beaded Anthropologie headband and ivory Nina shoes with feather accents on the heels.

Candice’s ceremony gown was an amazing vintage-styled masterpiece by couture bridal genius, Claire Pettibone. Candice knew she wanted that exact dress from the first moment she saw it at Kleinfeld’s in New York (I asked, but no, she didn’t make it on “Say Yes to the Dress”).

Little moments were captured in her details – like Kevin’s proposal in front of the historic Flat Iron Building in NYC. The inside of his wedding band is engraved with the address of the building, and they set out Flat Iron postcards for guests to write little notes for them to read later. A mirror was inscribed with his proposal message, “Candice, you have had a lot of great memories in New York. I want this to be the greatest memory you ever have… Will you marry me?”, and below the mirror a vintage dresser carried the guest favors – vintage bottles of perfume and Flat Iron cuff links, with a custom silk screened jewelry box.

Candice’s own engagement ring was created by an estate jeweler in New York City; and her engagement session, that I shot back in August, featured some of their favorite places in Los Angeles, Pasadena, Redondo Beach and Santa Monica!

From Tory Williams… A bridal fashion shoot on the fly! Jessa Blades and I dreamt up this shoot with the inspiration of her beautiful Ft. Greene apartment.  Not knowing what we were getting into— we had the location, makeup, photography, and a lot of ideas.  Luckily we know a handful of wonderful and generous vendors that contributed to making this an amazing production.

We found models from all angles; a flight attendant from recent trip, a couple actors, as well as some really beautiful friends.  Samuelle and Sir Brooklyn’s dresses were the icing on the cake.  Both completely unique designers paving new trends in the industry.  Bowties are all the rave with Jcravata’s handmade wears, and the most stunning jewelry by Caleo Jewelry to decorate the brides.  It wouldn’t be a fashion shoot without hair!  The Parlour Brooklyn impressed us all with their team of busy stylists attending to each hair.  And finally, Poppies and Posies added their mark with their brightly colored arrangements complimenting Jessa’s vibrant lipstick selections.
