From the bride… A few weeks after our engagement we attended a fundraising event for Abilis in Greenwich, CT.  Every attendee was given their lunch in a mini picnic basket which I found to be adorable.  Everyone was told they could take the baskets home with them, but when the hoards of people left, many left their baskets behind.  I hurriedly found the event planners and asked if we could take the remaining baskets to reuse as our centerpieces at our wedding… twenty some odd baskets later our wedding plans were officially underway!  As a typical bride might do I scanned the pages of wedding magazines and of COURSE Style Me Pretty for inspirations. We always knew we would have our wedding in Madison, CT, one of our favorite places.  My family on both my mothers and fathers side, have been either living in or visiting Madison since 1922.  My grandmother, great aunt, aunt, and one sister were all married in The First Congregational Church of Madison, so it only seemed natural. Down the street is The Madison Beach Club where we originally intended to hold our reception, but Tropical Storm Irene had other plans for us and we ended up with a tent wedding at The Guilford Yacht Club. 

Personalized details included:

1. A guest book made out of quilt squares that my aunt is now sewing for us.
2. Pennant flags cut out of extra yellow fabric from my parent’s attic and glued onto twine found in the basement.
3. Picnic baskets with table numbers cut out of the same pattern my mom’s bridesmaids wore and glued on by my best friends.
4. Our sweet ride from the church to the reception in a 1973 Chevy pickup named “Big Blue” borrowed from our neighbors in Madison.
5. A photo booth with an African sunset back drop painted by my best friend, African stuffed animals borrowed from a local thrift shop, and instant camera given to us by Kevin’s parents.  We went to Tanzania for our honeymoon and were too excited to wait for photo opportunities!
6. Windows found in a dumpster behind our apartment which served as our seating chart and menu’s for the night, using chalk markers to write and draw with!
7. Table runners cut by hand by my mom and myself straight from a bolt of fabric until we had blisters on our hands!
8. Our entrees were fish and chips or steak and onion rings, both with a corn/tomato salad recipe of my mom’s, while dessert was blueberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream, a recipe from my family that we make every summer in Madison.
9. My dad and I danced our first dance to Sweet Caroline while wearing red sox attire as both Kevin and my family are big Red Sox fans.
10.  My bridesmaids (my 3 sisters and best friend) sang Amazing Grace while Kevin and I lit the unity candle during our ceremony.
11. Pillows for EVERY guest made from scratch (meaning a bolt of fabric, paint, stamps, needle and thread, and stuffing) with the help of Kevin, my family and a very dear and unbelievably selfless friend while watching Christmas movies in our apartment. For the past seven years I have worked with an orphanage in Ayacucho, Peru called La Casa Hogar Los Gorriones. I have been inspired by their work and humbled by their thankfulness. We made the pillows as a “give away” item at our wedding to let our guests know that we have donated to the orphanage in honor of their presence at our wedding.  The  moto of Los Gorriones is “Sin Amor Soy Nada”, without love I am nothing, which is what we stamped on each pillow.  I hope soon to visit the orphanage for the third time myself, but for the first time with Kevin.

From Vintage Cinema by Jim Altieri…Yvonne and Kevin really love travel and their wedding was no exception.  Their destination wedding in Manchester, VT celebrated everything New England.  The old chapel, a horse drawn carriage and a fantastic lake side reception were just some of the amazing details from this day.  We dodged a few rain drops here and there in true New England fashion but I think it made for a gorgeous backdrop for a fantastic couple!

Michael and I met while working at ClubMed, an all inclusive resort, in Florida.  I had been working there for almost a year when Michael arrived from California.  We met and right away I knew he was the man of my dreams, I just had to prove it to him. After three solid months of long nights chatting, we had our first kiss.

Dating in a resort setting is a bit different from the outside world as you are together all-the-time.  Living in co-ed dorms and eating three meals a day together, is like living with someone right away.  Michael was working at the Trapeze at the resort and I was running the Child Care program, then moved to being in charge of sports like sailing, fitness, rollerblading, archery, and all the silly games around the pool.

After a year I got sent to Turkey as a sailing instructor, and only lasted about a month without my best friend.  At that moment I knew I was done for and headed home, leaving my job with the resort.  Michael was going to work Circus at a summer camp in Maine and I went along.

We road tripped around the country four times after that, camping one night and going out in Las Vegas the next.  It was awesome but we finally needed to settle.  After about  year of moving, we settled in Connecticut where on November 5th, I arrived home to a blazing fire in the fire pit and a margarita.  Michael proposed at the camp fire with the ring in a tissue and our dog running around crazy.  It was perfect and very us!  I am so excited to spend the rest of my life with my best friend and can’t wait for more adventures together!

From Jubilee Events… This was a great photo shoot that derived from a more personal stance than most shoots. This was such a fun, personal photoshoot that was rich with color and details– allowing us to express our fun side. Cinco de Mayo is a holiday full of life and energy—an element we wanted to portray. We coupled it with another tradition, Day of the Dead, and honed in on the spirit of this culture.

Our models, Alicia and Carlos were a great addition to our team for the day—hats off to those shoes that Alicia brought and, of course, the dress, expertly chosen by The White Dress by the shore!  Tony constructed a bouquet and arrangement that, as always, was a beautiful hit and bursting with color! Your eyes can get lost for hours looking at all of the trinkets and pieces we included—each one with a different meaning and purpose behind it.

Our good friend and photographer, Carla Ten Eyck brought in several artifacts from her family’s history, like sugar skulls, masks, colorful lanterns and flags as a nod to the Dia de los Muertos altar, or Day of the Dead, meant to celebrate and remember lost loved ones. Both Carla and Tony Palmieri from Datura – A Modern Garden, brought special notes to include their mothers, quite easily making this shoot even more meaningful to our hearts.

From Candice of Jubilee Events…This was a fun photo shoot to design and play around with– we started off with a quirky, colorful inspiration board and brought in a lot of patterns and rich colors. The tablescape was one of my all time favorites– a long, wooden family style harvest table with bright teal chiavari chairs and an amazing floral chandelier by Datura: A Modern Garden. We used vintage napkins to dress up the colorful runner, silver polka dotted plates, vintage silverware found at a flea market, and mix-matched plates. Tony created gorgeous arrangements in vintage green glass containers spilling with vibrant flowers and branches. Mirrors hang from the back of each hair in varying heights and locations– tied with rough twine.

As a Connecticut Yankee living in San Francisco, planning a wedding from across the country certainly posed its challenges – but it also made the process that much more interesting.  Having grown up by the shoreline in Connecticut and living in the northeast for most of my life, I wanted to incorporate a “New England Shoreline Wedding” theme in to our wedding day by incorporating a DIY, beachy chic feel in to all of the pieces I put together.  Our ceremony took place on my hometown green in the quintessential shoreline town of Guilford, CT, and it was so amazing to have all of our friends and family with us in a place so dear to my heart.  The aisle in the church was lined with blue mason jars, some of which were passed down from my grandmother and others which I searched high and low to find.  The blue mason jars were really the focus of my inspiration, as I grew up canning pickles and jams with my grandmother and family.  So for me, the jars didn’t just look pretty, but they also held a sentimental memory for me.  Following the church ceremony, the bridal party and immediate family walked across the green to my family’s hardware store which has been in business since 1939. We took advantage of the vintage setting with creaky hardwood floors and packed shelves with gadgets and grills lining the sidewalk outside to take some fun (and unique!) photos.  One of the funniest memories I have is my father, all dressed up in his tux, helping a customer who needed to find a battery while the rest of us posed for photos!

One of the details (of many!) I was most excited about in the planning process was the choosing the flowers.  I spent a lot of time creating inspiration boards until I found the perfect mix of rustic and elegant blooms to help give our day some added sparkle.  From eucalyptus and ranunculus (which my florist searched high and low to find in our season) to football mums and dahlias, to the yellow rose in my father’s boutonniere to honor of his two brothers who passed away from cancer; the flowers were a huge part in our day and I couldn’t have been happier with the final product.  I also wore a gardenia in my hair to honor my grandmother who recently passed away and keep her with me on my special day. Our reception took place at Pine Orchard Yacht Club on the water overlooking the Thimble Islands in Branford, CT.  Mother nature was good to us and it was an unseasonably warm late September day, so we were able to follow through with our plan for an outdoor cocktail hour with a guitar duo playing music such as Ray Lamontagne and Dave Matthews in the background while friends and family enjoyed appetizers, beer, and wine, along with our signature cocktail.  I hand-made all of the paper goods for the wedding from the menus with custom embossed silverware to the photobooth reminders to the signature cocktail cards and table numbers.

As we live in San Francisco we also wanted to incorporate our love for wine country, so we used a Nickel & Nickel wine box for all gift cards and used a burlap runner underneath our DIY beach stone placecards, which my mother, a music teacher, labored over to find and write names on during her summer off from school.  I also made our table number holders using wine corks, baker’s twine and hand-made cards featuring a favorite place under each number.  Our guest book was a vintage notebook that I found at Anthropologie, keeping in the beachy theme with cut out shells and starfish on the front.  We had photos of both sets of parents and grandparents on their wedding day spread across the table in vintage, mismatched frames. We decorated the ballroom with different sized tissue paper puff balls in 3 different shades of pink, strung with light blue and white baker’s twine. The fireplace had twinkling candles in all different sizes with eucalyptus draped along the mantle and more blue mason jars scattered about with candles inside.The overall ambiance was romantic, but captured the fun as well!

All in all, we laughed, we cried (tears of joy), we ate!, we danced, we laughed and then we danced some more.  We took hilarious photos in the photobooth (with custom-made props including pink glitter moustaches and bright yellow disco sunglasses) and caught up with friends and family whom we hadn’t seen in years. We started with “Born to Run” – Bruce Springsteen and closed out with “Don’t Stop Believin” – Journey with “New York, New York” playing as guests filed out towards the shuttle buses at the end of he night.  It was the perfect day and all of my teeny tiny little details came together just as I’d hoped.  Everyone had an amazing time in our fairytale day, and to us, that was the most important part.

Having met in photography class at the University of Connecticut, Paul & I always joked that we had met “in the darkroom.” Soon after we graduated, we opened our photography studio, and have been in business for almost as long as we’ve been together. So we decided photography had to be incorporated into several aspects of our day.

Our Save-the-Dates were unique Polaroids created for each guest of us holding a chalk board sign reading ” Save the Date 10.10.10.” I designed our invitations 2.5×22,” printed them on Kraft paper and then we rolled them up and placed them into vintage metal film canisters. As you walked down into the yard where the wedding was, there were 4×6 black & white photographs of us from over the years hanging from a clothesline. At our welcome table we had a book of images from our engagement shoots for our guests to write us messages in. We also re-used the vintage film canisters for people to leave us a well-wish that we could read on our first anniversary. This table was also decorated with some of our vintage cameras and photo chemistry bottles filled with flowers. Hanging from the trees, as you walked down thru the yard, were old windows with images from our engagement shoots, created by my good friend (and artist) Christine Pearson. We also had an awesome photo LUXE booth, made by our dear friends the Graziers. In the photobooth, guests had fun with props including old hats, fur coats, and handmade mustaches on sticks, made by Whiskerworks on Etsy.

Some other little details that made our day unique were our Irish Soda Bread favors made by Paul’s dad Bob, and handmade felted soaps made by my sister Kalee. There were also lots of wooden signs that were designed and handmade by Kalee and me. We printed them on Kraft paper and polyurethaned (water-based) the prints to old, weathered wood found in the McNerney’s barn. We created a giant post with signs pointing the way to different areas of the yard. Even the bathrooms had a sign.

I designed and printed our unique programs, which was quite a project, but worth it. The program booklet had many pages, including our love story, the story of how Paul proposed, thank you’s, our ceremony outline, the bridal party & family members, and a fun page to find out what “tree” you had fallen from- an idea from Martha Stewart. The programs would not have been possible without the help of many friends in assembling them. Staying with our tree symbolism, our friend and artist Shannon McCarthy created a Tree-of-Life Painting for us, on which guests left their inked thumbprints as leaves on the tree. Also we are bicycle enthusiasts, and our friends Matt & Enna Grazier surprised us with a Vintage Western Flyer Tandem Bicycle that they bought from a neighbor and reconditioned. This was a fun prop to use for our photographs!

Our cocktail “hour” was actually a few hours of relaxing, socializing and eating delicious food from our grazing station, which was set up on a giant antique mill table that is normally in the lobby of our studio. I had personally collected all the silver platters, amber, green, and clear dishes that the caterers used for presentation of hor’dourves, and vases that Tony & Cat created beautiful centerpieces that further enhanced the beauty of the table! My brother Donald was so awesome to provide the music sound system and setup, fun lighting effects and late night Karaoke, along with playing our iPod playlist to fill in between the live acts.

We also had to have our favorite botanical artists Tony & Cat of Datura. One of the greatest thing about this duo, is they are so incredibly talented that all we had to do was explain our vision—organic, artistic, rustic, vintage- and they took it from there.

Our delicious 5-course harvest feast was made by the folks at Emily’s Catering and was served family-style on three long banquet tables that we built ourselves from saw-milled boards, under a canopy of lights and trees. Everyone was seated on mix-matched vintage chairs, which looked so amazing!!! We had our guests decide where they wanted to sit by placing their guest skeleton key tag at a seat of their choice. The tags came out so great….they were handcrafted by Paul and I, with help from my mom and sister. Paul hand- scribed each guest’s name with pen & ink on hand-ripped watercolor paper. Vintage skeletons that we found on Ebay were then tied on with jute string to create a tag. I tea-stained & crinkled the tags to “age” them. We hung the Guest Key tags on two doors that were constructed as an “entrance” to our wedding.

We wanted the table scape to look very eclectic, yet warm and welcoming. The place settings were mix-matched vintage china that we collected from Goodwill Stores. The silverware was as also vintage, and found on Ebay. The water glasses & pitchers were also mix-matched amber, green and clear cut glass collected from a variety of places. We wanted our candles to be drippy and gothic, so we asked if we could have some used pillar candles from a wedding venue. The candles were in arrangements on top of tree slices. Our flowers were organically arranged in vintage mason jars belonging to Paul’s parents. (They preserved jams and sauces when Paul was young.) On the tables also were vintage glass milk bottles collected by Paul when he was an Animal Science major at the University of Connecticut, and these were filled with grasses and herbs for another decorative element.

We wanted to leavethe rustic look of the wood tables uncovered by table linens, so we instead bought rolls of burlap and made runners. We wanted nicer cloth napkins than you can rent, so we splurged on lovely hem-stitched burnt orange, olive green, and chocolate brown linen napkins. The napkin rings were also handmade by myself and Paul’s mom. Vintage buttons were collected on Ebay and from my nana were hand-sewn onto jute ribbon, and then sewn to form rings.

Our dessert spread was created by La Petite France Bakery and was so delicious! The bakers created a French wedding cake called a “Croquembouche,” made of small cream puffs formed on the shape of a pyramid and then covered with spun caramelized sugar. Also in the spread were Mini Homemade Pies with handmade flags that my nana & I made together stuck in them, and assorted French pastries. The flowers were in some of the teapots I’ve collected.

We partied into the night by the glow of a giant bonfire built by our friend and neighbor Dave Mordasky. We can’t thank Dave enough for all the heavy duty yard work he did out of the kindness of his heart….without him and his generosity, many parts of our wedding would not have been possible. For our after party, we also enjoyed Bob’s famous home-made chili which he cooked over an open-fire!

Our day couldn’t have been more perfect……it fact it was utter bliss. We can’t thank our friends, family and vendors enough for making our day one of the most magical and memorable days of our lives
